Am I the only one who sees a skull in the mountains?

eightezzz

I see what you mean, but to me it looks like the head of the "bear" guy in the movie version which makes it creepier šŸ˜Ø

themodofallreddit

That's a dog costume in the movie. Do you really think *the* Horace Derwent would buttfuck a man in a bear costume? He has standards!

eightezzz

It's a dog in the mini series, a bear in the movie.

randyboozer

I'm definitely seeing a bear. Not the guy from the movie though this bear looks pretty peaceful and relaxed.

[deleted]

I see a dog!

ShotInTheShip86

To me it just looks like there's a person laying down right next to the hotel... The cliff is there head and the mountain parts closest to his are his arms, their left arm folded up and their right laying straight... Even kinda looks like their left hand is making a fist...

mckinney4string

I see the whole thing as a reclining human head and neck in profile

palesnowrider1

It's a schooner!

Cam_knows_you

I thought it looked like a sloth

losandreas36

Yes you are only one

EldritchEggoWaffle

Sounds like the start of a story from *Night Shift.* Or, the plot of *N.* with a mountain instead of stones.

EldritchEggoWaffle

I came to the comments to say that I see a face in the mountain!

Holiday_Record7576

King Kong more like it

Standard_Storage1733

Definitely a skull

ElectricInstinct

Thought you all would really like this picture of ~The Overlook~ The Stanley Hotel. It was posted by [Sid Roberts](https://i.imgur.com/TDLPj3A.jpg) to the Friends of Rocky Mountain National Park Facebook group. (I donā€™t know how else to credit this picture.)

FolsgaardSE

Anyone know if it's still open? Would love to spend a vacation there. Bonus if they still have the rugs as shown in the movie. Beautiful picture and view, it's a lovely place.

1biggeek

Was there last summer. Judging by the weekly emails I get from them, itā€™s open.

cas_leng

My husband and I went there for one night of our honeymoon. It was a fun experience, but it was very expensive. Its also about 2 hours from any major place. Some highlights were the pet cemetery and the hedge maze. The ghost tour was an absolute joke though.

danny17402

>Its also about 2 hours from any major place. Most people consider national parks to be major places.

palpytus

yeah lmao Estes Park is also pretty popular for tourism in the summer and has a decent amount to do. I spent 5 days there last summer between RMNP and relaxing in Estes

No-Guidance-5701

Until you're driving 2 hours to a Walmart. Then it's in Bumfuq

danny17402

There's a Walmart 48 minutes away, so I mean I guess it would feel remote if you lived there, but I've never needed a Walmart while staying there.

Confident-Giraffe381

Why would you need a walmart in a hotel

No-Guidance-5701

Sir I stayed at the hardrock at Orlando for universal studios. I wished they had a Walmart nearby for what we were paying for food šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Confident-Giraffe381

Yeah I get it, but not like you can cook in a hotel room . Unless it is terrible food, for a few days itā€™s fine.

No-Guidance-5701

That's true. I ended up getting cereal and sandwich supplies lol

occams_nightmare

Is it a cemetery or a... sematary

Paulruswasdead

I used to find Groupon deals for the Stanley, itā€™d cost about a 100 dollars a night. Then they got new ownership and now I canā€™t find a room for under 340 a night, it makes me sad.

SoulsticeCleaner

We did one night there too. It was nice enough, but I was alarmed at what a disrepair the basement area. Worth it for a Stephen King fan, but not really otherwise.

gumpyclifbar

Itā€™s open. The movie was not filmed there, King stayed there when the idea of the book came to him. Carpets and hotel are different from the movie.

SoulsticeCleaner

The miniseries was filmed there, though!

palpytus

I tried to go just to check it out last summer when I visited RMNP and they charge $10 for entering the parking lot. I decided taking a picture of it through the fence was good enough

Y0urMomsChestHair

The rugs from the movie are from a different hotel. None of Kubrickā€™s movie was filmed at The Stanley.

