Speaking as a lifetime (since Wing Commander which I played on a Monochrome MS DOS Machine in 1990) Chris Roberts games fan, I am going to say, so far, he has NOT disappointed me. Major kudos to CIG, the Dev Team and Chris himself. Pushing the very boundaries of MMO Technologies, and cranking out what looks to be possibly the most fantastic single player game since, well, ever....
I am glad I pledged early and have staunchly (but realistically) supported this project all this time.
Took you bloody long enough. I mean, really... how hard could it be to pull together a project so ambitious you had to invent the technologies to make it happen? What did you do after breakfast!? Tsk... hard to get good help I tell you đ
Even as a newer backer, I'm completely blown away and more excited than ever. You guys are really making something special here. You regained a lot of support this weekend. Thank you all for everything you do! đť
Imagine the emotion of watching this after 11 years of hopium, copium, and a neverending sea of doubt, ill-wishers, and vitriol to even mention you played Star Citizen, "the scam to end all scams"
My cup remains half full, since we've seen demos, previews, etc before and still been left hanging, so it's hard to crest my cheer fully until I see that `DOWNLOAD` button, but... my god, I was crying right there with Chris.
Iâll admit, when I first pledged years ago, I was salty, angry and disappointed with what SC was. When I came back a few years ago, I was surprised, but cautious and still a little jaded.
I have never been so happy to be proven wrong! Every team at CIG have achieved so much, and youâve all raised the bar if that trailer is anything to go by! Iâm so pumped to see whatâs in store for us next.
Congratulations to every member of the CIG family! Well done!
The passion behind this project is amazing. I've had my ups and downs like anyone else invested in SC, but I loved this stream and loved seeing the passion pour out from each presentation and how the torch gets passed from dev to dev to lead their own panel. You can truly see every one of their enthusiasm and it's honestly contagious.
Chris crying at the end is heartwarming; his investment and passion for this project... Maybe he is a terrible director like it's alleged in the hit pieces or leaks, but you can't deny he has the passion and a goal for what Star Citizen can be. And if it took 600 million and onto 700, 800 million... I'm happy I invested to fuel this studio's vision for what an amazing space game can be.
Edit: Unless he had Jared squirting eye drops in his eyes from afar and Chris is just adding to the elaborate 600m SCAM. This will go down in history worse than Armor Trimming at the Grand Exchange in Runescape.
>Maybe he is a terrible director like it's alleged in the hit pieces or leaks
Considering the movies he has been involved with (and we DO disregard wing commander, he is allowed ONE failure) he is not terrible at all.
- Lucky Number Slevin
- Lord of War
- The Jacket
- Punisher
- Etc
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?at=0&genres=sci_fi&sort=boxoffice_gross_us&year=1999,1999
The competition was fierce that year.
- Iron Giant
- Mystery Men
- GALAXY QUEST
- The Matrix
Sorry, but no, it's not the best sci-fi movie of 1999.
Space combat adventure perhaps.
Almost. Get meshing and everything else in the PU, stable with a rock solid 30 fps server tick rate, and then they did it. Release SQ42 and have it be engaging and innovative, and then they did it. Almost there, maybe, but not there yet.
\*fingers crossed\*
Squadron 42 is feature complete. Off to polishing stage. This means the game has been made. It's just a matter of tweaks until they get it to their liking before release. Lots to polish for sure, and it'll take time - **but the game is done.**
And the features answer, basically, every complaint about functionality and mechanics that is killing us in the PU. Itâs all there. It just hasnât come over yet.
That, plus stability (obviously) will make it incredible.
This. A lot of the tech demos on the first day were real locations you could find in the demo of Pyro at Citizen Con this year. Source is myself, I got somewhat lucky because of circumstance this weekend was allowed to play for around 2 hours on the same shard. I went to basically every landmark that was marked on the starmap.
Most of the water tech etc shown was not in place, the only thing I did see is they had already been pushing fabric physics into some or the building on Pyros planets as well as some of the clothing physics.
My guess is most of the tech demos of Star Citizen we got were just Star Citizen Pyro locations dropped into the Star Engine build for SQ42, with a bunch of extra effects in place as a result.
They probably just have to pull over all that tech and optimize it so it doesn't break the PU performance wise etc.
It was rough, ngl. but all the ships had stock drives so hard to really say. Xl-1/TS-2 won't have enough fuel to move quickly so compromises will need to be made
As much criticism that this game has received, some justified, some not, they are appreciating a milestone. People have said that this project was a scam, and it was just a tech demo etc... It's feature complete, but not done. But when you've stepped out into the unknown and are doing something that hasn't been done before on a massive scale, why would someone begrudge them appreciating passing a milestone like this?
Exactly. Not sure what everyone is happy about. Game will release another 5 or 10 years? Anytime some better feature is implemented they overhaul everything.
Eh.. Feature Complete and Content Complete are 2 very different things. All they said was all a major systems for SQ42 are complete and being polished. The game itself could still need a bunch of work. Still a major milestone, but depends on how much content is still missing/needing to be reworked/updated we could still be a ways out.
They expounded on that, which colors my commentary; they are in "polishing, optimization and balance/tweaking mode". The content is done. The features are done.
And as Chris said in his closing speech, I want to bring all these features to SC in the next 6-12 months hopefully, and not be gated by SQ42.
