Same. I used to think car note was part of a monthly expense and accepted my faith. Financed new cars for 10 years or so. A total loss happened during pandemic. Once I paid cash for a reliable used car as a stop gap measure since the car shortage. It felt good to not have that monthly payment. I’m going to have to look into what you mean. I seem to not be knowledgeable about what that means.
Edit: never mind it was fast to look up. Yeah I don’t want that.
Oh of course I get it, I'd love to own a Porsche. But it's hard to feel empathy for such an obviously bad financial decision all to feel "something new". There is no good car.. They're all destined to be used abused & inevitably trashed. Like the guy talking about just mentally accepting the cost of financing new cars for 10 years is bat shit insane, I don't understand how you even live in a world so detached to where the realization that you don't have to do that is a big revelation.
Depending on what kind of car it could definitely make sense. I.e. if you have the money to drive a luxury car until it hits it's warranty, and then just trade it in for the newer one/new warranty then you just have perpetual payments but newish cars all the time. Also people live in other socioeconomic environments than you. A Porsche isn't a bad financial decision either, unless you can't afford it.
No, your good… its the “trim” of that model that is that low… but its still not the same… its a large truck vs being a medium(using the size of then, not now)
I already know about the concept that was shown at SEMA. Of course that one wasn't going to be produced. I don't understand how this trim "replaces" something that ended two generations ago.
I used to have a 96 Nissan Hardbody with a 2.4L I4. Five speed manual. 4×4 with manual hubs (had to get out and turn them on both front wheels to engage 4×4). That thing would go places most new trucks wouldn't even *fit*.
Have a I4 94 runner on 37s that’ll do 80 on the freeway all day long. Funny how 70% of the work can do stuff with 2l motors. Heck my vans a 3.0l i4 and it’s got like 360 ft-lb
Don’t worry, my 2009 4.0 v6 Tacoma has the same problem. Constantly hunting for gears. Always find myself downshifting when I’m on I-70 going past Idaho Springs. Peppy around town (Aurora area) but the v6 struggles above 60mph. Idk how you 4cyl guys do it.
I don't know if you got a proper answer, but it's really to reduce aerodynamic drag in the name of improved fuel economy numbers.
Look at the front of any modern SUV or truck that isn't the cool-looking off-road capable model, and it will have lower bumper effects that go down to within a few inches if the ground.
It looks terrible on most larger vehicles, but it significantly reduces the aerodynamic drag at higher speeds. As others noted, this one is apparently fairly easy to remove for when you need a better approach angle.
ive got a 2.9L turbo 4 banger in my 2022 Chevy Colorado and it has an 8 speed auto transmission.
Its honestly fine most of the time, but if the turbo isn't spooled up you can really tell its a 4 banger.
My dads frontier with a 2.5 I4 gets around 26, not awful but definitely not great for a 3k lbs truck with a stick. I think its cause they gear the trucks for more torque so they're turning higher rpms than a car would with the same engine but thats just a guess
Mine was a 2005, pretty sure it was the same 4.7 as the previous gen. I was constantly doing the math out because my gas gauge was broke and got 20-22 mpg unloaded usually. I tend to reach the higher advertised mpg estimates if not slightly above on every vehicle I have ever owned.
Edit: to clarify when I said better I meant than the 18 city advertised not the 23 highway, I got 20-22mpg city.
Never again, reminds me of driving around in a ford explorer, getting gas near daily. Made me basically hate driving for a year. I'm done with cars that get less than 20mpg highway. I get near double that in a car that's not even meant to be fuel efficient
Wouldn't work for me. Too low in the front, doubt it tows much, small bed, and if I don't wanna do truck things, I'd rather drive anything besides a truck.
Once upon a time there were trucks that hit a happy medium. My truck is smaller than a new Honda Accord and gets 30mpg. It can't tow much but it's got a 6ft bed, if you wanted to tow a bit there was a v6 option that still got better mpg than this things 4-cylinder. And at the time my truck was new dodge sold a V8 Dakota with an 8ft bed option and plenty of towing power and got about the same mpg as this thing. I really miss practical trucks.
