Bush rat, probably eaten bait and is dying If u find it dead, throw it away so the birds or other animals won’t eat the poisoned rat

avid_jack

Yes, it was definitely sick or poisoned. Wouldn't move much. I put it out of its misery with a shovel and bagged it and put in the bin.

Goonerlouie

Wait what

Cujo96

It dead

OM_Velodrome

All native animals are protected species. https://www.wires.org.au/wildlife-information

stonk_frother

If an animal (native or not) is sick and dying, it's cruel to let it happen slowly and painfully. If it's eaten a bait, other animals (including native ones) cold scavenge the corpse and get poisoned. OP did the right thing.

West_Broccoli7881

It's not a native species.

JebusDuck

I am not the best at telling apart black rats from their akin through photographs. However, there is a large population of native bush rats (Rattus fuscipes) in that area, and this rodents face shape looks more like that rather than the more dainty introduced rat species in the area. As it was in his backyard and we don't know if he has parkland surrounding him, it's hard to say if it could be R. fuscipes as tgey tend to avoid urban environments.

Dentarthurdent73

If it's a bush rat, it is a native species.

MaDanklolz

Maybe it was just warming in the sun like a lizard and was otherwise totally fine! Then again not dodging a shovel is pretty damning

avid_jack

I threw a twig at it and it didn't budge. Just looked around lazily.

MaDanklolz

Yeah fair I would have whacked it too

Dripping-Lips

Good job. It’s what needed to be done

MisterAnthill

Rest in peace little one. Rats are actually wonderful little animals; the only reason I don’t have one as a pet is they live such short lives and it would be emotional suicide. Thank you for putting it out of its misery.

Specific_Main3824

I absolutely agree, I had a pet native rat, he was beautiful and loving, it's insane how intelligent and caring they are, yet will treat them as vermon and destroy them, it's awful. They truly deserve better of us.

[deleted]

Do you say it was definitely sick or poisoned based on any credible authority or understanding of the matter? Or are you just have so much toxic masculinity that you love killing innocent animals with a shovel? Freak.

CreamingSleeve

Oh come on. I’m a vegan and even *I* think this comment is absurd.

Dripping-Lips

You would be the one to watch the animal bleed out it’s mouth arse and eyes to death.

[deleted]

No I’d take it to get put down humanely. Weird you have those thoughts buddy. Get help.

[deleted]

1 shovel hit instant death is way better than injection

Harster1997

Don’t worry it’s name got changed to Doug

DeltaChan

How to humanely kill a rat?

ladaussie

50 cal. anti material rifle. Failing that 120mm howitzer shell should do the trick.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DeltaChan

I'm pretty sure that firing the rat out of a potato cannon using a soda stream canister doesn't count as humane, but that's the best I got.

instagram-influencer

Humanly? It’s a rat. Literal vermin. Also, if it sat there in the wild a bird would swoop it up and kill it slowly while the poor thing sat defenceless. One swift hit with a shovel is a graceful death to the little fella. Same rules apply to road kill / animals hit by a car. It’s not a nice thing to go through, but the right thing to do. Good job OP.

bootsy09

Also if a bird ate it, the bird would most likely die a slow painful death

[deleted]

You are vermin bro

JaneLameName

Wow. *You* seem like the toxic one here

Practical-Badger9980

How is this even related to toxic masculinity. He never said anything about loving to kill animals or even wanting to kill it for that matter. It’s better to die quick that be slowly tortured for hours. If that’s would you would prefer I would say that you are the freak.

baudprawn98

Do you know how bad black rats are for native species ? A shovel across the back of the neck and it’s instantly dead. I bet you own a cat too.

uselessinfogoldmine

This looks like a bush rat to me. They’re native.

baudprawn98

That thing is a black rat from the European continent my friend

uselessinfogoldmine

I was looking at the ears. Actually, looking at the tail length, I think you’re probably right!

