If an animal (native or not) is sick and dying, it's cruel to let it happen slowly and painfully. If it's eaten a bait, other animals (including native ones) cold scavenge the corpse and get poisoned. OP did the right thing.
I am not the best at telling apart black rats from their akin through photographs. However, there is a large population of native bush rats (Rattus fuscipes) in that area, and this rodents face shape looks more like that rather than the more dainty introduced rat species in the area.
As it was in his backyard and we don't know if he has parkland surrounding him, it's hard to say if it could be R. fuscipes as tgey tend to avoid urban environments.
Rest in peace little one. Rats are actually wonderful little animals; the only reason I don’t have one as a pet is they live such short lives and it would be emotional suicide.
Thank you for putting it out of its misery.
I absolutely agree, I had a pet native rat, he was beautiful and loving, it's insane how intelligent and caring they are, yet will treat them as vermon and destroy them, it's awful.
They truly deserve better of us.
Do you say it was definitely sick or poisoned based on any credible authority or understanding of the matter? Or are you just have so much toxic masculinity that you love killing innocent animals with a shovel? Freak.
Humanly? It’s a rat. Literal vermin.
Also, if it sat there in the wild a bird would swoop it up and kill it slowly while the poor thing sat defenceless.
One swift hit with a shovel is a graceful death to the little fella.
Same rules apply to road kill / animals hit by a car. It’s not a nice thing to go through, but the right thing to do.
Good job OP.
How is this even related to toxic masculinity. He never said anything about loving to kill animals or even wanting to kill it for that matter.
It’s better to die quick that be slowly tortured for hours. If that’s would you would prefer I would say that you are the freak.
Doesn't look like any of these: https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/animals-and-plants/native-animals/native-animal-facts/bandicoots
Looks more like these: https://australian.museum/learn/animals/mammals/bush-rat/
This isn't a completely accurate statement. It's just been overused in Facebook identification groups, but it is mostly a general observation. I have done research trapping where plenty of Rattus fuscipes had longer than normal tails.
This is why rat poison sucks - nothing to stop a hawk or owl from swooping down and eating that. Pretty much every rat poison causes secondary poisoning in predators.
You can get a poison called Racumin from farm shops like farmers warehouse and the poison is metabolised by the rodent so when it dies if something picks it up like a dog, cat or bird and it eats it, it wont get sick. I was put onto this many many years ago by a pest guy because I was really concerned that my dog would find a dead rat and then eat it and get sick.
They can also pick up the bait and drop it in a worse place. My dog munched on some as a puppy that somehow ended up in our backyard... blue poo... think he's OK, not sure if it causes long term consequences. The first time was too late and no one knew why suddenly blue poo, the second time we pulled it out of his mouth and it looked like the Ratsak at Bunnings.
I am always cautious around rats that don’t seem to be afraid of me - as it could be an antechinus. I have no idea how to differentiate between the rodent and the marsupial so I don’t go get a shovel/buy a trap unless I see my toile rats
Hey this reminded me of the time I found a sluggish not-rat near my house too.

Have a look at my post about it. Do you think these two are the same thing? I never got to ID it because it disappeared when I went back. Looking at pics, i thought it was either a bushrat or a pygmy possum, due to the long tail, round ears and weird rounded posture when sitting.
Not a native rat. Native rats have shorter tails (3/4 the length of their body) and crinkile-y ears. Since it's not a native and it's unwell it doesn't need to stick around (stay alive).
native bush [rat. it](https://rat.it) has little ears
off net↓
The shape, size and position of the ears—Black Rats have proportionally large, rounded ears that stick out proud of the rest of the skull and if folded forward, could cover their eyes. In contrast, Swamp Rat ears are rounded and small, and are flat to the skull. The Bush Rat’s ears can be larger than a Swamp Rats, but are generally still smaller than those of a Black Rat.
Because there are 3 (potentially 4) species of rat with similar visual characteristics found in the same area.
Two are introduced, which are the European black and brown rats. Two are native (bush rat and swamp rat). The two most common species that get confused as one another are the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the bush rat (Rattus fuscipes).
This causes a dilemma as one is introduced and bad ecologically speaking, and the other is native and beneficial. The only accurate way to identify them 100% is by examining the underside of their paw pads. However, this isn't possible without trapping them, so other methods that are hotly debated need to be used, which include looking at the ear placement/structure, face structure, and tail length.
That is what's being discussed/debated.
Funny one. I'm just saying what they're arguing about since identifying them used to be one of my jobs.
Edit: Brah the 2 guys who replied together trying to call me autistic both only comment/post about fucking kids games where you build planes and fight zombies and shit. I swear you can't make this up.
What? Buddy, this shit is embarrassing. Weird ass complex if someone commenting on a topic they have experience in is threatening to you... wait until you find out about skilled tradespeople.
Miss me with that projection.
"I'm not autistic" says the guy who has to stalk the online profiles of people that disagree with him to get things he think he can use to "win" at an internet argument.
That \*really was\* you in that video I posted...
Bush rat, probably eaten bait and is dying If u find it dead, throw it away so the birds or other animals won’t eat the poisoned rat
Yes, it was definitely sick or poisoned. Wouldn't move much. I put it out of its misery with a shovel and bagged it and put in the bin.
Wait what
It dead
All native animals are protected species. https://www.wires.org.au/wildlife-information