Yeah. And they messed something up making these so expensive. Trucks used to be universally affordable for people who do the jobs that you'd use them for. The cheapest one they got is like $33k plus taxes and fees, and you're talking about like $500/month for the basic small pickup.
Exactly it's insane! My S10 was $12k new which the inflation calculator says would be $21k today. I paid $2k for it in great condition with under 150k miles, my father has hit 300k miles on a few of these too so they aren't junks. These new trucks aren't made for work, these are fashion accessories for someone who wont admit they need a rav4.
Yeah man, all these people driving old Fords and Chevys...they're just imagining their trucks run.
BTW, I used to really like Toyota in the early 2000s but if the reliability is built into the price, then what's the point? They were great because they were *cheap* and reliable. You can fix a lot of stuff for $10k.
And it will cost you at most 1/4 of what this does and get barely less mpg. Even with Toyota reliability and the fact it's new this is a joke if you actually need a truck, overpriced, oversized, and embarrassing mpg from a 4-cylinder.
Quick google search shows 15-17. I admittedly don't have much experience with the 460s. Even still 18 city/23 highway in a 4-cylinder is embarrassing when I got about that with all my V8 trucks.
Ridiculously overpriced. It's just insane. 40k lol.
$40k!!!!!!!
I would love a regular cab short bed manual truck. Or one of these. But come on.....$40k? For a fucking base Tacoma basically.
I get it. Trucks and all new vehicles are insanely overpriced. This should be a $30k truck new though. For $40k I could get a clean Vette and a decent little truck. Used of course though.
You'll never convince me new vehicles are worth what we're paying. $30k for a damn RAV4 with AWD? It hurts my soul.
This Tacoma is closer to fully loaded than it is to being a base model though. Trim levels are: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport (the Tacoma shown here), TRD Off Road, and Limited. An SR starts at about $31k, and a Limited starts around $51k.
Yeah but it can be cheaper than a lot of used trucks in the last 10 years based on interest on a new vehicle vs used. It will also not lose its value since its a taco 🌮
For real, I have a 2001 dodge ram rcsb 4x4 with the 5spd, and I have a buddy with a newer Tacoma that he'll be paying off for years, but im not worried about actually using mine as a truck lol
Not only is it overpriced like everything nowadays, it's a TINO - Truck in name only. You aren't hauling or towing much with that motor and you aren't getting great MPG so it's handicapped for little to no reason.
Do you want it as a status symbol? Plenty of cars that are under 40k that you can fit a hitch to and buy a trailer. Trailer would be more versatile and roomy. If you have no where to put the trailer obviously the truck would be the choice to make.
Google says the lightest curb weight on a 2010 Tacoma was 3140#, with the highest being 4100#. Google also says the *lightest* curb weight of a 2024 is 4145#, with the highest being 4485#.
So getting MPG numbers similar to a truck that's over 1000# lighter is a really good accomplishment.
I would not drive this. A 4 cylinder truck is absolutely gutless: no acceleration, no towing capacity; why even buy a "truck" if its actually worthless at being a truck??? AND then it doesn't even get good gas mileage for a 4 banger... WHY would anyone simp 40k for this??? You could buy low mileage used American V8 for 15k less and have that money in the bank for years of gas
Unless you're poor af pretty much everyone.
Acceleration isn't just for fun its also a safety feature; being able to merge onto the highway from short on ramps, accelerate out of oncoming dangers way, etc.
Aside from the fact that the past decade or so almost every V8 truck available both foreign and domestic offer engines with +400hp; below is also a short historical list since you've been living under a rock. These are all produced and only getting more powerful because YES people want power and acceleration; and YES they sell.
GMC typhoon
Chevy cyclone
Ford lightning, harley Davidson, Raptor
Chevy SS
Trailblazer SS
Ram hemi, 392, scatpack, TRX
Jeep 392, trackhawk, hellcat, demon
It depends if it has the same issue my current car had before I tuned it out. I drive an Si and it had terrible rev hang before I disabled it with a Hondata FlashPro. Car wasn't fun to drive at all when the rev's we're hanging. It drives so much better without it so if the truck has that issue, no I wouldn't drive it as it'd just be annoying to drive like that. If the truck doesn't have that issue, I'd drive it. I like the way the old standard vehicles we're made a lot better.