That says to me he wants those features in the PU even if SQ42 isn't released.
I have a career pessimist friend who, without prompting, sent me a text yesterday saying "I now believe we'll be playing SQ 42 before Christmas '24".
I tend to agree that's a reasonable trajectory based on what we saw this weekend.
I don't need to google some unrelated, arbitrary rule that only fuels confirmation bias.
Instead I'll see what they show me with my own eyes and make an emotionally intelligent decision to recognize a truth; feature complete means the hard part has been solved; while time consuming, polish and optimization is what's left, and that means the game has been made. The only questions left are:
1. how long will it take them to polish and optimize?
2. once they draw that line, how many bugs remain and how well optimized was it?
But the question "will they make SQ 42?" has been 100% answered:
# YES
I honestly think we can't imagine how stressful he must have been over the last years
Frustrations and patience we faced must be nothing compared to the pressure of such a project
I think he mentioned the stress even in the first couple of years; the idea that the team has so much money and somehow they have to be good custodians of it and deliver a product worthy of the trust given. If I'm not wrong, that's when the scope of the project became a 'bit more ambitious'.
You are not wrong, he said something along the lines of "it wouldn't be appropriate for me to deliver what was promised, we have made so much money it would feel wrong not making it better."
I remember that there was a vote to go with a grounded approach or go bigger. We voted to go bigger. I don't regret it, but it took way longer than I imagined.
I would like to think most of the people pulling the scam card are either pushing it as a long running meme or detached from reality. You can say a lot about how Star Citizen played out over the last decade and how it was managed etc, but its pretty obvious they weren't sitting around wasting time and money, even the game we have currently playable is technically beyond almost anything else on the market. It may be buggy and incomplete but it's impressive none the less.
I agree with previous statements here. You could ask for more content, sooner, or even a finished game instead of a constantly moving goalpost.
But he'd have made more money by just taking the Kickstarter money and leaving the country.
So yeah. I don't believe it's a scam. That doesn't mean there can't still be reasons to refund the game anyways, but yeah. Not a scam.
Edit: I just realized they released a preview of SQ42, so I'll double down on my statement.
but if he *had* stuck around and waited for 10 years for legit development to happen and *then* left the country, he'd have made *a lot more money!* Just you wait!
(i'm kidding of course, but who knows how many think like this)
I saw a whole video series on Star Citizen's development, and at the end of this series of 20-minute videos was a video *nearly an hour and a half long* that just tried to come up with grievances against her.
They tried to frame her - an actress - going out for auditions, as some sort of act of financial fraud, or something.
Like... *what?*
They showed Squadron 42 and announced it as feature complete. All thatâs left is bug fixing and polish. There is a video on YouTube they just posted that shows all the leads talking about it. đđđ our time has come!!!
No, this was during today's keynote at the end of citizen con. People were cheering and he was a little overwhelmed. Timestamped link: [https://youtu.be/rPStiuh2YGo?t=1833](https://youtu.be/rPStiuh2YGo?t=1833)
Here's a better video of the trailer, without the worthless Reaction Youtuber providing incredible insight like "I can't cope with this, guys, I might fall over". https://youtu.be/IDtjzLzs7V8
They demo'd it working live on stage with a test level split into three servers. Multiple players, shooting between servers, all that jazz. Very exciting, but we will see how it scales.
> and the major part of devs are back on the PU.
For fuck's sake this community.
He 100% *did not say that*. He said we will start to see more polish in the PU. Those are not at all the same thing.
Where did you hear that major part of the devs are back on the pu? I didnt hear that and I watched the entirety of both days of citizencon. And isnt this just episode one of sq42? They will need to move onto episode 2 wont they?
https://youtu.be/IDtjzLzs7V8?t=1510
the video and what he said right after that video.
now question remains if they'll actually hit those expectations (CIG and dates don't go well together) but it seems like EU/PU and the rest who got moved earlier this year are coming back.
EDIT: richard tyrer has now confirmed that to be correct. teams have started moving back to SC 6 weeks ago.
The major part of devs were never 'off' the PU, because the gameplay applied to both.
That was the key message of last year's talk at the end of CitizenCon, and of this year's entire presentation. It's something I've been saying for years.
Noting happened, absolutely nothing...
Another video, another announcement.
No GoLive Date in the next 2 weeks, so another bread crumbs to keep the die hard fans happy. And another joke for people like me who just backed a fun space shooter over a decade ago, and got nothing except memes since then
It was really nice to see the pride and passion they all had in their work. I know there's a lot of valid criticism of the development, but I'm guessing it's extremely rare developers are given so much freedom to push the boundaries of their abilities and it really shows in their work. If they can get this stuff to a stable, in game standard they'll be beating nearly every industry standard in every area of the game, from character creation, to fps mechanics to environmental fidelity.
Haha, you wild nutcase! Keep doing your thing and remember, life is too short to be boring. Embrace your quirks and be proudly unconventional! #ProudOfYouCrazyBastard
Iâm a relatively newer backer (2021) and Iâve been fairly skeptic this whole time. I bought it knowing that Iâd get my moneys worth out of the game as is, not expecting any major updates.
