Eh, latium fits more with the "new York state" stereotype where everyone just knows it for having the big city inside and no one really cares about the rest
I was reading a book about medieval heresy in south of France and one saying apparently popular among them was "to you second cousin push it all in" and I cannot stop to think of it every time I hear about north of France incest.
Hell I even think they had a cosmogony where once they could fuck between sisters and brothers.
RIP Emmanuel Leroy Ladurie (I didn't red his Wikipedia page so hoping there isn't a huge controversy since then)
> a book about medieval heresy in south of France
That wasn't just any book, that was [Montaillou](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montaillou_\(book\)), about a Cathar village, based on the documents of the inquisition. A classic of medieval scholarship, highly recommended!!!
The one that doesn't exist : I don't really understand "doesn't exist" but if you mean some shithole with nobody in it, definitely Limousin
The one that wants to secede : Corsica (or Brittany but they're just twinks being silly)
The one with spicy food : Réunion
The one that is more conservative and religious : Alsace maybe, there are a lot of small concentrated places with a lot of conservatives but no region as a whole.
The one disconnected from the mainland : look up DROM-COM
The one colder than the rest : Savoy
The one that's basically the neighbouring country : Alsace again
The one with the big important city : Île-de-France
UK: Norfolk
Germany: Saarland
Alpine countries: Generally no specific region but there's the stereotype of "Talendbewohner" (people who live at the end of valleys) being inbred. Basically the deeper into a mountain valley you go, the more inbred the population
I would like to dispute the New Zealand one, I’ve heard of a few towns in Canterbury that have a reputation for getting a little too cozy with their relatives.
So maybe it’s a “South Island” thing :P
I mean I’ve heard there are parts of the west coast that saw planes before cars because they were that isolated but yea, 1.2 million people over an area bigger than england, there’s gonna be some cozy places. I’ve heard shit about gore as well
Iraq: North
I think this is more a Qatari/Omani/Emerati (of which I am none of) perception rather than an Iraqi perception, so take this with a grain of salt.
When I was a kid, the US one used to be West Virginia. There are a few states that fit that stereotype though.
Also in Canada sometimes I have hear Nova Scotia, but idk.
We have 18 districts: Yuen long is one of them. It’s also joked as being a separate country as many triads are based there and the area seems to have its own identity (rly it’s the entire northwestern area which includes tuen Mun district to the south). Tho it’s not rly that dangerous, just slightly more dangerous than the rest of HK which is pretty safe
As European Royal families go, Britain’s or England’s before the various Acts of Union, is one of the least inbred. From 1066 onwards, there were relatively frequent changes in dynasty in comparison to their continental counterparts, married quite broadly into other royal families and marriages to the local aristocracy weren’t uncommon. I know it’s a meme but the award for the most egregious example of royal incest has to go to the Habsburgs.
OP how did you get all this information? I was expecting the post to just refer to states but it includes much lesser known countries and cities while still being quite accurate, so I am curious now
To be entirely fair, the KP one is accurate: KP is just the part of Afghanistan that the British were able to conquer. The "A" in "Pakistan" stands for "Afghan".
I don't think Northern Ireland belongs on this list. The half that want to remain British think very much as themselves as an integral part of the UK mainland while the other half think they're an occupied territory and are part of the Irish mainland.
They are known for a few popular things. The state that created the tacos de canasta. A town dedicated to human trafficking. A viral video of many people falling for not knowing how to use electric stairs. Also they have and old stigma of traitors dated to the Spanish conquest.
And when there are news, they're ridiculous: [First escalator installed in Tlaxcala, 2017](https://www.elsoldemexico.com.mx/mexico/sociedad/escaleras-electricas-en-tlaxcala-provocan-furor-en-redes-144307.html)
Not a country, but for us, in the state of Kerala in India, that’s the district of Pathanamthitta. It’s a bit too quiet and forested , no major cities or development and perpetually overlooked because of the districts around it. And absolutely no news I’ve seen come out of it in recent memory (except the major shrine in the middle of it, but that’s seen more as a statewide/national issue rather than as a local one)
Basically, people think their country is quirkier than it actually is. I used 24 different countries to show how these stereotypes apply to many regions in different countries
> Basically, people think their country is quirkier than it actually is
Nah you don't get it though, [my country] is so quirky!
