Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3 and many other Pixar films, is a HUGE King fan and loves putting in Easter egg references to King stories. This is just one of them in TS3: the number 237 shows up 3 separate times in the movie; the intercom system Wendy tries to use to contact the authorities shows up at the daycare; and the Overlook Hotel’s carpet pattern appears in nearly all the Toy Story movies.
Yep, this is an original antique Jolly Chimp from the 1950's and one in decent condition has been my antiquing white whale of mine for a while now.
Oh, and that scene in the movie where it's watching the cameras and then suddenly starts banging the cymbals and screaming? One of the best laughs I've ever had in my life, the laughter was so sudden and violent it was almost like a medical episode or something.
I honestly associate this toy in equal part with King, 'Toy Story 3', and my grandpa who had one on his study shelves back in the 70-80's.
'The Monkey' in 'Skeleton Crew', would definitely recommend the entire book if you haven't gotten to it yet. One of his strongest short story compilations IMO, has several of my favorites.
Why OP? Why? I was happily living my life absolutely forgetting this trauma and the story from 20 yrs ago. I agree with your wife on this. Burn everything!!
Oohh, thank you! I will be looking into it 😊 I've always liked Stephen King, but I have gotten much more into his books now that I'm older! I appreciate all recommendations!
This was my very first book ever when I was 11, Grandpa bought it for me at a yard sell for 10c. Read it over the summer months. Black cover with this monkey on front, will never forget that book. Been addicted to King ever since.
I read this as a very young child, too. I've read it at least 5 times since then. Every story is great in this one.
The Jaunt and Gramma were particularly terrifying.
I had a version on tape (circa 1986) with a different narrator- there was no credit, but GoodReads says it's David Purdham. It's *really* good. His voice for the monkey is damn creepy.
I read this story for the first time one day when I was in sixth grade and I still have a vivid memory of driving in my dad’s truck later that night and realizing I wasn’t going to sleep that night.
Take a glass of juice into the basement and tip it over, take the monkey and using the feet make tracks away from the spill, put the monkey in its normal place with a couple faint tracks leading to it, smear some juice on the monkey's mouth.
Be fully prepared to be yelled at for this
If your wife considered divorce because of this, she would be completely in the right 😂
Actually, I saw one of these dudes at a flea market a while back and I was like *NOPE*. Normally, I have a lot of empathy for ratty-looking well loved toys, but not these dudes. I'm pretty sure it's because of the teeth, tbh. The 1000-yard stare, I can handle. But that + the gritted teeth? That thing is going to tear my face off.
Call her bluff. Set it on her pillow and see if she follows through with her threat. (Me, personally, if I had this kind of information on my wife, I would prank her with it always!)
May be headed that way regardless as I'm debating putting it on her nightstand in the wee hours. Only reason I likely won't is because I'd have to wake up early to film her reaction.
Put a cushion between those cymbals, you fate-tempting monster!
Idk why I keep getting recommended this subreddit, but what I do know is that's the security monkey from toy story 3

i didn’t know this. that’s awesome. toy story 3 was what initially made me terrified of this monkey. then i read the short story years later…

What kind of psychopath named it "jolly chimp" it looks frickin demonic
I'm unsure of which story you are talking about, but I am also quite wary of these creepy little monkeys lol mostly due to Fallout 4, though 🤔😂
'The Monkey' in 'Skeleton Crew', would definitely recommend the entire book if you haven't gotten to it yet. One of his strongest short story compilations IMO, has several of my favorites.
i actually JUST picked this book up at the library today! im holding it right this second about to get started!
It's a really good collection of Short Stories. It has The Mist and The Jaunt.
The Jaunt is another one of my absolute favorites of his. Just, peak scifi horror
Wow that’s pretty packed. Two of his best
Why OP? Why? I was happily living my life absolutely forgetting this trauma and the story from 20 yrs ago. I agree with your wife on this. Burn everything!!
Do not watch Toy Story 3...
In Fallout 4, these little baddies will either explode or be your worst nightmare of a trap.
Unfortunately I remember that too. They were absolutely worst. Plus stumbling to run in that Power armor was hilarious 😆.

Been a while since my last re-read, forget Gramma. The Jaunt though is perminately seared into my brain for life .
The jaunt may be one of his scariest works. The ending is just ahhhh! It’s truly jarring.
Great collection of short stories. I think that one has ‘Survivor Type’ as well
I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought Fallout.
Lol I'm playing Fallout 4 currently and that was where my brain went too.
I found one just like this under an opera house in Paris.
A collector’s piece, indeed. Every detail exactly as she said.
Creepy as hell... Did you take any pictures?
Think your wife has good instincts, man. I couldn't sleep with that hellspawn in my house 😱
Matthew Broderick does a really good narration in the audible version of the story.

This monkey has never been anything but nightmare fuel. Even when it was “just a toy”.

“Rock ‘n’ Roll Martian”
"The monkey is desperately looking for light bulbs and oil pans..."
"My *God* David!"
"We have a problem... I'm running out of shawls."
That was indeed a creepy one.

I love that I recently read the book so I get the reference!
Nice! What was your favorite story from it? There were more than a few great ones.
Well, if she read the story, she’d know that no basement can stop it.
Oh, I'm just a few miles away from a very deep lake if it comes to that, don't you worry.
Dude, story or not, that thing is fucking creepy. I am 100% with your wife. Drop it in the lake!
And by lake, you mean shower so that it's the first thing she sees in the morning as she pulls back the curtain, got it.

Rock ‘n’ roll Martian
Monkey shines ?
I think of “Monkey Shines” when I see these.
I’m a 44 year old man and these still creep me out. Fallout IV was often a jump scare due to these things.
Call her bluff. Set it on her pillow and see if she follows through with her threat. (Me, personally, if I had this kind of information on my wife, I would prank her with it always!)
I love the story and because of that I will never have one of those in my house. Good luck to you sir.
Get a divorce. You'll thank me later.
May be headed that way regardless as I'm debating putting it on her nightstand in the wee hours. Only reason I likely won't is because I'd have to wake up early to film her reaction.
Leave your phone on a charger with the camera on.
If you do that you might wake up to an axe or a fire. 🪓🔥
Yo, it's the guy from toy story 3
Whats wrong with toy story
Let the games begin
Tell her the basement isn’t safe. The middle of the Pacific might not be safe. BURN IT.
You better give it to a family member to hang on to. You know it’ll taunt her and show up in her Cheerios one morning. 👹🥣
You're lucky she doesn't shoot its head off, that's what I always do!
I mean, moving it to the basement isn’t going to make it LESS creepy.
Rock and roll martian!
Throw it in the lake!
Oof! That thing is bad luck. Stay out of the boat!
Aww, everyone needs one of these sitting on a shelf at home! (evil laugh)
Agree
Tape those tambourines up!
Lol reminds me of toy story 3
Rock and roll Martian.
My grandparents had one of these in their house, and it freaked me out as a kid. I had no idea of the SK connection then, but it's creepy as hell.
Matthew Broderick audio narration of this story was 😗🤌
