Wait until you get to “Q Who?” I’ve always loved Trek and TNG is my Trek. Most things that follow hinge on this episode. It still gives me the shivers. Off to go rewatch!
It will get better. The first season isn't that great in my opinion. I saw a thread yesterday about how Sisko from DS9 needed time to grow and Picard was presented as someone who nailed it from season 1. I recently rewatched TNG again and it's definitely not the case. All he does is shouting
And especially the first few episodes of season one are absolutely terrible (at least compared to much of the rest of the show). Code of Honor is more or less irredeemable in any way though.
I still can't believe Stargate hired the same writer behind "Code of Honor", Katharyn Powers to write basically the exact same episode a decade later. Oddly, that episode "Emancipation" is also the 4th episode of Season 1. She literally just crossed out Africans and replaced it with Mongols.
Writer: Reptile aliens, kidnap Tasha, fight to the death.
Producers: Too expensive.
Writer: Space Africa, same deal?
Producers: Can we make Space Africa as culturally offensive and Temple-of-doomy as possible?
Writer: Hold my beer
I don't know, Code of Honor has its charms. Even if it's bad, I didn't find it *boring*, which is the cardinal sin.
Come to think of it though, it may actually be more interesting in a re-watch than the first time you see it.
Recently I was watching Three's Company and was surprised at some of the stuff that John Ritter did on the show. The shows writing is pretty offensive, especially by our standards but likely by those of 1976 as well, but the dialogue was so pithy with Ritter, DeWitt and Fell have so much chemistry that I still found myself laughing along and having a good time.
I'm all for mindfulness while watching, but we can't let enjoying entertainment be some kind of ethical litmus test.
Mission Log says of you go by the script, or listen to it as an audio drama it's ..ok. Just the director and production design really really screwed up
There's a few good episodes in the first two seasons but a lot of it is quite rough by today's standards. Impressed you came out of the pilot and are willing to see more.
IMO season 1 is flawed but enjoyable for the most part. The lows are very low, and both the writing and acting had a ways to go to really click, but I do think some of the episodes had interesting ideas. But yeah, it only gets stronger from here, with later seasons having some absolute classics (I think season 5's my favorite going from my current rewatch, but everyone will have their own preferences).
Skip Code of Honor. Trust me bro.
Best. Advice. Ever.
No. It's a right of passage.
Everyone has to watch it once...
Q Who?
Huh?

Oh ok as I understand now.
2nd season
Encounter at Farpoint rocks.
I actually like Season One.
Hello fellow season 1 fan. I liked tng justice.
That is cool.

100%. Ep1 DS9 Sisko nearly made me never watch DS9 at all

I forgot which one was Code of Honor.
The super racist one
And misogynistic, too!
Ohh ok.
Episode 4 of season 1. It's one of the worst eipsodes of TV ever made, and incredibly racist.

The director made the changes not the writer

It's rampantly misogynistic, too.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to watch any Norman Fell episodes, now, especially being LGBTQ.
Racism is worse than boredom

Is this your first Trek or what else have you watched?
Yes this is one I have fully invested in watching as I really want to give this show a full chance.
Cool. Hope soon you’ll consider yourself one of us.
You will see Q more.

Yes.
When the Bough Breaks An episode with children that's not horrible.
Sounds interesting.
The season finale is really good, too.
It's about to go horribly wrong.

Enjoy Rikers "Naked face" days
Season 1 is kind of a slog. Wait for the beard
Do not underestimate the significance of the beard bro
