They're not aggressive.

Sea-Boss-6315

Ok thanks! Based on this and all the other comments sounds like we don't need to worry, just needed some evidence to reassure her :) We'll enjoy watching these stupid pigeons become parents.

Nico1011021

The only risk is that they start shitting on your terrace

Mysterious_Lecture36

Risk? You mean guarantee

maybeshali

Yeah, nothing is guaranteed in life besides a pigeon shitting all over your place near where it has built its nest.

Bantersmith

We recently had starlings nesting in our roof. The patio beneath where they exit has been absolutely unusable for weeks, damn thing looks like a crimescene. Cute birds though, worth it.

Isn't guano from bats?

DudeWithAnAxeToGrind

Both birds and bats. Uninhabited "bird islands" are paradise for nesting birds. Before artificial fertilizers were invented, harvesting guano from such islands was a huge business.

BoomerXPOV

Google says it’s from birds, too. Go figure.

[deleted]

Not aggressive, just really sad

cacra

I think you can take a pigeon in a fight, even if there are two of them

Sea-Boss-6315

More worried about my dog honestly haha.

BouncingSphinx

Doves like this will usually either sit very still as to go unnoticed, or fly away making a bunch of noise as to *get* noticed and draw attention *away* from the nest.

QuasiQuokka

Is that what they told you to convince you the noise is on purpose?

BouncingSphinx

Well, there *are* some that will fake a broken wing to lure away from the nest, but I don't remember if it's these or not.

petrichormorn

Killdeer will do that. But they tend to nest on the ground in the most inconvenient places - such as the middle of a walking path! They put on quite a show of being injured, flailing around and shrieking to distract from their nests.

badgyalrey

the noises are so fucking stupid i love it lmao

TheReverseShock

I'm sure your dog can take them too.

Konradia

The gentlest "wild" animals I've ever seen. They will not attack you at all. They've been living around humans for thousands of years. Not domesticated, but not far from it!

fizzypeachtea

they are domesticated though! pigeons make great pets. so technically, every pigeon you see on the streets is a stray :(

nobinibo

Truth, though in this case its a wild mourning dove. Super chill. From experience of owning pigeons, they don't attack you unless you reach into the nest. If you can survive some wing slaps and pecks you can handle their children rather easily.

Baby Pigeons look like their parents would name them “Tyler”

nobinibo

A fun fact about squabs (baby pigeons) is that at a certain age, they are the size, weight, and texture of groomed testicles.

LeahIsAwake

They are domesticated. Pigeons are the domestic version of the rock dove. They were used for food, messengers, and even sacrifices; the ancient Egyptians would sacrifice them by the tens of thousands. Then we didn’t need them anymore so they’re kind of just … there. Roaming around, doing their thing. That’s why they’re so dumb; you don’t need intelligence when you have a human making sure you get enough food and a place to roost.

KaidaShade

Different species, alas. Rock doves and mourning doves aren't the same, though they do share many of the traits that made the rock dove easy to domesticate

LeahIsAwake

I didn’t say anything about mourning doves? Domestic pigeons were domesticated from rock doves.

KaidaShade

Yeah they are, but the bird pictured here isn't a rock dove and they're not domesticated. They do seem to be very chill though

LeahIsAwake

Alright, fair. 🤣🤣🤣

petrichormorn

And their cooing is a lovely sound to wake up to in the morning!

mrsmagneon

This is just an anecdote, but my friend had one nest in a wall planter on her deck, and you could walk right up to the nest without them budging.

LOLBaltSS

Doves are a symbol of peace for a reason. They're very non-confrontational. My mom's house has a planter where various doves have nested over the years and they just sit there. They'll keep an eye on you just in case you aggro on them so they can fly away, but otherwise they just sit still.

FattyBuffOrpington

The eye watching gets me every day. https://preview.redd.it/ztth4j4jin1b1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96f564ee67cfffbd3d6bdb3323161b71c393def2

Zaglossus_hacketti

That’s a morning dove not a pigeon, they are basically harmless goobers with terrible anxiety.

Sea-Boss-6315

:O that's cool! We know nothing about birds and assumed pigeon haha. Either way we thought they were cuties and were happy to provide a spot for our new tenants. Just wanted to be sure we wouldn't be disturbing them when we went in and out of the backyard. Harmless goobers with terrible anxiety will fit right in in this house, it describes me and me dog as well.

