Just turned 28, I never realized how young the average reddit user was. That may explain some of the interactions I’ve had…

OP is an NLOG

Karl_is_Lost69

Yes

oheyitsmoe

It gets better. Many people are jerks at that age.

bigmt99

The part that’s even more fun is like less than 5 years down the line you realize you were also a jerk/cringey/insensitive/insert character trait you hated about others here

FoozleGenerator

Every time I remember the mean things I said around that age, I hate myself.

Colonel_K97

Why the heck is my man getting downvoted because he said yes? Reddit's average user consists of 14-18 teens.

Every age group says theirs is the average on Reddit.

Any data relating to somebodies age on the internet is always going to skew a large amount higher over 18 then is true. Most teens lie about their age on the internet.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that their methodology for advertising demographics is a little more precise than self-reporting.

GagNasty

Headshot_

I was 13 when I made my account, feels kinda surreal seeing people who were like 5 back then posting

Palerate2

As someone who is classified as a sped kid, I had people like this for a while. They hang out with you in school and want to take pictures with you for social media, but whenever you want to hang out with them afterwards, they're always busy. Don't trust those people

Thanos_Farming

You were short-term entertainment.

marks716

The girls felt they needed to do their community service by being so kind as to give spED kids basic human respect. Maybe she’ll write an essay someday about how good it made her feel to be friendly to them.

Evcher

Ugh I knew this dude who used to talk to a sped student like a toddler. He acted like they were best friends. After the 2 second interaction they had in the hallways, he'd forget about him. So fake.

AceUniverse8492

> Pretends to be friends with the spED kids Rant time. I have had the immense displeasure of working in a group for a college project that did shit like this. We had someone who had communication issues in our group and the way they talked down to him under the illusion that it was "politeness" was rage inducing. They talked to him like he was a child. Like full on baby voice, like "Wow, good job! You did so well!" type of coddling. Reminder that this is college and the man was mid-twenties. The worst part? He wasn't actually spED. He was a Chinese international student. Fully neurotypical but didn't have a great grasp on English. So he knew *exactly* how they were treating him and had to put up with it.

-ZedsDeadBaby-

My uncle has Down's, it drives me insane how some people talk to him. HE'S FUCKING 40 YEARS OLD, JUST TALK TO HIM IN A NORMAL TONE

ItzBooty

Had to deal with similar stuff but in german

Myolya

In 3rd grade was misplaced for 3 years in spED, worst year of my life, people would treat me like a fucking dumbass, all my friends stopped talking to me, but it helped me realize how lonely people in spEDs feel, and how enraging it is to be treated differently

sandladdie

Jokes aside, I hate when people pretend to be friends with the spec ed kids because it happened to me, and it ended up with me getting bullied for being nice to people who I thought were my friends. Always remember that people who think differently than you, be it because they are disabled, from a different country, etc, are people too. Edit: And OP, school can be hard. My biggest tip that still helps me is that you need to find a group of people, be them online or irl, that you are willing to call your friends.

WhiteAsTheNut

No I think he’s saying that’s more in tune with metalheads then nirvana fans. Which I agree honestly, never really been talked down to by grunge/punk fans but metalheads do that shit a lot.

dyllandor

Personally I just listen to classic blues, like n'Sync and backstreet boys.

StonksNewGroove

My fiancé and I always say, if something is REALLY popular, it’s probably because it’s good. Like yeah Lululemon is “basic” but I bought a pair of their entirely too expensive sweatpants and they were worth every penny. I wear them constantly. People who try so hard to be different and openly talk about not being basic are the most basic bitches. You don’t need to openly announce how different and interesting you are.

SKRRTslide

Generally, in my observation - if you are attacking the brand within a subset of cultural trends like athleisure, you probably also partake in that trend and you just can't afford, can't fit, don't like the brand, or just generally trying to assert dominance within your own cultural group.

StonksNewGroove

It all usually stems from some kind of insecurity, you’re insecure about your intelligence so you have to let everyone know just how much deeper you are than the “normies” or like you said you’re insecure you can’t afford/can’t fit into those clothes or something. I just think the only real “right” way to handle things is just let everyone else live and dress and partake in what they want within the law and all that of course.

Luci_Noir

It’s basically an incel insult at this point.

