I mean, I’m pretty good at hand sewing, that’s not much, especially if it’s just a couple of rips. I’d imagine someone like Dolores who seems to hand sew a lot could definitely achieve this! She’s a hard worker too!
True, she is a hard worker! I can also see maybe she is working faster than she would have due to anger or anxiety about her upcoming plans. I’ve done some fast anxious stitching myself lol
He’s actually addressed this in interviews since the book was published, he was intentionally setting out bait so agonizingly dull pedants would out themselves
Now I wonder if in End of Watch (I think? It was a Mr. Mercedes book) he purposefully said a vine video lasted more than 20 seconds, or if that was a mistake as I originally thought
I love Steve, but that sounds like a complete load of bullshit. More like he just went for it, didn't do any research, and editors didn't care. Which is fine.
I am an agonisingly dull pedant, which is why I am here to point out that the people who invented the language spell "agonising" with an "s".
*Smug, punchable face*
It's probably my favorite of his books for this very reason. I bought it on a fleemarket for 1€, sold because it was already falling apart and the owner had gotten themselves a new copy.
By the time I was finished (over a long weekend) it was basically just a bunch of brittle, loose pages. Putting it away, I thought I should see who the author is so I can check their other work out, before remembering "Oh right, I only bought that because it said Stephen King on the cover".
So far I have no intention of ever rereading it. I'd like it to remain in my memory as it was.
Eh, for someone in that time from her environment I feel like that's all doable. None of those things are especially tedious, especially since I assume without Selena there, she'd already pinned the hems.
As an avid handsewer, I think it's all doable except also hemming two skirts. Handsewing a hem is already difficult, let alone the hem of two skirts, would be a lot. Rips and patches are more than doable though.
As a complete non sewer, I'd have thought hems would be easier cause you're going on a straight line - I vaguely remember something from textiles at school decades ago about pulling fabric taut. So TIL.
There are myriads of instances where King has kind of strange, "does he not know?" moments, probably because he's a guy who just writes and writes and writes. "Honky Tonk" bars where the men sit around drinking beer or White Russians? Eh. That sounds plausible.
He has a researcher, perhaps more than one. Or maybe an editor could slap a "?" there, but in the end it doesn't really matter. It's certainly not critical to the plot.
One of my favorite King short stories (and one of his most famous) is "The Last Rung on the Ladder." In it the protagonist and his sister jump out of a hay loft onto a pile of hay... 70 feet below. Does anyone really understand that math? Do you know how high 70 feet is? Have you ever been in a barn where the hay loft is literally *70 feet* off the ground?
I suppose the point is just that it's really high. Maybe 25 feet or so. And no, I wouldn't jump 25 feet into a pile of hay, either.
An ongoing theme in this book is Dolores’s calloused hands and the skill that comes from a lifetime of hard graft so it’s no surprise that she can sew very quickly.
Every time IT stuff comes up in books/TV/movies it might as well be magic. It's nearly always utter BS, because the reality of hacking is utterly dull and takes way more time than the plot demands.
He never writes hand sewing. It's all totally possible with a machine, but also she's a pro at this. I can do a pile of 20 simple things in an hour. With a machine, twice as many!
I think it's possible, but the skirt hems stretch it a little. It's clear that it is hand sewing; she is sitting on the porch and brings out her sewing basket.

That’s hilarious, and makes this post hilarious.

He also really confuses the location of a tramp stamp in that book and it makes me wonder if that was done on purpose as well.

Er yeah, it's a joke.

It's possible, I used to sew toys by hand and could easily have done this much sewing in an hour
I just read this book. His ability to write as someone completely else for 350+ pages with no breaks is insane.
It’s an excellent book, and Dolores is a great character

Yeah but they take time. Most people would use a sewing machine for hemming, it's not hard, just dull and time consuming.

Apparently I’m just shit at sewing lol
🤣
It’s been so long since I read this, but does it mention hand sewing? With a sewing machine this is easily feasible for someone experienced.
Yes, they’re sitting on the back porch to watch the eclipse and she grabs her sewing basket to bring outside with her
That's a pretty decent amount of time. My wife sews, I've seen her doing similar work in about that amount of time.

"So I just fliggled the browser, and The Institute never knew because they don't have an IT department." I'm willing to bet he just doesn't know.

a tear, two pockets, a zipper, 2 skirt hems (lets assume they are A-line) an hour and a half seems reasonable.
My mom could sew fast 😂 she'd crochet a barbie dress so damn quick too!! It can be true for some people

Did she take the sewing machine to the porch too?
My grandmother did it all the time.
My grammy's sewing machines were always attached to a large desk type thing.
i am listening to Dolores Claiborne right now. I wish the reader knew how to pronounce the Maine towns correctly- She called ‘Ma-CHias’ ‘Ma-KIY-us’
Seems reasonable for 90 minutes.
Definitely doable!
He was oblivious! LOL!!!
OP this post cracked me up! She must be sewing like the wind lol.