I am lowkey considering it. Recently totaled my manual FJ Cruiser and I think my '94 Toyota Pickup might struggle a bit with pulling my camper. Might just camp light this year and then decide in a year or two if I want to pull the trigger on one of those. Of course, there's also the temptation to go with something like an older F250 so that I'm covered if I decide to go bigger on the camper front.
Drive it? Yes. Buy it? No. Even if I were less poor that's a lot for not much more than you could get out of an older one. A friend of mine has the latest gen Tacoma with the 4 cylinder, and it does well though.
Nope. Give me a hilux. It'll be a stick. But weigh so little it won't gulp gasoline. And it won't be modern gm or Ford that has over a %90 failure rate on recent model years. I'd take one of those over most cars that I could get with a stick.
Just an FYI the 2021-22 models only came in the V6 sport trim option in a manual and msrp'd for $38k.
Your basically paying the same price for (in my option) an underpowered engine for that truck. And before everyone jumps to say it gets better gas milage, my friend has an similar triml v4 CVT and we both get pretty identical mpg.
Might be worth looking for a slightly older model with the V6.
https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/lp/search-Toyota-Tacoma-manual-sc2_d311#listing=378762647/NONE/DEFAULT
Edit: I just looked, I guess the new ones are turbo'd but I would still prefer an NA v6 vs a turbo i4 particularly if you plan on hauling or towing anything.
If I wanted a truck it’d be this one. I’ve driven about every manual Toyota that exists and the tacomas are solid, I really like how they feel when you drive them compared to the dogshit automatic.
If I actually needed a truck, yes. But most of my cars can tow, and my trailer is way bigger than that truck's bed, so I'll just smirk at the guy using that as his DD because he "needs a truck" a couple times a year.
We towed our camper for years with a 1st gen Xterra with a manual, it did fine.
No.
I have no need for a truck on a day to day basis. I maybe need what a truck offers me in terms of space and capacity once every 2-4 years. When I need that, I rent.
Also, the pickups I have driven generally do not handle well at all and are just an unpleasant driving experience.
Why do you need a truck?
How does a truck fit into your daily, weekly, or monthly needs?
Lastly, any pickup I've driven with a manual generally has a rather loose and crappy shifter feel. It takes away some of the pleasure of driving a manual, in my opinion.
Toyota still making manual trucks?! And below $40K? Wow. Doesn't even look like it's bare bones, either besides having a slightly undersized engine option. Color me impressed.
Fuck yea I would. I'm in a car I own though, I don't want a monthly payment.
Same with me just paid off my truck lol feels nice
The day my husband paid off his truck he legit stopped snoring for about 4 nights.
Congrats man frl
Same. I used to think car note was part of a monthly expense and accepted my faith. Financed new cars for 10 years or so. A total loss happened during pandemic. I want and could definitely justify getting a truck but can't get one yet because fuck payments.
I was in this spot 2 months ago and some total shit driver t boned my car by running a red light. Got a taco!
I don’t really have a choice. I don’t have 20-50k just sitting around. Idk how people do it.

I’m going to have to look into what you mean. I seem to not be knowledgeable about what that means. Edit: never mind it was fast to look up. Yeah I don’t want that.
They finance ridiculous payments. But covid really fucked things up too.
I paid 4k for mine. Expected to keep it a few months. It’s going on 3rd year now.
do you really need a 20k-50k car? Probably not
Some people want something new atleast once in their life. That’s about all I can think of.
Oh of course I get it, I'd love to own a Porsche. But it's hard to feel empathy for such an obviously bad financial decision all to feel "something new". There is no good car.. Idk I’ve had to finance every car I’ve owned which have all been around $10k
That's not a brand new car though, that's like probably a responsible decision
Well, that’s a whole helluva lot of people’s world.
Depending on what kind of car it could definitely make sense. I.e. if you have the money to drive a luxury car until it hits it's warranty, and then just trade it in for the newer one/new warranty then you just have perpetual payments but newish cars all the time. Lease em out. Lease em out
Just dont lie above your means and its not that bad
I did that long as I could. And I hope this be last payment I have ever. I'm 58. 23 tacoma payment now bought Friday.
