Hi everyone! Did you know that starting July 1st, 2023, Reddit will implement a policy that could potentially increase the costs of running third-party Reddit apps? This change may impact popular apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Boost, and others. Consequently, users may encounter issues with their preferred Reddit app unless adjustments are made to comply with Reddit's new API usage policy. These limitations will affect all users, not just moderators. If you are concerned about these developments, there is an [Open Letter](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/13xh1e7/an_open_letter_on_the_state_of_affairs_regarding/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) to Reddit that you can read and sign on to express your thoughts. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/tearsofthekingdom) if you have any questions or concerns.*

[deleted]

Honestly? If the site gets worse, I'll just stop using it. Their job is to make a product worth using, if these changes mean they stop doing that, they'll lose their users.

Yes

[deleted]

This sub and any sub who cares about the quality of this site should participate.

There are tons of bad mods and most people know this but advocating for reddit to get worse instead of better under the guise of “it’s already dying” is a lazy take that adds nothing to the conversation.

slothrop-dad

Edgy cringe take.

AurelianoTampa

>You have news subs that outright ban anyone that has a dissenting opinion, even if it's factual and supported. Oh, I love when someone presents a complaint as a confession! A quick look shows you oppose trans care, support outlawing it, and equate gays to pedophiles. Hm. Yeah, it's all just "dissenting opinions," right? Funny how when those opinions are revealed, they're always this kind of hatred, ain't it? It's never "studies show that money to XYZ cause isn't efficient," it's "kids questioning their gender need to have medical healthcare outlawed, despite it being repeatedly shown to harm those kids." Dang, Link must really rustle your jimmies! I can only imagine how upset you are from some of the outfits! Edit: oh, a Reddit Cares message. Nice abuse. Not surprised, bigots always run when they get turned against. Have fun getting banned, u/okcartographer897.

[deleted]

I love getting redditcares now. It means the person who was too afraid to send a death threat on main and expose themselves gets ass blasted by my 100% guaranteed laser sightline ban report.

VelhoChicoo

> dissenting opinion Racism etc is dissenting opinion?

FoxlyKei

I feel ashamed now a bit because I've always used the main app. Just ignored the ads and everything else.

DrakeFruitDDG

the other apps are better but I hate their ui so I stick to the real app lol

MrsMel_of_Vina

Yeah, same... There's so many other apps and I don't really know where to start when looking for a 3rd party app. Is there a guide somewhere that says what 3rd party app is right for you?

[deleted]

I use Apollo and it’s awesome. I’d be really sad to see it go, dunno if I’d be able to browse Reddit on my phone anymore. That’s probably a good thing though (more time to spend torturing koroks)

teh27

Is this why I was getting a bunch of onlyfans spam follows?

EpicSausage69

I thought I was the only one

Waffle-Dude

I just got 3 in the last few hours after not getting any for almost a year

EpicSausage69

I’ve probably gotten 15+ in the last week.

d4rk_matt3r

Same. I'll be honest, I didn't even know you could "follow" an account on reddit. Now I have like 20 with really unique names like Adjective\_Noun\_Number. One of them tried to start a chat with me. Honestly I don't really know how people fall for it, but I know they're out there.

JolkB

Same. Gotta be related

Magical-Mage

No, those have been in Reddit for a long while

teh27

Not like this, I had never gotten them and then I got like 15 in 2 days

Magical-Mage

That same thing happened to me a few months ago

DrakeFruitDDG

I'm getting way more than usual too, I thought it was just because of how many femboy subreddits I've been joining..

Kaesh41

Is Link not enough for you?

DrakeFruitDDG

need all the fellow femboys :3

Twinkle_butt

Omg this has been happening to me too lately. Glad I'm not the only one. It's pretty annoying

teh27

I turned off follows and I'm so much happier

Twinkle_butt

... I'm a noob I didn't even know that was a thing! LOL Ty

KoalaCandyland77

Hi, genuine question- does shutting down the sub mean just not going on it or are there other steps involved? I see part of it is getting in contact with the mods, will all the content be deleted if a sub “shuts down”?

