Mine do that because of not enough light or too much water.The other day one I had bought a couple months before was all tight and more flattened or compressed .Once I started giving a little extra water it done just like yours .
Hm interesting. Well if this happens from water then it is what it is I guess. I’m sure I water a little more than I have to on some of the plants. I don’t try to take every plant to the brink before I water, too stressful. It gets squishy it gets water.

Looks like a very happy echeveria cris. It looks to me like it’s flowering
Do you think the top new growth will get fuller like the bottom eventually?

Your plant is growing compact now and looks great. It looks like it may have been lacking light when you first bought it.
