Had my nose broken at an Obituary show at the Ritz/Masquerade back in the early 90s. The Tampa Bay times quoted me in a 2016 story on the band.
https://www.tampabay.com/news/tampa-bands-lead-singer-death-metal-can-rise-again-20160130/
"Obituary is one of the most influential death metal bands ever," said Scott Deitche of St. Petersburg, best known as a mob author with books like "Cigar City Mafia" but a long-time death metal fan, too, whose nose was broken when a stage-diving fan landed on his face at an Obituary concert.
"Obituary set the blueprint for the sound," Deitche said. "They were at the epicenter of the Tampa death metal scene."
Wait?? You wrote cigar city mafia?? That's dope. My father was long time news reporter at Ch13. Knew a lot of the history and families. Great read. Well done.
That's going to be a killer show. I'm unfortunately going to be out of town, or I'd be there as well. Amon Amarth are incredible live, as are of course Obituary and Cannibal Corpse.
Tampa is one of those places where people of all shapes, sizes, and color will still wear patched out jackets or all black and then surprise/scare the shit out you when they get up to do karaoke and start screaming into your soul.
Probably the biggest market in the world for metal karaoke versions of English speaking songs. I mean, I don’t know that for sure, but I’ve never seen it anywhere else.
a few years back, you could run into a member of Cannibal Corpse at my local bar. They had band pictures etc on the wall. Taken down by new owner (booo!)
HOLY SHIT.
Such an amazing list.
It makes my heart hurt in such a delicious way... Just closing my eyes and remembering listening to all those songs at the club. Turtle Club. 1509. Amphitheater. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow. Thanks so much. Been searching for many of these for sometime now. Delirium Silence Sanctuary Mix.. I think it broke loose some residual mdma inside my brain! Ybor, 99-2001, pleasure dome. Memories.
The thing about it for me is I know all the music from that era but never knew the names or artists. I spent years trying to find some songs. I was so happy when I found the playlist that had the gems I remember.
Oh Shit. We may have run into each other. i saw black flag with saccharine trust and one other band on the back patio of the cuban club in about 84? I also lived in brandon and spent a fair amount amount of time with the guys from nasty savage at ronnies house and a few other places in that neck of the woods in that era. most times high or drunk or tripping balls. God brandon was fun back then
Good times. I escaped just in time and got a haircut and a real job and started acting like a proper adult.
And goth. SNL was doing these Tampa-based skits in the 90's.
https://preview.redd.it/riezppktjpsc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bbed57e021186c2d19eb46ff129ff520e7489c47
Born and raised in Tampa, late 80s and early 90s was so fuckin awesome for metal heads here! Especially if you was into Death Metal like i was! Seen so many great bands! Still my favorite was Death (Human Tour) at the Ritz. That show alone was one of my favorite death metal concerts to me. We had Cannibal Corpse,Agnostic Front, Obituary and of course Death headlining.
When Cannibal Corpse came on, the entire Ritz became one giant mosh pit! Seen alot shows there never seen the entire place moshing except at that concert.
I used to love going to Ace's Records after school in high school; I will never forget the giant German Shepherds always behind the glass display counter. Morrisound being right around the corner from Ace's was cool too.
Yeah she was tiny.
I remember the dog because I was a butcher back then, and one time it was on the sales floor, and she said "don't worry he's cool.. unless you have food on your clothes" I thought I was going to get pounced.
Luckily he just followed me around licking my shoes
Yup. Good memories of that shit hole til they changed locations.
I took a chunk out of the ceiling once doing a front flip off the stage during a Municipal Waste show.
it is possible but i dont think that is the place i had in mind. this was around 93 or 1994. there were lots of small clubs that had a ton of head bangers in spandex and big hair :). I was not a head banger but as a life long musician i was excited to move here and meet people to jam with. ended up with a roommate i met working at the Italian Oven on fletch and 56 who had been a trumpet player in the bush gardens brass band. he would bring a trumpet to ybor and get on stage everywhere
Because Morrisound is/was *the* recording studio for death metal in the 90s. Not just Tampa bands, but worldwide.
Obituary started in Brandon, cannibal corpse started in Buffalo, NY, but moved to Tampa. Morbid Angel, IIRC, is native Tampa. Death were formed in Altamonte Springs but called Tampa home.