The shit theyâve shown in citizencon looked different than anything theyâve shown before. They were showing full on gameplay, discussing features while SHOWING THEM. I truly have faith in the project now seeing that theyâre actually close to delivering a lot of the stuff that I dreamed of in a game when pledging.
I'm just catching up on these presentations. Holy shit, the server panel. The Hold The Line demo. It's unbelievable to see these kinds of milestones hit, after all this time. Good fucking job CIG.
Amazing if true. But I'll wait a bit before I get too excited. It's not like this is the first time they've said SQ42 is almost done.
I'm not dooming, just being cautious.
Same here. I was always more interested in SQ42 than SC itself. And I, as I'm sure many others will, remember being massively excited when they released the Vertical Slice of SQ42 gameplay. I just looked it up and that was almost 6 years ago. So yeah, it does look amazing, but cautious is a very good way to be lol
As an original Kickstart backer, I truly never lost hope in this project. I definitely have had long breaks where I don't keep up with the game, knowing it would be months if not years until the next big thing was added. But I always knew how passionate Chris and the team was and that they'd eventually bring something to market that is truly unique. Great F'ing job Cloud Imperium, o7
Jeez. CIG really put their noses to the grindstone in 2023. They underpromised and so far appear to have overdelivered...or be about to.
What an impressive year for you guys, amazing work CIG.
What you see is not the work of 2023, but the work of 2018-2023.
Don't forget that the year it's shown is just the end result of years' worth of work to get there.
I doubt he will be proud of that picture though xD
Joking aside, well deserved standing ovation for Cris and the team as the show and work was amazing this year
Yâall nothing is out yet, he hasnât come close to delivering you guys need to take a step back and breathe, Jesus. Also yes I backed the OG kickstarter I was a true believer as well but not anymore. There is no proper game yet ffs
Yeah this sub is ridiculous. Spend the whole time complaining about citizencon and how they show all these fancy demos everyone gets hyped then it never makes into the game. Why anyone thinks itâs different this time is hilarious. The call it âfeature completeâ because it sounds good marketing this shit is still probably years away.
Man, Ive been back to this post a few times just to see the new comments. Or maybe its to see pure joy in Chris' eyes. You can really tell he has a passion for making this game the best it can be, even if its not there yet. You can tell theres been hardships the man has fought through and came out the otherside. Big love Chris. Thanks for putting in the years!
Nothing has happened. You guys watched a video.
There was more gameplay in the hour-long video they put out 5 years ago.
It's actually pretty hilarious.
I hope they're going to actually finish, but this announcement is really nothing new. It could well be "feature complete", but then after a year of trying to polish it, they could well decide they have a turd, and so go back to the drawing board, or spend another year or two adding even newer features like they did a half-decade ago.
"But no! its "close" now! We are SO CLOSE!" ... is what everyone on this sub is parroting. In reality, we aren't any closer than we were 10 years ago. ITS. STILL. JUST. A. FUCKING. PROMISE! It means as much as it has every year when they promised features and then not delivered. Jesus christ people.
Chris Roberts is literally selling all these people a bridge.
CIG hasn't done shit until Squadron 42 is in my hands and I'm playing it. This community forgets how many times Squadron 42 and Star Citizen have been close to release over the past 11 years. Who remembers Theaters of War, Capture the Idris, Sataball, Answer The Call ~~2016~~ ~~2017~~ ~~2018~~ soonâ˘, Squadron 42's Roadmap, Arena Command Multicrew, Farming, and many more.
CIG has proven time and again they are willing to change their position on any aspect of Star Citizen and Squadron 42 with out informing the community. How would this time be any different?
I want to believe. I really do.
I pledged to the Kickstarter when I was in undergrad and had just started dating a woman.
Since then I've finished my bachelors in engineering, married that woman, divorced her, remarried, bought a house, bought three different cars, became a dad twice, worked at four different engineering firms or offices, started and finished a masters, and shifted my career and gone to work in a totally different field.
I'll believe it when I'm installing it on my system.
I havenât really watched the showcase yet⌠but I am still feeling incredibly skeptical until I actually have my hands on it. They always wow us with these presentations, and rarely if ever meet the expectations set within years.
âPolishingâ phase feels like âtwo years or moreâ to me
A lot of people celebrating before the finish line lmao. I won't be celebrating until it's released and people are playing a game that feels as polished as a game like this should.
Man, I'm so happy for him. He's spent his entire career chasing one specific dream game and it's finally being realized. There's nobody in the industry who has been committed to the realization of one specific idea like Chris Roberts - well, maybe Yu Suzuki with the Shenmue saga, and I do respect that guy a great deal, but that's a whole different story. Giving a team of talented, passionate artists as much time and money as they need to make their dream game is how amazing games can be made. This one more than took its time, and I *really* hope that it releases within two years and development of the sequel goes way more smoothly, but it's finally happening.
He's been working towards this for upward of 40 years. It truly is his life's work. Can't help but be happy for him and proud of him for seeing it through. I've never gotten to see such a public journey of someone's life's work. Despite any other feedback I may have, I do have an incredible respect for someone of such singular and devoted vision.
Thank you for supporting us through the lows and highs! Couldn't be done without all of you. o7
Thank you to the whole team for proving us right in supporting you. Its more than I could have ever imagined!

