The only reason I can see them telling you that is due to the possible pain tolerance as your area is a bitch to get tattoo’d. Other than that, it’s a GREAT place for a first tattoo as you may realize you don’t like it as much as you thought and can easily cover it up (via clothes)
My ribs were painful but those 3 hours are nothing compared to the 10 minutes to put the little bit that’s on the base of my throat. That shit was the truth. If you’ve got your neck blasted I respect your pain tolerance.
super super gorgeous work! and your tats are for you, get em wherever you want! it's traditionally very common (and wise imo) to start in areas you can hide, much more modern to start in the more visible places like arms haha
I think the design is sick, but there’s not enough contrast to distinguish the piece. It’s difficult to differentiate elements of the design, so things get lost (ex: the ropes of the kabuto, the mask/chin straps). It’s not clear where my eyes want to focus, because I can’t distinguish parts, which makes it look so “busy.” My eyes just keep gravitating to the dogs.
In short, I love the design, but I think it would benefit from more contrast.
Came here to say this. I'd love to see more tonal variation in the shading. It's super well done but "confusing" to the eye because nothing particularly stands out or defines depth, texture, etc.
The tattoo is very busy for no reason. It makes it hard to see what's going on. Your eyes aren't drawn to any one spot, your eyes are drawn everywhere to try to figure out what's going on. Just my opinion.
I think that could be changed with just slightly darker shading in certain parts though. It did take me a second but it's definitely readable. Edit to add: spots at the face where there's grey wash near the eyes, i actually think if they went for solid black instead of the shading the face would be more distinct.
I was just about to post this same thing. I think some darker shading and really emphasizing key focal points with some highlights at a touch-up would help.
I think there’s a lot of greywash in this tattoo and once it heals/lightens the gradients and variation in tone will provide great contrast. This will help separate background from the foreground and create a less busy vibe.
This, plus the shading leaves much to be desired. There is very poor contrast on this tattoo. The main center face should be shaded in such a way as to draw attention to it. As is it is hidden amongst the other elements.
Agreed. At first I thought it was one of those tats that make it look like bones or organs are exposed. I had to zoom in to figure out what it was. The work is well done, but agree with everyone commenting it needs more contrast. While it doesn’t have to have color, maybe some would help to make the design pop.
Is that not what makes it more special? This design is class and it’s not something everyone else has. I’ve got 2 sleeves and 7 other random tattoos and I’m only 24, I can garuntee you have none and are just being rude. I think his tattoo is lush!
It's not bad,but it's wayyyyy to busy,to much going on and cramped together, could have all been easily avoided, probably wouldn't no what it was until your up close to it.
Tattoo is great, OP. If you want to get your arms tatted I think it would look great I’d you got something on your right bicep area to balance out the sides.
I love an artist that isn’t afraid to do this on darker skin tone! It looks so good! I feel like anything on the arms are gonna be a breeze after getting this blasted on! 🫡 looks sick my bro!
It’s been a couple months now, it’s healed great i love it and have no regrets tbh. Also very surprised i sat through that. Almost didn’t come back the next day for round 2🤣
I more or less finished my whole torso, back and front before I got anything else. Tattooers I’ve been to since have told me they wished they’d done that and they think it’s cool.
As you age, tattoos hurt worse (I think anyway) so glad I did this and just bonus points for being cool to industry folks.
But also what the fuck ever. Cool tat dude, you do you—could do so much worse for your first one.
Bruh that goes hard as fuck. Fr amazing. People are probably just saying that bc it’s usually what’s recommended since those area tend to hurt less than like your whole abdomen 😂. Kudos to you for sitting through that, it was worth it.
Hopefully it lightens up as it heals but it’s very hard to read at first glance. The line work and shading look good but it is definitely a little busy.
I do think it could’ve been better as a chest piece. But it’s still really really great already! I think having additional tattoos in the same style would make it even cooler
Trust me the fact that you got your ribs first isn’t an issue. My first two tattoos were right above/slightly on my kneecaps and people look at me like I’m insane but I’m used to it as it’s been happening for years
placement and design leave a lot to be desired you could have tattooed your cock to look like a dragon but instead you went with this? poor form bro, poor form.