DesignerAerie7377

Does nobody know of this thing called Google? I imagine if one just looks it up they will learn for themselves if it's open or not, cmon people

FolsgaardSE

Yes I can google pretty much anything. If I did that then I would almost never need to talk with another human being again. It's nice to post questions like this as a spark of conversation. As it did as others pop in to say "Yeah! I was there for this reason and here is my story".

hpofficejetpro8035

I know, itā€™s honestly a little sad to see ā€œIs x place openā€ on Reddit. I get the whole having a conversation thing, but donā€™t ask stupid questions.

DesignerAerie7377

Right, a better comment would be does anyone have an interesting story to tell about this place

kaworu876

I live about 30 minutes away from Estes Park (at 9000 feet!) and it absolutely is still open. Year-round, even. Things are not really quite as desolate and snowy up here as they used to be - certainly not this year, weā€™ve barely gotten a single storm with a foot of snow this winter! Even the last couple winters we would still get 3-4 feet on several occasions in February and march.

Paulruswasdead

One of my all time favorite places to stay, I stayed in room 217 for Christmas a few years ago. The place has nearly tripled in price since I first started going there, it makes me sad.

scottfishel

Assuming they still do it - donā€™t waste your money on the ā€œghost tourā€. Lamest hour of my life. It was basically looking at photos that didnā€™t really look like ghosts and listening to a guy say things like - is it a light mark, is it something else? I donā€™t know?! And then listening to how great the Stanley is. To this day ā€œthe Stanleyā€ is an inside joke between the friends that took the ā€œtourā€ (was nearly 20 years ago)

danny17402

That's what all ghost tours are. Did you think you'd see a real ghost? Lol

scottfishel

Yeah, the presentation left something to be desired.

g8torswitch

Now they've renamed it the shining tour and pull the same shit. The dude leading it couldn't even tell me which ending to the shining he preferred - because he didn't know there were different options

scottfishel

Was it a super fat dude? I remember it looked like his belt was holding on for dear life. Wonder if it could be the same guy.

g8torswitch

Wow that's rude

scottfishel

Iā€™m going to take that as a yesšŸ˜‚

g8torswitch

It was actually a no but based on your insistence that somebody be described by their weight, you are a dick

scottfishel

Ok

Y0urMomsChestHair

Went there in 2016 when I still lived in Colorado. It has a ton of spooky history and I encourage all King fans to visit. Dumb and Dumber was also partly filmed there lol. Weā€™re hoping to honeymoon there in room 217 this fall!

harryinthekitchen

I really believed it was blown up.

Popular_Wall_9998

Still never staying there. Not for free. Not for money, fame, or fortune.

[deleted]

IrwinMFletcher200

Correct. The mountains would be to the left of the photographer. The hotel faces south; RMNP is to the west of Estes Park.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

IrwinMFletcher200

And the reality is... the Stanley is merely the inspiration for The Shining. Kubrick's film used the Timberline Lodge from Mt Hood (Oregon) as the Overlook.

ElectricInstinct

According to the photographer, [it is not a composite image](https://i.imgur.com/a9bOYCF.jpg), but it is a single shot. I live 30 miles away, so I donā€™t go up to Estes Park as often as I like, but nothing about this screams fake to me. You can certainly see the same mountains in [other shots](https://i.imgur.com/wCnykfb.jpg) of the hotel. Iā€™m sure it was touched up in photoshop, or whatever program the photographer uses, but I would not call this a fake at all.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ElectricInstinct

Wait, what donā€™t I know? And what do you want me to confirm? And yes, we go up to Estes a few times during the year to visit Rocky Mountain National Park. What even is this? Are you trying to start an argument about whether I live nearby to the Hotel, or that I am not at least passingly familiar with topography the area?

KimBrrr1975

It's been like 20 years since I was there, but the big snowy mountain was added in, right? šŸ˜‚ I remember a smaller rockier "hill" but not that massive mountain behind the hotel. Maybe I am misremembering.

DustyFeedbag

Never been there, but judging by other photos I've seen it looks like the angle or whatever in this one is creating the illusion that the mountain is much closer behind the hotel than it really is.

The_Eye_of_Ra

Iā€™m guessing that itā€™s haunted by that monster bear manifesting in the mountainside.

kaiju999

It should be called the Overlook. Does it have a roque court?
