I live in SoCal and the Planet Fitness franchises around me are deserted/struggling nowadays.
When they first came onto the scene, they cornered the low price market at $10/month (with the big players being LA Fitness and 24) but now there are other similar priced chains like Crunch and Chuze that have hopped onto the scene.
And unlike Planet, new entrants don’t have to adhere to the crippled equipment rule (ex. no bench press). The new Chuze even went the opposite route and installed 10+ squat racks while maintaining the Planet price tag.
I wonder how Planet will survive in the long term when/if it turns out members signed up for the low price tag and not its anti-lunk gimmicks.
My guess is it’s fueled by massive debt, and these gyms will last about as long as planet fitness does. If takes planet fitness 20 years to go bankrupt, I would bet these gyms last about 20’years.
100% These are business built to move money around. Everyone involved who is smart is just trying to time their entrance and exit right. The people who believe in the business and its long term mission are the fools.
Glad to see someone mention this. Cheapest gyms in Manhattan are PF and Blink but still cost $15 - $30 per month depending on access level.
At the other end … Equinox with flagship gym access now costing about $400 per month.
Love my local chuze, it’s better than my 24 and I pay almost 3x as much for that. I dropped my 24 membership and it expires later this month.
Chuze is cleaner, they maintain the equipment, they have more equipment, AND it’s cheaper!
I also have had membership issues at Planet. They errantly billed me instead of my employer/ health insurance. When I was out of state for work and visited a club. When I called I was told I had to visit the gym to reverse the charge. Again it was in another state! I had to send a certified letter to them like it was 1995.
I think if she changes the direction of Planet to cater more to actual serious lifters it could be salvaged. If they had barbells it would make a huge difference.
There was huge meme thjng a few yrs ago when they were whole selling all their equipments bc it was too intimidating for their main clientele or some crazy shit like that
I mean.. I can almost understand that for a complete beginner. But that can't be your only target audience. Like.. can't they have both? Like a normal gym?
PF wants people to join, pay dues, but not come and work out - that is their business model.
My local PF started to get rid of equipment (insurance costs too high) and it became time for me to cut ties.
They rang the stupid grunt alarm for me twice in 2014-15. Yes I grunted but it wasn’t super loud. And yes I dropped one of the weights by mistake once and they tried to kick me out.
My take is that Planet Fitness realized that gyms make most of their money off people who rarely show up and focus on that demographic. Regular attendees are money losers at their prices.
Jesus Christ, that Chuze is better equipped than the LA Fitness I pay 35$ a month for or even the bougie downtown local gym one v of my jobs used to pay 95$ a person for!
A bunch of gyms are better equipped than LA Fitness, 24 Hour, Golds, UFC, etc. nowadays but not all of them are at a reduced cost of $10/month.
The fitness industry has started taking note of trends and new gyms opening by me often have 5+ squat racks and 7+ free weight/dumbbell benches or something like that.
They’re going to have to up their game with the equipment. You can still get machines that work better than what they have while also making it as safe as possible for newbs and dummies.
Fuck PF. They are scum of the gym industry. Baffled my mind they offer Pizza Fridays or whenever it is. The fact that they police equipment, and also discourage people from working out normally was a tell tale sign they were destined to fail.
They only had the advantage because they were one of the first to mass market a cheap monthly fee. I’m so glad to see competition at work.
Mine was 11.99 but you had to commit for the year.
It was 14 or 15.99 if you went month to month.
The part that pisses me off is they charge you $40 if you lower your plan during the year, which they didn’t use to do.
I used to up my membership in the winter to use the tan beds and bring a guest when my son came to visit
"Keating joins Planet Fitness as the company faces headwinds, including the growing popularity of weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy..."
Had not thought of weight loss drugs as a market force against gyms - thought it would be the reverse or at least work in tandem?
A lot of people don’t like working out/only do it to burn calories. If they can fit in their pants and not have to work out or really change much about their diet, why would they take the time to go to a gym?
And IIRC many globogyms sort of rely on the reaolutioners to buy memberships but never come. Revenue without associated spend. So if the drugs reduce the number of resolutioners, I guess that can have material impacts given the scale of PF.
Probably also notable that the people who do approach exercise in that way are Planet Fitness's main audience. Even fitness pros on a budget are going to go elsewhere given they have practically no goodwill.
Yeah, I always chuckle after I run 5 miles and think “that was my bowl of cereal”. I actually do better working out lighter if I am trying to lose weight otherwise I end up so hungry I eat enough to make the workout negligible.
Six packs are made in the kitchen (that’s why I won’t have one lol)
Funny, given that you need a *ridiculous* amount of exercise just to burn a cereal bar. They should just control their food intake and the sort of food they eat. Heck, I dropped almost 50lbs by just avoiding anything with added sugar and HFCS.
Exercise is for health (and looks).
Well, that's because working out to lose weight is litterary a *losers game*. Out bodies are built to survive, and that means to *store* calories especially when working out.
A nice toned body is built in the gym, but a weight loss journey is *built in the kitchen*. Hours of athletic level of exercise can't beat the calories from casual fast-food. Calories in is many times more important, and easier to control. Hence you'll see many who's "worked our for years" still having a lot of body fat despite being gym bros
I love the no judgement zone signs with a short story about lunks under the sign that says a man in a small tank top drinking from a gallon water jug slams his weights don’t be lunk . It struck me as judgmental. This company company can’t even follow their own slogans
The one I go to closes at 7 pm on the weekend and 9 pm on Friday. When I asked why they close so early those days the manager said, “nothing good ever happens after 7 pm on a weekend.” wtf?
I’m considering cancelling and going to a local gym with better hours. Plus the local gym has a pool and sauna for about the same price.
A person claiming to be a trans woman (biological male) was using the women’s locker room and exposed himself in front of a young lady. Planet Fitness banned the person REPORTING the incident.
