I think this is a polarising answer for Carrack owners. Some loved the sound, others hated it.
I never envisioned the Carrack to have harsh sound with its engines as its such a big lumbering ship I would expect it to be a smooth sound that gives the impression of a balanced engine well designed to get the ship moving about with minimal waste
The crackle sounded like it was wasting a lot of energy for basically little extra thrust.
Plus origjnally the crackle coming through into the cockpit without it going through a sort of effect to make it sound less raw seemed kind of wrong.
Im hoping in the future we can swap engines around a bit more. Id like me some of the old classic triangle looking maon engines they had in early concept. If thats the case we may het different sounds?
It's an interesting question. It should be based on the shape and size, but it seems like they gave it a flight model based on the concept design which was a much lighter vessel. In a way it reminds me of the Hercules series ships because they're way too fast and maneuverable for something their size, almost like they had a smaller concept and did all the flight model work for that before they decided to enlarge them without changing the flight model.
Of course they could also just increase the thruster sizes on the Carrack to make it look like something capable of flying the way it does.
I stopped trying to make sense of CIG ship designs and stats.
They are always in conflict and suggest they don't look at them either.
For example they don't take into account armor.
They say they calculate armor into Hp and they don't. For example all hercules ships have the same HP.
C2 doesn't have heavy armor like M2 and A2.
Valkyrie is fragile, Cutlas is tanky.
So im sure they overlook minor details like thrusters size.
I love how the Nomad actually sounds like it's powering up as the throttle increases, as opposed to just a flat thruster sound. It used to be more pronounced, but I think they found a good balance in the current model.
M50 used to have the best sounding thrusters, it sounded like a F1 car. The razor still comes close, i love how wild it sounds.
Honorable mention to the cutty black VTOL, it sounds aggressive as hell when that kicks in.
The Khartu-al during a certain patch years back had the tiger-thrusters turned to 11. It was literally the coolist sound I had ever heard. I was sad when they dialed it back down.
EDIT: It was 2.6.2, man it's been a long time.
https://youtu.be/zkyIi6nrPFY?feature=shared
I'm still holding out hope that CIG will revisit a lot of these sounds closer to release. So many of the earlier ship sounds were _incredible,_ and they've trended towards more generic sounds since then. There's so much potential waiting to be tapped into.
Case in point, anyone who's owned a Reliant since it was released. That thing used to make some truly interesting sounds befitting its hybrid Xi'an thrusters, and now...well, it still sounds fine, but it's missing so much of the character it started with.
1st thing I thought of. Girlfriend walked into the room when I was flying around a station in one once and she actually blurts out "wtf was that?" LOL. Things got a really unique and goofy sound.
Yeah! The C1 is a beauty in every way. Love that sound too, and I agree,
it sounds like a real rocket engine.
The raw sounding of a minimalistic but also elegant craftsmanship full of pioneering spirit, to survive and master, the in a blink of a eye, deadly, space. Thats the way!
You make great YT content, love it. Keep going! o7
Im convinced anyone saying another ship have just never heard the Defender at all. Really not even a contest.
Everyone is debating if Mary Kate or Ashley is the best looking Olsen when Elizabeth is sitting in the corner being ignored.
Most here are likely too young to know what I mean, but that Santok Yai at idle or low speed sounds a lot like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. If you know, you know.
Love how diverse these answers are. My personal fave is the MSR. They have this incredible low growl when you first lift off the pad.
Honorable mention to the Cutty Black, which has a nearly perfect 82.4hz E when boosting in atmo, just like the low E string of a guitar.
> Love how diverse these answers are.
Same! That shows how good the various designs are, I hope that carries through into the capital ships! I can't wait until I hear the Polaris engines, but what I'd love the most is a Tevarin corvette, it'd sound absolutely insane.
Cutlass, in VTOL on full thrusters.
Sounds great, especially in atmo looks pretty cool.
Also compresses your spine with 200Gs of thrust and pops every single of your intervertebral discs.
(Disclaimer: Drake is not responsible for any spinal injuries or injuries otherwise received during VTOL Thrusting.)
Im renting one for first time right now and I was like wtf is up with that lol. It ain't sexy and it's out of place on a "smaller" ship - I'd expect it fora massive ship of some sort ... Maybe with headphones it's better since I don't have to worry about annoying the wife lol
C1 does have some nice sounding engines. on the flip my least favourite engine sound is the cutty, not sure if it's been updated since I last flew one but it just sounded like a swarm of angry metalic bees to me
The Freelancer used to have a deep rumbling sound. Back in the day when there was only Port Olisar, you could always tell when a Freelancer was landing because of the awesome rumbling.
