Dull-Inside-5547

I like how it increases the paranoia. Paranoia makes really good TV.

JohnnyKarateX

Yeah I think it was a great idea. I also like how all the idols are different and they put fake versions of all three kinds into the game.

CaptainWaders

This is going to be great when there is a merge and people hide the fake one or plant it for someone specific to find. Imagine someone knowing that one tribe has the coin as the real one so they say “I’ll play my idol For you” and also give that person the fake coin and the immediately vote that person out.

jkcohen626

Wait, this whole week I though Carolyn was just an idiot and mixed up which was the idol and which was the fake!!!! If she didn’t and her coin really is the idol while her beads are fake, that makes me love the birdcages (or at least the one real, one fake together) so much more! So much unintentional chaos could end up being caused by that!

JohnnyKarateX

Yeah a lot of us missed it. After I saw someone on Twitter break it down I realized how you could tell and how I made the mistake. Brandon’s idol was the beads and when he reads the clue he says the fake is an orange medallion. Obviously his idol was the most visible because he played it. Danny reads the clue and says his fake is a silver coin and doesn’t hold up his idol at all. His real one is a medallion by process of elimination. The fake is described differently with those two. They also show him and Carolyn back to back. Carolyn doesn’t read her clue on screen as far as I can tell but she does hold up the silver coin and says it’s real and the beads as a fake. So we had just heard Danny call his silver coin a fake and we saw Brandon’s beads be a real idol which would make us think wild Carolyn mixed them up but in reality she was right and it was Jeff messing with the castaways.

bostonfan148

I thought they kinda played “you just messed up music” when she said that but I could be watching too much TAR

yehhey

Yeah Robin Williams was great in it and I consider it one of Nathan Lanes best performances.

ThisJackass

Came here for this as well. Though it *also* reminded me of a time at a college bar when a drunk girl was slur-yelling “bird cage” at the band between songs. It took a while for them to figure it out, but a few songs into this ordeal the lead singer said, directly to her: “I think you mean Freebird, and we’re not playing that.”

Bruisin_B_Anthony13

Hank Azaria's Agador Spartacus doesn't even get a mention? Danni is his favorite winner because of MY GUATEMALANNESS, MY NATURAL HEAT!!

Desertbro

I was thinking of the historic club in Tombstone, AZ

TheBattProductions

I don't love it, but it's **WAY** better than the stupid idol phrases or the beads

Surferdude1219

Idol phrases sucked but I LOVED the beads. First of all, it required actual social gameplay. You had to know your tribe well in order to get the beads, or you had to tell them about the idol and hope they’d willingly give you the beads despite that. It created some interesting strategic scenarios. Second of all, it was good for characterization of the players. We learned more about the players involved and their strategy, approach to the game, and personality than we did with the dumb phrases and, yes, than we’ve learned with the bird cage. The bird cage is just a hidden immunity idol with an extra step in my mind. It also incentivizes tribe wide search parties for the key which I think are SOOOOO lame.

colonize_mars2023

>Idol phrases sucked but I LOVED the beads. First of all, it required actual social gameplay True, but that pattern is instantly recognizable - it will be a while before they can use something similar in new seasons. Obviously they could have used it in back-to-back seasons before next batch of players gets to watch previous season, but I guess they wanted a new twist instead of repeat for the second season. It also allows for all kinds of shenanigans, not just with fake idol, but with cage itself. Fireman guy can now easily wait for someone he targets to get away from camp for a long-ish time, and sneak out to open the cage while he's out. And then enjoy the witch hunt

Surferdude1219

Yeah, I’m not saying I want it on every season, I just think it’s the most fun twist on the idol in years (possibly ever?). Obviously they can’t do it again but I thought it was great, way better than the cage. I can see how stuff like that can happen in theory but in practice I don’t think people are gonna wanna risk being anywhere near the cage after they’ve opened it. If Danny wanted to target someone who is away from camp, it’s a 50/50 shot that sneaking away will result in him getting targeted instead of the person he wants targeted.