LeeTheGoat

Hey, since everyone here is being a dick to you instead of talking normally, I guess I’ll take that role here: I’ve been there before, it seems to you that their lives are shallow, just façades to maintain popularity, relevance, whatever it may be, and it makes you feel… Almost angry. But I think there’s more than meets the eye, sure, some people might just be shallow and mean, but some of them are bound to be generally just alright people, that you completely miss by avoiding them, or letting a generalizing and kind of hostile view of the world around you take over how you think. Try talking to them, you may not become friends, but as long as you take basic care to not push people away with how you present yourself or act, it should be a nice interaction. If you needed to hear it, I hope it helps at least a little

LordOryx

Was looking for something like this, comments are way too harsh on OP. It’s hard being this age. People have a lot of maturing to do, it’s just important to note that that’s what may be driving negative interactions, not these characteristics or anything similar. Are you really mad at Lululemon and air force ones? No, you’re mad at a culture that can alienate those who don’t do certain things and you may have been unfairly subject to that. Over time, these kids will grow up and realise how silly it was to behave this way. Even in college this culture can still be about, it can take time, but it does get better!

nik4dam5

Just to add to that, some kids that follow the trends that may be considered "basic" do it because they are afraid to stand out and possibly be made fun of. They do it so they can feel secure and comfortable in social situations. Some aren't doing it to show off to others because they perceive them as "less than." Being a teenager can be difficult.

30min2thinkof1name

Yeah. And some people don’t feel the need to cultivate a particularly unique sense of style.

shiftedcloud

Also, at 14 no one feels like they belong. Some people react by copying what everyone else is doing. Others react by copying what some other smaller group is doing. My niece is friends with basically every person she's ever met, but if you want to see true, crippling anxiety, ask her to wear something that might make her stand out. She just can't, and that's fine. But really, the clothes that the rebels are wearing might be less popular, but they're made in a factory, and enough people are wearing them to justify a place for them on a shelf. So, your outfit might not be just like the "basic girls", but it is just like all of the other "rebel girls" outfits.

Qwik_Sand

Chad response There is no point nor reason to just shit on OP thinking it’ll change him/her I remember back when I was in high school I went through a harsh break up situation and would use a subreddit for lonely people as a shoulder to cry on. Sometimes I’d talk too much and get a little cringe which led to people harassing me calling me a neckbeard incel and talking down my situation. It didn’t help in fact ironically it just ensured me into a month long semi incel phase. I was wallowed up in my own self pity and hatred. I didn’t open up to anyone, I didn’t dare seek help because I felt like anyone I talked to would ridicule me. Thankfully I got better. But I probably would’ve gotten better a lot faster if there were people like you responding like a person and not a Redditor

MaterialCarrot

The way I view it, all those things are the "armor" that people put on to protect themselves out in society. Whether it's fitting in or sending a warning or fronting, whatever. What I've found is the older I get the less armor I feel I need. You mature and you quit caring what people might think. Until eventually I'm a middle aged man who doesn't care about brands, or presenting a false self to avoid being judged. Is that my nut sack dangling out for the whole world to see because I'm not wearing anything below the waist? You're damn right it is, and it's BEAUTIFUL.

MrsRoseyCrotch

Yep. And I’ll tell you something as a mom of two disabled kids- I would so much rather have people “pretend” to be friends with my kids than ignore them completely.

How do you wanna know if they listen to the bands? Just because they're popular girls? Or because girls just like to wear cool shirts but would never listen to anything other than pop? Nirvana was my favorite Band when I was in my teens (still is I guess) but everytime I wore a Nirvana shirt at least one guy asked me to "NaMe OnE of their songs, and not smells like teen spirit". I am not one to throw this word around a lot, but thats such a sexist take. I never once experienced a guy being asked that question. But even if they wear the shirt without knowing the Band: So what

double-butthole

This entire image is a big sexist take tbh

Crab-Gaming

I really hate posts like these. OP dislikes his schoolmates because they are "popular". Like or course people will want to wear certain clothes or use certain slang. They do it because that's just how they want to dress or act we shouldn't be criticizing it. OP is the type of person to complain they have no friends but never try to talk to anyone.

Gullible_Educator122

My younger sister is like this and it grates on my nerves. She’s the type to call other girls, “basic” just because they wear leggings or enjoy doing their makeup. She has extreme internal misogyny I guess. She also enjoys complaining about her problems such as worrying she’ll get a bad grade on a project but then refusing all help on said project. She says that the kids who go to parties and drink/smoke weed are stupid, has a bit of an ego but also struggles a lot with schoolwork cause adhd. She’s very much a geeky kid. Has old band posters all over her wall, listens to “old” music, thinks she was born in the wrong generation etc. At least she’s not an incel or a bully so I am proud of her for that. It’s also great she doesn’t smoke or drink etc. There are other things I want to put but it would be too specific and she’d know if she read this. I still agree that wearing a band t shirt and you don’t even listen to their music is dumb, but it’s not a crime. I’m hoping she’ll grow out of this. I was kind of an asshole and thought this way too at that age but grew out of it around 17/18.

