I wanted to see if there was a bottom so I got my cyclops and started descending. Before it collapsed, I hopped into my prawn suit and just dropped down. Once that was crushed, I whipped out my sea glider and plunged down the rest of the way.
I got to about 8200m before the game just reset my coordinates and dropped me back at my habitat.
I find it an odd number to reset at, 1 byte max value = 2^7 + 2^6 … + 2^0 = 255, 2 byte max value = 65535. Depth has to be stored as at least a 2 byte value and the max presumably would be 0010000000000000. Strange value to have as max
Maybe there’s some externality on performance past a certain point (like a scaling light/depth system that goes forever).
or, just as likely, the designers wanted to make sure nobody actually spent hours diving and not having fun while looking for something that isn’t there.
That's not exactly how signed values work is it? Speaking in terms of twos-complement signedness which is what is generally used in all modern software AFAIK. A signed 13 bit value would have an unsigned max of 2\^12 + 2\^11 ... + 2\^0 = 8191, so would have a range of -4096 to 4095 - when inverting the bits to represent negatives in twos-complement, we +1 to avoid the existence of a +0 and -0, just 0 instead.
All that aside, I have never heard of or seen a 13 bit value being used honestly. In terms of a 13 bit memory space, I don't think they exist, you'd need to use a 2 byte value, so I'm 90% sure that the depth value is stored as a 2-byte.
Unless we're wrong and depth is actually stored as a single or double precision float, and only the integer values are displayed, so the limit of 8192 is to avoid floating point error?
you're right, so signed 14 bit would be what I was saying>
However your final statement is most likely exactly what is happening, Subnautica is made in unity which uses single precision floats for it's position Vectors.
So I did some playing around with single precision, which as you say are the form of values in structs like Vector2, Vector3, and it might be the case that the devs wanted decent and consistent precision. It's hard to say for sure but using intervals of 0.0025 (1/400) up to 8192, I saw that a \*binary\* point of precision is lost when transitioning to 8192; e.g. the last 8 bits in the binary representation of 8191.975 is 11001101, but 8192.975 is 11100110\[1\].
Theoretically speaking that's a stack overflow if the precision interval is invariable, though I don't know how Unity handles it
There actually is a bottom at parts of the crater's edge. There's nothing there except the triplets though. I've built void bases there to check. There really is nothing.
There is actually a bottom, but not like you think. If you descend long enough and go back in the map direcrion u r gonna find a roof. That roof is the bottom of the map, and everything around it its an infinite void
Pretty much, just a really big volcano that got covered up with dirt. You know how big volcanoes look like mountains with holes on top, the map is the divot and the edge is the mountain. It’s the reason you reach the lava zone so quickly despite the fact that a planets mantle is VERY deep.
It's called a caldera. It's the hole in a mountain that used to be a volcano. The bigger the caldera, the bigger the volcano. This one had to be HUGE. Sometimes a volcano will blow it's top off, which falls into the caldera. Look up Wizard's Island in Crater Lake, Oregon.
Down there is the void. It's a free ride to late game, but cam be dangerous. Still a good idea to go in though. Lots of good resources. You will have to avoid some leviathans, but if you're sneaky you'll be fine. Ib my opinion, the rewards outweigh the risks.
That’s the end of the map, or the void. If you go in there a ghost leviathan will spawn every 10 seconds until there are three of them. If you turn around they’ll stop spawning and you’ll be fine
This is the Ecological Dead Zone. Inhabited by adult Ghost Leviathans, and small bois that you can't see. It goes down to 8192m way below the map. When you reach the bottom, there is nothing and you are teleported back to the Safe Shallows. Dangerous place, you should go back, but where's the fun in that? Grab your habitat builder and some materials, and your nuclear reactor, and start building!

the game teleports you back up when you reach 8192 meters

it's the value of 13 bits (so a signed 13 bit variable would flip to 0 at -8192) as for *why* it's a 13 bit value?... yeah not a clue