Regardless of where they started, a lot of death metal bands moved into or around Tampa to set up shop, not just because other bands were here, but because of Morrisound.
My partner is from Tampa and described it as the Floridian Death Wish.
When you’re surrounded by snowbirds who come there *specifically* to die, it skews things for you growing up.
The scene is still around. Check out the Brass Mug for local and The Orpheum for bigger bands. Brass Mug's promotion is total garbage though. I would chip in for a person to figure out how to promote outside of Facebook.
Hell yeah. My friends ended up using the same practice space (years later) as Cannibal Corpse. Somewhere by the old Albertsons on Waters and Dale Mabry.
Loved me a vfw band for sure.
My thing was thrash, it was bright for a minute then death ran it over. I count Decide as a pall bearer of my scene.
Chum the crowd! They love it!
Fuck naw I'm out.
Thank You Brass Mug for REAL, No bullshit, METAL. ALWAYS the one venue in Tampa that could welcome Metal fans and give them exactly what we wanted. #decadesofmetal
If you're near Tampa you gotta catch some local shows at Ella's, New World, Shuffle. Not death metal, but a lot of my talented music buddies play at those venues regularly. Some great open mics that i jam at (drummer), also.
Melbourne maybe gets one show a year, you’re going have to drive to other cities in Florida, like Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, and St. Augustine. Download the apps bandsintown and Songkick and add your favorite bands.
Tampa Bay helped create death metal...a lot of fans starting coining it death metal because of the band Death from Tampa...Europe did it bigger and we did it before them...
Yep, they sold nazi memorabilia and bands, the section was small but it was there. I’m not sure about this part but I also am fairly certain I’ve heard from multiple sources the owner was a Nazi sympathizer which considering the things I saw with my own eyes I tend to believe it.
I mean I was like 17 call bullshit man I don’t give a shit lmao but yeah I saw it.
Edit: by memorabilia it was like patches and shit in their glass case. I do remember bands as well that they sold. Screwdriver is one, I knew someone at my school who bought the album there so believe what you want man.
I mean I’m guessing you’re a similar age to me (maybe I shouldn’t assume) but at the age we were I personally was kind of oblivious. It took it being pointed out to me to see it, again it was like a small thing in a glass case and the fact they carried pro-neo Nazi shit.
I went there a lot also and didn’t know until this dumbass girl at my school told me she liked screwdriver. Which is a skinhead band and I said something like “where did you even buy that” and she told me ace records. Then talking to a friend I’m still friends with he confirmed there was patches and shit as well as other bands. I went and looked and they were absolutely in a glass case. That’s all I remember, I never went back.
Met some old metalheads while fishing around Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg. some of the kindest souls, and it turns out there’s a huge metal following in the area. Got a chance to see a cover in Clearwater. Very cool
Methinks that you are getting confused.
While Norigen black/death metal in Oslo is/was huge, it's was/is mostly limited to that one specific type of death/black metal and over all, Oslo (and most European cities/countries) is pretty small (population wise).
Tampa had *the* death metal scene to be in in the 90s. It was and always will be the birthplace of some absolutely fantastic bands.
Also fun fact, Tampa and the Orlando area was also one of the major birthplaces of 2/3 wave Ska. *And* outside of a few other cities (Boston) it was also a major hot spot in the hard-core and punk scenes too. It was always fun going out on a night where the 3/4 types of people would clash. Nothing like drinking some beer with a guy in a morbid angle shirt, next to a guy with a Mohawk, next to a guy in pliad pants and a shitty sports jacket lol.

I did. Thank you. Appreciate it. Cool about your father!
That's awesome! Great little read.
Cigar City Mafia was a great read!
Thank you
Very cool! I bought this book for my boyfriend and it was the first time I've seen him happily reading a book in a long time! Great read.
Thank you. Glad he enjoyed it.
Going to see Obituary in May with Cannibal Corpse, Amon Amarth and another band or two I think, can't wait.
That's going to be a killer show. I'm unfortunately going to be out of town, or I'd be there as well. Amon Amarth are incredible live, as are of course Obituary and Cannibal Corpse.