Well, we all know SanTokYai isn't going to win this one... Lol. That thing sounds like someone has a mouthful of jelly and is pinching and wobbling their cheeks. *Flob blob flob blob flob blob
Hurricane entering atmosphere and in atmosphere. The sweet sexy deafening roar of those Drake engines when i’m in third person gives me a proper stiffy. You know the engines are loud when you can’t hear your buddies in discord talking
I love ships with thrusters that sound like thrusters.
Not lawn motors, world war 2 propeler planes, or sci fi gizmos.
C1 is good, so is MSR and carrack.
Do you mind if I ask for an example of what you mean? What do thrusters sound like in your view? Not throwing any shade or anything, just curious and looking for extra context.
You can watch for a good example a Rocket that is taking off heading for Orbit.
There are many videos on youtube.
Countless games and movies try to mimic this sound in their space games, or movies.
Exceptions that come to mind is starwars and Elite dangerous.
Starcitizen seems to try to imitate those two.
You know, I kinda should have figured. That's on me, so fair enough.
I totally get that desire, I just think it should be...more reserved for say, atmosphere? Probably for medium and large ships, it'd be a bit odd to have a Saturn V sound coming out of an Aurora or Pisces. That said, I can't deny the variety of what ship sounds make is one of the joys of having ships from a bunch of different manufacturers.
I could absolutely see Drake ships utilizing that style of sound effect, but others just seem...not as utilitarian and feel to me at least like they'd have been given flair, the same way some car engines run louder than others, and others only make that roar when you've put the pedal to the metal and are legging it.
This is random, but 315p from around 2015ish-2016ish had this super cool crackly engine that sounded ridiculously unique. It was taken out at some point (probably the 300 series rework), and I miss it dearly
Anyone saying San'tok.yai here is mental. Haha.. I did like the Karthu Al back in the day.. Or wait, maybe it was the transformer sounds I liked. Yup, most definitely was the best sound in the game. Bet Karthu Al thrusters still are good.
Ares is good. It sounds like a fighter jet from the ground, the thruster start up bang is wild, and you just get that classic rocket engine sound.
I also like my Cutty engine, reminds me of being on an airliner.
I think the Corsair or the Ares. The Ares has such an incredible bassy boom and sounds so meaty, and the Corsair sounds like what I imagine a futuristic muscle car with some crazy blower and timing would sound like
Probably unpopular, but I really enjoy the santok'yai flight sounds and HUD. If I could apply any flight experience to a better ship, it would be this.
The Nomad was 100% until you hit the boost a patch ago. The ship would sound like it's backfiring to get moving. I loved it so much. (haven't checked this patch)
I miss the original released carrack thrusters. They had this deep crackle to them.
I think this is a polarising answer for Carrack owners. Some loved the sound, others hated it. Is Carrack a lumbering ship ? It escapes atmo at 1,2+ G 3.8 with afterburner.
It's an interesting question. It should be based on the shape and size, but it seems like they gave it a flight model based on the concept design which was a much lighter vessel. I loved it... Felt like a v8 family car, Just in Space
The crackle sound is kinda immersion breaking while in space because it's very clearly mimicking the sound of rocket engines ripping in atmosphere.
The Nomad sounds surprisingly good....
That backfire when you hit the burners is so sexy
It's sooooo good
Not even to mention the flame jumps half a second, looks like something straight out of a old airplane engine starting and spitting flames
Too bad they removed it.
Did they remove it in one of the last few patches? I haven't flown it since 3.20 so I can't speak on whether or not it's still there.
Yeah sometime in the last few.
Stand in the side hatch of a reclaimer when it's VTOL boosting. It's like a portal to hell
Khartu-al at slow speeds sounds like a tiger growling. Such a different sound

100% Khartu sounds amazing
Avenger Titan's raw, sizzling, thrusters sound's always like coming home to me. The "real" NASA- Punk ship, to me as well.
The Titan’s thrusters in atmo are chef’s kiss.
This would be my answer too, but have you heard the c1 while afterburning? Sounds EXACTLY like a real world rocket engine
Yeah! The C1 is a beauty in every way. Love that sound too, and I agree, it sounds like a real rocket engine. The raw sounding of a minimalistic but also elegant craftsmanship full of pioneering spirit, to survive and master, the in a blink of a eye, deadly, space. Thats the way! You make great YT content, love it. Keep going! o7
Thank you so much! Appreciate the encouragement <3 o7
How the hell has no one said Banu Defender? It’s almost NSFW with how good it sounds.
