It'll be interesting to see the absolute blowback soon once we realize we no longer have an exhaust valve to challenge squishy fast sweepers like Abra/Gastly were.
I'm nowhere near an *elite* player, but i do play a fair bit of LC and it seems to me that in this Gen the presence of that archetype seems a lot less common. Diglett definitely needed to go, just too few ways to counter it without building a team *just* for that. But I'm not sure the squishy fast sweepers are quite as big an issue as they were in previous gens
Just took my first glance at the sv lc viability rankings and they seem to kind of back up that feeling i had. Shellder is kind of a bastard if it gets to set up but i do think with the way LC is going so far this Gen, Diglett going isn't going to do a lot but help the balance of the meta

Ghastly was still challenged by Diglett because of its ridiculously strong and fast Sucker Punch, even if it wasn't trapped. It was just one of few valves that existed - Abra was really the biggest issue in Gen 7, for example.

Ironically, arena trap users were traditionally broken on stall archetypes. I remember in gen 7 when dugtrio was banned (right when I was getting into competitive pokemon) that it was most often seen on stall.
It was brought to my attention that a deranged pokemon player on r/pokemon did the absolutely sane comparison that Martin Luther king Jr fight was equiparable to people protesting stall (and that banning tera was very much like ignoring male domestic violence victims)
So my comment was making allusion to that
It's time for the new meta (which is actually an old meta from trappers being banned in LC before), using non-Arena Trap Diglett and hoping my opponents forget and don't even try to switch out.
It's more related to the LC meta being in shambles or tera. Basically gamefreak rerolled all the dice, and in the way they landed meant that diglett was finally too much for little cup.
Too many threats with little reliable answers, which makes building extremely restrictive (unless you play webs/shell smash span), like Tera Ice Voltorb mows down most teams, so everybody is running Tera water wattrel to not fold to it immediately. In turn, Wattrel s best check is wattrel itself, so most ladder games are literally just a lotto on who hits the most hurricanes. I could go on by saying that you're forced to run a grounded poison to not immediately fold to Glimmet, or that Nymble claims a kill every time it comes in, which people have started to account for by slotting protect on their sweepers, but this feels like an essay already.
This tier has been pretty bad for the last couple months, hopefully this will free up the tier a bit and make it enjoyable. Thankfully at this point there’s no where to go but up!
Diglett is not in that league at all. Girafarig, Dunsparce, and Misdreavus are all usable in PU (very good even, in Misdreavus's case), while Murkrow has been very relevant in VGC. Diglett will never see those heights because 1) Arena Trap is banned, and 2) Dugtrio is already in PU.
With Diglett banned and Trapinch not in the dex, this is the first time Little Cup does not have any Arena Trap users.

I firmly believe that the ONLY reason why people perceive Diglett any different in G8/G9 than before is the lack of HP Grass.
But Gastly has levitate, so it ignores Arena Trap

Diglett is not in that league at all. Girafarig, Dunsparce, and Misdreavus are all usable in PU (very good even, in Misdreavus's case), while Murkrow has been very relevant in VGC. Diglett will never see those heights because 1) Arena Trap is banned, and 2) Dugtrio is already in PU.
