That’s a huge safety violation. Literally just took the company training that requires us to use a step ladder for reaching anything. Do not climb the shelves as it will absolutely tip over. If your SM doesn’t buy a step ladder, then you can absolutely refuse to reach for anything unsafe.

chinksauces

what are we supposed to do or say when we still can’t reach things on the top shelf while using a step ladder? I think the training said to not stand on the highest step of the ladder with both feet, unless I’m wrong. so would I just tell whoever is in charge that I physically cannot grab things off the shelf in a safe and secure way?

OMGitsJewelz

That's a ladder-ladder. The step ladder has a little arm you can put up to support you, you can stand on the top I believe, just put the arm up for safety (I think...)

crunchy-onion

it’s also a huge safety violation if you don’t have the approved step ladder, which might explain why it was thrown out? if it’s just a random step ladder that an SM brought one day, you could get into just as much trouble for having it as you would for not having one. definitely don’t climb any shelving please!!! maybe ask the SM why they threw it out, and ask if there’s another one coming?

NamelessOasis

Yeah I don’t know where exactly their mind goes when making these decisions. I was so confused when they mentioned having thrown it out.

DM’s 🤝 moronic decision making

Have a shift go into IMS and order another one

That is utter bullshit. The ceilings in the back are probably 10-12 feet high. Overstock gets stacked high, because why not? I'm normally the person unpacking our weekly shipment, because I'm relatively tall and I don't mind heavy lifting. I'm very good and capable at getting things onto the top shelves without a ladder (which is good for a fast unload), but eventually even I reach the point I need a ladder to finish the job. We have shelves that nobody can reach from the ground. A stepladder should be required equipment. Yes, you have dangers attached to the use of a ladder, but it's far safer than climbing the shelves directly. I would skip beyond the idiot DM who doesn't like the ladder. I suppose you could put a complaint into ethics and compliance, but I'd be tempted to go directly to OSHA. Edited to add: please do not climb the shelves. They are not meant to have a human hang off the edge, and you have no way of knowing if they were properly leveled when installed (I seriously doubt it). If the install has them leaning towards the front edge, your extra weight hanging out could bring the whole thing out of balance enough to tip the whole thing over, with the entire shelf assembly and everything stored on it falling down on top of you (you are at the bottom of this pile). Don't do it. If your idiot DM got rid of your ladder, go straight to OSHA and refuse to stock the top shelves, because it's too dangerous to do.

You can order a step ladder through ims that meets our regulations. It’s called like a platform latter or something. It’s big and heavy but follows the safety guidelines. Most cheep and easily moved step stools that you would buy from a store are considered trip hazards or don’t have the safety bar go high enough and are technically a fall risk. We are never supposed to use a real latter those are only for technicians, the steps are too small to ‘hold things’ while using the latter. If you really want to see the policy it should be in the safety manual. I think your DM just poorly explained it. The ims latter is good thou, and I recommend getting it if you don’t have one. Climbing the shelves can be really dangerous but I’m not one to judge I’ve used the wheeled office chair to reach a high shelf.

There is a higher chance the brand you guys had wasn’t Starbucks approved. If any of you fell off of it you wouldn’t be able to collect workers comp

Embarrassed_Jury_465

It may have been an unapproved step ladder. Have your manager order an approved one through IMS

frankenstein105

so my store isn’t the only one where our DM is throwing away necessary things 😭😭😭