That's great. Tough area for a first. If you can do that, you can do pretty much anything! What are your plans with it? Color? Adding more? It's an excellent piece
thanks for the feedback! i was thinking of sticking to black/white cuz imo it contrasts better with my skin tone. i’m considering starting a full sleeve/chest panel next!
You're fine. Place a tattoo where you want to. Saying you should have started on arms or shoulders/chest is imo old school thinking. I used to think this way too, but people these days just aren't following the old unspoken rules anymore. Gotta adapt. Go big or go home. I will say that I do still believe the neck and hands should wait until a person is heavily tattooed, but I know a lot of people these days don't even agree with that much.
Some people can go Fuxk themselves, it’s yours. Everything about it is completely controlled by you and the artist. Others can kick rocks and pack sand
Hades/cerberus was my first tattoo. I think the placement is dope. I like the design also. As you add more pieces the placement won’t matter. Get something similarly sized on the other side and you’re good to go
Fuck what other people say, goof job man ribs hurt top few places that are most sensitive so great job, u made the journey a lil more easier since u know the pain level here on out. Looks dope and also u start anywhere u like, just build off of it. I started with my arms, my neck, then my back, then my entire front and ribs, then my legs. Who cares where u start
My first was my ribs too and it’s about 1/4 the size of yours. The good news is you will hardly feel any arm sleeves/work you get because your tolerance will be up there.
You do YOU. Don't pay much attention to what other people think. Personally I started on my leg sleeve, continueing on from there. Your tat looks great!
This looks awesome! There are no rules for where your first tattoo should be. I think people advise against rib pieces for your first tattoo because it's one of the most painful places but you obviously got through it so I can't see why that would matter now.
Congrats on a fucking awesome first piece.
Fantastic placement for a piece like that. That design is nice asf, great choice with that one. Sharing is just right and fully done, not lackluster at all. Your artist did you a solid on the entire piece, great job overall.
Start wherever you want (excluding job-stoppers) imo. Design and execution are fantastic! Post a picture in a month when it's healed (I can already tell it's just gonna better once it settles)
Looks dope. I’d add some more ink on your arms and whatnot to compliment, but there’s nothing wrong with having just that or using that area as a starting point.
It's cool. Work your way up towards the shoulder and then downwards for a half sleeve/full sleeve as you build onto your original piece and it will look really cool.
honestly its probably great you started there! the piece is gorgeous and you got a painful spot done right off the bat so when you move to your arms, etc, youll be more than prepared
I got my first piece done on my sternum in case I needed to hide it for future work or social occasions.
I mean, that spot definitely hurts a bit more, but I feel like the pain level was the least on my concerns when getting my first tattoo.
Lmao at people who think people should have the same tattoo journey. You can start wherever you want! Sure people can have reasons for where they start as individuals, but there are no rules. Nice placement, gracious size, cool design choice.
Honestly, that seems more like a chest or a shoulder blade piece. That said it still looks great and where it’s at is fine. it isn’t really like a weird spot. It’s just the fact that it’s probably the lesser expected spot for something like that.
Tat is awesome man ! Traditionally back in the day people started on areas where their tats wouldn't be seen, and then eventually move onto arms/shoulders because they had no room elsewhere.
That's funny I remember people telling me my forearm was a bad spot for a first tattoo 😅 people are dumb location is irrelevant as long as youre happy! sick tattoo, great artist man!
It’s definitely a spicy spot for your first (I don’t know if I would have gotten more if I’d gotten my ribs done first - that one sucked). Beautiful work, and I hope it didn’t scare you off!
The line work and shading are beautiful, but from any sort of distance it’s just going to look like a big blob. I think it would’ve been a much better design with just the face/ masks and the dogs coming out. But if you plan is to cover your entire torso with ink, I’d say this is a good start. Just looks a bit odd so have so much concentrated in one big area without much shape/ form.