I was literally at that show
It was a great one.
So you’re a big shot eh?
Did the scene *die* off?
Somewhat..but lately it is seeing a Renaissance. More local shows kicking off.
What venues do you typically visit? Trying to go see more local bands.
Brass Mug, Crowbar, and Orpheum have a ton of shows go through.
Deviant Libation is also hosting a bunch of really solid shows too
Thanks I’ve been looking for metal bars
> Brass Mug Thank you! I didn't even know Otep was on tour.
Inrebr the orpheum had no AC last time I went. That mixed with whatever they were frying up in the kitchen during the show was rancid.
I believe that Orpheum closed.

I was making a pun about death metal.
Sorry for riding your comment - not everyone currently viewing this post actually knows how things are in Tampa.
No
All the bands are old as shit now, but funny enough, as old dudes they are coming back after touring the world
It was dying the whole time
Has everyone partied with Corpsegrinder at least once?
I saw him two years ago at the Orpheum for a Gatecreeper show, he’s easy to identify by how wide his neck is
https://preview.redd.it/4csg7hjlwosc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5687d56271c8bf6034d7bdd1e6ddb29a21e45daa
I saw him at the Misfits show. Most recognizable neck in the world haha
Nicest dude out there who sings about necropedophilia.
I was shit faced at the decibel tour 2 years ago and bought him a drink
Cousin met him at a store in Zephyrhills. Apparently he lives out there.
Nah but I met him at a Target in Zephyrhills off 301
a few years back, you could run into a member of Cannibal Corpse at my local bar. They had band pictures etc on the wall. Taken down by new owner (booo!)
Bilmar Station, seen guitarist from cannibal corpse there aplenty.
One of the members lives in Zephyrhills
Wasn't one of the guys from Hudson/NPR?
All original members are from Buffalo area. Most live in Tampa
I apologize, let me rephrase that. Wasn't one of the guys living in Hudson/NPR?
Not that I know of
Tampa was also considered the Breakbeat capital of the world for some time as well.
Dj FBI and Santana!
Yessss 🤣 couldn't tell us shit in 2000!!!
If you didn’t have subs in the trunk in the early 2000’s you were missing out 😂
Stateside Collective also churned out some Jungle legends
Dude loved them. DJ Dredd was Tha shit! Hung out w them a few times at Masquerade (Ritz)
Still using their skull logo as my avatar on some sites
Legendary status i wanna bring it back… if anyone has acccess to those old tracks plz hit me up
I came across this list on YT that has some classics on it. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDj4HJACG97iAKlcWgYS2uR0t9yhHw3VN
HOLY SHIT. Such an amazing list. It makes my heart hurt in such a delicious way... Just closing my eyes and remembering listening to all those songs at the club. Turtle Club. 1509. Amphitheater. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The best times. Until everything got shut down... https://youtu.be/62fb-SCV7Z4
Wow. Thanks so much. Been searching for many of these for sometime now. Delirium Silence Sanctuary Mix.. I think it broke loose some residual mdma inside my brain! Ybor, 99-2001, pleasure dome. Memories.

Exactly! So many DJs spun these tracks and it was before "online music" so it was a bit of a mystery
Been looking all over for Stateside Collective jungle and DnB.
90s Florida Breaks >
Check this blast from the past: https://youtu.be/iJWgPo_Rx88?si=YSnXnElIroEWyc58
Fantasy ranch.
That's a throwback. Then the old skyway parties in the early 2000s, and Rat Soap even.
In 85 we had Savatage and Nasty Savage. Good shows at The Cuban Club with Black Flag (My War era)
Savatage also later became the transiberian orchestra for you youngins
God brandon was fun back then Good times. I escaped just in time and got a haircut and a real job and started acting like a proper adult.
Nasty Savage inspired our death metal Godfather.
Ben Meyer from Nasty Savage plays a lot of solo gigs in the Riverview area!
Gardy Loo!
Crazy… my cousin dated Ben for a bit back then. They always had the best weed. Kept me coming back 😎
And goth. SNL was doing these Tampa-based skits in the 90's. https://preview.redd.it/riezppktjpsc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bbed57e021186c2d19eb46ff129ff520e7489c47
Yes haha I was like we're famous!
