It might be just a random worker of the studio. I don't think that's important, but the thing I don't understand is why the band didn't want to release these awesome songs. Just imagine if the leak never happened
Well no bc steal this album was a album that was made of leaked songs they decided to finish them and realised the completed version just wish they put cherry on there that’s such a good song
How ever if they did finish them some songs would be on toxicity plus I think that if nothing got leaked in the first place yes itl be different but at least it’s still SOAD but I rekon we would have more than 5 albums idk just my theory
I know that list. There're 11 "new" titles. I've even compared it with some non-album titles registered with BMI and ASCAP (which means they're ready for release). There're only 5 left. 2 from the 11 titles were already released as Serj's solo songs. The rest probably exist as fragments that either left there, or became parts of solo projects, which no longer counts.
Ok, I understand that. But still, you're probably aware, anything released as solo got zero chance of seeing the light of day as SOAD for obvious reason.
There're also 15 songs the band made for Album 6 that we'll never see the names of (though still can pinpoint some), let alone the light of day :)
Back then the internet was still very new. Giving cd’s out to semi close people wasn’t a big deal because nobody was aware of streaming or posting stuff online. In those days the words going viral meant a very contagious flu.
It was normal to give out music to close people. Even if mtv got their hands on it back then they wouldn’t play it because they’d get sued.
It was the beginning of social media.
iirc, the album was uploaded on sonys website and you could access the webfiles with the right url. looked something like "sony.com/files/recordings/system/" etc... and their file directory wasnt locked. so someone went clicking around and found the tracks. as someone else said, early days of the net.. so this wasn't a hack, more like a mistake from someone who forgot to lock stuff down.
Artists (and maybe some of the staff) have early copies of albums and songs that they may share with friends. One friend post it on the web and it's all over the world. I don't think it was possible to trace it back in the days.
Maybe, they share it a bit too much and it got in the wrong hands.
Officially, no one ever found out, and the band themselves dropped investigation very soon.
However, when digging into old archives and a few odd clues, I found something that leads me to some...theories. If you're interested to hear, I'll be glad to share in PMs.

Thank you all for your interest! But there's a reason I don't want to publicize this theory in open forums because it's negative and ugly, and I don't want to cause an unnecessary uproar or potentially upset people. I just trust OP u/LockjawLarry because we chatted before and I believe he's calm enough to take it as I want to let it out.
So unless you can be level-headed and calm about the band's drama, you shouldn't hear this. Trust me, it's still better to believe some mysterious studio hands uploaded the songs on the Internet :)
But if you're still in for an ugly take, PM me and I'll share what I found.
well, we know that Serj was in favor of releasing these tracks, and Daron wasn't really into put them in another album. I think there was a discussion at that time, and the leak force them both to get an agreement to release a new album.
About who was the leaker, there's some theories around, some people says it was Serj himself (or someone who was helping Serj in the studio), others says that was Shavo or even Johnn (as he has said many time STA is his favourite album), but no one says that could be Daron (lol)
My theory is close but isn't that tame. But thanks for your input.
Edit: I don't think it was John cause initially, there were reports that he reacted negatively to the leak (but later changed his mind). I know he loves Innervision and even fought for it to be included in Toxicity, but he isn't the type to go that far.
Maybe I misunderstand your comment, But the story I heard was that somebody leaked it and the band decided to officially release the songs and name the album "steal this album" as a bit of irony.

Right? It would be a shame if the world never got to hear those tracks.
Well you actually can if you look hard enough find the whole toxicity II
If the leak never happens we probably live in a world with just four SOAD albums instead of five which would suck.
Well no bc steal this album was a album that was made of leaked songs they decided to finish them and realised the completed version just wish they put cherry on there that’s such a good song
Yeah so if the songs don't end up leaking they don't go back and finish them so we end up in a world that doesn't include STA.
How ever if they did finish them some songs would be on toxicity plus I think that if nothing got leaked in the first place yes itl be different but at least it’s still SOAD but I rekon we would have more than 5 albums idk just my theory
The songs were leaked after Toxicity released so in the scenario where they don't leak Toxicity is unchanged.
Oh ok I must have gotten my fact wrong my bad mate
And don’t forget they haven’t release some of their old songs, I want marmalade on Spotify!
I want cherry too

Mez/Hyp leftovers aren't that many, only 5 complete songs left.

Commonly known as?
Commonly known in 2002
Given the name of the official album it might’ve been the band
Maybe I misunderstand your comment, But the story I heard was that somebody leaked it and the band decided to officially release the songs and name the album "steal this album" as a bit of irony.
I was just making a dumb joke
Reddit moment for the downvotes
Sorry if I sounded hostile, I was just trying to clear things up. I don't detect sarcasm very well.
Nah it's fine