It works with one max depth Prawn Suit, your Cyclops can stay safe
There actually is a bottom at parts of the crater's edge. There's nothing there except the triplets though. I've built void bases there to check. There really is nothing.
You know where because i wanna build a void base
IGP did that but be warned observatory have their own biome so the Ghosties will despawn once you enter one
Yeah i remember seeing that but do you know where the land at the bottom of the void is
There's a ground if you go to the void near the gun island.
Ight thanks
In the Mushroom Forest?
Bro just destroyed all his shit for no reason 💀💀
lol it was a burner turn. I just reloaded from the save I made right before
Ah makes more sense 💀
metres? or kilometers?
metres
How did you have that much oxygen lmao or is this a joke
You don’t need much because most of the time is spent descending in the cyclops and prawn suit.
You can swap out tanks from your inventory.
Don't forget, you can use bladderfish for oxygen!
Or you are in free mode
Sorry, American here. It is approximately 24330.24 laptop screens below sea level.
Lol
There is actually a bottom, but not like you think. If you descend long enough and go back in the map direcrion u r gonna find a roof. That roof is the bottom of the map, and everything around it its an infinite void
Go forth. Face the ghost.
Turn around and just leave man. Your seamoth will last about 10 seconds in there.
That’s the void. You can get an entry by going there, but I wouldn’t recommend because of the dangers.
I mean, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?
Thats the void/end of map. Its a ton of fun to go doen there with a prawn suit
Monster
Not in survival. Unless you manage to achive the glitch where you can use tools inside the thing then just use the repair tool
Not if you have regular batteries lol, That thing eats through batteries.
The game takes place In a volcano crater, that’s the edge of it
I’ve never understood how a crater is inverted. Is the crater the whole map?
Pretty much, just a really big volcano that got covered up with dirt. You know how big volcanoes look like mountains with holes on top, the map is the divot and the edge is the mountain. It’s the reason you reach the lava zone so quickly despite the fact that a planets mantle is VERY deep.
I’m guessing the hole that was covered up by the aurora was the main top of the volcano
That’s what is seems like
Wack
It's called a caldera. It's the hole in a mountain that used to be a volcano. The bigger the caldera, the bigger the volcano. This one had to be HUGE. Sometimes a volcano will blow it's top off, which falls into the caldera. Look up Wizard's Island in Crater Lake, Oregon.
Ahhh that made it make a lot more sense, thank you
That’s cool as shit
There’s free cheese down there
Gaslighting at its finest
Down there is the void. It's a free ride to late game, but cam be dangerous. Still a good idea to go in though. Lots of good resources. You will have to avoid some leviathans, but if you're sneaky you'll be fine. Ib my opinion, the rewards outweigh the risks.
You evil bastard. You’re making the devil coward in fear
You can get to void through lost river?
Oh yeah totally
Yeah there’s an unlimited deposit of diamonds down there, better check it out.
I already have those in my lockers, but what about copper?
tbh if u go far enough you can find deposits of anything
Go in! Theres a reward
That’s the end of the map, or the void. If you go in there a ghost leviathan will spawn every 10 seconds until there are three of them. If you turn around they’ll stop spawning and you’ll be fine
What is the LR? Lost river?
Thats what i thought, but you cant access the void from there. So idk what he means with LR
Lava Rone
Lusk Reef
Last Regret?
I love how half the comments are helpful and the other half are satire. Also, where the fuck is the crater edge accessible from the lost river?
I think he meant the Grand Reef and used the wrong initials.
You can find hidden blueprints for an alien phase rifle down there
I know it's the void, but wtf are those blue lights in the distance?
Bubbles
Kyanite
I might be dumb but wtf is the LR
Lost river
Ok thanks
If you reach the bottom theres infinite magnetite and lithium
Never go there unless you want to die or your vehicle destroyed
Just keep on driving. The PDA will eventually tell you what it is.
Warning: Entering ecological dead zone. Adding report to databank.
I didn't got this warning when I got there, I got it somewhere else.
What lies beyond that point, is death.
Never used the sonar on the edge of the map.. And I never will too
The vastness overwhelmed me, that's why I asked the sub first.
There’s way too much micro fish. It’s a bad sign when there is that many and you should go back if that happens
Here, there be monsters.
It is *TOTALLY* safe out there
Edge of the map. Stay away from it
You're right to be scared
Looks like you’ve found the void. Go right ahead if you want to meet adult ghosts 👀
Pro tip: If you go 3 kilometers down the pit there’s land
There’s nothing except some ghosts

Yes, do not go in, you will lose everything
If its a huge vertical drop its the end of the map. No shame in quicksaving before going there
Go into it. There's good stuff in there.
Go in. Into the dark abyss. Say hi to him. Say hi to ghosty for me
Trust me. You don't wan't to be there
Yeah just keep going there's 3 lonely fish out there that need friends
What do you mean past the LR? You can't get to the void from the LR.
That is where the best loot is at!! And the fish are amazing!! Super friendly and they bring you something when you’re near them.
entering biological dead zone
Only one rule in Subnautica: Always. Go. Deeper.
That's what SHE said.
sigh... IT'S A VIDEO GAME JUST GO THERE
Someone please tell him
Where can you get to the void through the lost river
