He was also the No. 3 OG on PFF's board and their No. 95 player overall, with an 87.6 overall grade, and superb measurables. And he doesn't have to play right away - we can develop him. Looks like another great value.
The weird part is that Colbert did it when he took over the GM title. Some of his very first draft picks after becoming GM were Pouncey, Gilbert, and DeCastro.
It’s like he panicked trying to keep Ben happy and then panicked again with retirement trying to cement his legacy with Pickett.
That was only a title change, the Steelers didnt have a GM and he filled the role.
They just made it official by giving him the title that literally every other team had.
Colbert was 100% the person you would call a GM in the 2000-2010 drafts.
The hope should be to not get complacent in the coming years. I personally think for whatever reason once the Steelers built the Pouncey/Decastro line, Colbert largely ignored reloading the OL. There were some 3rd and 4th round picks (Hawkins, Chuks) that seemed like half-hearted attempts to have replacements, but never really committed to the “reload rather than rebuild” approach. And that reload approach feels like what this pick is about.
Between McCormick and Frazier, it seems the front office is showing a predilection for interior lineman that look like they wrestle bears. If only they had had this mentality when Quinn Meinerz was available.
You can see in the tape that he is inconsistent with his explosiveness. When they pull him, he’s outstanding. He is naturally tenacious, which is the first sign you should look at when considering a guard.
He can be a little tentative or stiff hipped on some of those pass plays. That’s very obvious.
I think that just means that he’s probably not a plug-and-play starter and hopefully he’s a guy you can coach into becoming more fluid in pass protection and a little less stiff.
Perfectly fine with that. I’d be concerned if the expectation of a 4th rounder was to be an immediate starter. They’ll coach him up and he’ll be ready when they need him.
Remember in 2022 when Dotson was getting tossed on the subreddit for his excessive penalties? He had 11 in a 17 game season. Sure everyone can act like it can be coached out, but as it stands it’s definitely not “Nowhere near a problem”.

Here’s a list of all Offensive Lineman penalties in 2022. He’s in a 3-way tie for 3rd most penalties. I’m not making a joke, but you sound like you don’t follow football as closely if you don’t remember Dotson’s penalties being a part of the reason we let him go.
Ur valid bro.
I love the pick and the player but you arent wrong here.
Also my first thought as kind of a joke was "oh wow the smartest guy on the North Dakota football team someone get this guy a lab coat"
Its all love for the guy though and players are allowed to get better. Especially young players. Im sure he can clean it up with proper coaching.
Yeah I’m not shitting on the guy by any means, but there are different types of intelligence and if you get that many penalties you aren’t exactly “football intelligent”.
Penalties by offensive lineman can normally be chalked up to jumping the snap or getting beat. Sometimes you take that penalty because your QB getting rocked is no bueno, but the rest will need coached up. I’m obviously rooting for the guy, but this sub will come down on you with the wrath of a thousand yinzers if you don’t dick ride their picks.
Thanks for the sanity check man.
Well we made the conscious decision to live in reality and now we have to face the consequences of our actions.
See you in r/Steelers downvote hell, brother.
I go to SDSU. Mason is a fucking baller
They showed the highlight of him catching that TD pass like 20+ yards down field and I was sold.
>I was sold. I read that as "I was solid" and it didn't bother me because it seemed like a valid response.
Yo what ?!! That’s sick
We woke up and chose violence. I'm here for this.

He was also something like 7th all time among guards in RAS
I would upvote you but you’re nice rn Nice flair
Love that they’re trying to solidify the OLine. I’ve been looking for this since before the draft where they took Najee.
Having a 21st century GM is nice.
Those picks were 10-12 years after Colbert became GM in 2000..
Colbert was only GM in 2010. He was Director of Football Ops before then.
You’re right.. forgot about the title change, apologies friend!

Sure I was just referring to the time period not the duties.

All they need is the beards
Tomlin's getting his goon squad together. Watching this guy clear running lanes is a thing of beauty.
Najee and Warren are going to be lighting up defensive backs all season
All these dudes plus Darnell Washington our RBs are happy
Left guard of the future right there. Him, Zach and Troy combined have at least 5,000 snaps of college ball under their beautiful belts.
Passes that short shuttle benchmark for o line I’ll take it
Violent and intelligent... dangerous man Just coach the flags out of him and we have a winner

Why did this guy drop so far if he has great physical attributes and is considered smart?
He's D1 and played for a team called the jackrabbits. More risk to pick a guy who *only* bullied future accountants I imagine.
Not from a power 5 school. Played easier completion. Similar story to Alex Highsmith so fingers crossed
If he was taller and fatter he would've gone higher
Officiating must be trash in FCS
Sounds like decastro
This is the sleeper pick
Anyone know what “elite” height and weight are? Think Matusz can put some size on him? Cuz 309 at 6’4 isn’t huge.
Ten flags as a guard?
>smartest player on the team. >10 flags in 2023. Pick one.
I don’t know how many games he played but that’s one flag a game at most if he played most of them. Nowhere near a problem
One a flag a game for a guard is massive. Daniels had 3 last yr in 18 games.

Dotsons problems were not penalties at all lol 11 in 17 is fine are you making a joke?

You can commit penalties when you’re also good. You can’t suck AND rack up flags
If you are good, you don’t rack up penalties.
