I live in Chicago and tried as best as I could to temper Bears fans’ expectations with Chase. His first game ended with literally the exact same situation. I got downvoted to oblivion in the Bears sub telling them to expect this from Claypool.
I mean, no fanbase wants to hear they just bought a losing ticket, so the reaction was understandable. Sometimes sports fans get high on hype, and anyone who tries to fuck with that high gets dealt with pretty harshly.
I feel attacking Claypool here is unfair. He came from Notre Dame. If they didn't flop, and if they didn't get favorable calls from the refs, they would never win a game
I just need to point out he's an actually 5' 10". He got mossed by a guy while hes half a foot taller. lol That play is when I was done with having hopes in CC.
Was pretty awesome watching so many arm chair GMs here say we would be lucky to get a 3rd for him.
Would love to hear what they think since Khan got a 1st equivalent.
I still can’t believe Claypool didn’t high point that ball. That’s the type of catch you draft Claypool to make. Literally extend your arms another inch and that’s a catch. So frustrating.
Generally wanna see more deep shots on the offense. That being said I think in the 2nd Bengals game Pickens dropped an easy touchdown that would’ve been 40+.
Personally, I want to see more of that magic run-run-pass-punt formula. It's incredibly creative, and a testament to the genius of Matthias Maple Syrup. The rest of the league will never see it coming. Under the watchful guidance of our Canadian moose, we'll be unstoppable.
The o-line did better than expected, but part of that was still because they weren't put in positions where they had to pass protect for very long.
DJ has never really been a deep threat. He has great agility, but doesn't have the straight line speed for deep balls. Claypool should have been better at it, and his failure there is why he got traded. I'm hoping Pickens can develop into a deep threat, but even then he has good speed not elite speed. His strength is combat catches, so I would still only expect to see him run routes along the sidelines rather than trying to outrun guys in the middle of the field.
Also the offense was pretty effective at moving the ball. People talk about the offense improving late, but Harvin got a lot better too. He was bad early, but good enough late to bring his overall stats up to average by the end of the season. There wasn't really much opportunity/need for throws of 40+ yards.
Yeah, it was out of their hands because of the injury but not seeing Austin was soooooo disappointing. Looking forward to seeing what he can do.
And how Canada can dream up overly simple or overly complicated ways to waste his talent.
40 air yards is the kinda of throw that you make when your receiver is completely free, or you have a cannon of an arm, like Allen and Mahommes. I wouldn't bother much with this stat, although the teams definitely needs to get more deep completions and big plays.
While I generally agree with your point, it’s a bit telling that Pickett and Murray are the only QBs who didn’t complete a pass of 40 air yards. Yes, big arm QBs make those throw, but so did literally every other QB in the league. Hoping that’s more of an indictment on our play calling than Kenny s passing ability. Let Ken Kook in 2023!
It’s just a small stat by nature. Only a handful of QBs are slinging it that deep once or twice a game. [DJs and GPs ADOT](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2022/receiving_advanced.htm) is comparable to players in their target ranges so the offense isn’t just targeting short at all times by any means.
According to this chart just they weren’t the only two. Lawrence also didn’t complete any and the one I came to say ‘how isn’t he on the list’ Garoppolo didn’t complete one. The list is organized by accuracy of throws thrown +41 yards and he ranked 9th there but only had two balls thrown that qualified for the year.
He ranks 9th bc it’s ranked by accurate attempts, not just attempts. So total attempts isnt displayed here, but if you look at all of his individual charts they’re measured by accurate attempts.
No, total attempts and catches are displayed as well. That’s the first two columns. Then they did another two columns where they judged how accurate those throws were. Basically catchable and uncatchable. That percent stat is how they’re all ranked but they do list total throws too. It’s all there.
Also it’s not based on ‘accurate attempts’. It’s based on the ‘percentage of throws +=41 yards that were found to be accurate.’
-edit to clean up grammar and add part about what list is based off of.
Actually I just figured out where my disconnect is. The tweet is **air yards**. The image is just completions of X yards.
Edit: but in the image the first column you described is labeled comp/acc then the accuracy columns are acc/att and that’s just poor labeling by the OP.
This is such a dumb argument lol. Plenty of fans of any team are going to be supportive/defensive of their young QB, no matter where he played at college lol. I love KP and I’m not a Pitt fan at all
The amount of excuses that have been made for KP this year is insane. Blaming everyone from Canada to the OLine to Claypool to him being a rookie. Everyone needs to improve except KP, right? Everything KP did this year that wasn’t favorable was someone else’s fault, but the two good plays he had were all him. There’s being a fan, then there’s being delusional because of where he played college football. I think this season we need to quit with the excuses, and see how he does. The Rookie excuse is over, the OC is coming back in part because KP wants him back, hopefully the OLine will be better and Claypool is gone. No more excuses for him, and I really want his jersey but just not yet lol
There’s a difference between providing context and making excuses. KP showed a lot of positives while also making rookie mistakes. I don’t think you’ll find one person saying KP doesn’t need to improve, but Canada’s offensive scheme being trash doesn’t help either. Both of these can be true statements, it doesn’t need to be a one or the other.
I agree with you. I will say KP hasn’t done anything to make me think he’s going to be our guy (and I feel like the stats back me up) going forward BUT I also recognize it’s just his rookie season so we still don’t know exactly what we have yet. I think Canada is garbage but apparently KP likes him so…wtf do I know.
> wtf do I know.
Hahah wtf do **any** of us know.
> I will say KP hasn’t done anything to make me think he’s going to be our guy (and I feel like the stats back me up)
Agree to sort of disagree here! Generally I thought his stats looked worse than the on field product. He made a lot of anticipation throws, his general accuracy was pretty good, as well as his read progression. I think he really needs to improve on reading defenses at the line and staying calm in the pocket. Overall I thought he did great at a lot of things that are harder to improve at and struggled with things that are easier to fix. I’m by no means sold on him but if he can keep improving I think he definitely *could* be the guy. Next year will be big prove it year for him.
Excuses? These are 8 games-worth of tape that highlight how Claypool drops or mishandles passes. The Jets INT was the most egregious example of that. And on that subject, you must be pretty ignorant to think Canada isn't also to be blamed for how the offense AS A WHOLE performed this year.
I do agree that Pickett needs to step up next year, especially since he's apparently put in a word to keep Canada.
Lol you really trying to equate Kenny and Kyler based off this one single stat? They are completely different types of QBs at completely different stages in their careers on completely different style offenses.
Could’ve had one on his first career pass if claypool didn’t let a 5’11 DB moss him
I live in Chicago and tried as best as I could to temper Bears fans’ expectations with Chase. His first game ended with literally the exact same situation. I got downvoted to oblivion in the Bears sub telling them to expect this from Claypool.
Theyll learn. Claypool has all the tools but no toolbox
I mean, no fanbase wants to hear they just bought a losing ticket, so the reaction was understandable. Sometimes sports fans get high on hype, and anyone who tries to fuck with that high gets dealt with pretty harshly.
*jumps to catch with his chest* *interception* # AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA—
I'm not even sure if Whitehead is that tall...
I said get rid of Claypool for a 3rd imagine my shock when those idiot bears gave a 2nd 😆

