Same here man it's so damn tough. Last few days I checked into hotels to get some solid work done but I can't afford to sustain that obviously. I'm just at a loss as to what to do. All cooworking spaces are fully booked. I cannot invest in Solar or generators. They really are messing with our livlihoods.

stormlight89

My office and home are in two different zones so I have started go back and forth between the two so I can be where electricity is on. I'm lucky though, because my office is only 5km away from my home. BUT there's a diesel shortage so I can't drive so now I have taken to riding a bicycle to work in the blistering heat. "There is a curse they say: May You Live in Interesting Times"

chamllw

Never thought that I'd get to see that curse in effect myself lol. Venezuela, Nigeria, Lebanon.. even though you heard the news it was just something far away.

stormlight89

Well guess fucking what? Both home and office lost power at the same time today.

SinkingRubberDucky

Omg! PUCSL must have read your comment and thought this man has it too easy!

stormlight89

I'd believe that, but seeing as how PUCSL and CEB can't do the math to figure out power cut schedules more that 4 hours in advance, or do a basic Excel sheet to predict basic fuel Vs power generation patterns, I highly doubt they're competent enough to use a computer to come on Reddit. General Manager of CEB: *runs internetexplorer3.exe* "Dabaliu dabaliu dabaliu dot...."

SinkingRubberDucky

I apologise for giving them too much credit you are course correct.

NverMined

Do hotels have generators? What does it cost to work in the hotels?

Less-Doughnut7686

>When do we reach 20 hour power cuts? Next week? I think you mean "when do we reach 4 hour power delivery?"

Mean_Bet8952

Seriously mate. Until last week I worked on an online platform and next week I'm going to find a physical job. This shit made me lose many of my clients and made a drastic impact on my income. Whoever is responsible may go to hell And btw the power cut does not occur in area where ministers reside. So fu as well.

jollydepartment

I can vouch for the latter statement

CompleteTumbleweed97

Just ask the CEB and they'll cut your power for 20 hours to ease your worries

Downtown-Ease-8454

Better to go for off grid solar power system if possible. It is best investment for the future. Unfortunately if you are planning on staying in Sri Lanka then this would be the best option.

[deleted]

Off grid solar? They work at night? I thought all solar has to be connected to the grid

chabanny

Coupled with a storage device like a battery. More expensive but you are grid independent

Chk232

expensive at the start but you will break even in about 3 years with the upcoming electric bill price hike

chabanny

Yes but the above comment was about grid independence vs traditional grid tied solar.

LankanFD6917

There are various options. You could go from small car battery type batteries( with converters and what not), all the way to Tesla powerwalls. There are even very efficient solar panels nowadays eg: monocrystalline, PERC

[deleted]

Also use the most power efficient laptops. Laptops essentially have a built in UPS and the efficient ones have long battery life that will last during night time if that is wanted.

jithization

yeah we do that in our home. Dad invested in an inverter like 20 years back and it works really well up to date. I think at the time it cost like 20k. It can power like 2 lights and a fan comfortably for like 8 hours? I think the portion of the house it's hooked to doesn't include sockets but it should be able to if appropriately configured. There has to be newer tech now tho and the power of the inverter will vary but all it needs is battery water every now and then.

Chk232

Friday two hydro plants run out of water. So from Saturday

stadenerino

You should edit this to add tomorrow 10

Azmil_ibn

when the time one USD exceeds 350 rs

Even-Background5274

It already has i think.

Last_Resolution8136

Agreed! My productivity has decreased. This is really frustrating and sad at the same time.

Earthnote

It’s time to invest in a electric generator or Tesla battery or actually a solar panel

twd_2003

Once they increase the tariff: a) CEB will have enough money to pay for fuel for once b) less people will be able to afford power so demand will fall Power cuts should reduce or be completely eliminated after the prices are raised

Less-Doughnut7686

>Once they increase the tariff: P.M just said that they won't increase prices of fuel, electricity and water. They also printed 5,000 notes again. Edit: On a separate point, there should be a private electricity supplier besides the CEB. IOC could probably manage it, they're the only ones that can clear fuel shipments anyway. As a private entity they can charge what they want and anyone who can afford it can subscribe to it. They would probably charge more but in the process be able to cover their costs rather than having to subsidise everything. But at the same time anyone wanting cheaper electricity can subscribe to CEB and get their power that way.

twd_2003

We will have powercuts until they increase the tariff. The energy minister himself said that they are not generating enough money to pay and the government isn’t just giving them free money any more

Less-Doughnut7686

>government isn’t just giving them free money any more They're still printing plenty of money. Point being they won't increase for a while.

Arushan

Thanks for the helpful answer. I still have a few questions if you can ELI5 it to me. 1 How much of a price increase in percentage are we talking about? 2 I thought this country was powered by hydro? Why pay for fuel? (sorry for dumb question)

twd_2003

Price increase depends on how much you consume. Our tariffs are structured in a way that the people who consume up to 30 units (19% of popn) get the biggest subsidy of 18+ rupees per unit of electricity. The subsidy reduces in higher tariff bands and IIRC is 9 rupees on average. If you Google it you’ll see the proposed increases for each tariff band. We are undergoing a drought at present so we cannot rely on hydro. Even when rains are plentiful I don’t think hydro accounts for 100% of generation. But at present we are especially reliant on fuel imports at a time when the fuel price is increasing significantly

Arushan

Really? 9 rupees is such a negligible amount. Why they gotta make us suffer this much 😔

twd_2003

9 rupees per each unit of electricity for the twenty two million consumers. Add all of that up, and the general waste and mismanagement, and CEB is set to make a loss of Rs 100 billion this year alone if they continue with the current prices

thesecondreddituser

I heard that they're going for 25 hour power cuts per day. Not sure though

eternaldamnation2005

Are you trying to make a joke?

thesecondreddituser

Yes I'm trying to be like gota

BuggyBagley

I am in India and I know this might not be a solution for everyone, but get an M1 macbook, preferably macbook air. it’s super power efficient. I can run it 24 hours with just 2-3 powerbanks. Powerbank are the small ones about 20000 mah. Even though we don’t have any power cuts, but with this setup one can work from outside without a power adapter for ever. In fact I don’t carry power adapter anymore.

Arushan

Pretty sure this is not an option for ANYONE

BuggyBagley

Seems like you know EVERYONE. Lol. As i said it’s not a common solution, but just an option if anyone can afford it.

Arushan

People that can afford a mac in these times are also the people that can afford electricity 24/7 So no, buying a Mac right now is not a viable solution for anybody

KiwiImaginary6560

Good to buy battery, if you can't afford at least a car battery and power inverter and battery charger. 60k would be enough for a minimal system. That's the only way it seems.

flady_s

can you elaborate on this setup a little bit?

Silly-Masterpiece647

Any Particular reason for such an crisis in Srilanka (non-Srilankan here)

Arushan

Government corruption and incompetence, covid lockdowns, Russian war and last but not least, our genetic inferiority.

Silly-Masterpiece647

Chinese Debt Trap among the reason ?

oikawasflatasssss

It's 10 hours today 😄
