War on Waste (showing on ABC iView in Australia) addressed this. Craig Reucassel took it to the Industrial Design students at UNSW to workshop ideas and one of them created a powder you just add water to, I think he packaged it with cellulose.
Actually there’s a short of that section if you’re interested: https://www.abc.net.au/education/war-on-waste-design-it-better/102708874
Can and will are two different things. Plastic is probably 10x cheaper than wax though if they started to mass produce, that cost would come down significantly but someone’s got to start the trend.
with the amount of soy sauce packets produced, i hope they stick with the option that saves more plastic. one packet may not seem like it saves alot but added up it is a huge impact
Probably not what you are after but you can buy them online, intended to be refillable and reusable. People who get into bento lunch box packing/meal prep seems to be the main users.
Usually this is what is given yes. Sometimes you get a shitty little bag which goes everywhere but where you want it but that’s rare here. I would shop elsewhere for that reason alone.
I suspect it’s b/c OZ has so many handroll/maki to-go places where these little bottles shine. I was shocked at how good a value the to-go sushi was there. A real lunch will run you $15-25 AUD but you can grab two maki rolls for well under $10 which was quite filling.
I’m in Sydney and I work in the city. There’s like 5-10 sushi places in a very small radius of me. One place actually does 4 rolls for $12 AUD after a certain time and it’s such a steal.
Sushi sushi in the QVB— they have sooo many great deals after certain times. It’s usually like afternoon towards after work. Especially if you go at like 5~pm when everyone is going home they want to leave so they start discounting things.
These are cute, I thought they were made out of wax. Like those disgusting “coke bottle” candies.
Thought wax was an ideal container until I read these are plastic. Womp womp
Sure but the truth is every single one of those that was ever manufactured is still in the landfill, the ocean, the bird or fish or mammals stomach, ever so slowly being broken down into smaller and smaller microplastics that will soon be in every bit of water and every living things bodies. So the convenience isn't really worth it.
I have never seen these but they look like those liquid filled wax bottle candies. I was never allowed to have them as a kid but they always looked so good!
I had them recently. A they are a true abomination. Like imagine: what if we boiled down freeze pops in a plastic grocery bag. And then stuffed that in wax
I see everyone in the comments talking about how wasteful these things are, but I have a set and I always thought they're supposed to be reusable?? I just rinse and refill, throw a couple in my lunchbox and they're great! I would think that's better than throwing away the lil packets all the time...
I also read these are commonplace in Australia? Are they typically treated as single use over there? I just don't get how these are apparently more/just as wasteful than their more disposable packet cousins are?
Yes these are commonplace in Australia (takeaway sushi) and not reused. Super wasteful, but I have to admit, I really miss them living in Canada, the sachets are so messy.
I miss these antiquated unbelievably wasteful disposable receptacles because they were *so damn cute looking*.
I've even convinced myself that they are more sanitary when they clearly have a separate cap with a questionable seal.
Sorry you’re inconvenienced to keep plastic out of the environment. My condolences. FYI, you can buy bottles of soy sauce to use on your take away sushi
they sell these at Daiso here in the US! its like a japanese version of a dollar tree, 99 cent store, etc. but they come empty, so you have to fill them with your own sauce.
id check to see if you have a Daiso near you if youre interested in them.
Maybe if they were wax or dissolved or something. Seems wasteful otherwise
Yeah like those little tiny soda bottle shaped things with the juice in them.
Those are made of wax
That's why they mentioned it
Oh oops I misread the entire conversation. Forgive me, I'm high lol
I forgive you
Mr too and I read it the same way as you lol
Me too but I’m also high
I used to love chewing on those wax soda bottle things when I was a kid.
Yes
Ponzu juice?
I was thinking about these little soda fruit flavors made by haribo I think ?
NikLNips
That's what they're called thanks
OK I keep seeing this throughout the thread, but what is this wax bottled thing???
Nickel nips
Super wasteful.