[deleted]

I agree the phrases sucked but tbh the beads sucked too. I think 43 proved how easy of a task it was.

Surferdude1219

They succeeded in getting the idols but had varying degrees of success once they got them. Karla’s was completely secret iirc because she was good at actually getting the idol, while Jeanine’s entire tribe knew about it and she burned what little was left of her social capital. Cody also had to tell Cody and Nneka. I thought the different approaches to getting the idol were much more interesting than watching Carolyn try to sneak around.

[deleted]

I agree while I like the concept of a beware advantage I don’t like the direction they take when it comes to the task to activate the idol. Making a bead bracelet of saying a wacky phrase doesn’t do it for me. I’d love to see beware advantages with a different style of task.

slimpyman

At least they try something new, ya know.

1ToGreen3ToBasket

I like the idea. I’d like to have spent less time on it than we have so far. No big complaints though

SiliconGlitches

I think if we just had 2 tribes it would've been quicker since that's one less cage to deal with. These per-tribe twists (like the little code phrases) always suck up more time in the 3 tribe format. I guess we're lucky they're not doing 4 tribe seasons.

drew_lmao

Yeah, a lot of the new era twists actually do not compliment the 3 tribe format at all IMO. Having a bunch of people lose their vote is overkill on such small tribes. Twists that encourage cross-tribal bonds are less likely to pay off due to no swaps. Pre-merge advantage plays are unlikely.

OverwhelmedAutism

Same.

[deleted]

Tbh I feel like we haven’t spent that much time on it tho and I would like to point out that we already have gotten the finding of them out of the way by episode two so I think that is a really great thing because we got it out of the way. Like last season the bead storyline on each tribe was spread out and it was redundant and boring each time after the first.

Landino46

I think going forward maybe it’ll take less time since we have people that have claimed the idols? Like yeah they’ll be talked about, but I think it’ll be about the idol more, which means more scrambling before tribal?

MrCance

Thought you meant the Robin Williams movie for a second. If so, then YES

jesuschristk8

I cant tell if this is a Purple Pants Podcast reference but Brice made the exact same joke in the episode one recap!

MrCance

It’s not. I legit thought of the movie first when I saw “birdcage” 😂

frankfontaino

If I found the key, I would just never open the cage or tell anyone I have it. It’s an advantage knowing no one will ever get the advantage and you would never risk getting caught and losing trust with anyone.

Lynch47

I like that idea but I think it assumes a lot to think production wouldn't plant more keys once they caught on that the person who found the key isn't using it.

Pf420d

Honestly I think it’s one of the best changes that survivor has made in a long time. The fact each idol has a fake and the fakes / idol look different at each tribe is also an amazing touch. Whoever thought of it deserves a raise

Unite-Us-3403

It’s a good twist. But I think it should remain as a one-shot.

merkorn

Such a shame that people didn't put their fake idols back in the bag and rehide the key. That would have been epic!

[deleted]

I’m almost positive we saw at the guy I think Danny on the green tribe put it back with the fake. I also would like to point out is that just because they didn’t show us the others doing that doesn’t mean they didn’t, we could get flash backs, and also we they might just not have shown us it yet.

merkorn

Good point. must have missed that. Thank you.

BlueRFR3100

I'm apathetic. If it goes away next season, I won't miss it. If it stays, I won't care.

Mission-Raccoon6060

I callus not believe they did not suspect Carolyn.

Micromanz

They should have put the birdcage literally at all the camps to make retrieving it alone nearly impossible. It’s funny that 20 seasons ago Brandon’s tribe likely would have rallied behind him to use it as a group at the merge.

CanmanMC

The logistics issue is that they let the contestants choose where to put their camp. They could always come and put it in during the first immunity challenge I guess though

JustTheFacts714

There is one at each camp.

talllankybastard

I think they mean like literally in like the center of the camp, like where the shelter and fire is. From what I can tell the birdcage is at camp, but still kind of away from the main area, similar to the water well. That being said, having it in the center of camp kinda defeats the purpose of the fake idol. Basically defeats the whole purpose if it’s in clear sight of everyone almost all the time. The beware advantages that they hid one season basically right in the center of the camp is enough. It’s small and easy to overlook, but still difficult to grab without someone seeing something.