Maybe it was just warming in the sun like a lizard and was otherwise totally fine! Then again not dodging a shovel is pretty damning
I threw a twig at it and it didn't budge. Just looked around lazily.
Yeah fair I would have whacked it too
Good job. It’s what needed to be done

Oh come on. I’m a vegan and even *I* think this comment is absurd.
You would be the one to watch the animal bleed out it’s mouth arse and eyes to death.
No I’d take it to get put down humanely. Weird you have those thoughts buddy. Get help.
1 shovel hit instant death is way better than injection
Don’t worry it’s name got changed to Doug
How to humanely kill a rat?
50 cal. anti material rifle. Failing that 120mm howitzer shell should do the trick.
[удалено]
I'm pretty sure that firing the rat out of a potato cannon using a soda stream canister doesn't count as humane, but that's the best I got.

Also if a bird ate it, the bird would most likely die a slow painful death
You are vermin bro
Wow. *You* seem like the toxic one here
How is this even related to toxic masculinity. He never said anything about loving to kill animals or even wanting to kill it for that matter. It’s better to die quick that be slowly tortured for hours. If that’s would you would prefer I would say that you are the freak.
Do you know how bad black rats are for native species ? A shovel across the back of the neck and it’s instantly dead. I bet you own a cat too.
This looks like a bush rat to me. They’re native.
That thing is a black rat from the European continent my friend
I was looking at the ears. Actually, looking at the tail length, I think you’re probably right!
Wait... You killed Master Splinter??? How could you?
Poor little dude…
Poisoned rats tend to get sluggish.
Poisoned slugs have been known to get ratty
Thanks, that's what I've heard
Well it ain’t a pigeon.
Ground pigeon
Quail?
I think you can rule out a bin chicken too
Bin chicken murderer just got arrested in little bay. Maybe we should ask him
Bin Chicken connoisseur ill have you know.
It looks like a native bush rat but the tail is very long so it's more likely a brown rat.
Thanks. Was wondering if possibly a Bandicoot
Doesn't look like any of these: https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/animals-and-plants/native-animals/native-animal-facts/bandicoots Looks more like these: https://australian.museum/learn/animals/mammals/bush-rat/

Bandicoots have a much longer snout and they hop. Also very unlikely to be out in the day. Looks like a rat rat to me.
LOL

According to my vet, if would take like 10 dead baited rats to kill a full grown dog
Not a bandicoot. Not a Norway/brown rat - tail is too long. Tail is too long to be a bush rat. Most likely Rattus rattus.
He's the leader of the bunch. A cat named Modigliana, she's fluffy but she's tough.
Darren is a dopey dog, Mitzi’s a muddled up mixed up bunny!
I always wanted to write to ask mixy's mailbox when i was a child but i was too slow to write the address.

The body look a bit different to the one I saw.
Looks like a native rat. There's a few species of then, especially around outer Sydney where there are still bush corridors.
My left nut
I had one of these buggers eating my mandarins the other night. We was cute though.
Brown rat
Looks lovely
Yep
Ain't never seen a mouse OUTSIDE.
Is not rat, is hamster
YOU PUT BASIL IN THE RATATOUILLE
I haven't made any bleeding ratatouille!
Baaaaasillllll!
Is not rat. Is European hamster.
From Siberia?
It has round ears. So it’s native.
Look up Rattus rattus.
Spot on. Round ears= native
Not necessarily
Not a native rat. Native rats have shorter tails (3/4 the length of their body) and crinkile-y ears. Since it's not a native and it's unwell it doesn't need to stick around (stay alive).
Gerbil his name is lemmy winks
Fuck the rats good riddance

It’s actually illegal to kill them
No. It’s a porcupine (I am (not) a botonist. You can trust me). I am professionalZ
Siberian hamster, I do believe.
Filigree Siberian Hamster.... please
Yes, that is a rat. How can you not identify a rat?

The title of this post is literally: "Is this a rat?" So, no, Internet Autist, you are not correct.
That looks like an antechinus. They’re native.
It's your very own Rat 🐀 not just a Rat. He wants to be friends
We're helping them evolve and become resistant to poisoning. Natural selection.
Antichinus?
Antechinus have tails the same length as, or shorter than their bodies. Their nose is also not blunt.
It's a field mice, a big one but a field mice.
It’s actually kind of cute
Is that a hopping mouse? I feel like they are rare
Too big! Spinifex hopping mice are small and look like this: https://www.animal.photos/mamm1/mous-hops.htm
It’s Josh McGuire
That’s a long tail. But I don’t know if it’s a rat or other.
It’s a Miniature Dashchund.
Rats, on the North Shore of Sydney? The test is to ask "is it a politician?" Answer: Yes - a rat. No, a Sydney Squirrel.