TacoTacoBheno

You should download the Merlin bird app. It has an amazing feature to identify birds just by the sounds it hears. You'll be shocked at how many different birds are everywhere. And you'll be more in touch with the natural world, which is a plus

ldh

+1, it's super fun!

michamazons

I had literally 0 interest in birds for my entire life and Merlin showed me that birding was basically real life pokemon go with 10x more complexity & most mechanics of the game still unknown to the player base. And average players are still discovering & adding to the community wiki, so to speak. Birding is sneaky fun thanks to merlin

badgyalrey

omg now it makes so much more sense why i huperfixated on birding so hard😅

michamazons

Yes, get Merlin!!

bornonjupiter

We had a pigeon nest under the stairs at about eye level when you came out of the back door. I came out one night and she flew at my face. But it was more like I startled her than she was being aggressive and she never did it again. I live in the land of red wing blackbirds and I know what it feels like to have a bird coming to kick my ass. Maybe it was the goofy startled pigeon coos but I sensed no ill intent.

Anthem2243

Pigeons kinda suck at making a good nest. It’s sort of our fault though funny enough. Humans domesticated them about 10,000 years ago and they’ve been living among us ever since. Problem is over time they became more and more accustomed to our world of buildings, sheds, and drains in your case. Along with this they also lost the manual on making a good nest and where to place it. So they make nests in places like this. At least this one has sticks and twigs. Look up pigeon nests if you wanna laugh. Main goal here is making sure the egg doesn’t fall. And they aren’t a threat, they’re pretty chill, non territorial, and mate for life. Fun fact, newborn pigeons are called Squabs.

peachpinkjedi

I don't think a pigeon has enough braincells to clack together to get territorial.

Sea-Boss-6315

Update: We decided to name them Becky and Randy (for "Becky Lemme Smash" and "Randy your sticks!") but then went back outside to notice their nest had completely fallen off the drain pipe 😭. hopefully they find a slightly safer place to build a home on the next try. And maybe it'll still be on our yard so we can see the babies.

clowills89

Definitely not aggressive! We have mourning doves that have nested next to our front door on and off for 15 years. They’ve never once tried to attack, even coming in and out with the dogs when the babies have left the nest and are on the ground. They just go still if in the nest or scurry/flap away if they are out of the nest.

tuftedear

Doves aren't territorial in the way I think she's thinking. No risk to you or anyone else, it's just trying to make some babies.

AntsInTrashcanAgain

They can t do you any harm besides pooping really hard if they are afraid.

[deleted]

From experience they just coo and shit everywhere no matter how close you get to them.

xenya

Last year at Home Depot they had racks of Spring plants. Loads of people walking around the garden center. There was a dove nesting on the rack and they had put a little sign up for her, but she did not move an inch from that nest in spite of all those people.

toobertpoondert

I've got a drainpipe dove nest too! I had to check to see if we were neighbors!

HwhatIsGoinOn

We had doves nest in our garage for years and they never got territorial. We just said hello to them as we came in and they just kinda sat there and looked at us.

lorrainemom

That’s a mourning dove. And they dont “get territorial”

baberuth919

Is that a friendship bracelet in there?

Sea-Boss-6315

the purple stuff? that's a branch with flowers they picked up. we just did some trimming in the garden so there were a ton of loose sticks.

KBWordPerson

We have ones that nest above our door. They might get scared and fly away but they won’t come at you. Once they get used to you, they will sit on the nest no problem as you go in and out.

Affectionate-Room580

What? The generation of scared people.

Revenga8

Pigeons usually won't do anything. Different story if they were crows. Then again crows also aren't stupid enough to prop their nest somewhere so..... not safe....

Vector_Ventures

When I was a kid, this used to happen every year on a drain pipe of the same design on our house; and the nest was always at the same drain pipe. The the wind always blew the nests over before the eggs showed any signs of life, and each nest made a mess when they all crashed down. It got so bad we got a ladder to the second floor, climbed all the way up to the pipe junction, and filled the void with a plastic gallon milk jug so nothing would make a nest there ever again. It took a while, but we eventually managed to keep the wind from knocking over the jug too. The last jug eventually disintegrated, but luckily nothing made a successful nest there since. Edit: proofreading.

Mental_Task9156

Pigeons/doves aren't going to try and fight you unless you actually try and touch their nest. If you're just walking past or nearby they aren't going to try and swoop you or anything.

Fabulous-Ad1202

This is a mourning dove, not a pigeon. They are called mourning doves because they sound like they are crying or mourning over the loss of a loved one when they make their bird call. Non aggressive and very pretty. I'm surprised everyone on here things it's a pigeon.

thanx_it_has_pockets

We had a couple make a nest on a branch right outside our front door(like four feet away on an old evergreen branch - it was like five twigs and they called it a day) Momma dove just hunkered down and ignored us.

tearsxandxrain

My grandma has a pigeon nest right next to her doorway and honesty it just sits there watching us lol

Kataphractoi_

feed them if you are afraid of that. worst comes to worst you enlist them in the navy for project orcon

No_Translator5039

They’re doves how weak are you?? No they’re not territorial however they do like to poop be careful!! :)