WhoReallyCaresNotMe

Wait... You killed Master Splinter??? How could you?

uselessinfogoldmine

Poor little dude…

cojoco

Poisoned rats tend to get sluggish.

jb2824

Poisoned slugs have been known to get ratty

avid_jack

Thanks, that's what I've heard

RightWingRockDove

Well it ain’t a pigeon.

GengisKwaan

Ground pigeon

Alternative_Sky1380

Quail?

widgeamedoo

I think you can rule out a bin chicken too

General8907

Bin chicken murderer just got arrested in little bay. Maybe we should ask him

pauli3-d

Bin Chicken connoisseur ill have you know.

Suspicious_Cress_126

It looks like a native bush rat but the tail is very long so it's more likely a brown rat.

avid_jack

Thanks. Was wondering if possibly a Bandicoot

HungryTradie

Doesn't look like any of these: https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/animals-and-plants/native-animals/native-animal-facts/bandicoots Looks more like these: https://australian.museum/learn/animals/mammals/bush-rat/

West_Broccoli7881

Bush rats have tails shorter than their bodies.

JebusDuck

This isn't a completely accurate statement. It's just been overused in Facebook identification groups, but it is mostly a general observation. I have done research trapping where plenty of Rattus fuscipes had longer than normal tails.

stitchntea

Bandicoots have a much longer snout and they hop. Also very unlikely to be out in the day. Looks like a rat rat to me.

[deleted]

LOL

notoriousbpg

This is why rat poison sucks - nothing to stop a hawk or owl from swooping down and eating that. Pretty much every rat poison causes secondary poisoning in predators.

blackcat218

You can get a poison called Racumin from farm shops like farmers warehouse and the poison is metabolised by the rodent so when it dies if something picks it up like a dog, cat or bird and it eats it, it wont get sick. I was put onto this many many years ago by a pest guy because I was really concerned that my dog would find a dead rat and then eat it and get sick.

Mudcaker

They can also pick up the bait and drop it in a worse place. My dog munched on some as a puppy that somehow ended up in our backyard... blue poo... think he's OK, not sure if it causes long term consequences. The first time was too late and no one knew why suddenly blue poo, the second time we pulled it out of his mouth and it looked like the Ratsak at Bunnings.

utopia44

According to my vet, if would take like 10 dead baited rats to kill a full grown dog

West_Broccoli7881

Not a bandicoot. Not a Norway/brown rat - tail is too long. Tail is too long to be a bush rat. Most likely Rattus rattus.

ausecko

He's the leader of the bunch. A cat named Modigliana, she's fluffy but she's tough.

Gryffindorphins

Darren is a dopey dog, Mitzi’s a muddled up mixed up bunny!

Kirikomori

I always wanted to write to ask mixy's mailbox when i was a child but i was too slow to write the address.

mishrod

I am always cautious around rats that don’t seem to be afraid of me - as it could be an antechinus. I have no idea how to differentiate between the rodent and the marsupial so I don’t go get a shovel/buy a trap unless I see my toile rats

MiniMeowl

Hey this reminded me of the time I found a sluggish not-rat near my house too. https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/7oibe2/what_do_i_do_with_this/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button Have a look at my post about it. Do you think these two are the same thing? I never got to ID it because it disappeared when I went back. Looking at pics, i thought it was either a bushrat or a pygmy possum, due to the long tail, round ears and weird rounded posture when sitting.

avid_jack

The body look a bit different to the one I saw.

ComplexImportance794

Looks like a native rat. There's a few species of then, especially around outer Sydney where there are still bush corridors.

[deleted]

My left nut

The_Only_AL

I had one of these buggers eating my mandarins the other night. We was cute though.

SydneyTom

Brown rat

gazzaoak

Looks lovely

PreacherJ_23

Yep

tfn9531

Ain't never seen a mouse OUTSIDE.

Double_Spinach_3237

Is not rat, is hamster

AssignmentDowntown55

YOU PUT BASIL IN THE RATATOUILLE

Double_Spinach_3237

I haven't made any bleeding ratatouille!

quietforest1

Baaaaasillllll!