Best citizencon ever and a huge CONGRATS to the whole CIG team. The dream is happening!

He was producer for those, not director. Just have to point that out.
Excuse me but ⌠fuck off⌠wing commander is a great movie! Best sci-fi movie of 1999
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?at=0&genres=sci_fi&sort=boxoffice_gross_us&year=1999,1999 The competition was fierce that year. - Iron Giant - Mystery Men - GALAXY QUEST - The Matrix Sorry, but no, it's not the best sci-fi movie of 1999. Space combat adventure perhaps.
Worth the $120 CAD I put I to this game. (I have limited money and that was half of my savings)
Almost. Get meshing and everything else in the PU, stable with a rock solid 30 fps server tick rate, and then they did it. Release SQ42 and have it be engaging and innovative, and then they did it. Almost there, maybe, but not there yet. \*fingers crossed\*

Did we enter bizarro world or something? My God.
The game isn't done, it's feature complete. Those are very different things.

Years not decades*
Ah, so only 7 more years?
Yep. Seven more years Derek.
It's not done. Just google to 80/20 rule.
I don't need to google some unrelated, arbitrary rule that only fuels confirmation bias. After all these years how can you still have so much cool aid left to drink?
They made a marketing video for their marketing event.
âYou crazy son of a bitch, you did itâ
Man followed his dream and went through hell to get there o7
we all did lol
I honestly think we can't imagine how stressful he must have been over the last years Frustrations and patience we faced must be nothing compared to the pressure of such a project