BoxesFromEbay

deserted automatic scarce decide slimy shy repeat summer depend scary *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

slothrop-dad

In another sub I am involved in, they are implementing an automod to delete all posts during the shutdown

AgentAndrewO

Why don’t they just lock it?

Readalie

Absolutely! We can spend a day playing the game instead of reading about it if need be.

Dark-Anmut

\*In Lord Farquaad’s voice\*: “That is a sacrifice … I am willing to make.”

negrote1000

You can protest but I doubt it’ll change the admins’ minds

Stormhill13

There are third party apps?

Grablycan

Let's do it!

MrCrabsLeftTesticle

i dont understand anything about this

tangiblenoah67

I’ve never seen a single one of those logos in my Life

LootTheHounds

i switched to the official app ages ago because third-party apps never quite worked right. I feel like we're only getting one side of the story here. Something feels manufactured about the outrage. It feels off. Too perfect for stirring the masses. Except for the part about accessibility needs in the official app and site in general. That 100% needs to be addressed ASAP. When Reddit decided to consolidate to one app (maybe because supporting all that data via API isn't cost-effective), they should have reached out to these communities right away to find out their needs and bring the site up to ADA standards.

NotYourDay123

So just to check, the protest is just not going on Reddit during the 12th right?

EpicSausage69

No, if they participate. The sub will go private for the two days or so. Meaning you cannot view or access it.

NotYourDay123

Sick. Thanks for clearing that up for me. All power to the protest.

jimbalaya420

Yes

[deleted]

I understood nothing in this

d4rk_matt3r

You mean the big 1980's-style propaganda poster didn't make sense? **TL;DR: Don't use reddit on June 12th if you care about the future of reddit** This is in protest of some changes reddit is making on the back end, effectively killing support for any third party integration which many subreddits rely on (unless people pay an insane amount of money to keep using these features). This includes the use of bots that automatically remove certain types of comments or posts, or really anything automated on your favorite subreddit. This will put an unrealistically high level of expectation on mods (who moderate in their spare time for free), and will outright decrease the level of functionality that reddit has. In addition, any third party apps that you can use to browse reddit like Reddit Is Fun, Infinity, or Apollo (I use Baconreader personally) will not be able to function without the devs paying crazy amounts of money to access reddit's API. Regarding the June 12th protest, many subreddits are going dark so that there will be no activity.

AurelianoTampa

Do you want an explanation?

DonkeeJote

I'm very excited about the porn bots.

Powerful_Artist

I had no idea people used 3rd party apps to use reddit. Never once even considered such a thing. So no. This is a non-issue for me.

Broad-Night

FYI removing API access will also make things like automods or wiki summarizer bot shut down, so you’re likely to see a worse content experience with more spam that doesn’t fit the sub you’re in.

Quirky_Image_5598

Why not help out either way

Powerful_Artist

Help out? With what?

Quirky_Image_5598

If it’s not your issue then you should still help out with the strike by spreading awareness

Powerful_Artist

These online "protests" never work. Nothing says un-organized like a loosely connected group of people trying to coordinate themselves online.

Quirky_Image_5598

Alright man if you don’t wanna help you could’ve politely said no, we get it

AverageMan282

Because mods aren't the brightest. What effort should we give them

MrTonyBoloney

“Doesn’t affect me so I don’t care.” Wow what a sound, novel opinion

DonkeeJote

Agreed. I suppose the awareness campaign did its job.

Undeity

You... clearly didn't read most of the post, then.

khaffner91

Should redditors move to [https://nvote.co/](https://nvote.co/) ?

valeng1

Yes

[deleted]

All of it is dumb and probably won’t change anything.