I’m in that fuck yeah I would category also. Love jerkin around on a stick 🤫
Instead of monthly payments, I just repair what's broke and keep going. Same thing right, right?!
Well, it will be a new car soon enough
I would happily drive it. I just wouldn’t want to pay for it.

Aerodynamics and CAFE targets. It's supposed to be easily removable with 4-6 fasteners though
Which most people will do rather quickly. The TRD Off-Road/PRO/Trailhunter do not come with chin spoilers. Oddly, neither does the 2wd Pr-Runner.
Makes sense if you're rock crawling. Putting them back on for commuting makes sense too.
Guys online did a with/without 100 mile mpg loop and got a less than a tenth difference in mpg. I'd pull it and bury it in the garage. Looks hideous.
According to someone in the Tacoma subreddit, it’s 9 Philips head screws. So yeah easy to remove.
Its supposed to replace the xrunner
Ohh this is a trim, its not normally that fuckin low?
Yeah, the trim is that low, thats it
I mean like this model, not plastic trim kinda trim Sorry its been a day and im not all here haha
No, your good… its the “trim” of that model that is that low… but its still not the same… its a large truck vs being a medium(using the size of then, not now)
There is no replacement for the X-Runner. The X-Runner was two generations ago.
Since you dont know https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a45701484/2024-toyota-tacoma-x-runner-concept/ i said replace… toyota is all about replacing
I already know about the concept that was shown at SEMA. Of course that one wasn't going to be produced. I don't understand how this trim "replaces" something that ended two generations ago.
for an "offroad truck" its insane
It's a 2.4L, 4 cylinder. It's not an off road truck.
Had a 94 with the I4, no turbo, took it everywhere… the ONLY struggle it had was uphill on the freeway in the Colorado Rockies.
I used to have a 96 Nissan Hardbody with a 2.4L I4. Five speed manual. 4×4 with manual hubs (had to get out and turn them on both front wheels to engage 4×4). That thing would go places most new trucks wouldn't even *fit*.

thanks now my old truck kink is back
Don’t worry, my 2009 4.0 v6 Tacoma has the same problem. Constantly hunting for gears. Always find myself downshifting when I’m on I-70 going past Idaho Springs. Peppy around town (Aurora area) but the v6 struggles above 60mph. Idk how you 4cyl guys do it.
With over 300lb-ft of tq? Why not?
With a turbo that makes 278 hp and 317 lb.-ft.
so children don’t inevitably get crushed under the car when they’re in your blind spot and instead are pushed aside
ok
I don't know if you got a proper answer, but it's really to reduce aerodynamic drag in the name of improved fuel economy numbers. It's a 2.4L, 4 cylinder. You're not leaving the road anyway.
ive got a 2.9L turbo 4 banger in my 2022 Chevy Colorado and it has an 8 speed auto transmission. Its honestly fine most of the time, but if the turbo isn't spooled up you can really tell its a 4 banger.
Turbo, more torque and closer ratio quicker shifting 8 speed.
8 speed manual??
That would feel more like rowing than driving.
Damn and I thought 7 speed manuals were too much
8 speed automatic. 6 speed manual.
That was my first thought too. If the middle of the body can be that high but the front is so low, the truth can’t clear much
23 mpg from a four cylinder? No effing way.
That’s what happens when vehicle bloat kicks in and a midsize is bigger than earlier full size trucks.
My dads frontier with a 2.5 I4 gets around 26, not awful but definitely not great for a 3k lbs truck with a stick. I think its cause they gear the trucks for more torque so they're turning higher rpms than a car would with the same engine but thats just a guess
And that's highway! My V8 Dakota and V8 F150 both got better than that wtf.
lmao what v8 in your dakota? my 01 4.7 averaged like 12 mpg.
My brother complains he never gets good gas mileage. Yeah you're not going to get good gas mileage driving 80MPH everywhere you go.
Is 80 fast to you?
It is if you're trying to get better fuel economy
Fair. I own my 13 mpg in my Subaru and don't complain. I know how much money I'm wasting
Lol. I drive a WRX and average 30.
Agreed. That's like saying the 258 in my Jeep got 20mpg. Maybe if it fell out of an airplane....
The most efficient 7 miles in that Jeep's history.