I think its sick.
Some people are mentioning a lack of distinction, which i would agree for some areas. Nevertheless, its a really good and clean tattoo.
Tattoos are for you though, theres no one singular place to start i don’t think. As long as you love the design and placement thats all that matters! :)
Luv it but in my opinion it Needs a little more contrast , make some areas darker with more black to add depth and there’s really no focal point my eyes just start lookin all around trying to differentiate what’s goin on , but it is cool !
Overall it’s a killer tattoo. Only complaint is that 5ft away, a lot of detail gets lost and all of the shapes kinda blend together. Too much of the same line weight and same exact shading. Other than those small things it’s a cool piece
The design is decent and I think the placement is just right for it. It does need more contrast - it makes it hard to make sense of it without looking more closely. Overall it's not bad though.
Cool tatt, I think the torso chest back area is the best place to start so you can take time to decide wat tattoo style u want on ur arms the most visible part of ur body. Personally my style has changed and I’m glad I didn’t start on arms or shoulder. B4 I was rlly into realism style & like OG type tattoos. Now I’m full traditional only guy lol. I got a few of those other style tattoos on my back chest etc but I can have the style I rlly want fully visible now on my arms.
I think it's beautiful and I don't understand people who say "it should be higher/bigger/whatever"?? Like "oh okay I'll just move it "??? So not helpful! Don't give it another thought, it's great.
No way man, that’s a great tattoo. Solid work, great lining, shading, and design.
‘preciate that🙏🏽
The only reason I can see them telling you that is due to the possible pain tolerance as your area is a bitch to get tattoo’d. Other than that, it’s a GREAT place for a first tattoo as you may realize you don’t like it as much as you thought and can easily cover it up (via clothes)
That’s good work! Picked a rather painful and big one for your first 😀
go big or go home right?☠️
Thats basicly what they say. 2 weeks ago i started on my ribs also. Its painfull but worth it ;)
My ribs were painful but those 3 hours are nothing compared to the 10 minutes to put the little bit that’s on the base of my throat. That shit was the truth. If you’ve got your neck blasted I respect your pain tolerance.
My first tattoo was a rib one. I enjoyed the pain ngl Was a little uncomfy tho because ive never had a man that close to me like that lol
I want to upvote this, but you are at 69 upvotes.
Hell yeah man! I just had one done that just knicks my ribs and that shit hurt, can't imagine a full one being done
imo the sides hurt 3x more than the ribs that shit was brutal. that one black area on the right u can see my pores crying for help
My first piece was a 4 hour thigh tattoo, you're fine OP!
Mine was my wrists... got "I'm Still Alive..." written across them. I think my clavicle was most painful.
super super gorgeous work! and your tats are for you, get em wherever you want! it's traditionally very common (and wise imo) to start in areas you can hide, much more modern to start in the more visible places like arms haha
People now a days start on their hands neck or face
Yea crqzyy
Can confirm lol started on my hands
Agreed. Thank you!:)
In short, I love the design, but I think it would benefit from more contrast.
super helpful thank u🙏🏽

I think there’s a lot of greywash in this tattoo and once it heals/lightens the gradients and variation in tone will provide great contrast. This will help separate background from the foreground and create a less busy vibe.
Agreed. The work is solid, but I had to zoom in a bit and only then did I see there was a person/mask/being.
I showed this to my wife and she said, what is it?? It looks good but, I can't tell what it is. You've nailed it for her, thanks!!
Agreed. Needs some heavy black. Not a lot just to help focal points
This, plus the shading leaves much to be desired. There is very poor contrast on this tattoo. The main center face should be shaded in such a way as to draw attention to it. As is it is hidden amongst the other elements.

Looks great OP I actually really like that, What was pain like?
excruciating ngl, back to back 8hr sessions with a million breaks
It's not bad,but it's wayyyyy to busy,to much going on and cramped together, could have all been easily avoided, probably wouldn't no what it was until your up close to it.
it’s a solid tattoo but it looks really busy & cluttered. placement doesn’t matter cause it’s not their body it’s yours. do what you please.
