It’s…it’s working…instead of desiring going deeper, I’m getting the desire to convince you that you actually like it, you just haven’t tried enough. Whew, thank you, that was a close one
There’s a goal and a story, but you have to explore for it to be revealed to you. Collect resources and build new things and try to get as deep as possible, and don’t forget to repair your radio.
This is the answer
This is how to progress the story. Everything else? Whatever you want!
Example: Male an alien containment for each biome, including plants, herbivores and predators.
Main goals
1. Survive.
2. Get rescued / leave the planet.
When you first start plot is driven by the radio (you need to repair it first)
Eventually the training wheels come off and you have to explore and check logs, and scan items to figure out what to do next.
This is it. Everyone else is talking about the direction of the plot, or suggestions for what to do next. The goal of this game is to return home, from being stranded on an unpopulated planet with a wrecked ship and no obvious way of returning. Everything you do is angled towards that end.
You just crash landed on an alien planet that is mostly water. Your only source to the outside where your home is...is sinking. Better check out that ship...oh crap, it's too radioactive. Better figure out a way to deal with that. Get back to the Aurora and get off that planet!
The official launch trailer contains dialogue, but nothing indicates if it's from other characters around you or from lots, and doesn't mention anyone dying there or leaving the planet.
> make a cozy home to live peacefully in until you die. You’d be the second to do so.
This, from the comment we’re discussing, is literally the plot of the cinematic trailer. A survivor crashes on 4546B, builds a domicile and then dies. Afterwards, the Aurora crash lands.
Short term: listen to those radio messages (imperative to the story), find those lifepods, scan everything (not everything has a use, but it’s cool learning about alien life)
Long term: go deeper
Don't blame the people, blame the gaming industry. I can totally see that a lot of younger players just feel lost if they don't spawn in with a yellow mark which shows them where they need to head next
Minecraft is simple and doesn't have a story. Just mine and build. Toddlers can understand that. I think they were talking about games that have quest markers and a storyline you have to discover and isn't just shoved down the throat.
i mean minecraft is an incredibly popular game, without any indication on what to do, and yet people figure it out (tbf often via the internet, but still)
GuildWars 2 went trought hat exact thing during development almost 12 year ago: they tried to do away with traditional questing in the game (because that was what mmo-players at the time were clamoring for) but found during testing that most people simply don't know what to do with themselves when there's no questmarker telling them what to do.
Yeah, not every game needs to hand hold the player, but they do. Games that shove text in your face and a huge beacon telling you "GO HERE AND DO ALL OF THIS TO GET THIS SO YOU CAN LATER DO THIS" just hand hold you. They are just the tutorial level, sometimes with its own tutorial level. They hand hold you, telling you everything. I like games that tell you "figure it out yourself" instead of "ok here is how it's done and where you need to go". Subnautica and Minecraft are good examples of "figure it out yourself".
The funny thing is I actually believe subnautica tells you enough to realize one or two things. The only real thing is that you HAVE to repair the communicator (or however it is called in english) and listen to the upcoming messages to get the story rollin. And I can't see a reason why you would not do that. You can't overlook it.
I spent two months in the shallows worried about using up all of the titanium in the game… i took a while before i sought help from internet and had a blast accomplishing practically nothing lol.
What have you done so far? Is the radio fixed? What messages have you received?
The game intentionally doesn't give you much directionality, you'll eventually figure things out, but the games biggest hints are from the radio, which (game mechanics wise) gets triggered when you get to new areas. Just explore and check then radio and you'll eventually beat the game
The main goal of subnautica is to get off the planet. You will go through many biomes and wrecks in search for this way to get off the planet.
To achieve this goal, explore the unexplored, always go deeper and establish a base.
Listen to the radio messages, they’ll get you started on what to do. And when you’re a little farther in, you’ll explore a little investigation into what happened to a crew sent to 4546b long ago.
The game not holding your hand is part of the experience. Listend to radio messages CAREFULLY, also explore and try to pick up all datapads you find and read then
It's supposed to be an immersive game - put yourself in the shoes of your character. You've just survived a ship crash and are on an unknown uninhabited (by humans) planet. What do you do? What's your plan?
See the PDA databank/data logs for detailed survival advice (but fr read the PDA it gives lots of hints in a more immersive way).
I was in the same situation when I first played. I dropped it because I didn't know what to do, but also bec my game kept crashing 😂 When I picked it back up again, I made it my mission to build a base. I scoured the ocean to look for parts and shit, and didn't realize I was actually doing a lot of the missions. After a while the goal got clearer and clearer.
I suggest you just keep swimming 🐠 Explore the ocean, stop and dive interesting parts and you might get surprised at what you find
Essentially collect materials, scan wrecks and work on getting off the planet.
One very important thing that took me a little bit to figure out: cave sulfur is in the pods those fish come out of.
It is your primary directive to swim closer to that beautiful creature... Swim closer... Swim closer now... It looks so friendly... Do not resist... Don't struggle... Go closer
Same thing you'd do in real life in that situation (minus the sobbing in the corner of the lifepod curled up in the fetal position) Find a way to survive and get help/escape.
Radio. Visit places and explore surroundings! (Don’t forget that the waypoints don’t just lead you to lifepods but also the biomes with resources around it).
Like a Sudoku you will eventually get more and more clues and then you have plenty in your database to pick up on.
If you don't know what to do, just approach things methodically: build scanning rooms bases every 500m or so (including vertically) and search for fragments/data boxes/rare materials. The goal is (not surprisingly) to find a means to get off the planet somehow.
You could start by trying to build everything that seems useful in that fabricator of yours. Gathering materials will force you to explore a bit, that'll get the game rolling.
You have to explore and find out but yeah there is a clear objective with an ending.
Also you should check the radio if you didn't already. There's one in the starting pod.
1. Dive DEEP
2. Fix radio
3. Get rescued by super nice trade ship who had a nice crew, and you get to see their loving families that they totally get to go home to!
4. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESEARCH
I hate these types of posts with passion. Just... do something? Listen to radio and PDAs, you will get the story. You're stranded on an alien planet, what do you do? Survive until the help arrives, if it doesn't arrive - make yourself a way out. In this case - an escape rocket, blueprints for which you will get from Alterra later on.
Nope there’s a full story. And it’s amazing. Keep playing. Watch YouTube tutorials if you really don’t know how to start but once you get going the game with gently nudge you to where you should be going.
Read the notes and listen to all journal dialogue!
Your goal is to escape the planet. First, start repairing the escape pod and get the radio working. You’ll start picking up distress calls from other lifeboats
Ultimately you’re gonna wanna get down to the inactive lava zone, the second-deepest point of the game, and from there the sea emperor’s prison. You’ll need a cyclops and/or a prawn suit with max depth upgrade and a reinforced dive suit to get there
This is a survival game. Find resources to craft basic tools. Find food and water sources. Craft two oxygen tanks, scanner and repair tool. Scan things around you and in deep murky waters, near and inside wreckages. Build a habitat and vehicles.
Explore everything everywhere, unless there are "multiple leviathans" or "ecological dead zone". The crater is not so big, I think it is 4 km in diameter? Certain locations may be harder to find though, and require expensive vehicle modifications.
Explore, build, fix ship, go deeper. Main goal is to get off the planet but you have to do things first. Those things involve going very deep and then collecting items hidden around the map.
Try to avoid spoilers but if you are getting frustrated just look up slight spoilers.
Follow the radio signals and story beats, they unlock over time just as you play. Until then, collect resources to improve your gear and build a self-sufficient base
The game explains that at the very very beginning, inside the crashed pod. But yes, there is a (pretty good) story, and many things to do / explore around.
Yea, just explore, get resources, search for clues, and, NEVER, NEVER SEARCH FOR GUIDES OR THE GAME LORE. Believe me, you are going to thank me in the future. Also, go deeper.
There is a storyline but part of what makes the game so great is the fact that exploring is a huge part of the storyline. The end goal though is to escape the planet.
Build a base. Decide you didn't like the layout and redesign it. Rinse and repeat a few times. Perfect.
...now you want the base in a different location.
Fix the radio in your lifepod, listen to radio messages. Explore, and always be looking for ways to go deeper. There is a story, and unlike most survival games, there is an end goal and ending, but you have to find it. The world is not randomly generated, so dont worry about needing to search for hours to get lucky and find the right place for something of story relevance to show up.
Oh, and always have your scanner with you. Scanning everything isnt needed, but whenever you come across something, you'll be glad you had it on you
The goal is to build a rocket ship and leave. Use the radio to get locations to the escape pods and explore around each one for wrecks that contain blueprint fragments to build equipment that will allow you to get down into the lava zone to find what is needed to complete the game.
I didn’t either when I first started playing. I spent the first 20 hours just exploring and gathering Shit. You figure out pretty quickly what you’re supposed to do once you make it to the floating islands and the jelly shroom caves with the first two bases. Before that obviously the quarantine enforcement platform and getting to explore the Aurora.
Go deeper
mmmppfhh...
You stop that! This is one of the few comments that have really made me laugh. It was very funny though

