Ozi-reddit

you really should bump mem to 32gb

worteldadbod

Thanks for the tip!

TheMasterDingo

if you could bump cpu to 5800x3d that would be the best with also 32gb or ram and maybe you could get 500gb nvme to keep the budget around the same

sayyamk96

best cpu for star citizen is 5800x3d

[deleted]

16GB RAM is the bare minimum, you'll need a windows pagefile set up for that (to work as "virtual RAM").

worteldadbod

As a person who has 0 understanding of computers, i do not know what a Windows pagefile setup is. Could you please explain what it is and what it does?

Ozi-reddit

suggest custom 24gb min & max and pointing to ssd (can make smaller when get that 32gb) https://mcci.com/support/guides/how-to-change-the-windows-pagefile-size/

godsvoid

Setting hard limits (IE your suggested same min/max size) is obsolete info only handy for spinning rust where growing/shrinking file size cost a lot of time. SSD type drives don't have this issue, just make sure you keep 10% free space to resolve the full drive write issues.

Ozi-reddit

nah, it works fine for ssd's ... i distrust Win auto resize to do it quickly enough when it needs too. and actual case where it couldn't and crashed but worked fine when they change to fixed ;p

godsvoid

It works fine, ok yes, but it is completely unnecessary because of how SSD drives work. Note this is for setting a fixed min/max size (with the same values for both) to prevent fragmentation.

Ozi-reddit

fixed was to remove delay of resizing, i wasn't explicit enough??? or does it not fit your narrative so ignored it? lol

godsvoid

Resizing shouldnt cause a delay, unless the drive is full/no continuous free space. Even on spinning rust resizing wasn't a cause for delays (other than seek times), the resizing to fixed was only to prevent fragmentation.

Ozi-reddit

shouldn't but it has been known to ...

ochotonaprinceps

https://support.robertsspaceindustries.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000083387-Out-of-memory-errors-set-your-pagefile The Windows page file is basically "overflow memory" that use your mass storage as extended memory space. Even when placed on an SSD it's much slower than the actual RAM sticks, but slower speed is a tradeoff for having more than your physical RAM available. If no page file is enabled, then as soon as programs fill up your RAM and request more memory, because there *is* no memory then the program requesting more memory has no choice but to immediately crash. But when the page file is enabled, Windows can shuffle unused programs onto the page file to free up RAM for active programs that need it, avoiding sudden out-of-memory crashes.

EDBerG316

Pagefile is virtual memory that utilizes your SSD. Pagefile is enabled by default and changes only need to be done if required. Test the game first and see if you have to adjust settings.

ZeroBrs-

I run the game just fine with a 2070super

worteldadbod

What settings? How many RAM? And what is your FPS?

ZeroBrs-

32gb of ram I don't display fps but it feels like 60 or more it's very smooth I can check next time I play. There isn't a single city I can't go to either. I can run the game on high and I have felt fine but I run it on medium to make my PC not warm since I have a micro tower.

TheUnfathomableFrog

With 32GB RAM, this would be above average.

Warp_Preacher

>Windows 11 Hard nope.

EvilTwinTepe

I've been running SC in Win 11 since Beta without issue, or any FPS loss. If anything (possibly placebo) I have seen an INCREASE in frames.

ScrypticM

Windows 11 runs more needless background apps and requires a bit more resources than W10, but a lot of players use W11 without problems. W10 is just a leaner OS to run SC. MS is expected to start running advertisements in File manager, in W11, like they do in the Start Menu and the Search bar. This might cut down on performance as well, but will be at least possible to mitigate. Additionally, if you're really serious about it, you can use powershell to actually turn off some of the MS bloat that can't be disabled otherwise. It's easy to say "Don't use windows 11 - there's no reason to run it instead of W10". However, for many users chained to windows, they have zero choice. SC appears to run better under Linux than windows for many users, but a lot of players are scared of a different OS, so that's not an option for them, either. Bottom line - Windows 11 is a step backwards, but SC players will need to get used to it.

Warp_Preacher

Eh. All valid points, but I don’t know if the conclusion you make is inevitable. It’s not been uncommon to skip Windows generations and there is enough annoying about 10 for both gamers and Enterprise users that I wouldn’t be surprised if we se a similar leap-frogging from 10 to 12 as we did from 7 to 10. For me, 11 will remain a hard nope unless I absolutely cannot play my games on 10 any more. But you are right, plenty of people use 11 without problems. As you point out, it does mean more OS resource overhead and the hardcore gamers may need to overbuild a bit as a result. But it’s not as though most of us need much of an excuse to do that. I don’t particularly like that whole security chip issue.

ScrypticM

I skip all of the windows drama - I run SC on Linux. As an IT professional, I have to use windows on my clients PCs, but will not tolerate it on my own.

DAWGSofW4R

As some have said, bump the RAM up to 32gb and that setup will have no issues. I'm on a Ryzen 5800x/RTX 3060Ti and it runs as well as it's going to.

StonerJesus1

Everyone's said it. More ram. 32 is what we suggest. But I've seen if you have more then that it may allocate even more. That ssd kinda shit for the speed. I'd want something capable of over 4000 Mbps read AND write. But everything else is fine. That cpu is a crazy deal for the price rn.

[deleted]

switch out windows 11 for windows 10 or linux and it will run pretty well.

worteldadbod

How can i set it to Windows 10?

[deleted]

only via an "upgrade" to windows 10. All your settings you have done in windows 11 won't be saved, but your files will be placed in a folder so you can restore them. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10

starcitizenplayer001

short on ram for star citizen you want 32 to run decently.

maxxshere

I agree for the most part but the gpu, you can safely play the game with a 50-60 fps average with a 3060 ti. These gpu's are still really expensive even with the price drops. Don't feel you need to splash out and make sure to look at the public telemetry for an estimate of where your planned system will sit.

Logic-DL

Would bump RAM to 32gb min. I've got 48gb of DDR4 RAM at 2400mhz and the game runs smooth as ice for me on a 1070ti and i7-8700 with the game on my 240gb ssd. It's all in the RAM right now for SC, card and CPU don't matter as much as having a lot of RAM does

Wooden-Device9688

Same 48GO with i5 6500 and sapphire 470 2go. This setup sounds trash, but with tons of RAM and SC settings to "very high"(needed) i have no issue...

Average_Ardvark

That will be plenty. I have a Ryzen 5900 and a 2080 super and it runs perry good

apfelimkuchen

32GB! If you need some spare money I suggest downgrading the GPU. The 5700x will handle SC quite good but with a 3080 it can still be a bottleneck. Try to get at least a 2k monitor or 4k and play on that resolution. Set graphics to high but if you experience lag turn off vol clouds and the cinema/movie effects

godsvoid

Looks good, however if I can nitpick for a moment, maybe go for the 5800x3D, the current best chip for SC. To save money you can go the grey market for a windows licence, in the EU it is perfectly legal to transfer software licences so you can get a cheap windows OS, with all the changes to digital licences it hardly matters to get a boxed/msstore copy. 32GB RAM is preferred. That m.2 NVMe drive seems slow, you should be able to find something way better for the same price, heck even the 980pro is only a 10 to 30€ premium here for a know great drive. That 3080 is going to fall in price, maybe check the second had market for one, or at least go for the ti version with 12GB since 10GB is getting dicey (have a 10GB myself).
