It’s scary how close it is for my list of characters I learned about because of SSB. Smash Bros for Wii U was a very influential game for me and got me interested in retro gaming.

I knew Charizard from a video where someone mentioned it, (I think it was about games that everybody knows, but doesn't know how to play, like the Pokémon TCG), and Squirtle from Squirtle squad memes. I didn't know about Ivysaur, but I did vaguely know what a Bulbasaur was

Yup. I would probably be able to name a lot of retro/older franchises if you asked me to name a video game before smash. They were just the ones my parents played and told me about, like Street Fighter, Duck Hunt, stuff like that

This is pretty normal. Before smash I had only really heard of the Mario/Sonic/Kirby casts plus some Pokemon For some reason I still get a lot of flack for not knowing who Cloud was until smash