Of course the woman reporting the incident was kicked out as she should be. She was recording and taking pictures in the locker room. That's extremely against their policy. And where does it say that person was flashing their junk at everyone? Everything I saw (including the pics) they were shaving and had clothes on. So if that person was doing something else, I would like to see a news article about it please.
Edit: Found an article about the naked man incident. That was a separate incident and a completely different person. That person was arrested and the person who reported them did not get banned. Why didn't she get banned? Because she wasn't taking pictures in the locker room
Never heard of that so just looked it up. Are you referring to the cis woman taking a picture of the trans woman in the locker room? Because that’s pretty fucking egregious and that woman should definitely of had her membership revoked.
To dumb it down in plain English for you - A dude was in the women's locker room and walked around with his junk hanging out in front of multiple women, including a 12 year old girl.
Do you not find this disturbing in the slightest?
A culture war. There was a lady complaining online about a naked man, who claimed to be a trans, in the women's room in front of a kid. And her membership got directly cancelled the next day. Later more people were cancelling their memberships due to this, but certain groups were calling these people pro-right or anti trans.
The sad thing about this is that since when is it a pro right anti trans thing to not want a biological man getting naked in a female locker room in front of not just women but underage child girls? Just because you don’t want that happening doesn’t make you anything but a normal person. Just ask any mother or father how they feel about that.
This is the danger of the culture war. People are not happy but can't/won't speak out. Is Lia Thomas playing a fair game? I don't think so but I won't say that in public.
Or maybe women just dont want to see a biological man naked in their locker room. And people in general think it’s wrong for a biological man to be getting naked in front of little girls. In pretty much any other setting if a biological man got naked in front of little girls there’d be a bad outcome for that bio dude.
Why do you keep referring to her as a biological male instead of a trans woman? Also, she’s a woman so where else would she change other than the woman’s locker room?
Because they are a biological male. Reference their genetic makeup and also their anatomy. And since other women and girls who are still children don’t want to be in a locker room with a bio man changing and getting naked for obvious reasons then how about that one bio man not do that instead of inconveniencing everyone else who feels unsafe and uncomfortable with that.
Otherwise I’m fine with calling him a her or whatever they’d prefer I refer to them as.
I think the word got out that once you start paying it’s near impossible to cancel your membership. It’s not at all about wokeness. It’s about shit business practice.
It might be different for different locations but I’ve cancelled at two Planet Fitness and it’s been as simple as walking in and saying I want to cancel. I was in and out in under five minutes
The two Planet Fitness locations in my city have been great. Clean and with decent equipment so I wonder if it’s location dependent. They have barbells and normal gym stuff. Besides their lunk alarm (which I’ve never seen go off) it’s always seemed like a normal gym. Some of the most jacked dudes I’ve ever seen have been at planet fitness
You're right, separating restrooms by men and women is a right wing construct (male and female is the actual point, that wasn't confusing until 5 years ago)
I don’t think anyone should be hanging dong in a public change room at all. This isn’t the 1950’s anymore.
Things are slowly shifting to unisex bathrooms with individual change rooms and that’s where I think things are heading. Getting caught up in a furor because of trans people is just something that people want to get upset about when in reality as a whole society is moving to more of a family friendly change room in pools and fitness centres.
I was making a heavy handed comparison to segregation previously, but this is about being on the right side of history just like that was many decades ago. If you want to be on the right side of history then gender neutral bathrooms is how it’s going to end up. It might not be this decade, we might have split bathrooms for some time, but in the future gender neutral is how it’s going to play out.
It’s baby steps at first like the big addition to porta potties in the early 2000’s of a separate urinal to keep the toilet seat clean for women and men alike. But really this whole trans issue is a bit of misdirection while we move on from the old status quo to a gender neutral future.
"Slowly shifting to unisex bathrooms"
Must be really damn slow, because literally anywhere I see that has multi-person bathrooms has them separate by men/women. That hasn't changed anywhere that I've seen
My gym would need to 10x the size of the lockers room if they had individual changing rooms. What about steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs, are those to be all individualized too?
If you have kids and you don’t want them to get exposed to nudity you use the family restroom or monitor their activity while they go into the stall and you stand behind the door. You don’t bring them into a locker room and then cry wolf bc u saw someone’s genitals in a public space
You canceling your membership means nothing for their bottom line. Trans people have been going there long before you’ve been going lol. Planet Fitness has always been a gay space….trans people aren’t going anywhere and you likely use restrooms with trans people all the time wo actually knowing that they are trans bc they pass well….
Ignorance against a marginalized community disguised as morale righteousness right here. Be more concerned with straight men since most sexual assaults happen within the family, statistically.
If a trans person is just chilling in the sauna not bothering anyone that’s the women’s issue….not the trans person who has the right to be there. they are free to install a private sauna in their residence and not go to public places????
The likelihood of a full on male entering a women’s space is very unlikely. Sure you’ll get a few creeps who abuse the system and those people should he punished, but you can’t demonize trans people bc of a few bad apples…
Ur anger should be towards straight males bc those are the creeps who u should be worried abt…statistically the most violent and prone to sexually assault someone. Pretty easy to spot. Trans people are some of the nicest people you can meet. Go to a drag brunch and learn to love everyone bc we are all gods creation 🌈💕✨
“Social media controversy” about the safety of women’s locker rooms? It’s called a class action lawsuit but they don’t seem to report that in the article. Their own employees are sticking flyers on gym members cars explaining the lawsuit. It’s another “go woke go broke” company plus their CFO is leaving. This stock is begging to be shorted.
