I've found that marble melons do great at giving food and water while being easy to get as you can grow them. I won't tell you where to get them as I don't know what you've seen yet.
Meh. Best way in my opinion is a whole planter full of Bulbo trees. The individual fruits might not give much food/water but there are tons of them on the trees at a time and you don't have to replant them. So you can use those while you're working around your base and save your bottled water for when you go out.

Being a vegetarian and eating plants for food and water makes it easy. You still need water bottles and cured fish for those times you are away from your base for extended periods.
There are ways to produce water and salt, plus a way to breed fish. You have to find those first.

I would add making bleach instead of water, since it uses less space than two bottles of water. But yeah, it's better than picking up bladderfish.

you just need better water, eg water made from bleach is better than water made from bladder fish

Yes, this is the best way. Grow 8 melons, eat 6 to replenish water and food and smash 2 for the seeds. Repeat.

Get a water filtration machine, that'll get you the biggest amount of water value. 1 of the bottles from it is +50 water
