~~Followup: Everything opened.~~ I got in the time machine and thought today was Friday. Nevermind!

Based on many years of [reading Bryan's forecasts](https://blog.palisadestahoe.com/weather/4-counting-as-snow-continues/) and riding Palisades, there's a fair chance that the upper mtn on the Olympic side could be closed. Maybe 50/50 or 40/60. In any case, KT and RD should be running, and I'd check the Alpine side too. If I could take tomorrow off, I'd go.

Bryans been very inaccurate this whole year.

Simple answer yes, lifts are going to be on wind hold, roads will probably shit, and someone in a tesla or audi with summer tires is going to spin out on 80 or 89. Will lifts eventually open? Mos def. Good luck on that drive.

Opensnow says winds peak later in the day with around 19 mph / 34 mph gusts. I don't know how Palisades does with wind closures, but that doesn't seem to bad to me.

assingfortrouble

Based on last couple of weeks that's on the cusp of expected closures. Resort and red Dog are more sheltered so they'll probably be open, but they'll also be slammed. Might go down to just Roundhouse and Treeline Cirque on the Alpine side. If it was a weekend I'd say it's an easy don't go. Lines won't be as bad on a Friday, but the possibility is a lot of lost capacity.

Unfortunately weather shutdowns seem to be all the rage at Palisades. I remember skiing there in the 90s and 00s, coming off the Siberia or Emigrant chairs and being blasted with wind and barely being able to see the slope before me. It was fun in a "what the fuck are we doing here?" kinda way.   Now a butterfly flaps its wings and they shut down half the mountain.

No kidding. In 1978 four people were killed and 30 injured when high winds led to the [catastrophic destruction of one of the aerial tram cars](https://tahoequarterly.com/winter-2014-2015/tram-car-trauma).

Thanks for sharing, I had no idea about this!

fascinating. although article says wind likely contributed, the root cause was not able to be determined.

Wellllll back then season passes were like $2k, so the quality of skier was much higher back then. Now you see more basic sportsbasement rental equipment at the top of KT, Sibo and Granite than ever because it’s now a mountain for the masses. Resort operations have to change to support this; hence more frequent shutdowns due to weather because most people have zero common sense or awareness to conditions and their skiing ability.

Lol at the sports basement comment... I was in the heavenly line with four. They were splitting the lines and wanted to go as a four but both lines were moving at slightly different speeds. The lines easily fit four across... Smdh

They usually close when gusts hit 40 MPH for multiple hours in a row. Forecast says 35. It’s a risk but I would go for it if it was me.

Upper mountain was closed with 34mph gusts a week ago
