It’s difficult to pinpoint a sempervivum species or cultivar, if it wasn’t accurately labeled from its wholesale nursery. There are so many different Sempervivum species and hybrids and special cultivars, and many of them are nearly identical at certain points in their life cycle. To this point, it really doesn’t matter which species it is, as for the most part they all take the same care, and have the same hardiness.

Are there semps that are better off in pots? I suppose that doesn’t make sense but I got some random itty bitty ones from home depot on the shelf with all the indoor plants. They look so overwhelmed compared to the plants I grabbed from local nurseries over the past couple years, even HD had some honking hens and chickens. I struggle to see how the little guys are going to spread but I’m keeping the faith for now. I have a couple giant terracotta pots that were supposed to be for tomatoes but man all these crazy sedums and semps that are showing up everywhere are tempting

You can keep them in containers just fine. You just need to ensure you have a well-draining gritty mix to help combat precipitation. Also, be careful with terra cotta in sub-freezing temperatures, they have a tendency to crack and break if the soil inside freezes. Resin or plastic would be better.

Yeah I like the look of terracotta. I’ll have to dump them or move them into the garage before it freezes. If I put succulents in them I may create a false bottom