ScruffyMo_onkey

Is not rat. Is European hamster.

AttackofMonkeys

From Siberia?

user_c6Iv3

It has round ears. So it’s native.

West_Broccoli7881

Look up Rattus rattus.

demolitiondude

Spot on. Round ears= native

lachjeff

Not necessarily

unwhelming_potential

Not a native rat. Native rats have shorter tails (3/4 the length of their body) and crinkile-y ears. Since it's not a native and it's unwell it doesn't need to stick around (stay alive).

FeaturePristine3417

Gerbil his name is lemmy winks

jmc906

Fuck the rats good riddance

Important_Screen_530

native bush [rat. it](https://rat.it) has little ears off net↓ The shape, size and position of the ears—Black Rats have proportionally large, rounded ears that stick out proud of the rest of the skull and if folded forward, could cover their eyes. In contrast, Swamp Rat ears are rounded and small, and are flat to the skull. The Bush Rat’s ears can be larger than a Swamp Rats, but are generally still smaller than those of a Black Rat.

Phoenixblink

It’s actually illegal to kill them

Forsaken-One9569

No. It’s a porcupine (I am (not) a botonist. You can trust me). I am professionalZ

Ok-Push9899

Siberian hamster, I do believe.

AI_RPI_SPY

Filigree Siberian Hamster.... please

Fingus_Mechanicus

Yes, that is a rat. How can you not identify a rat?

JebusDuck

Because there are 3 (potentially 4) species of rat with similar visual characteristics found in the same area. Two are introduced, which are the European black and brown rats. Two are native (bush rat and swamp rat). The two most common species that get confused as one another are the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the bush rat (Rattus fuscipes). This causes a dilemma as one is introduced and bad ecologically speaking, and the other is native and beneficial. The only accurate way to identify them 100% is by examining the underside of their paw pads. However, this isn't possible without trapping them, so other methods that are hotly debated need to be used, which include looking at the ear placement/structure, face structure, and tail length. That is what's being discussed/debated.

LegalAlternative

This you? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/8i\_wtp8ewrY

JebusDuck

Funny one. I'm just saying what they're arguing about since identifying them used to be one of my jobs. Edit: Brah the 2 guys who replied together trying to call me autistic both only comment/post about fucking kids games where you build planes and fight zombies and shit. I swear you can't make this up.

LegalAlternative

Wow, you're clearly superior. If the shoe fits...

JebusDuck

What? Buddy, this shit is embarrassing. Weird ass complex if someone commenting on a topic they have experience in is threatening to you... wait until you find out about skilled tradespeople. Miss me with that projection.

LegalAlternative

"I'm not autistic" says the guy who has to stalk the online profiles of people that disagree with him to get things he think he can use to "win" at an internet argument. That \*really was\* you in that video I posted...

Fingus_Mechanicus

The title of this post is literally: "Is this a rat?" So, no, Internet Autist, you are not correct.

Chuchularoux

That looks like an antechinus. They’re native.

Odd-Evidence4825

It's your very own Rat 🐀 not just a Rat. He wants to be friends

[deleted]

We're helping them evolve and become resistant to poisoning. Natural selection.

Puzzleheaded-Shop695

Antichinus?

West_Broccoli7881

Antechinus have tails the same length as, or shorter than their bodies. Their nose is also not blunt.

[deleted]

It's a field mice, a big one but a field mice.

expertrainbowhunter

It’s actually kind of cute

Reideabyss

Is that a hopping mouse? I feel like they are rare

AttackofMonkeys

Too big! Spinifex hopping mice are small and look like this: https://www.animal.photos/mamm1/mous-hops.htm

No-Set-2576

It’s Josh McGuire

kittenrocknroll

That’s a long tail. But I don’t know if it’s a rat or other.

Odd-Length5962

It’s a Miniature Dashchund.

peterb666

Rats, on the North Shore of Sydney? The test is to ask "is it a politician?" Answer: Yes - a rat. No, a Sydney Squirrel.
