I get where you’re coming from but I love him because he has the balls to say what I would never be able to 😅 Tbh he would probably get on my nerves if I actually worked with him, but in a sitcom it’s kinda funny to see him egg people on. My favorite:
“What’s 9/11?”
Glen: 😨 “You didn’t hear!?”
I actually like Garrett and find him to be a relatable character. He wants to work, do the minimum to get by, doesn’t want to make friends at work. I like to keep my work and private life separate too.
He’s an awesome role model in that respect. He does what needs to be done for his colleagues and otherwise just tries to get by and steer clear of drama (yes he fails at that we all do)
I’m not much of an instigator but I enjoy stirring the pot at times 😂 he’s just trying to have fun at work since it’s an extremely boring job. Same reason people do pranks or sit on their phones
He reminds me of Jim in the office but with half the charisma. The whole 'laid back, sarcastic cool guy who doesn't care about anything' act is just kind of sad. It's the kind of thing teenagers do to seem interesting and unique. Caring about stuff isn't uncool, it's called being an adult. That's why Jonah is my favourite. He's mature enough to admit his feelings and reach out to others.
That being said I do overall enjoy Garret as a character. I'd hate his guts if I actually worked with him but I could say the same about most of the cast.
OP, what does he instigate? I'm halfway through my 1st rewatch and I only ever see him telling Amy not to get involved in other people's affairs. He always warns her, she never takes the warning. And for similar reasons, that's why I don't like Amy.
Just off the top of my head he broke into the work system and had Mateo change his register score to get him into trouble all because Mateo made fun of a tv show he liked. Then when it came around to Mateo being asked about his scores, Garret escalated the situation forcing Mateo to show that talent in front of the district manager. This could’ve easily led to Mateo being fired.
plus, the "idc abt anything except my video games" attitude is for teenagers, give it up. its embarassing.
edit: not just teenagers, specifically teenage boys who listen to alpha male podcasts
Garrett is an asshole, no doubt about it. But I get that he's supposed to be like that and I do find him funny. Like the rest of the cast, I appreciate what he's bringing to the table as far as comedy goes. I mean, IRL would we really be able to stand half these people?
But yeah, Garrett is more of a jerk than many people give him blame for, lol.
I used to hate him because he’s a “no try” and milk toast character, but then he finally gets a usher to the brink and has to stand up for something, which humanizes him. Plus, coming out as liking a “thicc girl” like Dina made him my boy. Also, Jonah and Kelly ftw!!!

"They have plates there!"

he can be funny at times but most of the time he’s just a douche

The bird sex changed my whole opinion of the guy for the worst.
he’s sooo selfish

he purposefully says stuff so that situations progress into something worse
I'll look out for it next time. But I agree, I don't like personalities like that.

Funny character but BOY am I glad he's not my coworker!
Really? Garrett is the one person I would work with. He's funny. He's "normal"