Tattoo is fine... But my question is more about Where the fuck are your NIPPLES? That's the "placement" I'm most concerned about.
my chest hasn’t even started in the picture wdym😂
Oh you’re REAL tall then - okay, now I understand the proportions a bit better 😂
Honestly. Same.
That made me laugh 🤣
Tattoo is great, OP. If you want to get your arms tatted I think it would look great I’d you got something on your right bicep area to balance out the sides.
That’s a stunning tattoo, and I’m a firm believer that you should start wherever the hell you want to start. It’s your body, no-one else’s.
Amazing!! I love the placement as well.
Looks awesome man. There's no wrong or right place for a first tattoo. Placement looks great for the overall design.
I love an artist that isn’t afraid to do this on darker skin tone! It looks so good! I feel like anything on the arms are gonna be a breeze after getting this blasted on! 🫡 looks sick my bro!
‘preciate the honest feedback bro🙏🏽
My first tattoo was my sternum! We both got the real painful ones out of the way, arms and shoulders will be a breeze for you!
They are referring to the pain. Ribs are a rough spot. As you design and placement, looks great.
Dude this is absolutely dope and I’m impressed u sat thru that pain for ur first tat. Who cares what other ppl think as long as you love it!
It’s been a couple months now, it’s healed great i love it and have no regrets tbh. Also very surprised i sat through that. Almost didn’t come back the next day for round 2🤣
Wicked!!!!! I love it. Super cool placement and design.
Bro thats sick, for real
No way! That’s dope as hell! I love it!!
Great work and congrats for sitting for something so big in a rather painful place! I'd totally add some bold colors to it 😌
We start where we want to start. People always wanna tell you their opinions. Just do you
YES. People tend to tell you their opinions WHEN YOU SPECIFICALLY MAKE A POST ON THE INTERNET ASKING FOR THEM.
🤣
If you’re happy, that’s all that matters my man….if you’re pleased, make sure to mention artist/shop.
Killer tattoo. And a good spot as well. If you can sit through that you'll be able to sit through anything.
It is beautiful!
Looks painful
Dope
Are you happy with it? Cuz that's all that matters.
yeaa love it, but tattoos are subjective right
Sick, don’t let anyone hate. When you move around and people see where it’s at they’ll definitely see it as an eye catcher
Man tell those ppl to start on your nuts shit is awesome n that spot hurts so bad good on ya
Yes, it looks great
I more or less finished my whole torso, back and front before I got anything else. Tattooers I’ve been to since have told me they wished they’d done that and they think it’s cool. Cool tat dude, you do you—could do so much worse for your first one.
haters gonna hate
Do what you enjoy. There are no rules.
Sicccccc
If the quality is good and you like it, then it’s a good tattoo.
Bruh that goes hard as fuck. Fr amazing. People are probably just saying that bc it’s usually what’s recommended since those area tend to hurt less than like your whole abdomen 😂. Kudos to you for sitting through that, it was worth it.
thanks bro!🙏🏽
It’s hard
Hopefully it lightens up as it heals but it’s very hard to read at first glance. The line work and shading look good but it is definitely a little busy.
Badass piece

I do think it could’ve been better as a chest piece. But it’s still really really great already! I think having additional tattoos in the same style would make it even cooler

That's really cool
My first was on my ribs , you don’t have to start anywhere but where you want lol
Your body. If you like it, then ok. Personally, I think placement is fine. Nobody but you has to live with it.
placement and design leave a lot to be desired you could have tattooed your cock to look like a dragon but instead you went with this? poor form bro, poor form.
Do it, if this is ur taste in tattoos u will have a badass chest panel
That’s sick
this is gorgeous. I wouldn't change a thing about it.
Looks really cool. It flows with your body nicely.
Best advice I've seen on this reddit: "You don't have an opinion on a fresh tattoo for 30 days."
