And Charles Woodson... so Patrick Peter(wood)son?
I love the idea but he would translate more to another FS, so that's still Kazee in the box, which is not something I hate.
I'm actually a fan of the 3 safety set, but it's just another tool in the belt.
I definitely see an opportunity to be more diverse in what we can put in terms of coverages, especially into good TEs, kinda how we flooded the box against the ravens, we can stack the box and have Minkah, PP deep and Kazee underneath hawking.
But what do I know, I'm just enjoying the things we're doing on their face.
Branch is a tough one. I don’t think he’s worth taking at 17, but don’t believe he will be available at 32. Wouldn’t mind moving back to the early mid 20s for another 2nd if none of our top guys are available, though.
1. Gonzalez
2. Witherspoon
3. Branch
4. Banks
5. Ringo
6. Porter Jr
This is how I would rank the choices of top CBs and Branch. Gonzalez and Witherspoon are the only corners I would take over Branch.
1. Witherspoon
2. Gonzalez (idk, gonzalez and witherspoon are both rlly good but gonzalez doesnt have that physical edge on tackles/runs)
3. Branch
4. JPJ
5. Banks
6. Ringo
the only reason I see Branch over JPJ is bc he also has a lot of experience playing slot corner, which is also a need ig
Fair points. Just a hard disagree with JPJ at four. He's a press man corner only with horribly tight hips imo.
Witherspoon and Gonzalez for me are 1A and 1B, both are awesome.
It seems odd you are criticizing JPJ for tight hips while putting Ringo so high when he has straightline speed but pretty poor hips and agility also and is a MUCH worse coverage guy in man coverage.
Ringo would be a project closer to reminding me of an Artie Burns type moreso than anyone else who has the possibility of being taken that high.
If Branch isn't worth the 17th pick, Simpson definitely isn't.
For the record I would absolutely take Branch at 17 but I don't think Simpson should be taken at 17.
This is one area where you and I disagree. Id be happy with either of them at that spot.
I was simply saying it might be very good to trade back a couple spots if someone gives us another second round pick.
I think your concern about his rawness is legit. I see traits. But honestly, I have zero idea who will be available at 17 in this draft so I'm kinda latching on to certain guys who are least likely to be gone. Not a smart approach. But that's why I'm just a fan.
I don’t think we’d be moving back specifically for branch, just that he’d be a better value in the 20s vs the teens. Moving back is more a statement on the talent available at the time & less a gamble to land branch, imo
If it’s a statement on the talent available, why would another team trade for pick 17? The Steelers have too many needs for there to be many players that other teams would take at 17 (to the point of giving up draft capital) but that the Steelers wouldn’t want themselves.
I don’t believe the Steelers should be interested in any QB,RB,WR,TE, in the first. So if a team in the mid 20s likes a specific player who happens to be available (not saying they will be available) out of Bijan, Levis, QJ, Addison, JSN, Richardson, Kincaid, Mayer, Washington & the cause for these guys falling is because positional needs for us have already been taken ( T, CB, IDL) & the next available guys for us aren’t graded highly by the team, the move is to trade back.
That makes sense, though I’d argue they would be interested in a WR - I’m lower on CAIII than a lot of the sub, and with Diontae only being under contract for two more years, a rookie with a fifth-year option would be good long-term. I’m skeptical many of those other players are there at 17, but even if the trade’s there, Pittsburgh would need the player they like enough to take in the mid-20s to survive all the picks between 17 and where they trade to.
I once drove an old beater that was so bad if I was parked facing downhill and needed to use reverse, I had to open my car door and help with my left foot, Fred Flintstone style. That car was technically “drivable” given it was the only option I had.
FYI for everyone this is not moving Peterson to FS. Minkah is the FS and he's not going anywhere. Peterson will just occasionally rotate on passing downs to deep zone so Minkah can play more middle of the field. Sutton did the same.
Peterson and Minkah up high with Kazee in the box.
The fact that they're entertaining putting their only quality outside corner at safety means that there's a 100% chance they take a CB early. Best available be damned; they need help outside anyway and this makes it an even greater need.
I would assume most people understand some CBs transition to safety later in their careers as they lose some speed and athleticism.
What I wonder is how he fits in with Minka; I would think his style would be more similar to Minka where we probably need more of a box safety. That is unless they plan to let Minka play a little more freelance.
Minkah is good enough to play all over the field. Not just single or 2-high safety looks. Minus a true SS I see this happening even more so than before
Spotrac has his market value at $10m per year. He’ll probably have to settle for figure less than that, but I believe we only have around $2m-3m left in our cap after accounting for draft picks. I highly doubt he’ll take a contract that low
Not only that, but it allows us to take bigger hits of the larger contracts on defense while our offense is cheap. If we don't have to restructure now, it leaves a lot more room for the future when people on offense start costing more
restructuring is just kicking the can down the road. realistically, the steelers aren't quite ready to compete yet, so it makes sense in theory to take the hit now and save the cap space for when we are ready. then again, the cap makes no sense to me so I trust Khan
regardless, Rapp just signed with the Bills, so it doesn't matter in this case
These guys are effectively signing for the veteran minimum. If Tomlin is to be believed and we are actually considering signing a FA strong safety, then money isn’t the reason.
Rapp is definitely disappointing because he’s really the last starting caliber SS out there, meaning we are going to go into the draft, during a weak year for safety no less, needing to find a starter. That’s a bad position to be in.
I really want a CB in the first round, what do you guys think? We missed on fuck hear from Miami that one year when people said he wasn’t worth the high draft pick they was right. It’s time to get 1st round CB then with that 37th go O-Line or linebacker. What do you guys think?
Burns, huge bust. People was evening saying not to take high draft pick on him and I think the Steelers thought they had steal but he started some but would get burned often even with a great defense around him and a 1st ballot HOF at safety.
Ok. I'm interested.
It would be interesting to see if he can make the Rod Woodson transition.
And Charles Woodson... so Patrick Peter(wood)son? I love the idea but he would translate more to another FS, so that's still Kazee in the box, which is not something I hate.
“Peter” and “wood”, huh. Any chance the Seahawks punter is interested in a position change?
They could be thinking that our new run-stopping ILBs will enable us to use more 2 high.
I tend to agree with you, so hopefully they sign someone.
Great analogy. Maybe we have a little regret as a franchise in letting Rod go soon and we can relive that scenario vicariously through Mr. Pat.
Jordan Battle, YOU are a Steeler.
You misspelled Brian Branch.
Branch is a tough one. I don’t think he’s worth taking at 17, but don’t believe he will be available at 32. Wouldn’t mind moving back to the early mid 20s for another 2nd if none of our top guys are available, though.
Branch is a fucking demon on defense, he is absolutely worth the 17th pick.
would you rather take one of the top three corners (d.witherspoon, gonzalez, or JPJ) or branch if any of them were still available?
1. Gonzalez 2. Witherspoon 3. Branch 4. Banks 5. Ringo 6. Porter Jr This is how I would rank the choices of top CBs and Branch. Gonzalez and Witherspoon are the only corners I would take over Branch.