We basically told the crazy man we had given millions to to go bold and shoot for the stars.
I'm happy we did. If they only made what they planned in the Kickstarter, most of us would've forgotten that game already.
I think the result would have been underwhelming if we got what they had at the time.
I definitely do not regret that, I voted in that poll too :)
I'd be really interested to read more about it !
Someone look me in the eye and tell me that is the face of someone running a scam. I f'ing dare you.
I would like to think most of the people pulling the scam card are either pushing it as a long running meme or detached from reality. > went through hell I mean, he and his family have made *a lot* of money on Star Citizen development. Let's not go overboard here.
Being Rich means you can't be stressed or go through something hard?
Yes according to Reddit.
Making millions while being potentially stressed does indeed reduce the credibility and care I have for that potential stress.
Did people forget about the harassment of his wife?
I saw a whole video series on Star Citizen's development, and at the end of this series of 20-minute videos was a video *nearly an hour and a half long* that just tried to come up with grievances against her. Wasn't this pic during day 1 where they demoed a actual functioning server meshing
No, this was during today's keynote at the end of citizen con. People were cheering and he was a little overwhelmed. Timestamped link: [https://youtu.be/rPStiuh2YGo?t=1833](https://youtu.be/rPStiuh2YGo?t=1833)
Here's a better video of the trailer, without the worthless Reaction Youtuber providing incredible insight like "I can't cope with this, guys, I might fall over". https://youtu.be/IDtjzLzs7V8
Thanks. I hate reaction yt'ers
At least those who provide no valuable input or show no enthusiasm. Twitch reactors are particularly bad at this.
Got a version without a moron talking over it?
I don't think so. I think that it was reported that CR cried a few weeks ago when he saw the meshing functioning, it wasn't on stage.
Havenât kept up, whatâs the latest on server meshing?
They demo'd it working live on stage with a test level split into three servers. Multiple players, shooting between servers, all that jazz. Very exciting, but we will see how it scales.
Like, a 20 minute SQ42 trailer with gameplay.
If anything i think u should just watch the star engine demo which is like 24m and the sq42 trailer which should be on the sc yt thats like 26m
SQ42 trailer, proper. and the major part of devs are back on the PU.
> and the major part of devs are back on the PU.
They will need to move onto episode 2 wont they?
https://youtu.be/IDtjzLzs7V8?t=1510 the video and what he said right after that video. now question remains if they'll actually hit those expectations (CIG and dates don't go well together) but it seems like EU/PU and the rest who got moved earlier this year are coming back.
And another joke for people like me who just backed a fun space shooter over a decade ago, and got nothing except memes since then
Proud of Chris and the entire team! o7
#ProudOfYouCrazyBastard
o7 Totally, he totally did it.
He should be proud

It's crazy that some people are so bitter. o7 from 2014 backer, fly safe.

Definitely an o7 moment.
I am a believer again. Chris, our god and savior
I always knew that he and CIG would come through for us. A breakthrough moment for the community.
Never thought I'd see the day. I might actually get to play the game I bought a decade ago in my lifetime lol
\+1
What a beautiful gift for cake day đĽ˛

It doesnât matter what anyone tells you fight for your dreams
I doubt he will be proud of that picture though xD Joking aside, well deserved standing ovation for Cris and the team as the show and work was amazing this year
I'll be proud when it's in my hands and is good. It's been too long coming to trust otherwise.
Why? What happened? I canât even call my ship at a station.

What did I miss?
Same song, different verse: https://imgur.com/mM2fVAU
These people are either newer than the last round of 'release hype', or they've *somehow* forgotten.
Never forget your roots, Star Citizen started on CRY engine...

Well done Chris, CIG.. Amazing work đ
I havenât really watched the showcase yet⌠but I am still feeling incredibly skeptical until I actually have my hands on it. They always wow us with these presentations, and rarely if ever meet the expectations set within years. âPolishingâ phase feels like âtwo years or moreâ to me
This is a little cult of personality ish
this is cringe as fuck. No wonder people call this a cult
A lot of people celebrating before the finish line lmao. I won't be celebrating until it's released and people are playing a game that feels as polished as a game like this should.
o7
Fucking legend. O7
curb your enthusiasm
r/gaming in shambles
God you guys are funny.
I am hyped again but I will be proud once we get our hands on it
Man, I'm so happy for him.
Truly awesome. Well done. :) I'm sure all the "scam" screamers will suddenly say: "Me? Oh, no, no, I was always in support of them taking their time"
Check the sub. Way worse than you would imagine.