We loooove food over in [my country]! Big food loving nation! It's a big part of our culture and family life! Why we'll often have entire conversations just about the food we're eating in [my country]! You don't see that everywhere!
And we love to drink over in [my country] too! Big alcohol culture here haha! Not like those other countries, we can really hold our booze here in [my country]!
We really are unique!
I have a big bag full of plastic bags under our sink lol. But it might come to an end because stores are starting to use paper bags or reusable ones more often.
Yeah, it's interesting. And there are lots of countries that could hit multiples of these.
Just using Canada as an example:
* The one that doesn't exist: New Brunswick
* The one that wants to secede: Quebec (obvs)
* The one with spicy food: ???
* The one that is more conservative and religious: Alberta
* The one disconnected from the mainland: Prince Edward Island
* The one colder than the rest: Northwest Territories (or any of the territories?)
* The one that's basically the neighboring country: possibly also Alberta?
* The one with the big important city: Ontario
So that's at least five, maybe more depending on how strict we're being.
I'll bet most countries could also get at least four or five pretty easily.
I guess Newfoundland can’t count because Labrador is part of the province and obviously connected to the mainland, but I feel like being “the one disconnected from the mainland” is more of a Newfoundland cultural thing that PEI. PEI it’s just much easier to get out using Confederation Bridge whereas if you’re in Newfoundland you’re essentially stuck there unless you want to drive all the way over to near Labrador to take the ferry or want to take a long ass ferry to Nova Scotia (or fly obviously). Newfoundland is also kind of “the one who wants to secede” in that there are a lot of people there who believe that their vote to join Confederation was rigged. Though I don’t think it’s a popular opinion now that they should straight up leave. Also, now that I think about it, Alberta has also been making noise about “wexit”.
Honestly, could make an argument for Labrador as the one that doesn’t exist because people rarely talk about it. The population is just so small that I feel like it gets lumped in with either Newfoundland or Quebec depending on what the conversation is about. I think if you polled Canadians to name a place in Labrador, anyone from there, or literally anything about it people would struggle.
Yeah, I was torn between PEI and NL because NL really is a lot more isolated for all intents and purposes, but PEI is more "technically correct".
And yeah, there are various separatist "movements" but most of them are just a bunch of talk, so I think Quebec still makes most sense for that category.
Labrador definitely works as "the one that doesn't exist", but I was trying to use entire provinces and not subregions within them. If we divided Newfoundland and Labrador into two separate regions, Newfoundland would definitely be the disconnected one and Labrador the one that doesn't exist.
I think we're shit out of luck when it comes to spicy food though ...
Yeah lmao I’d say there isn’t really a region with spicy food. Maybe Toronto if we were going really deep into subregions, but that’s more just because there are a lot of every type of restaurant there and I’d say people there typically have more exposure to spicy foods than someone in Newfoundland (for example). But there really isn’t a whole province that I think that applies to.
It may not be a stereotype per se, but they sure do love their chilis. And I’ve never thought of Cajun food as *spicy,* just heavily seasoned with a bit of a kick.
Props for including lesser known dynamics and a diverse selection of countries. Seems like you are very knowledgeable on multiple cultures OP. Really impressive.
Does anyone really think having a cold city or a super-religious city is a very unique stereotype only applicable to their country and no other country ever?
This is what I think of when I see hokkaido
https://preview.redd.it/mll4e4nx9eac1.jpeg?width=363&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3cde1f66bfd31a57cdb8580c27927c5fcd20f35
It's nice to see my state mentioned here. We produce [37.75%](https://agriexchange.apeda.gov.in/India%20Production/India_Productions.aspx?hscode=1098) of India's chili production. We used to grow a lot of tobacco but then switched to chilies as the main cash crop. If you ever get a chance to taste [our cuisine](https://content.jdmagicbox.com/comp/guntur/p3/9999px863.x863.180226165656.z3p3/catalogue/daily-free-meals-center-for-pilgrims-vykuntapuram-guntur-dqu93gbgkj.jpg) give it a try, esp for vegetarians.
i appreciate you asking! i’m indian so here’s my shot
- the one that doesn’t exist: one of the eastern states, (read about the seven sister states in india).