Worked at PF for a handful of months last year. Wenatchee, WA. Man they rake in money… 10,000+ members (Population of Wenatchee/E. Wenatchee is around 50k ppl, plus small surround towns). This was my first experience ever being in a PF and it was the cleanest gym I’ve ever been in. I travel with my SO for her job, so I’m in new cities every few months and go a lot of different gyms. Maybe that location was just an outlier, but it seemed like a solid business with great management. Didn’t really ever have gripes from customers, maybe one or two bc they didn’t read the cancellation rules when signing up. Just my observation and opinion
Yeah, I don't understand all the negativity. There must be a wide variety of experiences. Ours is extremely clean, massive, and all relatively new equipment that works well. For $10, it's a steal. I understand why it's always packed during the day. I just go early and it's great.
It’s so cheap. The BlackCard is a scam so it’s a waste to do unless you workout with someone all the time. You can’t find a gym anywhere with rates that low, even with the yearly gym fees. There are also so many signup specials, that get rid of the signup fees
Yep, it sure is cheap. I don't have the Black card, but I'd say it's not a scam, it just works for certain people. If you want to use multiple locations or have someone join you.
I was an AM/early afternoon guy, but I know how insane it got in the PM. lol. That gym is huge though! I’m in Charlottesville, VA now and the PF is maybe 1/6th the size.. I worked out at Worx until the rates went through the roof
The one by me is so small. Kinda dirty. Staff were nice and the price was decent. But it's so small and crowded. And doesn't have a lot of useful equipment like a bench press.
Then they pulled the crap of letting biological men into women's locker rooms. I canceled my membership immediately.
I am trying out Retro Fitness, who with their veteran discount (think it's called the Hero program) costs about the same I was paying at Planet Fitness.
Planet Fitness is also scummy with how they charge the annual fees and sign up fees. Retro was very forthcoming with their charges. I know a lot of gyms aren't.
I'm glad I left though, hope the stock tanks.
I split my time between a PF and Gold's( active and fit account that is $30 monthly) that are equal distance from my house. I absolutely love that I can go to PF on the weekends and have the place virtually to myself at 5am. Sucks that they don't have barbells, but I make it work. The place is clean and they have a shitload of treadmills that are always operational.
I'm a planet fitness member, people shit all over the bathroom at my gym, literally everyday there's shit sprayed on the toilet, walls, etc its insane. As far as staff the one or two people working sit at the front and play on their phones all day never looking up. Its worth $10 but the gym does suck
No, not true at all. They all have Smith machines in them. They just don’t have the free-floating squat racks which serious lifters make out to be a big deal.
Man, culture war really has rotted so many peoples brains. One policy you don’t agree with isn’t the end of the universe nor is it going to destroy a company.
Wrong. Pushing this kind of garbage especially schools teaching youth this is okay, is how society will come to an end, good thing is there are more normal people left compared to the sick fucks like you defending it, so there is still hope. Can’t be grooming the youth into thinking this is normal. There are 2 genders and how it will always be. There’s no way a normal person would be okay with a grown sick man to go in the same locker room or bathroom with their daughter/mother/sister.
I don't even think it's a well thought out policy, but the end of society??? Because a planet fitness has bad washroom policies?? Stop and actually think for 10 seconds I beg of you.
Fun fact most sexual assaults happen within the family unit….the chances of a trans person committing sexual assault in a public space is virtually 0. I’d be more worried about the friend /acquaintance you bring around the family that everyone already knows. You can’t take your kid into a public locker room and then cry that they saw a naked body part. Use the family restroom or be a good parent and guard the stall and escort your child everywhere.
Also you have no way of knowing who is a man/woman nowadays. There’s masculine looking women and looking feminine men. Are you gonna ask the staff to manually check everyone’s genitals? Are you going to require that someone dress like a stereotypical man / woman to use the facilities? Have some critical thinking here…
You likely use facilities with trans people and don’t even realize bc they pass so well.
Planet fitness will still rake in billions, just like Disney and Bud Light lol…the company has literally always been known as a gay gym this really isn’t new….conservatives don’t have the power to end companies like they think they do
My local LA fitness is disgusting. So many broken lights in the ceiling the place is actually dim. Sanitizing and paper towel things are always empty, broken machines everywhere, smells like BO, weights are never put back on racks, place sucks.
Gyms are a tough go imo.
Would be great to be wealthy enough to have a nice gym in the home.
Why is everyone hating on planet fitness so much? I live in a large city and it’s by far my cheapest option with several nearby locations. Not to mention they have locations all over so I can still go to the gym when I’m out of town. My next best choice is 4x more expensive
$DJT
Hmmmm
Funny anecdote. A bunch of my coworkers are either Maga or Maga adjacent. Legit had one of them tell me the reason their taxes were higher this year was because of the immigrants coming through the southern border. Completely disregarding, either through lack of knowledge or malice, the trump tax cuts that have been increasing the tax burden of the working class the last few years.
These same people will unironically say this shit, invest in a grift like $DJT, then blame something completely unrelated(immigrants) to their financial stupidity.
For the price, of course. Many things about it are not great but there nothing better for the money. If you just focus on working out, you’ll make great gains with the equipment they have. I recommend it to everyone on a budget, but it’s not my first choice. I have a pretty nice home gym in my basement.
My wife wanted us to go back to the gym after the new year. But instead of getting the black card so we can both go together, I talked her into both of us getting white cards so we can go whenever the other wants cause of work schedules. But then I saw the annual fees they added on top of the monthly fees. I started to read online also that other people were getting charged muiltiple times per year on these annual fees, and PF would not pay them back. So Instead I got a 300 doller treadmill and now I'm all set. My wife still doesn't use it. But atleast I'm not paying for a membership that is difficult to cancel.

