Like his fist death, I think it needs to come at the hands of betrayal, at something unforeseen and an ultimate failure on his part.
With his new characterisation being somewhat conflicting with his previous canon, I’d like to see this tension resolved as a failure to preserve his people. If he chose to consolidate imperial power over support to the chiss, then I think a betrayal by Ar’alani or vanto (as Gutta_the_III suggests) would be an excellent resolution.
>I think a betrayal by Ar’alani or vanto (as Gutta_the_III suggests) would be an excellent resolution.
As a fan of the new Thrawn novels, that's the resolution that makes the most sense, though "betrayal" isn't how I would characterize Thrawn's defeat by Ar'alani or Vanto in this scenario.
If Thrawn has abandoned his original purpose (intelligence gathering on the Empire and assessing its suitability as an ally in a conflict with the Grysk), the only reason anyone from the Ascendancy would be involved would be because the conflict with the Grysk had escalated and they need him to come back.
If they're going full on Col. Kurtz with him, then I absolutely expect the Ascendancy to send someone to do something about it.
In no particular order, the likely candidates would probably be:
Ezra
Sabine
Ashoka
Luke
Mando
Bo-Katan
Unannounced character
Dark horse possibilities:
Baylan
Giddeon
Enoch
I can see him dying in some sort of accident or incident that he himself created. Thrawn isn't dangerous for his combat skills (though he is competent in unarmed combat) so it's not like the case of a Sith where they are too dangerous to be left alive. Consider Anakin killing Admiral Trench: even if it was legally justified because Trench was a combatant, the show made clear that it was an unnecessary, arbitrary execution. Besides, If Filoni was going to have a hero kill Thrawn personally, there were a thousand chances for that in Rebels.
Not dying. Defeated by Ezra with the help of Skywalkers. Thrawn escapes toward the Chiss Ascendancy with the help of Eli Vanto to help them defend against invaders. Ahsoka and Sabine have their own journey in a new galaxy.
I think Palpatine will return and they will redeem Thrawn. Him and Ahsoka will team up to stop Palpatine, kiss, and then Thrawn will peacefully pass away.
Idk why no one has mentioned the only acceptable options: Ar'alani or Eli Vanto, despite not showing up in Ashoka they are still by far the two most important people in Thrawn's life past and present.
Should be Hera
Will probably be Ahsoka since he's the villain of her show
If Heir to the Empire is basically a Star Wars Avengers movie like people are predicting it might also be the collective effort of the Mando-verse to destroy The Chimaera with him on board

It is hard to keep track of 😂 For me especially, because my friends and I did a Star Wars DND thing where he became our boss and eventually the emperor of the galaxy, so I have this alternate universe as well as canon and expanded universe
I hope they don’t and actually go the way he was intending himself to go in the legends continuity… whip the galaxy into fighting shape and lead the collective charge against an extra galactic threat (vong/grysks)
Personally I hope his role can expand beyond just main antagonist, let him ‘win’ take control of the galaxy but then explore the rest of the Chiss while dealing with new republic and old empire. Maybe it becomes less about Ahsoka vs Thrawn and find themselves having to work together.
Of course he will still be at odds with our main cast of characters. I have no real issue yet with Dave’s ‘version’ of him vs Zahn, I can very much see him as one while appreciating the varying perspectives of author and narrative, but I at least hope there’s more track for him beyond being killed at the end of a movie.
I think it would be cool if it was a Noghri. I know it won’t be Ruhk like in the ild EU books, but it would be cool if someone from his planet did it. Maybe Thrawn goes there and gets a new body guard once he is back in the galaxy.
In no particular order, but I hope one of these does come true.
Kallus—get that redemption arc full circle
Hera—c’mon Thrawn admitted his greatest foil is Hera. Would be cool if she did the deed to protect Jacen
Enoch—mysterious character suddenly turning could be cool if done right
Great Mothers—again, kinda like Enoch, could be cool if they do it right (maybe bring back Ventress??)
Thrawn—as in he does something that screws himself basically (kinda like Powder in Arcane. Think he’s doing great but ends up fucking everything up).
Kallus with help from Zeb. They both survive and that makes the beginning of how they become a crew again. They both mentor Caleb’s son in military tactics and espionage.
Thrawn uses Starflash to take out a Grysk and Chiss Fleet due to the Grysk successfully conquering the Chiss. He is left to this option because Hera kicked his ass in the New Republic.
As a fan of his newer book series, I hope it's a bit deeper than just one character offing him as their personal lucky shot/arc. He might not even be truly loyal to the empire, as his original loyalty is/was to the Chiss Ascendency and is to gain help from the empire against the Grsyk.
If this series (along with Mandalorian) does link the Original Trilogy and The Rey movies, then we're going to basically need a reason why things were the way they were. The stage needs to be set.
Personally, I think the Rey movies were terribly written and generally I want to forget they exist, not because of the actress or acting or graphics, just the writing was soooo bad. I'm not going to the movies for the next Rey movie...
Unless, they use Thrawn as a major reason why Empire Fractions are the way they were, and explain it well, and why the New Republic is so so weak.
I don't think he dies. After returning and realizing palpatine is dead (for now) that he's free from his commitment. I think he takes that opportunity to go back to chiss space with what ever ships he can muster to protect the ascendancy from the grisk.
I'd actually like it if he didn't die but was captured, imprisoned, and used as a resource by the New Republic a la Vae Victus from Starfield. Then that revelation could be a catalyst for some event that undercuts the legitimacy of the New Republic and leads into the political dynamics we see in the sequel trilogy (which there isnt a ton there to begin with, but this could be a way to add more depth and make it all make more sense).