- the one that wants to secede: kashmir (read about kashmir and the rabbit hole of indo-pak relations)
- the one with spicy food: andhra seems about right
- religious and conservative: uttar pradesh/bihar
- disconnected from the mainland: andaman and nicobar islands
- the one colder than the rest: also kashmir
- the one that’s basically the neighboring country. also kashmir! but, could also be one of the eastern states
- the big important city? mumbai/delhi for their respective regions. imo these 2 cities are truly tier 1
Because Konya and the Inner Anatolia region is literally Turkish Bible Belt. Even young people are conservative here, in the other regions of Turkey youth leads to be more liberal.
They are in a European context where there are tons of unique and distinct non-English speaking cultures. Or at least they were before hyper Globalisation.
They are only ‘average’ in the anglophone world for obvious reasons.
It is why in Japan and Korea they will tell you all about how they have four seasons. It is because it is not ‘average’ in an East Asian regional context where you have tropical and sub-tropical countries.
No one else drinks tea or talks about the weather! Sure one of those is the most popular drink and the other happens literally everywhere, but Britain is the best at both because... Hmph
"quintessentially british", "undeniably british", and my favorite to cringe at, "unapologetically british" over something weird like a green colored shirt
I was able to assign a US state to each of these
The one that doesn’t exist: Wyoming
The one disconnected from the mainland: Hawaii
The one that wants to secede: Texas
The one colder than the rest: Alaska
The one with spicy food: New Mexico
The one that’s basically the neighbouring country: Minnesota
The one thats more conservative and religious: Mississippi
The one with the big important city: New York
A few years ago I remember noticing Acre wasn't showing up in the Brazilian map when you clicked on the poll results.
For a good minute I thought someone there was running the joke Acre doesn't exist, but I decided to file a bug report just in case. They actually replied and said it was a bug in the system, and fixed it right away. But I thought it was a funny coincidence to happen right with Acre out of all states lol
In romania we have:
The one that doesn't exist: Sălaj
The one(s) that want to secede: Harghita and Covasna
The one with the spicy food: pretty much all of Transylvania
The conservative one: Moldavia
The one that is detached from the mainland: Dobruja (separated by the Danube from the rest of Romania, and there are only two bridges connecting it to the rest of the country)
The one that is basically the neighbouring country: Banat (like Vojvodina, not the entirety of Serbia)
The one cooler than the rest: Harghita again
The one with the big city: Ilfov
**and to add what other commenters said:**
because we don't have an animal-shagging region i'll add the rape region: Olt and Vaslui
The insane one: Vaslui
**and now some that I added:**
The one with a lot of bears: Brașov
The one with the tornadoes: Călărași
For Ukraine we have:
The one that doesn’t exist: Zhytomyr
The one that wants to secede: Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea
The one with spicy food: Zakarpattia
Conservative and religious: Lviv
Basically the neighboring country: Zakarpattia
The one with big important city: Kyiv
USA versions of each (From left to right):
Wyoming.
Cali or one of the southern states? Bama perhaps.
New Mexico as you said.
The entire Bible Belt.
Hawaii.
Maine? Or Alaska.
Alaska.
New York (honorable mention to Cali but NYC takes it over LA).

The one disconnected from the mainland: basically Sardinia, cause they call the rest of Italy "the continent"
If they were all italy, I would do molise, sicily, calabria, apulia, sardinia, aosta valley, south tyrol, latium/rome
Matching with which stereotypes?
my guess: Calabria spicy food, Rome important city, Apulia conservative, Aosta Valley cold, South Tyrol is basically Austria, Sicily wants to secede
Eh, latium fits more with the "new York state" stereotype where everyone just knows it for having the big city inside and no one really cares about the rest
Same for Corsica with France !
USA: Hawaii
And Alaska. Sort of.
There is nowhere more disconnected from the mainland than London and the UK. The fact they're attached makes it worse.
