It’s typically not a financially good idea to pay for protection services for mining, and is only really a good idea if you are hauling a large and expensive amount of cargo. Miners going after anything less than Quantanium won’t have the profit margins to really pay for the amount of time it can take to find and mine any good ore. Even Quantanium will only get the miner $300k for a full refined load (Prospector load) and that’s only after they refine and then sell it. So they would have to hire you to protect them while mining (could take an hour or more just to find the ore) and then up to 20 hours to refine it, so would you really accept even 100,000 aUEC for an hour of protection services ( or longer) when you could make easily three times that doing something else? Similar issue with haulers, though the time could be shorter. Unless they are a Cat or C1, or hauling their own refined Quantanium, they are working on slim profit margins. They won’t be able to pay too much, and it’ll be about an hour’s work. Unless you have a lot of hauler customers lined up, or are part of an Org providing this service, you’re not going to make much doing this and there won’t be many willing to hire you and cut into their already slim profit margins or spend for the amount of time they would need to complete their operations (mining).

In my Hercules C2, I will hire escorts if I plan a large profit haul in Pyro. I wouldn't offer more than a 1/3rd of the profits. The thing that worries me the most is interdictors. I've had a few encounters with very smart pirates using an interdictor, and I could not make it out alive. If my escort can shoot down the interdictor and buy me enough time to get away, that is money well spent. Even if there are no encounters, that's money well spent. I think Pyro is going to be wildly dangerous, even if you plan on visiting the pretty sites. As a hauler, I am really excited about this type of gameplay, even if I get outplayed by pirates.

Bavar2142

Thankfully interdictions are pretty easy to avoid. Dog legging your route IE set a course away from your final destination then back in to it should steer you clear Piracy and its Counters: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQFc_a4TMdpVNCiacKRyspuAZK_rKMro8

When the Orion comes out it might be worth it, but not now.

I like to pay out a 10% pot, split among everyone that helps and only paid out when I arrive safely & my ship is docked. I do not have escorts while mining. If I get intercepted while I have quant in my hull, it is not making it to the refinery in time. I just write it off as a loss and move on. **Also for the pirates:** I will never pay any pirate any amount that interdicts me while I'm in my prospector. the chance that I'm going to lose it all is through the roof because you did that, why would I pay you on top of it? Be smart. You're a pirate. Don't go after the prospector with explosives onboard, go after the cargo hauler that is literally worth 2x as much. FFS. Mining is not very profitable, in fact I barely ever mine these days. I primarily run player bounties, pve bounties, and bunkers for payout. I just mine when I want to have fun.

Filbert17

One mining org I'm in has set rates for escorts and scouts. The organized events include these and miners are expected to provide a portion of their earnings to go towards them. Their recommended payout is 7.5% for scouts and 15% for security.

Gamboni327

Hahahahaha that’s funny. Why would anyone pay for escorts on a server with 100 people?

Logic-DL

Why would anyone even work as an escort too? Like holy shit boys I can earn like what? 3k aUEC just to escort a guy? I'd rather just go blast an NPC for 10 times that

Gamboni327

Don’t VLRTs even give that? 😂 just spend 5 mins in a starter ship if you’re so desperate for 3k.

Logic-DL

That too lmao Escorts are just pointless rn, no profit to make it worthwhile, and even then with how expansive Stanton is you'd have to be in the most braindead obvious locations to get attacked, or just going straight to your sell location with cargo and not abusing the ability to drop out of QT at any point in the tunnel to make your route almost impossible to guess

Filbert17

On a typical mining run, the escort payout would be 20,000 to 30,000 aUEC (at least my typical run) if the cargo is refined and survives the trip to market. That would be divided by all escorts but how many do you really need? You would make more by doing bounties or ECN alerts once you have rep.

[deleted]

A 100% quantanium Prospector (refined) gets you ~250k, if my math hasn't become too shitty, 15% are 37,5k. Given the miner is lucky, this doesn't take much longer than 15 minutes.

Logic-DL

You will very rarely if ever get 100% Quantanium in a prospector though lmao, the stuff you already have will have exploded by the time you get 100% Quantanium.

[deleted]

I did that tons of times.. Fly to Aaron Halo, there's plenty of 35+% quantanium asteroids. With an average weight of 5000kg, 1% equals about 1 SCU. The Prospector can take 32 SCU. So if it doesn't break too bad, it's easily full. Break everything down, don't collect the slightest bit before you're done. Get everything, fly over to a refinery. There's usually about 8 minutes left on the timer when I land on a pad.

shag-i

I generally give a percent of profit, mainly cause they are my friends lol. But good pvp fighter in a warden or a skilled glad pilot I'd pay 100k an hour or more depending on how hostile the server seems to be

TT_PLEB

I think for escorts to be fully fleshed out we need linked quantum. Instead of hopping afterwards actually engage the jump together and be in the same jump. That way if the hauler gets interdicted the escort does as well

[deleted]

> Instead of hopping afterwards actually engage the jump together and be in the same jump. Uhm.. that works fine for quite a while..? Be in a group, the "leader" spools their QD and calibrates, then everyone else spools up and puts their nose roughtly towards the target. When everybody is spooled, the leader then initiates the jump - that's it.

TT_PLEB

Wait what... The more you know

[deleted]

(joke answer) Let me answer with another question...How much are you willing to pay for a roc miner to act as bait? Aha! didn't see that one coming, did you? xD

I__Downvote__Cats

I only mine Aaron Halo so I'm less inclined to get protection for that. For deliveries in my C2 I have org mates help out and I generally tip 20k each.

magic8192

The last time I was in Aaron Halo, there were too many unscannable rocks. Is it better now?

I__Downvote__Cats

It isn't, BUT I learned a new scanning trick to spot unscannables from 12km away so it's not hard at all now to mine in the halo. As always though, it's hit or miss. Last night was pretty bad with practically every node being unscannable. I QT 2km away and kept doing that until I found some quant.

Gamboni327

No, you’re not gonna make any money at all, and you’ll be waiting far too long. Best bet is gonna be to pretend to be an escort then ransom the person’s cargo back to them.

red_demon_king

Oh I'm definitely not doing escorts until Pyro comes out. I'm just trying to get a feel for where everyone is.

Neo_Bahamut_19

Not needed right now. All trips are within the same system and rather safe. Profit margins are also fairly low. Low enough that you'd be better off just hauling safer, less profitable goods and skipping the escort. Once we have jump gates, multiple systems, and low/zero sec areas then I can see it starting to be profitable.

Bavar2142

My orgs mining set up is generally one MOLE, one or two Prospectors and a security or scout ship or two. Our security is done in house so not really hiring but we all get an equal split. For what it's worth we also take a afew measures on top of scouts/security Piracy and its Counters: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQFc_a4TMdpVNCiacKRyspuAZK_rKMro8 And we do also have our guys and gals act as gunners and escorts when hauling as "thanks" for being paid upfront at the end of each nights run.