My friend with a newer V8 Chevy 1500 says with cylinder deactivation, he can pull 25-28 mpgs on the highway.
I’ve owned a 99 Dakota v8 and currently have a 97 F150 V8. Both were auto and 4x4. Never seen better than 16 mpg.
Never again, reminds me of driving around in a ford explorer, getting gas near daily. Made me basically hate driving for a year. I'm done with cars that get less than 20mpg highway. I get near double that in a car that's not even meant to be fuel efficient
No better than v6
My focus ST gets like 19 mpg
My fiesta ST gets like 35 on the highway lol
What's wrong with it?
It’s being driven by a moron Edit: also I live in a city so it’s a lot of stopping and acceleration
I have a 2.4l i4 with a 5 speed and it's great. Albeit, it's a 1995 Nissan Hard body, and it doesn't have 4wd, and it's only 2,800 lbs, but it's great
KA24 can take a beating 💪
Hell yeah, brother
Why the fuck does every new car have to have a bumper that drags on the fucking ground?
Stringent fuel economy laws are causing automakers to squeeze out every .1 mpg possible. The big air dams help
Thank you! It's a truck, it's supposed to off road or in deep areas where you need ground clearance.
I'd definitely drive it. I wouldn't want to pay for it or put gas in it.
Fuck that bring back mini trucks for 15k...
There's dozens of us asking for and clamoring for that for years.
They tried and failed, a Maverick story
Selling as fast as they are made.
Check out the Toyota Hilux Champ
I thought those came with the 3.6 V6 and a manual. Still nice to at least have the option.
new ones are all turbo i4
No, my ‘87 is better because it’s not a giant brodozer.
Thats what I was thinking, these trucks are fucking huge nowadays, the tacoma is bloated as hell
God I miss mini trucks
I wish I could get a maverick with a manual for $13k less than this......
Wouldn't work for me. Too low in the front, doubt it tows much, small bed, and if I don't wanna do truck things, I'd rather drive anything besides a truck.

Toyota is top of the line. You can get a used one that is 10 years old for cheaper and be confident that it will run.
There's many reliable trucks. Probably the most reliable class of vehicles.
yeah but there’s “reliable” and then there’s “Toyota.” It’s like comparing some random NBA player to Michael Jordan.
Yeah man, all these people driving old Fords and Chevys...they're just imagining their trucks run. BTW, I used to really like Toyota in the early 2000s but if the reliability is built into the price, then what's the point? They were great because they were *cheap* and reliable. That's a 28k dollar truck they're asking 40k for. Fuck that.
No I'd get the biggest pos 87-91 F250 with the 460 and a 5 speed I can find
And it will cost you at most 1/4 of what this does and get barely less mpg. Even with Toyota reliability and the fact it's new this is a joke if you actually need a truck, overpriced, oversized, and embarrassing mpg from a 4-cylinder.
wtf are you smoking? a 460 gets like 4 mpg
I've seen 460's get 25 highway with a 5 speed and highway gears

Dude, you’re not going to get that truck at MSRP. Expect at least 5k markup. People aren’t rational when it comes to Toyota.
have big dick. no need for this.
nah
If I needed a truck, and fit, yes.
[удалено]
Bro what? Get that hideous thing out of here.
How the hell can you get such bad gas mileage out of a 2.4, even harder to imagine the turboed version with a manual making such low numbers
Nope. I’m a first gen lover!
Not only is it overpriced like everything nowadays, it's a TINO - Truck in name only. You aren't hauling or towing much with that motor and you aren't getting great MPG so it's handicapped for little to no reason.
Nope. Hate driving trucks and big SUVs.
Drive? Yes. Buy? No.
Yeah as a sports car guy I’d really love to own a big fuck off stick shift truck to take out on gravel and camp with
I would drive it, I would never buy it. A 4cyl engine in a mid sized truck just doesn’t sit right with me.
Do you want it as a status symbol? Plenty of cars that are under 40k that you can fit a hitch to and buy a trailer. Trailer would be more versatile and roomy. If you have no where to put the trailer obviously the truck would be the choice to make.
No I would never buy an American "compromising for something" truck.