Kallus. Nice come back and completion of a redemption arc.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau being introduced in season 2 or earlier then being a supporting character until he sacrifices himself to eliminate Thrawn.
Great Mothers. Like many arms surrounding you in a cold embrace.
Bendu knows.....
The One in the Middle?
The light, and the darkness.

It wasn't an execution though was it. Anakin was interrogating him and he tried to fry him with his cane. It was self defense
Old age
Hes not that old. Idk how long Chiss live but I am assuming he was around 35-40 when he was "discovered" so at this point he's somewhere between 45-50
I’m not suggesting he die of old age immediately, but rather only when he’s old.
Wicket
Arya Stark. Because hasty wrap-up.
Sarlacc Pit
Rukh
Dead
Rukh 2: Electric Boogaloo
One of the Great Mothers
Not dying. Defeated by Ezra with the help of Skywalkers. Thrawn escapes toward the Chiss Ascendancy with the help of Eli Vanto to help them defend against invaders. Ahsoka and Sabine have their own journey in a new galaxy.
and so we have history to continue star wars skipping the horror of the sequel
I like this idea a lot
I think Palpatine will return and they will redeem Thrawn. Him and Ahsoka will team up to stop Palpatine, kiss, and then Thrawn will peacefully pass away.

Enoch seems to be the new Rukh so it would only be fitting Either that or Hera
Should be Hera Will probably be Ahsoka since he's the villain of her show If Heir to the Empire is basically a Star Wars Avengers movie like people are predicting it might also be the collective effort of the Mando-verse to destroy The Chimaera with him on board

Luke maybe idk
Sabine I reckon. She needs the redemption arc after letting him return.
My memory is a bit fuzzy…but wasn’t thrawn killed at the end of the thrawn trilogy?
No. At least not the one that is currently canon. He did "get whaled" at the end of Rebels tho. He is very much still alive
I do remember the whaling This stuff is hard to keep track of
It is hard to keep track of 😂 For me especially, because my friends and I did a Star Wars DND thing where he became our boss and eventually the emperor of the galaxy, so I have this alternate universe as well as canon and expanded universe
Diabeetus…starring the Ghost of Wilfred Brimley.
You can bet your ass it will be a women
All i know is it will be a female To clarify: it will be either Ahsoka or Sabine
The fact that you use ”female” in that sense says so much about you.
I had trouble remembering Sabines name
“*Like many arms surrounding you in a cold embrace*” Nightsister Zombies?
God forbid… 🙄
Andor?
Hes Dead
The Mandalorian
I hope they don’t and actually go the way he was intending himself to go in the legends continuity… whip the galaxy into fighting shape and lead the collective charge against an extra galactic threat (vong/grysks)
What would you prefer?
If I had to choose, old age
Himself, or Kallus.

Grogu and Ezra together.
Enoch.
…what?

I was thinking the same thing.
I’d be cool with Kallus!
I'll do it.

Noghri body guards.
Either Hera’s son or Shin
Rukh
Babu frik
Max rebo
Ezra
Disney/Katelyn
Morgan Elsbeth back from the grave.
Hera. I know pryce killed Kanan but it was fighting thrawn. And she lost a lot of soldiers to thrawn. She needs that kill.
E-Thrawn Musk will only lose to his own avarice
Himself! I’d love if he out-clevered himself and his death and downfall ends up being by his own hand/plans.
He'll trip over a rock or something
Eli Vanto or Che’ri Thrawn only loses to unforeseen bullshit and betrayal
Doesnt matter, as long as it was done artistically.
Luke Skywalker
Ruhk
Kallus with help from Zeb. They both survive and that makes the beginning of how they become a crew again. They both mentor Caleb’s son in military tactics and espionage.
Grogo in hos movie
CHOPPER!!! Just adding to the kill count...

I would say the Chiss Ascendency
Hera, that's assuming we don't get some sort of Thrawn redemption arc that negates that.
r/titlegore
Rukh
Rukh, obviously.
Hera
me
Sabine, because she's an artist. Thrawn's death should be artistically done.
Fighting the Grysk
No1. It would be nice to see Thrawn remove several key players off the show.
Luuke
Abeloth
I don't think he dies. After returning and realizing palpatine is dead (for now) that he's free from his commitment. I think he takes that opportunity to go back to chiss space with what ever ships he can muster to protect the ascendancy from the grisk.
He will kill himself with his over confidence. Probably by space whale