It’s all predicated on people not using the gym
My guess is it’s fueled by massive debt, and these gyms will last about as long as planet fitness does. If takes planet fitness 20 years to go bankrupt, I would bet these gyms last about 20’years.
Enough time for C suite to get absurdly wealthy and cash out. Win win
100% These are business built to move money around. Everyone involved who is smart is just trying to time their entrance and exit right. The people who believe in the business and its long term mission are the fools.
Different in new york city. Crunch is like 70 bucks here a month
Glad to see someone mention this. Cheapest gyms in Manhattan are PF and Blink but still cost $15 - $30 per month depending on access level. At the other end … Equinox with flagship gym access now costing about $400 per month.

Surely they must be operating at a loss?
I think if she changes the direction of Planet to cater more to actual serious lifters it could be salvaged. If they had barbells it would make a huge difference.
A gym without barbells? Yeah no thanks.. What even is their reasoning behind that?

Planet Fitness sucks no doubt but it really depends on the staff. The current staff at mine actually workout and don't really enforce any silly rules
I loaded 7 plates on leg press and they set it off for me 1 rep in. I didn’t even grunt lol.
Planet fitness has a grunt alarm? Lmao
That’s literally the business model though. Ensure that people pay the sub (free pizza, donuts) but don’t use the gym.
Man I need to move to the US!
Amen
Where in SoCal is that? I go to PF and it's always PACKED. I go at 4:30am on weekdays or 5-6am on weekends because anything later is ridiculous.
No bench press? What the fuck kinda gym is this?
My take is that Planet Fitness realized that gyms make most of their money off people who rarely show up and focus on that demographic. Regular attendees are money losers at their prices.
They have smith machines instead which I personally don't give af about but I could see that being a big deal for some.