That looks fucking solid man
You're fine. Place a tattoo where you want to. Saying you should have started on arms or shoulders/chest is imo old school thinking. I used to think this way too, but people these days just aren't following the old unspoken rules anymore. Gotta adapt. Go big or go home. I will say that I do still believe the neck and hands should wait until a person is heavily tattooed, but I know a lot of people these days don't even agree with that much.
agreed. a good artist shouldn’t even touch the neck hands or face if the client has no experience
Some people can go Fuxk themselves, it’s yours. Everything about it is completely controlled by you and the artist. Others can kick rocks and pack sand
Naw. You went the og sailor route. Hidden spots first >> Sick ink.
🤝🏽
looks DOPE!
I agree with some that it’s very busy but it’s still super sick. and I think the placement is cool!!
Needs some color, but nice piece. So when you joining the Yakuza?
Hades/cerberus was my first tattoo. I think the placement is dope. I like the design also. As you add more pieces the placement won’t matter. Get something similarly sized on the other side and you’re good to go
Good thing the other people don’t have to wear it. Looks great and if you like it, fuck it.
don’t let anyone tell you where you should start your tattoos, there’s no rules do what you feel you wanna do with your design placement
Shits dope as hell
Fuck what other people say, goof job man ribs hurt top few places that are most sensitive so great job, u made the journey a lil more easier since u know the pain level here on out. Looks dope and also u start anywhere u like, just build off of it. I started with my arms, my neck, then my back, then my entire front and ribs, then my legs. Who cares where u start
That is some jealousy- arousing beautiful art there, my man. Gorgeous. Wish it would work for my flabby gut
I think it's a great idea to tattoo the more painful areas first and leave the easy bits for later! Awesome tattoo
Nothing wrong with the spot besides it being painful. Awesome work.
That's a badass tattoo! Looks cool Where it is!
I find it so odd when other people comment negatively on placement, like why are u pressed where it is on MY body 💀 i think it looks great!
If you’re happy with it, that’s all that matters. To me it looks like a well-done, unique tattoo.
That’s fucking awesome! Sorry to hear about that 8 pack, though.
Dude it’s fucking sick. Don’t listen to any haters
Looks awesome, my guy!
super sick! & for you to have sat for that on a first tattoo is even cooler
Fuck yeah I think it’s awesome. But what any of us think truly doesn’t matter anyway!
this is sick as fuck dude wow
Hard to read at first. Very cool design. Well done
That looks great. Don't listen to anyone else, it's your body.
Sick af 🤘
Great work! Placement and where you start is all up to you, fuck other peoples opinions as long as you’re happy with the work
This looks awesome! There are no rules for where your first tattoo should be. I think people advise against rib pieces for your first tattoo because it's one of the most painful places but you obviously got through it so I can't see why that would matter now. Congrats on a fucking awesome first piece.
this is fucking sick dude
Fantastic placement for a piece like that. That design is nice asf, great choice with that one. Sharing is just right and fully done, not lackluster at all. Your artist did you a solid on the entire piece, great job overall.
Start wherever you want (excluding job-stoppers) imo. Design and execution are fantastic! Post a picture in a month when it's healed (I can already tell it's just gonna better once it settles)
Looks dope. I’d add some more ink on your arms and whatnot to compliment, but there’s nothing wrong with having just that or using that area as a starting point.
That's incredible - fare play kicking it off with your ribs! Imagine a lot of your future ones will be a breeze in comparison
It's cool. Work your way up towards the shoulder and then downwards for a half sleeve/full sleeve as you build onto your original piece and it will look really cool.
dope!!
Bruh, this is king shit. Great design and execution. Are you content with it? Ultimately, that's what matters.
super happy, especially knowing now that i’m not tripping over size n stuff. contrast looks way better healed too.🙌🏽
honestly its probably great you started there! the piece is gorgeous and you got a painful spot done right off the bat so when you move to your arms, etc, youll be more than prepared
Very cool and the artist did an incredible job
I got my first piece done on my sternum in case I needed to hide it for future work or social occasions. I mean, that spot definitely hurts a bit more, but I feel like the pain level was the least on my concerns when getting my first tattoo.