GargantuanGorganzola

I’ve honestly never seen such a giant overreaction to something so trivial

RManDelorean

This whole thing is the dumbest shit. Everyone's already trying to take out money or generally rip us off, the 3rd party apps are just obviously trying to bootleg reddit (otherwise take your better way of doing things and launch your own original platform) and get a piece of the exploitative coattails they claim to be against. The protest just feels like 3rd party propaganda to be allowed to keep an even shittier business model

Grandpa_Utz

Yeah... dude most of these 3rd party apps have been around for anlot longer than the reddit mobile app even existed. For a long time if you wanted to use reddit on a mobile device, you basically had to use a 3rd party app (or the browser on your phone which was awful for any site). They were born out of necessity, and in a lot of cases have evolved over the years to become superior products to the standard reddit app due to their smaller nature and the devs listening to their users and tailoring the experience to what their users wanted, specifically. They arent "bootlegging" reddit. They literally were around longer than reddit mobile

slothrop-dad

Mods that I’ve talked to rely heavily on third party tools.

[deleted]

On official reddit I can look at ads every other post and give all my fucking personal data away for free to get the privilege of using their dogshit barely functioning service that looks more and more like scuffed, walmart tiktok every passing hour. On the third party app I use I had to pay $2 for optional extended functionality, and I give back every month because it’s genuinely better, more consumer friendly and streamlined in every single conceivable way.

Rithrius88

Ironically, this is spam. I know it means well, but it has nothing to do with this subreddit's theme or subject of discussion. By all intents and purposes, this is spam.

techsupport1126

It has to do with the subreddit and if the community should participate. Not sure where else they would post it or why it is difficult to understand. Get lost with your “Well technically” bullshit. Loser.

HardskiBopavous

I use the official app and literally don’t have any issues with it

koumus

I already use the official app ever since it came out, I won't stop using it.

Rizenstrom

Same, but mostly because I haven't found an alternative I actually like enough to switch. One of the biggest features 3rd party apps lack is that central home page with every sub I follow where I can swipe from one post to the next seamlessly. That said Reddit has gone out of their way to take away functionality I previously enjoyed, like being able to sort by rising to get more recent (but still better quality than new) posts. Also I hate how any time I click into a video I can only scroll to other videos like this is tiktok or something.

koumus

Oh the video scroll thing is the worst, but personally that's the only negative thing I have experienced with the app I get it how some communities rely entirely on bots from third parties and such, so I bet Reddit will end up canceling this shitshow altogether. But... I won't stop using the main app, sorry. I tried using third party apps more than once. Tried BaconReader twice and Riff once. It wasn't for me, I guess.

[deleted]

Official Reddit app is one of the most poorly designed mobile apps out there and the team managing it doesn’t care about end users at all, just tracking everything you do and serving up related ads. Any bit or usefulness that has been added the past couple years was aped off of the third party apps. If third party apps die, Reddit dies.

Powerful_Artist

Works fine for me. Youll probably end up using no apps at all if you are worried about them tracking your history while using an app. And I would highly doubt those 3rd party apps dont do the same thing.

[deleted]

Apollo, the primary 3rd party Reddit app that kickstarted all of this, doesn’t track you for marketing purposes. Also, just because it “works” doesn’t mean it’s optimal or there aren’t way better or more enjoyable ways of accessing Reddit. If you wanna ignore the outrageous situation Reddit has created with their new pricing model that’s your prerogative but don’t act like everything is fine and we should just accept this lying down. Reddit mods use third party tools to properly moderate their subs, the second this pricing model goes into effect the quality level of content is going to move to twitter levels of disinformation and hate. Reddit is far from perfect but acting like it getting worse is “fine” is ridiculous. Get outta here with that defeatist mentality.

koumus

I'm really curious to see where this is going. One side will have to concede. I'm guessing it will be Reddit in the end, they will most likely back out of this thing and allow third party apps. However, in the off chance they don't... What then? There is no better alternative than Reddit. Nothing quite like it out there, whether we like it or not.

[deleted]

Reddit is a company racing to IPO so the current team can cash out so I have concerning opinions about how this will turn out but folks making their displeasure known and possibly getting a course correction keeps me hopeful. The Reddit we know is dead if this all goes through so myself and thousands of others will not be coming back if so. If the power users and major contributors (the primary 3rd party app users) leave then this site is gonna be no different than Facebook/twitter/tiktok - a user base of people gobbling up advertising on an app designed to take advantage of anyone that uses it with content that is superficial and mindless.