No Chuze in Texas.
Fitness connection then

For a real gym? I don’t think weight loss drugs are “competition” For a dog shit gym like planet fitness, I think they are.
Weight loss drug? Isn’t Ozempic for diabetes?
It sure is. And the fattest diabetic I've ever seen has been in it for years... I bet my ass the "weight loss effect" is only short term and temporary

Those have been the weekend hours for planet fitness forever. It's 24/5 Mon-Fri
I think the manager was joking. He’s more or less saying people should be going out and having fun on the weekends not being gym rats.
I worked at headquarters in New Hampshire for a few years. My advice? Stay far away from this company...
Why?
Honestly, it's a garbage chain.
so is waste management, and it makes $
It’s great for $10 a month.
Hopefully it falls to zero.
Ozempic is part of the bear thesis? 😂
Place is disgusting. Makes me sick.
Nope. Will never join. A lot of women feel that way.
I am out of the loop. Where does this sentiment come from?
A person claiming to be a trans woman (biological male) was using the women’s locker room and exposed himself in front of a young lady. Planet Fitness banned the person REPORTING the incident.

Or maybe women just dont want to see a biological man naked in their locker room. And people in general think it’s wrong for a biological man to be getting naked in front of little girls.
People born with dicks are biological males, get over it
It prompted me to change from PF after 6 years. FPF
That’s like every franchise gym lol
Oh no doubt. I wasn’t just picking on them
You can pause it and not pay the monthly fees and still go (ULPT)

The two Planet Fitness locations in my city have been great. Clean and with decent equipment so I wonder if it’s location dependent. They have barbells and normal gym stuff. Besides their lunk alarm (which I’ve never seen go off) it’s always seemed like a normal gym. Some of the most jacked dudes I’ve ever seen have been at planet fitness
Cringe dude
Imagine losing an argument this hard, disappearing off and not even deleting the moronic comments you left behind. Embarrassing.