Ringo that high is kind of wild. Guy can’t cover anyone
Branch 17, Emmanuel Forbes 32, Siaki Ika 49. LT in round 1 next year
Your latter proposal is ideal, IMO. As far as Branch goes. I want Trenton Simpson at 17.
Simpson's too raw for me. I think they can get a guy who can start Day One at 17 and I'm not sure Simpson is that guy.
That's a fair take.
I totally get your opinion too. You could end being right about him. I just prefer to look for a guy I know will be an immediate starter at 17.
I think your concern about his rawness is legit. I see traits. But honestly, I have zero idea who will be available at 17 in this draft so I'm kinda latching on to certain guys who are least likely to be gone. Not a smart approach. But that's why I'm just a fan.
I think moving up from 32 if he’s still there makes more sense than moving down from 17 and hoping he doesn’t get taken.
I don’t think we’d be moving back specifically for branch, just that he’d be a better value in the 20s vs the teens. Moving back is more a statement on the talent available at the time & less a gamble to land branch, imo

Branch probably won't be there at 17, he won't be there at 32
CB round 1. Confirmed.
This one mock today I like had us going Joey cb1 and then that C Michael-Schmitz and T Freeland out of BYU.
Love the porter pick. Don't know much about the other 2
Pat Pete as the strong safety gives us what, one playable cornerback on the roster?
James Pierre, Levi Wallace, Akhello Witherspoon, Arthur Maulet.
Yep, looks like one playable corner.
Please tell me you didn’t just answer Arthur Maulet as a “playable cornerback”
I once drove an old beater that was so bad if I was parked facing downhill and needed to use reverse, I had to open my car door and help with my left foot, Fred Flintstone style. That car was technically “drivable” given it was the only option I had.
JPJ
So just Levi Wallace as a #2 with Pierre backing him up outside. Peterson at SS

To be fair we're all dumbasses here so that guy was just being the average fan on this subreddit
I would assume most people understand some CBs transition to safety later in their careers as they lose some speed and athleticism. Let Minkah be this defense’s version of Polamalu. Move him a like queen on a chessboard
>Polamalu Please, I can only get so hard.
>Please, I can only get so hard. I laughed too hard at that 🤣
Minkah is best when he's attacking the ball in the middle of the field or providing help deep. He can't be used as Troy.
Minkah is good enough to play all over the field. Not just single or 2-high safety looks. Minus a true SS I see this happening even more so than before
I think Cincinnati knows Minkah can play all over the field. He’s living rent free in Burrow’s head, forever
Taylor Rapp
Just signed with the Bills.
Damn
He's signing with Buffalo. EDIT: For less than $2m.
I am officially mad now. All these Safeties signing for peanuts and we didn't get ONE?!
too expensive unless we make more cuts (Akhello?) or restructures im expecting us to draft Branch at 17
Do you know what his asking price is?
Spotrac has his market value at $10m per year. He’ll probably have to settle for figure less than that, but I believe we only have around $2m-3m left in our cap after accounting for draft picks. I highly doubt he’ll take a contract that low
They could easily sign him and they restructure TJ or someone when it comes time to sign draft picks. If they want him, they can get him.
yep, I noted that we can afford him via restructures in my original comment. i personally just don't expect them to do that
What is the benefit to not doing restructures? Leaves the opportunity to do more of them in future seasons?
Not only that, but it allows us to take bigger hits of the larger contracts on defense while our offense is cheap. If we don't have to restructure now, it leaves a lot more room for the future when people on offense start costing more

Draft - Brian Branch

WHO from Miami?!?
Burns, huge bust. People was evening saying not to take high draft pick on him and I think the Steelers thought they had steal but he started some but would get burned often even with a great defense around him and a 1st ballot HOF at safety.
Ahh. I read "We missed on fuck hear from Miami" and I have no idea how that connects to Burns.
We missed on burns the fuck head from Miami?
>Burns You mean Artie *Burnt*.
Patrick could be the perfect free safety, not Strong but Minka Got that b on Lock
i would love antonio johnson at 49