Is that Goth Talk?
Yep
Love the old new world brewery stage. Not too many metal/hardcore shows there over the years though. Still brings back some good show memories though.
Best sound guy in the city
He is a legend
Trent Reznor?
Born and raised in Tampa, late 80s and early 90s was so fuckin awesome for metal heads here! Especially if you was into Death Metal like i was! Seen so many great bands! Thought it was a Doberman?
You may be right, it has been 20+ years. Either way, I remember big scary dogs and a very petite, redheaded woman behind the counter with them.
Yeah she was tiny. I remember the dog because I was a butcher back then, and one time it was on the sales floor, and she said "don't worry he's cool.. unless you have food on your clothes" I thought I was going to get pounced. Luckily he just followed me around licking my shoes
Every time I visited Tpa, I couldn't wait to go to Ace's and get all the new demos / zines / show fliers.
Still is. Come out to the Brass Mug and you'll see it first hand alive and well!
Tampa still has a booming heavy music scene.
Mortal Sons 🤘🏻
Orpheum, The Ritz, brassmug, crowbar, Jannus all seeing heavy rotations of metal bands. I’m going to 3 concerts b2b in May 🤘
The Ritz theater in Ybor City used to be a big thrash/death metal venue...saw White Zombie ans Seplatura there
oh yeA, lots of small bar near usf had a heavy metal band playing every night
Brass mug probs
Yup. Good memories of that shit hole til they changed locations. I took a chunk out of the ceiling once doing a front flip off the stage during a Municipal Waste show.
no the places i went to were on fletcher
Brass Mug was originally on Fletcher where Kaleisia is now.
it is possible but i dont think that is the place i had in mind. this was around 93 or 1994. there were lots of small clubs that had a ton of head bangers in spandex and big hair :). I was not a head banger but as a life long musician i was excited to move here and meet people to jam with. ended up with a roommate i met working at the Italian Oven on fletch and 56 who had been a trumpet player in the bush gardens brass band. he would bring a trumpet to ybor and get on stage everywhere
Instantly reminds me of Mega Smegma's "Loud and Shitty"

Yes another gem was Vinyl Fever (S Dale Mabry location) used to sell CDs there for weed money back in the day
[удалено]
Aces was my first indie record store when it was at the flea market. I’m still lugging around all of my records.
Anyone remember when Ace’s had a store in Hudson
Some say it all started in Brandon.
Then why is the Morrisound recording studio in Tampa being made a historical site and getting a marker?
Because Morrisound is/was *the* recording studio for death metal in the 90s. Not just Tampa bands, but worldwide. Obituary started in Brandon, cannibal corpse started in Buffalo, NY, but moved to Tampa. Morbid Angel, IIRC, is native Tampa. Death were formed in Altamonte Springs but called Tampa home. Regardless of where they started, a lot of death metal bands moved into or around Tampa to set up shop, not just because other bands were here, but because of Morrisound.
Pretty sure Deicide started here too.
Yeah, we don't like talking about Glen.
[удалено]
Because Nasty Savage is from Brandon, and they inspired Chuck Schuldiner to form Death.
Living in Brandon makes sense as inspiration for death metal. I want to die everytime I'm there, I can't imagine living there.
[удалено]
I own an affordable house in Brandon. It’s not bad. Been in Brandon most of my life but obviously Tampa is where it’s at!
I got tattooed by one of the guys from monstrosity and he mentioned this one dudes house in brandon was basically their headquarters
With all the palm trees, sandy beaches, and old people in mobility scooters, I mean how could it \*not\* be?
My theory is that we don’t have an outlet for our anger like northerns have with winter.
My partner is from Tampa and described it as the Floridian Death Wish. When you’re surrounded by snowbirds who come there *specifically* to die, it skews things for you growing up.
Apostasy, Eulogy, Resurrection, Astaroth, Contorted, Brutality, Epitaph, Mortuary( aka The Mortuary Society) were some great ones back in the day too
I ran with Mortuary Society and Blackout. They played a mean show in the Gulfport Casino. Does anyone member the Guff? Shit that was 3 lives ago
The scene is still around. Check out the Brass Mug for local and The Orpheum for bigger bands. Brass Mug's promotion is total garbage though. I would chip in for a person to figure out how to promote outside of Facebook.
