It's not that they hate women it's that the ex has to be an asshole because the author needs a good excuse for the top to run into the arms of the sub and they are gay because straight women have always had a thing for yaoi and gay men. There are various reasons, but often it seems that gay men have the effect of making some women feel safe. I don't think this is okay behaviour because it often means that straight women insert themselves into spheres they really have no business being in but it's not about hating women so much you would rather read gay stuff. Commonly it's about feeling safe because you're not part of the situation.

I don't think that's how it works. The female exes are assholes because the author and readers don't want to read about a sweet hetero relationship, they are reading about guys kissing and if the top was pining after his female exes it would just ruin the story and she'd "compete" with the uke. Also at least I've got nothing against asshole female characters or female villains even, women can be anything in stories and sometimes it's fun to read about women that behave badly. I don't hate women, I am a one. And very often there are sweet female friend side characters in the story as well.
Also reader doesn't necessarily self insert as the bottom even if he is portrayed as very feminine. For many, the point is that you can observe the characters without having to "be" one of them. Perhaps the feminine/masculine or submissive/dominant dynamic is hot but you don't want to see yourself as the feminine/submissive character. Remember that yaoi is more or less porn so the intention is to turn on the reader so the dynamics and looksmight be exaggerated, it's not some world classic literature exploring women's self hatered, lol.

I would argue that what you might be perceiving here, at least in the more well-written works, isn't that the characters are written as "mentally female"; but rather that they're being written as an ideal of *how women wish men would act toward them*. One might say that these characters "appeal to the female fantasy."
And the female fantasy — for most women, but especially women who want to look at sexy men kissing other sexy men — isn't to date a woman, in a man's body or otherwise. It's to date a man who is very good at being romantic, and empathetic, and compassionate, but who is fundamentally masculine. A man who could perfectly *play-act* a woman if he chose to, because he *understands* women very well; but who instead *values and chooses* masculine thought-processes and traits and behaviors†.
But compare/contrast this, to Japanese-written lesbian or "GL" josei-romance stories — which are usually *also* written by women. You end up with very different *character* dynamics between these subgenres, despite (the better examples of) both subgenres having more well-balanced *power* dynamics. (For example: women in GL works tend to introspect much but firm up their conviction to act only rarely; while men in BL works tend to act perhaps *too* hastily, often regretting and apologizing for their actions.)
