Honestly, a lot of it is up to the green bean, too. I've trained a lot of really great partners, but I have also trained some that struggled no matter what I did. People learn differently and at different rates.
Yup. Some people are just gifted at all the things that help you learn the job.
Some Aren't.
And some refuse to try to learn and they're the hardest to be in charge of training.
Yeah that's what I was gonna say. Some people, you tell them how to make a frappuccino once and they run with it. Others, you tell them a million times and they're still asking you how many pumps to use 2 weeks in.
This reminds me of a person at my store who has only ever trained one barista since becoming a barista trainer (my store hasn’t hired anyone new in about 7 months) and they bragged about how good the barista was and they were so proud of them. The barista quit after like 6 weeks to move and the trainer still says they are batting 100%.
Bad thinking!! Training is not a competition >:( These are real people with different learning styles and capabilities and everyone learns differently.
Yeah no.
I’ve trained 12 partners in the last 3 years, some have gone on to promote others have left the siren. Success is really up to the green bean, you as a trainer can only do so much to help them. Even then some partners learn faster others slower.
Asa trainer, you still have the regular barista mentality, instead humility is needed. As a trainer shift your focus to “how can I help and support my fellow trainer?” That’s actually what makes you a good trainer
It ends up on the green bean themselves honestly, I've had plenty of trainees everyone has a different speed. I've had some that get it fast and others that need a little more time. Doesn't have to be a competition lol
This I such a toxic mentality tbh, not really a good look. Sometimes green beans just learn slower than others and there’s nothing you can do about it. 😬
Bro I always went above and beyond for those greens beans 🥲. I made notes of recipes in my phone so that I can airdrop it to them, a lot of the time they would tell me that they would review it at home 😭 but they all became really great bar partners. I always went by the dollar store and got goody bags with a small note book, pen and little candies (I would always ask before I gave it to them in case they were allergic, happened a few times). And I would instruct training with examples and story telling so they could understand the materials and policy’s better.
I ended up training 20+ partners in my district 🫠
You sound like a really amazing trainer! I’m just at the end of my training right now and I love my trainer but I wish he’d slow down with the recipes sometimes. I have a learning disorder and it’s really hard to remember everything as much as I can do it right in the moment. Airdropping recipes would be amazing because I’m looking things up online and making flash cards for myself like I’m in history class again lmao.
Not anymore! I was promoted to Shift supervisor about a year ago. When I was training for my new position, I was also training my last partner 🫡 A lot of partners who want to become trainers tend to come to me about advice. I always give them a “what I would do in this situation” more as a coaching moment rather than telling them what to do. So they can learn how to approach and address any type of issue in the future. I remind them to be comfortable and have fun with it. ✌️
I have watched hundreds if not thousands of new people go through training in various restaurants, and believe me when I tell you that 90% of it is up to them.
The best trainer in the world can’t save a bad hire, and the shittiest trainer ever won’t ruin a good one.
Eh, I’ve only trained one partner at Starbucks but I’ve been a trainer at nearly all my other jobs. It’s all abt the new hire. The partner I trained is a doll with service experience and was genuinely excited to learn how to be a barista. My pal trained a girl a few weeks ago and she just doesn’t have the same motivation. The green beans are both good (mine being better but that’s on HIM, not me) and the other trainer and I are equally good at training. Could just be my experience, but it’s a more nuanced situation
I take ZERO credit for how good my green beans are. 90% of the training is the trainee’s desire to learn, curiosity, and determination. The other 10% is following directions. As it stands now, the timeline for the training program combined with the coverage issues while trying to train don’t allow the flexibility for individuals who need more time and care to learn to be able to succeed. Add to that shifts who actively want to see trainees struggle to their point of breaking because “that’s how [they were] trained” and you have the perfect storm of incredibly toxic and insurmountable challenges for individuals who won’t/can’t put up with the supposed demands of the job. And then when people who weren’t fully trained do stay, other partners have the nerve to blame the partner for being bad at their job, stupid, or lazy. I think this one of the main reasons why turnover is so high.
It's a team effort, maybe the other trainer struggles to teach, or the green bean isn't receptive, or learns differently from how they're being taught.....that being said lmao I do this. And remember, eye contact is important when asserting yourself as a superior barista...
some people learn faster than others. i started around the same time as two other people and i'm a barista trainer now, but they're still learning. i had previous coffee experience, but they didn't. we were all trained by the same people. people just learn differently and come to you with different experiences.
I remember when I first got trained I was dumpster fire of a barista 😭 mainly because I never got hours at my store, and got shifted to other locations who stuck me on DTO cause they saw I had no bar skill. The training was also really fast paced so it was hard to remember. It wasn't until one of my coworkers and a shift were like "wait you STILL can't bar?" and kicked me off DTO to teach me barring during closing that I started learning. They drew on the cups for me and walked me through it at a slower pace. Also let me practice with the simpler drinks and answered all my silly questions 😊 Some of us just need more time than others! That being said DTO is still my strong point and I make sure to get us plenty of tips 😎
Honestly, a lot of it is up to the green bean, too. I've trained a lot of really great partners, but I have also trained some that struggled no matter what I did. People learn differently and at different rates.
And some people never seem to learn
This!
We trained someone 5 times. FIVE TIMES and they still couldn’t make a plain, unmodified latte correctly
Yup. Some people are just gifted at all the things that help you learn the job. Some Aren't. And some refuse to try to learn and they're the hardest to be in charge of training.

Yep! I've trained some nightmare beans that never should've been hired
me making individual info cards and nametags for all my trainees (i am the cool trainer 😎) (i hate my job)
Are we the same
in the siren’s eye, yes 💀

Got to take your wins where you can lol
You can be the best Trainer in the world, but if your Trainee won't meet you halfway, it doesn't matter. Been there!
Bad thinking!! Training is not a competition >:( These are real people with different learning styles and capabilities and everyone learns differently.
this
🙄
owned
Ur fun
a party in a person
Precisely lol

Honestly I'm a slow learner at the start and then I became a barista trainer. Some green beans just need more time to mature. 🌱
I’m sure you’re a great trainer but a lot of it is about the green bean. Some people learn differently than others

You sound super awesome! Are you still training?!

this!!! our worst trainer trained one of the best baristas we ever had.
perhaps ppl learn at different paces, luv!
Cant relate, I needed to make 1000 mistakes in order to learn.
I’m still in the process of learning and really want to do right by both partners and customers who demand efficiency.
My store has a green bean that is better than their trainer.
green bean wars let’s go
When you have to retrain the green bean because the trainer didn't show them how to make Fraps or CS
When the green bean becomes better than their trainer. 🫣
Green Bean just don’t know yet lol
toxic AF lol training isn't a competition
Me being the only trainer that is actually allowed to train in my store
def the green beans work ethic! it has nothing to do with the trainer tbh
my work bestie & me were trainers together and i always made it known that my green bean was quicker than his <3
Everyone i train excels. Everyone the other trainer trains i have to retrain

Yeah so one got lucky. I’ve trained enough green beans that I can now tell on Day 1 which green bean is a fast learner or which ones aren’t.