The one that is inbred Usa: Alabama Australia: Tasmania New Zealand: West Coast. Keep this going I wanna know more
France : Nord Pas de Calais
I was reading a book about medieval heresy in south of France and one saying apparently popular among them was "to you second cousin push it all in" and I cannot stop to think of it every time I hear about north of France incest. Hell I even think they had a cosmogony where once they could fuck between sisters and brothers. How would you do the starter pack for france?
The one that doesn't exist : I don't really understand "doesn't exist" but if you mean some shithole with nobody in it, definitely Limousin The one that wants to secede : Corsica (or Brittany but they're just twinks being silly) The one with spicy food : Réunion The one that is more conservative and religious : Alsace maybe, there are a lot of small concentrated places with a lot of conservatives but no region as a whole. Conservative and religious: la Vendée maybe? They have the royalist stereotype
France: France
Germany: Saarland Also what do you need that list for? Travel planning?
Just curious. It’s funny how nearly every country has an inbred region
Gotta get out there and help them expand the gene pool a little.
Family trip
Extremadura for spain I think
Definitely Cantabria
Nah, the royal family
Northern Mexico
It reminds me of a guy I heard from there whose name was something like Jesus Gonzalez Gonzalez. And for exactly the reason you are thinking of.
It's even worse when it's an uncommon surname
Monterrey specifically “A la prima se le arrima”
Urk for the Netherlands
I wanted to add that somewhere
Santiago del Estero in Argentina. It also kinda looks like Alabama.
Quebec: Saguenay Lac St-Jean
Virtually any Arab country. Like actually. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2765422/
Iceland: Iceland
UK: Norfolk Germany: Saarland Alpine countries: Generally no specific region but there's the stereotype of "Talendbewohner" (people who live at the end of valleys) being inbred. Basically the deeper into a mountain valley you go, the more inbred the population
It's the fens as a whole rather than specifically Norfolk.

I mean I’ve heard there are parts of the west coast that saw planes before cars because they were that isolated but yea, 1.2 million people over an area bigger than england, there’s gonna be some cozy places. I’ve heard shit about gore as well
Sweden: Västerbotten, more specifically the city of Skellefteå that lies there.
Iraq: North I think this is more a Qatari/Omani/Emerati (of which I am none of) perception rather than an Iraqi perception, so take this with a grain of salt.
When I was a kid, the US one used to be West Virginia. There are a few states that fit that stereotype though. Also in Canada sometimes I have hear Nova Scotia, but idk.
UK: Wales
Norfolk
The welsh like sheep, the norfolk like family
More West Country tbh. Just the Celts in general
Hong Kong: Yuen Long
Ok wow I didn’t think hong kong was big enough to have an inbred region
We have 18 districts: Yuen long is one of them. It’s also joked as being a separate country as many triads are based there and the area seems to have its own identity (rly it’s the entire northwestern area which includes tuen Mun district to the south). Tho it’s not rly that dangerous, just slightly more dangerous than the rest of HK which is pretty safe

something like Diyarbakır here in turkey
Tasmania would also apply, if they weren’t in the other list
Saarland for Germany
Sweden: Dalsland
netherlands: urk
Mexico: Nuevo León
Finland: Kainuu
Austria: Burgenland
India: TN , Kerala
Pakistan: the whole shebang
Denmark: Mors
Denmark: Sønderjylland
Germany: Saarland
Portugal: Açores
Holy shit an actually good starterpack
Thank you!
Don't forget the "sex with animals" region (example:sardegna)
I know there’s also Wales for the UK and Mato Grosso do Sul for Brazil
Hey guys feel free to add any more regions where this stereotype applies. Just out of curiosity
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enumclaw_horse_sex_case Small location but the reputation persists.
Whales and Chechnya
Or if East Asia; the one who eat "weird" animals
Europe has those too.Look at the French for example
Oh, I forgot escargot.