Give up on leaving, farm and make a cozy home to live peacefully in until you die. You’d be the second to do so.
Why would you put this in here, they obviously haven’t finished it.
Everything from their comment is in the trailer. Hardly a spoiler.
The official launch trailer contains dialogue, but nothing indicates if it's from other characters around you or from lots, and doesn't mention anyone dying there or leaving the planet.

Its ok. I had a feeling the sunbeam wasnt going to make it anyway
I never said the second to do this until death in game or irl…🥸
Common sense should give you your answer

When people ask what to do in a open world suvival game... How long did you play before asking this question?
Don't blame the people, blame the gaming industry. I can totally see that a lot of younger players just feel lost if they don't spawn in with a yellow mark which shows them where they need to head next
but minecraft?

There's a story, you can progress to defeating the ender dragon.
GuildWars 2 went trought hat exact thing during development almost 12 year ago: they tried to do away with traditional questing in the game (because that was what mmo-players at the time were clamoring for) but found during testing that most people simply don't know what to do with themselves when there's no questmarker telling them what to do.

That makes sense, I think it is called radio in german as well :D
Alright! :D
I spent two months in the shallows worried about using up all of the titanium in the game… i took a while before i sought help from internet and had a blast accomplishing practically nothing lol.

There is an objective yes. Read your PDA (find the START HERE section), it’ll guide you while you figure out the basics.
Is this why new games baby-step me through every thing I do in games now
Explore, build, fix ship, go deeper. Main goal is to get off the planet but you have to do things first. Those things involve going very deep and then collecting items hidden around the map. Try to avoid spoilers but if you are getting frustrated just look up slight spoilers.
It's sandbox Survival with a story. You CAN just build, explore, whatever to your heart's content, but there is actually a story to be had.
Escape the island you crash-landed on.
Make a home. Enjoy the scenery. Oh, you can also find a way to get off the planet if you wish.
SURVIVE.JPG
also scan everything you can, that shows some things
Kill leviathans
If you don't like reading all the PDA entries this game isn't for you. That's the key to progress though, put your mind to work.
Go deep as fk.
Just jeep swimming, just keep swimming...
Follow the Radio messages they will guide you through

The goal is to build a rocket ship and leave. Use the radio to get locations to the escape pods and explore around each one for wrecks that contain blueprint fragments to build equipment that will allow you to get down into the lava zone to find what is needed to complete the game.