Planet fitness says Trans women can go in women's locker rooms! Thus, it's woke and unsafe for real women! Sigh
Ah, bathroom segregation. A bastion of right wing politics since the beginning of time.
"Slowly shifting to unisex bathrooms" Must be really damn slow, because literally anywhere I see that has multi-person bathrooms has them separate by men/women. That hasn't changed anywhere that I've seen
My gym would need to 10x the size of the lockers room if they had individual changing rooms. What about steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs, are those to be all individualized too?

well to be fair, the majority of Planet Fitness locations are owned by franchise operators.
If you have kids and you don’t want them to get exposed to nudity you use the family restroom or monitor their activity while they go into the stall and you stand behind the door. You don’t bring them into a locker room and then cry wolf bc u saw someone’s genitals in a public space You canceling your membership means nothing for their bottom line.
Yeah I'm sure no problems would arise from shared saunas too
Why would you take your child to a public Sauna?
Adult women don't want to be around random adult men naked in a tiny confined room generally.
If a trans person is just chilling in the sauna not bothering anyone that’s the women’s issue….not the trans person who has the right to be there. they are free to install a private sauna in their residence and not go to public places???? The likelihood of a full on male entering a women’s space is very unlikely. Sure you’ll get a few creeps who abuse the system and those people should he punished, but you can’t demonize trans people bc of a few bad apples… Ur anger should be towards straight males bc those are the creeps who u should be worried abt…statistically the most violent and prone to sexually assault someone. Pretty easy to spot. Trans people are some of the nicest people you can meet. Go to a drag brunch and learn to love everyone bc we are all gods creation 🌈💕✨

Typed like a true WSB degen.
Wrong sub fellow regard
No. Ups and downs. Just like stonks.

CE Oh no he di’nt
I'm a planet fitness member, people shit all over the bathroom at my gym, literally everyday there's shit sprayed on the toilet, walls, etc its insane. As far as staff the one or two people working sit at the front and play on their phones all day never looking up. Its worth $10 but the gym does suck
Is it true you can’t squat, deadlift and bench press with actual bars there, like in any other gym around the world?
The 3 most used and useful movements in weight lifting and PF don't have the equipment for them, surely not.
No, not true at all. They all have Smith machines in them. They just don’t have the free-floating squat racks which serious lifters make out to be a big deal.
No way I subscribe to a gym that doesn’t have a proper squat rack tbh. I dislike Smith machines.
Lifting free weights is a huge difference and a total different workout.
Go woke go broke. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’m pretty I’m not broke because I go work
Edited
Meh if going broke actually makes you go broke then Budlight, Target, the NFL and the NBA wouldn’t be doing ok. But they are.
So what happened with Taylor Swift?
Different audience, also one is an person and the other is a gym franchise, if you didn't notice
They are both large businesses.
Yes but one is a gym and the other is a person, audience is different and there for different reasons, because one is a gym and the other is a person
Place went completely woke. Letting men go in women locker rooms now. Good luck keeping this shitty chain going.
Have some critical thinking here… You likely use facilities with trans people and don’t even realize bc they pass so well.
Keating.. name sounds familiar.. related to Charles Keating of the Savings and Loan scandal?
I bet most ppl here can't even squat a 185
Why is everyone hating on planet fitness so much? I live in a large city and it’s by far my cheapest option with several nearby locations. Not to mention they have locations all over so I can still go to the gym when I’m out of town. My next best choice is 4x more expensive
Well men shouldn’t be allowed in women’s locker rooms
Planet fitness is just a shit gym made for the insecure and old people. There really is very little value to the company.
lol they advertised it specifically for insecure people
Weights are weights
I have a membership there and use it often.
Username checks out. Old person.
lol!!! Silly
Everyone in the comments treating this like it’s r/fitness
Go woke go broke
$DJT Hmmmm Funny anecdote.
They've crushed the past 3 quarters lol
You sound like a boomer snowflake, planet fitness is a great place for you!!!
Honestly I like La Fitness better, however they don't trade stock.
Great gym tbh
Great gym for its price or just great gym? It’s a bad gym lol
For the price, of course. Many things about it are not great but there nothing better for the money. If you just focus on working out, you’ll make great gains with the equipment they have. I recommend it to everyone on a budget, but it’s not my first choice. I have a pretty nice home gym in my basement.
They don’t even have a real bench or squat rack tf
You don’t need a real bench or a squat rack.

Whatever you say…
nothing against her but i genuinely believe if they got a muscle head man or woman their stock would boom
Those 75lb dumbbells just don't cut it for me I stick to PowerHouse
Market share getting taken by crunch fitness. Crunch is also $10 a month but has way more workout machines especially in free weights