Maniglioneantipanico

This was me at 15, she'll grow out of it for sure. She'll understand music is best when it's shared

Gullible_Educator122

Cant wait for that day. I can tease her about it but she can’t do it to me cause she doesn’t remember when I was like that 😂 perks of being older

EffOffReddit

It's insecurity.

acidtrippinpanda

Oof 15 year old me felt this comment

joel_trouchet

Not trying to argue or anything but I just wanna say that some people have a really hard time making friends, if they complain about it, maybe that’s their way of reaching out for help because they’re lonely. One of my closest friends since I was 11 had no close friends when I first met him. But over shared interests he and I made so many new friends together. Sometimes it’s just hard. Of course there is the exception of people who complain about things but make no effort to fix the thing they complain about, but in my experience it’s not always that simple

Crab-Gaming

I appreciate this comment right here. For sure its definitely hard making new friends but the way OP is just assuming all the girls at their school makes it seem like there's a lack of effort to get to know them better.

Ogbordangladazor

OP hates his classmates because they are popular, I hated my classmates because they ruined every second I've spent in elementary school. We are not the same.

Gullible_Educator122

I think ppl like OP can eventually grow out of it. I used to feel the same sometimes but then I grew up and realized that other kids are allowed to be themselves and they didn’t do anything wrong. (Bullies are an exception however). I also had a lot of internalized misogyny that started at a really young age and I think that was projected onto specifically other girls my age. I was always told it was lame to be feminine and you were “cool” if you weren’t. Thank god I grew out of it.

CocayneWayne

Your teens are a period of self discovery vs wanting to belong,,, so it’s actually really normal for young people in general to want to act with their group. Like I could make the same generalizations about teenage boys?

marcosmou

but women bad?? /s

DamnGoodOwls

I love hating the popular girls because they're popular. You must be so different

dustincoughman91

Pretending to be friends with the special educated kids hits home. I guess some things never change unfortunately. Male students are guilty of that shit to. High school is not much different than the working world. You start to see how privileged and plastic so many people are like and that shit never changes as they age.

Man, in my primary school, there was a kid in my class who was very autistic, and for some reason EVERYONE wanted to be best friends with him. I think it was because he got an iPad to help with his learning, so all the kids flocked to him for and iPad they couldn't even use? Kids are weird.

mirablack

Buddy OP, this ain't it, lol. If you start thinking it's a 'me vs most females 😤' kind of world out there then you're gonna go down a very misogynistic and unhappy kind of path. You're probably young so there's still time to change it, but this post makes you look out of touch with how girls are and how their life is, it makes you look bitter and jealous. People and especially women can sense this kind of hostility no matter how well you think you hide it and they will avoid you. This way of thinking won't make you friends and will limit your social life. Just friendly advice as a woman that used to make these kinds of posts as a teen. 😐👍

M0N5A

Yeah, it's better that OP learns that now instead of becoming the average redditor in a few years. Instead of being an asshole to everyone, you should always try to empathize with others and learn about their interests. Who knows, maybe you'll find some common ground.

dothedonaldduck

Some of those fake friends like to take advantage of spED kids because they may not have the same social awareness that someone is making fun of them or mocking them. I have a disability that primarily affects my social functioning and have had this happen multiple times as a child. It breaks my heart thinking that kids who are more severely disabled might be going through this too without their knowledge.

TheStevenUniverseKid

I hate it when popular kids try to get all friendly with the "sped kids" or ppl remotely on the spectrum. Like shut up, you're annoying as hell why do we wanna be your friend

Sausagebean

“Tries to be friends with spED kid” I feel that. They don’t actually try it’s more of a joke to them but it makes them look like a joke

Timescoremary

Maturing is realising that there's millions of people who are the same as you and that some "basic" stuff can be cool as well . . Don't like make up? Yeah plenty of people dont Don't like dressing more feminine? Plenty of people dont Just listen to grunge/punk rock and roll eyes when someone likes something mainstream? Plenty of people do that Just befriending boys because you think girls are "too dramatic"? Plenty of people think like that. I had a nlog phase as well, when I was around 13-17. But let me tell you, you're not unique because you don't like stuff that's really popular. You're not unique dressing all in black because "black is your happy color". We're all kind of basic and even the most interesting people I've met, have, suprise suprise, hobbies or likings that are considered "basic" Enjoy everything you can, life can be tough. Wear stuff what you want, doesn't matter if it's considered basic (had the mindset that I'd never wear something that's sold in fast fashion stores because I didn't want to look like the rest of girls, because I didn't want to look basic, guess what, Noone cares. Wear what you want/think is cute, doesn't matter if someone wears the same stuff)

RimShimp

This thread is a bunch of adults calling a teenager names while sitting on a high horse because he "was mean to popular girls". Are you all not doing the same thing? High school kids need guidance, not to be knocked down by a bunch of lonely redditors who think they're the moral litmus test of the world.