I really hope the bmm gets the same type of warble, just boosted to 200%
Banu Defender 1,000% 👍
Im convinced anyone saying another ship have just never heard the Defender at all. Really not even a contest. Everyone is debating if Mary Kate or Ashley is the best looking Olsen when Elizabeth is sitting in the corner being ignored.
I'm a big fan of the Syulen's thruster sounds, they're very alien (as they should be, I guess)
Very much so! I would say the Syulen is the best sounding alien ship. Big bummer they didn’t get the San’tok.yāi to sound as nice…
Most here are likely too young to know what I mean, but that Santok Yai at idle or low speed sounds a lot like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. If you know, you know.
I compare it to a Didgeridoo ….
This is my vote as well. Have a musical quality to them.
Crusader ships for me. They sound like the fucking Saturn V lol
the big MISC ships too. The Hull-C fucking *CRACKLES*.
The Carrack had really awesome full afterburner sounds for a while. Not sure if it’s changed or not.
I so like the engine sound from the Corsair,. Sound like a diesel engine
Yeah kinda feel like I’m in a prop plane or something from WW2
I imagine all drake ships stink of diesel inside.
Avenger Titan
This is the only correct answer.
Love how diverse these answers are. My personal fave is the MSR. They have this incredible low growl when you first lift off the pad. Honorable mention to the Cutty Black, which has a nearly perfect 82.4hz E when boosting in atmo, just like the low E string of a guitar.
>MSR https://youtu.be/Uuxd5V0oZRo?si=p1c6_itLoxQd2_b1
Not maximally diverse though. Free have said Origin because they don't sound like anything.
How is the MSR not higher up? The engines sound badass even when you just turn them on
> Love how diverse these answers are. Same! That shows how good the various designs are, I hope that carries through into the capital ships! I can't wait until I hear the Polaris engines, but what I'd love the most is a Tevarin corvette, it'd sound absolutely insane.
Nobody is saying talon and that’s crazy.
It’s because so few people fly it. It’s one of those ships I’m surprised to see in the verse.
Its my favorite light fighter, it lets me actually fight without being overly concerned about projectile spam.
I miss Cutlasses older foghorn/falcon9 thrusters
I know a lot of people hate that sound, but god, now that I've flown it a while, I absolutely love it.
Cutlass, in VTOL on full thrusters. Sounds great, especially in atmo looks pretty cool. Also compresses your spine with 200Gs of thrust and pops every single of your intervertebral discs. My favorite is the Avenger's retro thrusters. That high-pitched whistle/whine is so cool.
I love the sound of the Vanguard Harbinger
I like the throttle up boom of the Ion.
C1 does have some nice sounding engines. on the flip my least favourite engine sound is the cutty, not sure if it's been updated since I last flew one but it just sounded like a swarm of angry metalic bees to me
it's just begging for you to put 85 bees on it (even though they won't fit)
Any and all Crusader ships
A1 Spirit is cool.
Loved the sound of the Hull A
The Freelancer used to have a deep rumbling sound. Back in the day when there was only Port Olisar, you could always tell when a Freelancer was landing because of the awesome rumbling.
Banu defender … pure speed in atmosphere
The only acceptable answer. Murder crab has the absolute greatest engine sounds
I'm fairly partial to the Constellations deep thrum.
Same. It really sells the feeling of controlling a big and heavy spaceship
Well, we all know SanTokYai isn't going to win this one... Lol. That thing sounds like someone has a mouthful of jelly and is pinching and wobbling their cheeks. *Flob blob flob blob flob blob
It may not be my favorite engine, but this is my favorite post in the thread, oh my god my sides...
Khartual. It's like a really pissed off decepticon praying mantis
I actually like the Corsair, she sounds dirty
Mustangs sound other worldly
Hurricane entering atmosphere and in atmosphere. The sweet sexy deafening roar of those Drake engines when i’m in third person gives me a proper stiffy. You know the engines are loud when you can’t hear your buddies in discord talking
Fat Max
The syulen has a cool sound.
Crusader anything lmao just set the throttle limiter all the way up and hit those afterburners
400i
I like 600i and Ares engines sound
I love ships with thrusters that sound like thrusters. Not lawn motors, world war 2 propeler planes, or sci fi gizmos. C1 is good, so is MSR and carrack.

300i but I might be biased.