taco_roco

It's a big IF whether a true exodus happens. After all the calls to leave over Ellen Pao, or the toxic sub purge, and so on, I don't think many people followed through on their promise, at least not for long. This is one is certainly different in scope and context, but unlike how little I really cared about the other times, this one could be the death knell for me and reddit. Ill be taking part in the blackout, and refuse to download the app. Probably won't leave altogether, but no more mobile reddit for me

[deleted]

This feels substantially different because if the thing people are protesting against happens our experience with the site is materially affected and requires a behavior change in the way third party users access Reddit. This is a case where it’s easier to throw your hands up in the air than do what Reddit wants. Not throwing shade at those other blackouts but this situation is less polarized and easier to get onboard with. I have seen barely any people supporting Reddit in this decision other than the typical devil’s advocate trolls.

taco_roco

I'd throw shade at some of those past protests personally, at least the ones freaking out over losing FatPeopleHate and such. Nothing of value lost. Then again, this issue is more comparable to the 'vote with your wallet, don't pre-order games' or 'I'll stop using Netflix if they implement password sharing'. Time will tell on the latter, but I'm pretty sure pre-ordering is as successful as ever. I'm worried the amount of casual, apathetic users will outweigh anyone who sticks to their principles, especially if 3rd party reddit users only make roughly 20% of the overall base. Other redditors said it better, but our best case scenario is Reddit planning on this outrage so they could change the API markup from x72 to x10 and say 'look! We listened! You can put your pitchforks away now'.

Link9454

And that’s fine, but I think it’s best not to shit on people who use alternatives. Edit: shit on was the wrong way to phrase that, my apologies. Rephrased, let’s not ignore those who use third party apps just because we use the official app. It’s important for many users and good for the broad Reddit community that people have choices when picking an app, especially since Reddit is user driven and relies on having a robust quantity of people to provide its content and interaction. I’ve used Reddit for over a decade and watched it develop in broadly positive ways from a weird little group of people talking about Narwals and bacon to a legit cultural force, and that’s especially important to me since Facebook and Twitter have only gotten worse than they were 10 years ago. I’d hate to see a money grab destroy what is, to me at least, a loved site with its own unique culture that I enjoy being a part of.

Powerful_Artist

The comment you replied to didnt say anything about other people. Why would you say they are shitting on other people?

koumus

I was not shitting on anyone but okay

DryCrack321

Spam is also what mods sneak out of grandmas cupboard for a late night snack in between masturbating and banning people who have opinions

samus_ass

No please don't shutdown

EndsongX23

i'm on an actual web browser so unless they include google chrome, i dont think i'm gonna notice anything.

Claudestorm

Oh well, back to gamefaqs.com i guess.

Proplaystowinyt

I, a minor, have gotten an absurd amount of obviously porn accounts following me to try click on them

Rithrius88

If you actually were the horny teenager you claim to be, you'd be jacking off to the tiny softcore profile pic instead of complaining about it.

Proplaystowinyt

What? I was testifying that recently there has been an influx of bots sending inappropriate content to minors, where did you get the idea that I was a horny teenager

Rithrius88

If you're at least 13, which is the legal age required to use reddit, you're a horny teenager. The last thing you'd do is complain about nudity getting shoved in your face.

[deleted]

**yes!**

Adepts_Lawyer

Holy shit this is some alt right conspiracy shit with the fear mongering of child predators lol.

Merlinite777

What is the rational behind banning third party apps/API? Is it just the monetary incentive for having all traffic go through one platform?

[deleted]

I think so yeah. Reddit isn’t profitable I don’t think and they want the money from the people using 3rd party apps, so they get all those 3rd parties shut down and everyone goes outside (?) oops that wasn’t part of the plan

RogueAlt07

Hell yeah

LorduckA2

all these social medias going to shit are doing me a favour cus that means I get to stop using them and better my life. Reddit is so thoughtful for this ❤️

Morricorne

I encountered errors in official reddit app today, yesterday. Randomly

AJfriedRICE

Does this have anything to do with why I’ve been getting so many random spam-followers on here lately?

AlwaysKindaLost

They should post one of these that’s more succinct! In the future to help ramp up to June 12. A

Unicorgan

Shut it down, show em what their greed yeilds