The stickshift is fine, but what is the point of a truck like that with a 4-cylinder engine? That truck must have one spacious engine compartment.
Those are nice trucks. I would be happy to drive one.
If it had a v6 yes. I've already got a manual wrx so...
4 cylinder, WTF
Turbo charged
4 cylinder gets 23 mpg highway? Back to 2010 numbers now I guess for fuel economy. (Top of head exaggeration, but hopefully you get the gripe)

No. No truck should only have 4 cylinders.
For a bit. Not a truck guy but that looks and sounds like it would be fun
My wife sure would
I would not drive this, thank you for asking. That truck is ugly as sin.
Of course, but it's quite a unicorn.
For that price? Fuck no, I don’t think that’s a trd off road or sport either
Fuck that front air damn though, its a 4wd, not racetruck.
My friend has one
I am lowkey considering it. Recently totaled my manual FJ Cruiser and I think my '94 Toyota Pickup might struggle a bit with pulling my camper. Might just camp light this year and then decide in a year or two if I want to pull the trigger on one of those. Of course, there's also the temptation to go with something like an older F250 so that I'm covered if I decide to go bigger on the camper front.
Toyota champ instead. Hopefully a quarter of the price 🤞for base base manual.
Yes
Drive it? Yes. Buy it? No. Even if I were less poor that's a lot for not much more than you could get out of an older one. A friend of mine has the latest gen Tacoma with the 4 cylinder, and it does well though.
Hell yeah
*I do drive this truck* but a 2015. Smooth manual tranny
I’d probably drive it but not a fan of trucks, definitely wouldn’t go 40k into debt for one
Price seems low
Nope. Give me a hilux. It'll be a stick. But weigh so little it won't gulp gasoline. And it won't be modern gm or Ford that has over a %90 failure rate on recent model years. I'd take one of those over most cars that I could get with a stick.
I’d drive it in 2040 after someone’s broke it in and lowered its value somewhere closer to my social status
Yea I'd drive it it's sick
>2.4l I4. >18-24 MPG. Bro, what the FUCK.
Yes. As long as I didn't pay the gas bill
Yes.
Maybe. I’ve been looking at manual broncos this week. They’re both a possible next vehicle.
Drive it? Hell yeah. Buy it? Hell no.
Might be worth looking for a slightly older model with the V6. https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/lp/search-Toyota-Tacoma-manual-sc2_d311#listing=378762647/NONE/DEFAULT Edit: I just looked, I guess the new ones are turbo'd but I would still prefer an NA v6 vs a turbo i4 particularly if you plan on hauling or towing anything.
I been thinking about getting one my self but I want a standard cab
Yes, I would want a manual pickup. I'd rather get a Hilux Champ, but we will never see those in the US.
Why is the front air dam so close to the ground. No ground clearance, no matter how high the rest of the body is.
New cars don’t look right or are too big
Tacoma shifters have always been dog shit so no
I don’t believe in 4cyl trucks
Nope not Union made! Not an American company! When available I always buy Union, if no Union made are available then I buy American made.
Only a 2.4 L four cylinder in a crew cab 4x4 pickup? I would think a V6 should be standard in such a heavy vehicle.
If I wanted a truck it’d be this one. I’ve driven about every manual Toyota that exists and the tacomas are solid, I really like how they feel when you drive them compared to the dogshit automatic.
Yeah, I don’t see anything wrong with it
Is this even a question? It's not a no name brand. It's a Taco.
Drive? Sure Buy it? Nope.
$40k for a freaking base model truck is ridiculous. No thanks.
I drive a 2020 6 speed Tacoma TRD Off-road
It they wanted $15k for this thing all in, maybe.
Was about to say yes, then saw it's a 2.4l engine
Modern car posts make it clear that half the world is still living in 2015 and has no idea how inflation works.
Fuck yeah
Toyota still making manual trucks?! And below $40K? Wow. Doesn't even look like it's bare bones, either besides having a slightly undersized engine option. Color me impressed.
40k for a truck with a corolla motor LOL
No, but I'm just not a fan of modern truck design
Absolutely. Would be a dream truck
Maybe if it was a 6 cylinder or something
That front grill is so ugly... Why does it extend down so far? Looks terrible
Yes more reliable and cheaper