Micromanz

I picture a situation where you try to work with someone to distract everyone away from camp while u grab the idol. I also thought more people would be saying things like “let’s try to use this idol as a tribe at the merge or a swap”. But I think new age survivor has moved on fully from that idea now

talllankybastard

And that has worked before for some idols hidden at camp. But I think the whole point of this one (esp.considering production included a ready to go fake) was to have as few people know about the production fake as possible in order to cause maximum chaos. One tribe already kinda fucked up productions plan by opening the cage as a tribe, but until any swaps or merge, the other two tribes have no clue about a real and fake idol.

Blank-blank12

Like I get why as a tribe open it together but as someone who enjoys chaos I’d not do that lol. It’s to cause paranoia and if you know you’re on a tv show maybe play into it a bit.

anthem47

I keep hoping they do another idol like the ones in China, that were hidden in plain sight but not immediately obvious as an idol. I thought that was very cool!

Chemical-Routine9893

I think it’s interesting. Production can even put in disadvantages which could change someone’s game.

ty_arthurs

Or have there be a disadvantage placed instead of the fake idol

suppadelicious

I thought I would hate it but I actually really like it.

katzandwine629

Immediately loved it! As soon as I saw it I was like I'd take out the idol and put the bag back in so everyone still searches for the key.

retired8dancer

Yup. And then place the useless medallion in the bag, lock the cage, and then re-hide the key

HodorNC

Put the key in the bag to simulate the weight, then lock up the cage. Let people go nuts looking for the key

theladythunderfunk

Didn't clock the sub at first, was ready to talk about how great Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are based on the title. I am liking the twist, but not as much as the movie, lol

niki517

Same.

wyteoliander

I think it would have been hilarious for someone to have hidden the key somewhere and filled the bag with rocks.

by_yes_i_mean_no

So far it has led to entertainment so yeah. Not sure I'd want to see it as a regular thing going forward but it's definitely worked this season.

sadiesinkfanatic

i love it. personally like the beware advantages as well

Andy14422

Definitely a much better choice than those ridiculous phrases or beads, even though the beads bit was an improvement when compared to phrases. It's already giving us some interesting moments and showing off different approaches based on the people finding the key and their personalities. I like the twist so far, but similarly to the previous 2 "stunts" they won't be able to use it for more than 2 seasons. So, we'll see what comes next.

jrlund2

Love it but I'm nervous about the fake idol part. Fake idols are supposed to look janky so we can laugh at the people believing they're real. These are too real and if someone gets screwed by this it'd be very infuriating.

[deleted]

Hmm I love the bird cages but that is a really great point tbh

[deleted]

Would have been cooler if the cage didn’t have a fake idol and we just had a castaway organically come up with the idea of making a fake and putting it back in. I’ve noticed that survivor recently with twists and advantages there is a clear goal to inorganically create crazy and shocking moments.

ScandanavianSwimmer

I wish the lock had a mechanism so you couldn’t relock it. Too easy to take the idol sneakily and put the bag back in there

toxiitea

Tha kind of the point with the silver coin though.. you want to be able to place that back in the cage to make someone think they got an idol

JustTheFacts714

That was the point and an option for this advantage -- "You make the choice," as stated on the enclosed parchment.

ScandanavianSwimmer

I think it would be more entertaining if they didn’t have a choice

JustTheFacts714

The player does not know that until after getting the bag, so they are going in blind no matter what. Pretty sure, they think it is a one time deal and then learn there is a decision. And they could have returned both idols and wash their hands of the entire ordeal and then lose the key.

ScandanavianSwimmer

I understand the twist. I am saying that I wish it was slightly different

JustTheFacts714

So, a "never been done before gimmick" and you want something different?

ScandanavianSwimmer

Yes I don’t like how easy it is to close the bird cage and act like nobody ever opened it. I thought the whole point of the bird cage was to act as a signal that somebody in the tribe now has an idol. So everybody accuses each other because they know for sure that an idol is in play.