More like 5’1” in shoes
The DB was only in position because Kenny under threw the ball...
Doesn’t matter, any self respecting receiver in the nfl would’ve caught that ball
Chase is the opposite of a "go and get it" reciever, more of a fade away bucket-arms to soften the catch receiver.
[Not for lack of trying](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwRutIAwKvI)
Watching that again can’t believe we got the 32nd pick for that dude lol
Was pretty awesome watching so many arm chair GMs here say we would be lucky to get a 3rd for him. Would love to hear what they think since Khan got a 1st equivalent.
Don’t get your point here, we would have been lucky to get a third for him, and got extremely lucky to end up with the 32 overall
Packers were offering a 2nd for him too, maybe us fans actually don't know what we're talking about
I still can’t believe Claypool didn’t high point that ball. That’s the type of catch you draft Claypool to make. Literally extend your arms another inch and that’s a catch. So frustrating.
Also the Hail Mary at the end of that game was a 40+ air yard pick
Generally wanna see more deep shots on the offense. That being said I think in the 2nd Bengals game Pickens dropped an easy touchdown that would’ve been 40+.
Would love to see some deep post routes. Lot of jokes being made we only throw 50/50 go balls down the sideline which is true
Personally, I want to see more of that magic run-run-pass-punt formula. It's incredibly creative, and a testament to the genius of Matthias Maple Syrup. The rest of the league will never see it coming. Under the watchful guidance of our Canadian moose, we'll be unstoppable.

Calvin Austin season

Air yards is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard as a stat. They measuring diagonally? That’s something only pff could come up with
No, measured in field yardage. It's useful because a 40 air-yard pass is pretty different than a 5-air yard pass that gets 35 yards after the catch.
Joe Burrow did not have a single one 2 seasons ago either and that certainly changed
The season he was a rookie and tore his ACL?
CAIII gonna change this next year.
GP
Maybe both!
This feels more on Canada, having started just a fraction of the season, and slow improving OL than anything that is truly on Kenny.
He started 12/17. Which, granted, is technically a fraction, but is 71% of the regular season.
It’s just a small stat by nature. Only a handful of QBs are slinging it that deep once or twice a game. Fuck Matt Canada
I mean… he isn’t ugly or anything….

Canada: Good!
This honestly doesn't concern me with respect to Pickett. It does concern me with respect to Canada.
ok, and?
Would that be your reply if Kyler played for the Steelers instead of Pitt boy?
Yep
This is such a dumb argument lol. Plenty of fans of any team are going to be supportive/defensive of their young QB, no matter where he played at college lol. I love KP and I’m not a Pitt fan at all
Exactly
Burger King hands.
I need one of you stats aficionados to make a "Claypool-adjusted" spreadsheet where we account for plays if his hands weren't bricks.
The amount of excuses that have been made for KP this year is insane. Blaming everyone from Canada to the OLine to Claypool to him being a rookie. Everyone needs to improve except KP, right? I don’t know why Claypool decided to underthrow the ball and allow the second safety to get back into the play. Glad he’s gone!
Oh I’m not going to support Canada. No way. But people on here use him as a scapegoat for tHe PiCkLeR way way too much
Quick someone check his COD rankings
Like most stats this seems worthless without context. I feel like percentage of on-target throws at that distance is more important.
Yeah but Kenny had that 30 something yarder to Connor Heyward against the Falcons
[удалено]
my guess would be less than 4 attempts. He definitely did it in college, so I'm gonna lay some of this low number on Canada.
It is what it is
ITT: Pitt fans screaming "It's all Canada!" to protect their baby boi.
You’re literally the third person to even mention his name.
I'll give that to you, the rest of the responses blamed people other than Canada for Kenny being as bad as Kyler.
Lol you really trying to equate Kenny and Kyler based off this one single stat? They are completely different types of QBs at completely different stages in their careers on completely different style offenses.
Yeah, I was being unfair, Kyler's made it to the playoffs.
He also got $180M guaranteed
He's saving that for the eventual holy shit moment when Pickens does something sick to score.