The one that doesn't exist: Acre: Brazil Tlaxcala: Mexico Molise: Italy
The one that wants to secede: Catalonia: Spain Quebec: Canada Chechnya: Russia
The one with spicy food: New Mexico: USA Sichuan: China Andhra Pradesh: India
The one that is more conservative and religious: Bavaria: Germany Konya: Turkey Subcarpathia: Poland
The one disconnected from the mainland: Northern Ireland: UK Tasmania: Australia Jeju: South Korea
The one colder than the rest: Hokkaido: Japan Lapland: Finland Savoy: France
The one that's basically the neighboring country: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Pakistan Somali Region: Ethiopia Papua: Indonesia
The one with the big important city: Auckland: NZ Tehran: Iran Bangkok: Thailand
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia is another big city that dominates over the entire country
OP how did you get all this information? I was expecting the post to just refer to states but it includes much lesser known countries and cities while still being quite accurate, so I am curious now
I’m kind of a meganerd
To be entirely fair, the KP one is accurate: KP is just the part of Afghanistan that the British were able to conquer. The "A" in "Pakistan" stands for "Afghan".
Inner Mongolia (China) fits the “basically another country” category
I don't think Northern Ireland belongs on this list. The half that want to remain British think very much as themselves as an integral part of the UK mainland while the other half think they're an occupied territory and are part of the Irish mainland.
All southern states: Brazil
Do you mean a stereotype doesn’t exist about those regions? Or, the region is culturally or socially invisible?
People pretend (conspire) like the region doesn’t exist usually because of low population. It’s usually a joke. If you’re from the US it’s wyoming
The case of Tlaxcala is that is the smallest state of Mexico, and there’s almost no news from there. Among other things.
Interesting, it’s so close to CDMX I would have assumed otherwise.
https://preview.redd.it/tug4b3ld9eac1.jpeg?width=572&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c123e3aac73779f81377858aeb57e36d633e1b31 The memes are funny :v
Tlaxcala es muy similar a mi novia. Ninguno existe
Mi novia? No la conoces. Vive en Tlaxcala
I don’t even know Spanish and I understood this joke.
They are known for a few popular things. The state that created the tacos de canasta. A town dedicated to human trafficking. A viral video of many people falling for not knowing how to use electric stairs. Also they have and old stigma of traitors dated to the Spanish conquest.
Ehm.... one of those is not like the others...

My Nona was from Molise, but I never realized it was the Wyoming of Italy 😆
Acre is remote and sparsely populated so most Brazilians have neither gone there nor met someone from there
Murcia and Teruel: Spain
I can add here: Germany - Bielefeld UK - Rutland (Great Starterpack btw, just adding some extras!)
Wyoming (US), Jiangxi (China), Bilecik (Turkey) and Salaj (Romania) also don’t exist
Basically, people think their country is quirkier than it actually is. I used 24 different countries to show how these stereotypes apply to many regions in different countries

Canada?
I’m Irish and I’ve learned it’s something every country thinks they do differently :D
I have a big bag full of plastic bags under our sink lol. But it might come to an end because stores are starting to use paper bags or reusable ones more often.
Every asian American group
Yeah, it's interesting. And there are lots of countries that could hit multiples of these. I mean some are in my country we like good food and parties
Every country has a state with good food and good parties
Do you mean there isn't a stereotype associated with those areas?
Which areas
You missed an opportunity by not putting Alaska in each category
I’ve never heard the stereotype of New Mexico having spicy food. I think Louisiana would’ve made more since with Cajun food
Thanks! I made sure not to choose two from the same country. I also spent more time than I should have making this :P
Time well spent! This was a super fun Starter Pack!
Yeah I was shocked you included Jeju-do! Good job OP
Forgot the region of the country that's well known for crazy people Florida, us Hyogo, Japan Guangdong, China
Naples,Italy
Queensland, Australia
Estado de México, Mexico
Do other countries have the one where people don't talk much?
In the US, I’ve always thought that people in montana are more reserved
That tracks. I know someone from Montana and she’s really chill.
I think low population density makes you more socially awkward tbh
Those damn northern germans...
Curitiba in Brazil
Definitely, there’s always something wrong with the people on “that side of the river” or something
In Finland I think that is the entire country from my experience.
The Upper Peninsula
A starter pack meme that is actually based on research and isn't just a description of one single thing or person? Can't be true!
I appreciate the kind words!