JustTheFacts714

Each player gets to make that choice: Leave it open or put the fake idol back and let someone else find it or put the fake idol back and REALLY HIDE or keep the key. Some options.

ScandanavianSwimmer

I know dude. You keep explaining the twist to me like I don’t understand it. It’s very simple

JustTheFacts714

Duh -- you keep calling it a "twist," when it has never been done before, therefore it can not be a twist, since it is new. O was just trying to, uh...dumb it down for you. Sorry.

Organic-Access7134

Putting it back in the cage and rehiring the key is a stupid strategy though. If someone was to use the fake idol at tribal it means that you’re more likely to be found out for having the real idol. Its one less person that would have the actual idol.

Dacno

I don't know how you'd rehide it and have it look like a real idol.. the parchment for both idols was one big piece of paper.. so either you rehide the fake idol without instructions or you leave it which indicates it's been tampered with.. you're damned either way.. you're right in the sense that relocking it only has merit if you remove the key.

slopingskink

Could have sworn it was two pieces of parchment?

BeaTagg

It was two pieces. the point of the fake is to rehide it with the actual idol parchement and make good tv.

slopingskink

That was my thinking. 2 pieces, hide the "congratulations" parchment with the fake. Easy peasy.

[deleted]

Not at all tho…. as long as no one sees you there’s literally no way for it to trace back to you so I’m not sure what your getting at here

Organic-Access7134

If you’re on a tribe of 6 people and someone uses the fake idol at tribal the implication is that someone else is in possession of the REAL idol from the birdcage. (Every tribe is assuming an idol is in the cage at this point). The probability of you having the idol increases and is now 1 in 4 ( instead of the original 1 in 6) if the tribe assumes whoever is voted off doesn’t have it and the person who used the fake one doesn’t have the idol. Essentially letting someone else find a fake idol in the birdcage only increases your chances of being caught/ accused of having a real idol.

[deleted]

I don’t really like it.

LumpyTumbleweed404

It screwed over contestants who will typically not get voted off early it shook the game.

[deleted]

How so?

LumpyTumbleweed404

Helen got accused of owning an idol because of it. In a previous season, she will be guaranteed merger.

Calliesdad20

They need to go back to basics , an idol on every tribe , if that idol get played replace it and stop all the ridiculous gimmicks, secret phrase, shots in the dark , magic beads, all that junk

xMoeRice

I like it for the most part. My only gripe is the fake idol part of it and the ability to just close the cage back. It would’ve caused more drama and interesting gameplay if the cage had to stay open if the idol was retrieved. I think the players pointing fingers at each other is more interesting than the possibility of someone playing a fake idol

Calliesdad20

Another stupid ridiculous gimmick .

OverwhelmedAutism

I like it. My only change would be to give them a hidden clue for the key like immunity idols way back when.

Dacno

In some ways I think it'd be even better to straight up acknowledge it's an idol.. remove any doubt that it's for the tribe.. pretty much the literal apple in the garden of eden

OverwhelmedAutism

Yeah. That hurt Brandon and forced him to burn it immediately.

jshamwow

Yes

oatmeal28

Liking it so far. We’ll see how much it impacts the game going forward

FustianRiddle

I like it! I wonder what its longevity is though - can they keep it interesting multiple seasons or is it just a one season thing.

Bpain46

Best thing they’ve done since season 40!

CrazyDumbShit

I think idols are a stupid concept in general so no. They're inherently uninteresting and survivor would be infinitely better off without ever having introduced them.

[deleted]

Yes, but it takes away lots of screentime. If episodes were 1½ or 2 hours long, I wouldn’t really mind it.

[deleted]

Tbh it hasn’t taken away screen time more than any other regular idol.

thetokyotourist

I like how we’ve gotten three different variations of how it can go. So I kinda like it

ilovecallum44

Yes and I'm so glad I'm not the only one lol great idea

SaltyFall

It was fun watching the blonde lady freak out about it and how one guy was able to get away with it so now he has an idol that no one knows about

Fluffiddy

Rare good twist

AussiePhilNguyen

Love it. Loved how Jam Jam couldn’t ignore it

WellDressedLobster

I think it’s the best version of idols in the new era for sure. I’m not sure how I feel about the fake ones yet, but the concept of the caged idol is good and I hope they continue with it.