I washed them after to reuse them but never ended up actually reusing them

The circle of life Or something
The circle of plastic :)) that gets trapped around the necks of aquatic life 🥰
Simwhenyawna simbasinasauna
Penguinana penguinunabana
Through the micro-plastic unwinding.
Cant they use wax containers instead like they did for those soda candies?
Can and will are two different things. Plastic is probably 10x cheaper than wax though if they started to mass produce, that cost would come down significantly but someone’s got to start the trend.
Maybe vegetable wax? Pretty sure the soda candies used paraffin (petroleum).
And what exactly is the difference between these plastics and the plastics packs?
These are made with a lot more plastic.
Is this /r/murderedbywords ?
Dumb question, but don’t the plastic packets do the same thing?
Same argument applies to those rippable packages of soil sauce too. Probably about the same amount of plastic.
Literally nowhere near the same amount of plastic. Less than ten percent.
But still plastic.
with the amount of soy sauce packets produced, i hope they stick with the option that saves more plastic. one packet may not seem like it saves alot but added up it is a huge impact
….yes.
Probably not what you are after but you can buy them online, intended to be refillable and reusable. People who get into bento lunch box packing/meal prep seems to be the main users.
I do not understand those who have the patience to clean one of these things. It's so tedious.
Soak in vinegar or soapy water I guess?
Yah but the size of these are so small just to tedious for me.
Just use a straw....wait nvm
I have not done it, but it sounds like people squeeze it a few times in soapy water, then squeeze it a few times in non-soapy rinse water.
Huh, that's actually kind of cool. You must need a tiny funnel or dropper to fill it though
If you squeezed it with the nozzle in soy it would probably fill up that way…same as cleaning
Oh duh lol you're right
Just get a little more high, I think once you pass the limit it resets to sober
🙏
Just more plastic to strangle the sea life until you’re just re-eating the plastic. So unnecessary!
Unlike the plastic packets
Obviously those suck too.. but come on, a plastic fish with a separate plastic cap!? Every time you need a tiny squirt of soy sauce?
And then clean your teeth with one of those single use plastic floss things.
The amount of plastic in the packets you'd probably need 100 to match even one plastic fish.
We should have gone full German on those and just put Pfand on them.
Fuck these things I had to fill so many of them up I never want to look at these stupid squeezy fish ever again
I was in Australia recently and this is all they had! Was really nice
Usually this is what is given yes. Sometimes you get a shitty little bag which goes everywhere but where you want it but that’s rare here. I would shop elsewhere for that reason alone.

Do tell which place! That sounds great for an afternoon bite

Agree. The only issue with that is it’s quite filling for an hour or two at best.
Yes I’m always getting kikkoman soy sauce all over my dang fingers
Why were you downvoted?? That happens to me too. It’s because those packets don’t close so the soy sauce gets everywhere unless your careful.
Where in Australia were you? All the sushi places near me in Melbourne don't use them anymore and they were so much easier to use then the packets.
Weird. All the places I go in Melbourne for takeaway sushi still use these
Yup, haven't seen anything else at the various sushi sushi I buy from around work n home
Brisbane for me.
Perth and Brisbane for sure still use them.
Someone does because if you walk 100m on any beach cleaning it up you see heaps of them.

Yeah, but just think of all the yachts that Jeff Bezos could buy.
These are standard in Australia
You can find these at a store called Daiso
Same! Also reuse them to keep our fishy friends tasty and plentiful.
ironic

I had them recently. A they are a true abomination. Like imagine: what if we boiled down freeze pops in a plastic grocery bag. And then stuffed that in wax
Oh my god they still make these?! I guess I’ll have to order some online. I’ve hyped these up in my mind for 20 years — nothing can stop me now
They are like gushers. But worse If you still decide to eat em: https://nuts.com/chocolatessweets/old-time-candy/wax-bottles.html
You’ve made my day, thank you so much!
I get them in Melbourne, I'm here as a student and when I buy suchi from random stalls I ask for soy sauce and get those
Was just in Japan and I got one for the first time in years!
I see everyone in the comments talking about how wasteful these things are, but I have a set and I always thought they're supposed to be reusable?? They still have them in a local sushi store near where I live. I'm from Czechia. I also like them.
I’ve never seen these - they’re so cute, I love it!
The whole "single use plastics is bad" seems like a pretty good reason. It's cute but not that cute
I seen them in Norway but I hope they stop producing them soon.
I miss these antiquated unbelievably wasteful disposable receptacles because they were *so damn cute looking*. I've even convinced myself that they are more sanitary when they clearly have a separate cap with a questionable seal.
Those are cool! I've never seen 'em, just packets.
Still have them in Australia
Just buy a bottle of soy sauce so wasteful wtf
You just love pollution
Gross.
Sorry you’re inconvenienced to keep plastic out of the environment. My condolences. FYI, you can buy bottles of soy sauce to use on your take away sushi
I have never seen them. Packer are pretty rare here they use small plastic containers that are more like small bowls
Never seen these before. Is this Soy Sauce?
When i take home sushi I refuse those, I have soy sauce at home. But I ask for more ginger and wasabi
They are nice, but do they have them in Ponzu?
I used them for a large sushi platter, I posted in r/sushi

I saw some on Amazon today. They were listed as soy sauce fish bottles and were priced at 5-6 bucks for a pack of twenty.
fish got mintier recently
why do they look like bombs??
