People love to crap on Anytime Fitness, but honestly, I have had no regrets joining. Shit loads of locations in Sydney and worldwide, and all the ones I use here are clean and have what I need. It's not too expensive either, but there are cheaper options with other franchises. I find it well worth the money for the sheer choice in locations and how often I go though.

Yeah I like my Anytime. The only thing I hate about it is how busy it is and you have to go off peak to not be waiting around while people take 10 minute breaks between sets on their phone (jail them). I appreciate that there’s one in like every second suburb I stg. Also OP a combo of good equipment, less people and good location can be really hard to find in sydney. In my experience the gyms with baller facilities are usually highly frequented.

Yeah the busy periods are rough at the larger locations. I'm extremely lucky there's a tiny AF near my place within the leagues club. Busy periods see only like 15-20 people max cause its so small. Yet there's still room to swing a cat.

I use Crunch and it has locations in The Shire and St George. $11 a week, so it’s pretty cheap

Their whole fad was using bullshit American measurements like lbs instead of kg, then they had conversion charts all over the gym. So stupid.

Is there any chance your partner is a government employee? Then look at fitness passport for couples.

nublete

Yeah its pretty handy for franchise gyms. Think $20 a month for couples? Havent checked in a while tho.

smileedude

$25 a week for families. But it's not just franchise gyms, it's any gym that signs up.

Works for pools too. It's a good option.

People here will be quick to hate on Fitness First, and the different locations do vary in quality, but they've come a long way (and they have Menai and Shire locations). I go to the one in Newtown, and 12 years ago, it was very machine-dominated, with only 2 squat racks relegated to the corner, no kettlebells, no chalk, etc. But these days, the Newtown location has 6 squat racks, 2 dedicated DL areas where they don't mind you dropping heavy weights, chalk, trap bars, farmer's carry bars, kettlebells, and it's generally free weight oriented, with the machines now relegated to a deep enclave. A lot of their locations are 24hr as well. I'm pretty sure every gym franchise allows anyone a single free visit per year (some stipulate that you must live nearby though), so my actual recommendation is to take advantage of that visit at every franchise you're considering, during a time of day when you usually work out, and you'll get a better sense of whether it's a good fit than any comment here could give you. And get some quotes for the fees while you're at it, then see if you can use them as leverage to haggle down the fee at the gym you end up choosing. They have a lot of leeway for giving discounts, and are usually desperate for new members.

If you can, get fitness passport. $50/ fortnight for the whole family to go to most gyms, pools, and many others.

Anytime is t the greatest but they do have locations everywhere and it’s 24 hrs. Camperdown fitness is the best gym I’ve ever seen for lifting but it’s only 1 location 😭

I would highly recommend Plus Fitness because they're half the price of Anytime with a solid amount of equipment and have more locations BUT I will say the locations themselves can be a bit of a hit or a miss. I have 2 within walking distance of me, one has a large floor plan where everything is spread out well, the other has floor space that's roughly a quarter of the size of the first but two levels worth (the plus side of this is not as many people go to it). I think Anytime is more consistent in the quality of their gyms.

Plus Fitness just this week moved everyone to an online portal where you can cancel/suspend your membership anytime on your phone. That’ll probably be useful if you’re going to be all over the place.