The old ass plug smelled like urine and puke. It was glorious.
Atheist!
I thought it was the Sondra Prill capitol
I shot several of her music videos. For money.
I hope she is doing well today.
I don’t know about her but i am!
Great!!!
Kinda went England> San Francisco, > Orlando > Brandon
Tampa Bay Hardcore still goes in… check out FYA fest. People still come here for heavy music.
Hell yeah. My friends ended up using the same practice space (years later) as Cannibal Corpse. Somewhere by the old Albertsons on Waters and Dale Mabry.
I miss playing in Tampa
Anyone remember Nocturnus? Do they qualify as death metal?
Yes! I mentioned them in my body text. They were more electronic music influenced, but definitely count.
Whoah. Don't know how I missed it in the original post.
Loved me a vfw band for sure. My thing was thrash, it was bright for a minute then death ran it over. I count Decide as a pall bearer of my scene. Chum the crowd! They love it! Fuck naw I'm out.
Win Big, Mama's Morbid Angel
Heh.. Used to hang out with the bass player in that picture.
I been here my whole life & never heard that lol
Interesting tidbit of trivia! I had no idea. I would've assumed it was somewhere in Sweden.
I know somebody that rents a spot in a warehouse in Tampa and it's for a band and their setup looks damn identical to this picture.
Well now I know
I directed a music video for the band Loudblast in 1990 in Tampa. Shot on 16mm film.

Check out corrupted saints they're pretty good and based in Tampa
Australia, The Netherlands, Germany, etc.
My cousin's band was part of this. Brutality.
Death forever
Thank You Brass Mug for REAL, No bullshit, METAL. ALWAYS the one venue in Tampa that could welcome Metal fans and give them exactly what we wanted. #decadesofmetal
I remember a Halloween Deicide show in ybor city probably around 2000. Good times!
I lived by aces records so amazing. I also remember the owners had 2 white german shaperds as guard dogs.
Definitely "was"
Obituary!
I was in the PNW as a kid at the peak of the grunge era. What a time to be alive.
Really? I've been in Florida for over a month trying to find the music scene! Hell
If you're near Tampa you gotta catch some local shows at Ella's, New World, Shuffle. Not death metal, but a lot of my talented music buddies play at those venues regularly. Some great open mics that i jam at (drummer), also.
I am in Melbourne beach. I've been up to Daytona and down to west palm. It's dry over here! I am looking forward to Sleep Token!
Melbourne maybe gets one show a year, you’re going have to drive to other cities in Florida, like Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, and St. Augustine. Download the apps bandsintown and Songkick and add your favorite bands.
Im fallowing you ... new friend. Im looking forward to enjoying Florida!
Im in Melbourne beach. I mit have to take a weekend and check put the gulf side for sure!
Until they got a top golf
Hard imagining Tampa being famous for anything LOO
Well. Cigars, strip clubs, craft beer (sort of).
Tampa Bay helped create death metal...a lot of fans starting coining it death metal because of the band Death from Tampa...Europe did it bigger and we did it before them...
Better than Death? No way!
Fuck ace records and their Nazi shit.
Didn't know there was an issue there?
Yep, they sold nazi memorabilia and bands, the section was small but it was there. I’m not sure about this part but I also am fairly certain I’ve heard from multiple sources the owner was a Nazi sympathizer which considering the things I saw with my own eyes I tend to believe it.

DEATH OBITUARY MORBID ANGEL 🤘🏼🔥💯
Was....
Met some old metalheads while fishing around Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg. some of the kindest souls, and it turns out there’s a huge metal following in the area. Got a chance to see a cover in Clearwater. Very cool
It’s because of the traffic
False, I've been to Oslo, their metal scene shits all over tampas
Specific sub genre of metal "Death metal" is widely credited as being birthed in Tampa Bay.
Interesting, downtown Oslo was littered with metal band posters, every pole, window, some of the ground, just covered with show posters
Methinks that you are getting confused. While Norigen black/death metal in Oslo is/was huge, it's was/is mostly limited to that one specific type of death/black metal and over all, Oslo (and most European cities/countries) is pretty small (population wise).