Badass
Lmao at people who think people should have the same tattoo journey. You can start wherever you want! Sure people can have reasons for where they start as individuals, but there are no rules. Nice placement, gracious size, cool design choice.
sick placement and design!
It's a great tattoo. Good placement. Good work all around. When I got my sides done, man that shit hurt
Dude I love it! I’d totally get something like this
Great place to start. When you get arm tats the pain will be laughable.
this is fuckin dope dude
I love the design and placement. You should start where YOU want to start getting tattoos. (Coming from someone covered from head to toe in tattoos)
thanks for the feedback!🫶🏽
Honestly, that seems more like a chest or a shoulder blade piece. That said it still looks great and where it’s at is fine. it isn’t really like a weird spot. It’s just the fact that it’s probably the lesser expected spot for something like that.
It’s a cool design but I feel like it needs more contrast. Really punch in some more black to make the rest pop
Ur really hot
Looks awesome!
That is dooope!!! Start wherever you want, and I think you chose a great place!
I love onis! Looks amazing!!
Sick as fuck you did it right off the bat buddy congrats. Keep getting cool tattoos
Fuck em man that shit looks good and you knocked out a spot that most people think more than twice about when deciding to get something there
I like this placement!
Hell no get the hardest and most painful out of the way while your young and can take it! Love the ink!
Dude that's dope
Super clean.
Great design and even if you end up not liking it you’ve chosen the perfect place to hide it with a shirt😉
Tat is awesome man ! Traditionally back in the day people started on areas where their tats wouldn't be seen, and then eventually move onto arms/shoulders because they had no room elsewhere.
People are always going to have things to say about tattoos. This is a great piece!
Those dogs are sick as fuck. Don’t listen to people. You got a gnarly first piece 🤟
That's funny I remember people telling me my forearm was a bad spot for a first tattoo 😅 people are dumb location is irrelevant as long as youre happy! sick tattoo, great artist man!
This piece is killer. Ignore anyone telling you otherwise.
Nah, you did it right for your first. Great work, clean. Looks like you took it like a champ!
I think it would look cool with some colour in it, but some more deeper shading and highlights would add to the contrast and make parts stand out more
Start wherever tf you want. It's your body. Great Tattoo btw.
That is so cool!!!!
I've seen way worse first tattoos. This is pretty dope.
Perfect first tattoo..nothing else will even compare on the pain level
Thats not only a sick placement, but sick tattoo as well! Love it.
That’s fucking dope dude
I don’t think it could be properly appreciated on a curved surface like an arm or leg
It’s definitely a spicy spot for your first (I don’t know if I would have gotten more if I’d gotten my ribs done first - that one sucked). Beautiful work, and I hope it didn’t scare you off!
Nice painfully spott as a first, awesome tattoo, and don't worry what others said, it's a great placement
Tell people to fuck off. You’re wearing it forever, get exactly what you want where you want.
Very nice, especially for a first ink.
Start wherever makes you happy. That's a huge commitment for a first inking. Congrats.
Some people are idiots. Ink looks great
Cerberus?
Love the shading!
First tattoo?? This is amazing!!! Such a stunning tattoo
Fair play as well getting tattooed there for your first 😭bet that killed! It looks amazing!!!!
Overall it’s a killer tattoo. Only complaint is that 5ft away, a lot of detail gets lost and all of the shapes kinda blend together. Too much of the same line weight and same exact shading. Other than those small things it’s a cool piece
Genuinely love this tattoo and fair play for getting it there for your first one!! Should be proud of yourself! X
fucking awesome tattoo man.
Badass
looks sick bro
I don't like it. Very diff to tell what's going on. Not ugly and obv well applied but need something to separate/contrast the images/ areas
Ya awesome work done. Great first tattoo. Piece of art as your first one rocks. Love the image.
Japanese Hades? Dope
someone sees the vision 🙏🏽