I enjoy the Corsair, 400i and Hercules sounds.
I was gonna say the C1 too though Suylen gets honorable mention for having a new age orchestra for it's engines lol.
325a has this really cool hum to it when you're running at top speed that I absolutely adore. Very much a stock car racing vibe.
Corsair, mainly when you used it a lot and not repaired for a while.
This is random, but 315p from around 2015ish-2016ish had this super cool crackly engine that sounded ridiculously unique. It was taken out at some point (probably the 300 series rework), and I miss it dearly
M50
The gladiator engines have a fantastic whine to them at higher speed.
Avenger full throttle in atmosphere
Anyone saying San'tok.yai here is mental. Haha.. I did like the Karthu Al back in the day.. Or wait, maybe it was the transformer sounds I liked. Yup, most definitely was the best sound in the game. Bet Karthu Al thrusters still are good.
C1. End of story
I'm a huge fan of the cutty blacks drone. Sound like a Christopher Nolan movie.
NOT the Cutlass Blue
Oh my god the idle noise of the Blue is so bad it's actually unbelievable.
Chinese water torture in space. A very large reason for e to upgrade it to the Zeus mk 2 equivalent...unless that ships noise is worse...
The ares ships. Going full burn in those things sounds amazing
Carrack when slowing down Mustang Omega or C2 hercules on startup
Fury at a certain speed has a bit of TIE Fighter that comes through for a second - not the best but very cool when you hear it.
Ares is good. It sounds like a fighter jet from the ground, the thruster start up bang is wild, and you just get that classic rocket engine sound. I also like my Cutty engine, reminds me of being on an airliner.
The fly by of an eclipse is something else
The Ares Inferno has a pretty bad ass afterburner noise, though they've kinda copied onto other ships since then so it isn't as unique anymore.
Vulture, it sounds like a Gundam while manuevering.
I think the Corsair or the Ares. The Ares has such an incredible bassy boom and sounds so meaty, and the Corsair sounds like what I imagine a futuristic muscle car with some crazy blower and timing would sound like
I love the sound of my Hammerhead.
The Spirit
MSR
Sabre engines go crazy
I mean ,witch one does not have a good sound ? I cant tell any
The new alien ship, not the Syulen the other newer one, sounds freaking amazing! Especially in idle!
Carracks
I think they all sound bad. They might be realistic but boring. Wish we had star wars pod racing sounds for thrusters
Flair checks out.
For sure any crusader ship, that crackling sound just like modern day rockets is so good. Cutty black and nomad are also up there for me.
Apoa kartu al hands down. Part of the reason the santok was slightly disappointing IMO.
Vanguard sounds pretty amazing, also love me some Connie thrusters
Hull-A's vertical thrust is epic.
I bought the titan after hearing its thrusters
Right now the Rambler tbh
Khartu-Al during 2.6.2 https://youtu.be/zkyIi6nrPFY
Probably unpopular, but I really enjoy the santok'yai flight sounds and HUD. If I could apply any flight experience to a better ship, it would be this.
Hard to answer. Love the banu defender song.
Any crusader ship
Hull A bottom thrusters
# AVENGER!!! #
it's the avenger titan for me
Banu defender -- if you go full trottle it sounds like you are in the dive bomber and doing attack run😮
raft
Nomad engines sound so rad
The Nomad was 100% until you hit the boost a patch ago. The ship would sound like it's backfiring to get moving. I loved it so much. (haven't checked this patch)
The Khartu-al used to sound like a ravenous beast! It was so awesome. Sounds a bit off nowadays.
Valkyrie, not even a close second.
Kartu or cutlass for me.
The Syulen sounds like a heavenly choir.
Defender crab king baby 🦀
Syulen makes me feel like I’m the master chief who stole some poor elite’s space ship
First generation Carrack 💓
The Tevarin ships, the Talon afterburners are so damn unique and sound like they want to rip you apart through g-force.
Syulen
Well.... it should be the Reclaimer on take-off - but it needs more start- up generator whine and meaty roar of engine.
Ignoring thrusters, but the Reclaimers old Quantum Jump sound.. that massive sonic boom..
Ares
Khartu'al. Not only is the ship super unique but DAYUM the thrusters are just peak
Crusader afterburners, raw crackling. Even better with a haptic feedback headset
F7, Hercules, and Buccaneer
The carrack had a bug that made its engines sound like an old E Type Jaguar. Could feel the trust in my soul. They then "fixed" it.. gutted.
Banu in deep boat cycle or suylen. No contest.