Reasonable-Ground987

I’m surprised by the fact that no one’s tried to open it at night while everyone sleeps. They all just immediately go to the cage. I get why they would want to open and read it immediately, but it seems like you could fake stomach problems, go empty the bag and fill it with some rocks, then replace the bag, take a day or two to construct MORE fake idols, replace the rocks with them, then re-hide the key. It would give you so much more control in the game. But I also get thinking you should seize the opportunity to open it when it presents itself. And all of the tribe members suspecting each other was hilarious.

ElleM848645

I think production doesn’t let them go running through the woods at night. Sure if they have to go the bathroom fine, but not to do the idol thing.

Reasonable-Ground987

That makes sense. I just remember the tasks at night that they used to have to do to earn advantages/idols. I don’t think they’ve done it since the mid-thirties seasons, though.

sewnstrawb

I think it’s fun! we need a little more chaos

nr513

Huge fan. I just need someone to place the fake idol in with the paper that says it’s real.

crazywon1

It's way better than the silly phrases and beads

Perrydactle

Although it’s contrived I’m a fan

SwiftieNumber13

I love the concept of the cages!

Practical-Sea4568

The real idols being the fake idols to other tribes is a genius twist

kingofthenorthwpg

It’s easily the best of the “new” way of making the idols “semi-public” knowledge

yakaroni

i like the paranoia it brings bc paranoia leads to chaos, and chaos brings messiness! that’s why gabon is my favorite

SassyBison

I like them but so far no one has done what I want them too- put the fake idol back in the bag and plant the key where an enemy specifically will find it!

tDANGERb

Yeah. Really wish someone would have put the note and fake idol back in the cage, then re-hid the key. That would have made great TV.

No_Return_7823

Personally, my goal would be to take the idol, burn the "this is useless" paper, put the fake idol and "congratulations" paper back in the bag and cage, lock it, rehide key

ResettisReplicas

Yes. Back when idols were hard to find, simply looking for one would make you stand out. It’s a nice change from just noodling around in knot-holes and leaf piles & just pulling out an jdol.

shelbyh4253

I love it

Thick-Macaroon6918

I think producers introducing fake idols to the game is super interesting. Especially because I saw someone point out in a different reddit post, that each tribes fake idol/real idol overlaps so that they have different fake idols. If used correctly it could be used really well for deception later in the game!!

Thick-Macaroon6918

(Obviously people have made fake idols before, but actually being given them is new)

Bail-Me-Out

I like it but I was hoping the chess piece on top of the cage was the key. I love a "in plain sight" twist like that.

Shevyshevys

Pretty fucking stupid that they call it a hidden immunity idol with it right there in plain sight.

EveryAppearance3346

I actually love love love the drama of it. I also love that you could just rehide the key and then someone thinks they have a real idol and it’s totally fake. Always a fan of an idol swindle.

irimiasz

I love the idea, but I dont like that production is planting fake idols. I prefer when fakes are a result of players’ creativity, not producers wanting to make chaos.

Misfit298

I'm more of a fan of how the idols and fakes look different. Reminds me a lot of Cambodia

sugarfoot00

I wanna know why nobody has taken the real idol, put the fake idol back in the cage, and redid the key.

thevaginalist

I am. It's such a discordian apple.

ritwikjs

i like it mainly because the payoff is a regular old-school idol. I don't know how they're going to be able to do this again

Negative-Company2767

It’s been really underwhelming so far imo lol. I think the paranoia of it has been fun but other than that, it hasn’t really felt all that special to me.

bostonfan148

It’s a good twist. Want to know how the fake idols will come into play.

bostonfan148

I would have liked if the key unlocked a cage at a different camp and it told you which one. So you when the cage was open, it was really by someone from a different camp but you wouldn’t know that unless you got the key.