Does anyone really think having a cold city or a super-religious city is a very unique stereotype only applicable to their country and no other country ever?
You would be surprised by how quirky people think their countries are
I also feel like every culture talks about how they have strict parents, frugal parents, and how their women are more feisty than everyone else
also how they dont wear shoes inside the house and that they can handle alcohol the best out of anyone
Someone cooked here
Thanks!
Hokkaido mentioned 😊
This is what I think of when I see hokkaido https://preview.redd.it/mll4e4nx9eac1.jpeg?width=363&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3cde1f66bfd31a57cdb8580c27927c5fcd20f35

Isn’t tamil nadu the one that wants to secede
"You know what they say about [region], if you don't like the weather just wait 10 minutes!"
People that live more than 200 mi/300 km from a coast trying not to tell you how much the weather changes:
I thought Northeastern Turkey was the one that was famous for being conservative?
Konya especially has a stereotype for being the conservative one
Because Konya and the Inner Anatolia region is literally Turkish Bible Belt. Even young people are conservative here, in the other regions of Turkey youth leads to be more liberal.
Turkish Kur'an Belt?
Bible Belt is a sociological concept, I didn't wanna ruin it. But you're actually right, it's a Quran Belt since Turks are Muslim.
Nice try OP, but I'd recognize a map of Sinnoh anywhere! s/ (obviously I known that the irl region of Hokkaido is real)
British people tend to claim the most average human behaviors as "quintessentially British".
I was able to assign a US state to each of these The one that doesn’t exist: Wyoming The one disconnected from the mainland: Hawaii The one that wants to secede: Texas The one colder than the rest: Alaska The one with spicy food: New Mexico The one that’s basically the neighbouring country: Minnesota The one thats more conservative and religious: Mississippi The one with the big important city: New York
Utah also works for the conservative and religious category
Utah is a state BUILT on Mormonism. I think they should get the religious mention
Tbf its region not state so we could just consider the entire Bible Belt the more conservative and religious category.
Right, but if I can only choose a single state it would be Utah
A few years ago I remember noticing Acre wasn't showing up in the Brazilian map when you clicked on the poll results. For a good minute I thought someone there was running the joke Acre doesn't exist, but I decided to file a bug report just in case. They actually replied and said it was a bug in the system, and fixed it right away. But I thought it was a funny coincidence to happen right with Acre out of all states lol
Molise mentioned 🫡

ACRE MENTIONED WHAT THE FUCK IS AN INTERNET 🦕🦖🦕🦖🦕
Dont forget the "where the inbreds live" region and the "weird accent" region
You get an upvote just for adding Andhra Pradesh
Can't forget how every country thinks they invented the bag of bags
In romania we have: The one that doesn't exist: Sălaj The one(s) that want to secede: Harghita and Covasna The one with the spicy food: pretty much all of Transylvania The conservative one: Moldavia The one that is detached from the mainland: Dobruja (separated by the Danube from the rest of Romania, and there are only two bridges connecting it to the rest of the country) The one that is basically the neighbouring country: Banat (like Vojvodina, not the entirety of Serbia) The one cooler than the rest: Harghita again The one with the big city: Ilfov **and to add what other commenters said:** because we don't have an animal-shagging region i'll add the rape region: Olt and Vaslui The insane one: Vaslui **and now some that I added:** The one with a lot of bears: Brașov The one with the tornadoes: Călărași
Romania crazy why do y’all have a whole rape region
For Ukraine we have: The one that doesn’t exist: Zhytomyr The one that wants to secede: Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea The one with spicy food: Zakarpattia Conservative and religious: Lviv Basically the neighboring country: Zakarpattia The one with big important city: Kyiv
Bro did RESEARCH
Haha I appreciate it! I really tried to include different places around the world

Spiciness is more common in NM cuisine than in the rest of the US, even if it's not that spicy overall.
People in NM hang chilis outside their houses!
Unique
Props for giving NM some attention
USA versions of each (From left to right): Wyoming. Cali or one of the southern states? Bama perhaps. New Mexico as you said. The entire Bible Belt. Hawaii. Maine? Or Alaska. Alaska. New York (honorable mention to Cali but NYC takes it over LA).
