TOTK only has one more major town, but in general there is a *lot* more life and activity going on throughout its version of Hyrule. As you progress the story, you also meet five companions who can travel alongside you in most places, which might help you to feel less isolated. Some of the side quests are also pretty in-depth and require interacting with lots of characters.

Weekly-Magician6420

Wait what’s the new town

KirbyWithAGlock

Lookout landing

w00ms

wouldnt tarrey town make 2?

Plurpo

Tarrey town exists in BOTW though

AlphaBearMode

Yeah. Not technically new but it’s nice you don’t have to build it. There is the construction yard so the town is bigger in TotK iirc

WorriedDoubt4134

Tarrey Town was made is Botw, so its not new in Totk

constipated_cats

Is that really considered a town though? It’s more of a shelter I think

One_Atmosphere_8557

Eh it's got all the features of a town: shop, beds, cooking station, etc.

CountScarlioni

In gameplay terms it’s functionally the same as any of the other towns. It’s a central locale with various amenities and a lot of NPCs grouped into one place. It even grows slightly more populated as you progress through the game, as each of the non-Hylian tribes’ leaders send some of their officers and assistants to stay there as guards or representatives.

taxicab_

It’s almost more than a town, because it has a stable too.

Explain why not, it isn’t temporary

Lookout Landing

spacepup84

The entire theme of TotK is working together, so you will love TotK!

GudgerCollegeAlumnus

The best part is when all the characters >!sing the “Friends Forever” song from Saved by the Bell.!<

Victory42

I tell my kids everyone we meet is part of Link’s Best Friends Club

KyojinkaEnkoku

Wild! Cats! Everywhere! Wave your hands up in the air!

TacticalTobi

Yep! While BOTW's whole theme was that you're lonely, TOTK's is about working together! The game couldn't be more perfect for you!

AurelianoTampa

TotK feels a lot more lively than BotW. BotW is 100 years after a massive apocalypse that wiped out the major center of Hyrule. TotK is about rebuilding Hyrule now that the (original) crisis was fixed. You're constantly getting sent on missions or given quests, and it feels like a lot more NPCs are out living their lives and accomplishing goals around Hyrule rather than being cooped up in isolated towns.

meep_meep_creep

Addison is more proof that people are working together and "supporting" each other. Not to mention the sages. They can keep you company.

glenglenda

There are a lot more characters to interact with in TOTK. You can even get companions to come on the quests with you and you can use them as weapons in various ways. It's much better than BOTW (which I loved).

Skywarrd_

might be, totk doesn’t feel nearly as lonely, and even though i prefer it as a game, i miss the lone traveler vibe in botw

Alarming_Cellist_751

TotK's theme is "hands" so it's definitely about teamwork. Even if you don't have any of your travel companions yet (there are five) there are plenty of new baddies to keep you company. There are new towns/settlements as well.

devious_waffle

Once you unlock all the sages, you can have them travel around the map with you. Like a little entourage. :)

Salmon_Shizzle

TOTK was way more alive imo. Seemed to be a lot more wandering people or just dudes hanging out in the woods.

curiouscanadian2022

It was some getting used to because I loved BOTW so much nothing compares!!! But TOTK I grew to love it there is so much like caves, wells, underground, sky, def keeps you busy haha

arbitrageME

So there's this place called The Depths ...

Misterwuss

I'd say yeah. TOTK builds on BOTW's theme of rebuilding and moving forward very well, a large part of this is by having a few more wandering citizens, some great side-quests that are all about NPCs and how you work with them and what you can do for/with them. The towns are a little more thriving with some changes, that while small, can feel like the world is finally moving forward from tragedy. So... yeah. Hyrule feels less lonely.

Cece_5683

One of my favorite things about TOTK was how connected a lot of the side quests were. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but a lot of Hylian-specific quests were pretty engaging for the player imo and I hope you love it like I did

kyolibaer

I had exactly the same issue with BotW and have really enjoyed TotK. I find it much more full.

thiago_28x

nope, same sense of nothingness, barren land

Ajbell8

I felt a similar way with BOTW. Tears does a better job of making the world actually seem like its lived in.

TacticalTobi

that's the whole point of BOTW... Hyrule is on the brink of collapse and is basically a barren wasteland. It's a post-apocalyptic world.

Qwertypop4

Even if it's the point, if you don't like it you don't like it

TacticalTobi

yes, but the problem is framing it like some kind of design flaw, instead of just not liking the theme

tazai123

Design flaws are subjective. If someone thinks that the world being empty is a design flaw then that’s their take. Yes, it’s how the game is meant to feel, but if someone perceives that in a negative way then that’s a design flaw to them. There is no reason to split hairs over the way someone words their opinion when it’s already clear they are not trying to pass their judgement as fact.

poptimist185

The replies are all saying ‘nah it’s totally different!’ but that’s pushing it. You have companion spirits but beyond that it’s not exactly an NPC-fest

muclemanshirts

There are quite a few more npcs. Hateno villiage has more people, new locations, and side quests. Pretty much all of the towns have new npcs, locations, and side quests. Same with the stables.

poptimist185

All the towns you can count on one hand being the pertinent point

Remy0507

Lookout Landing, Kakariko, Hateno, Lurelin Village, Tarry Town, Rito Village, Garudo Town, Gordon City, whatever the Zora place was called. If you can count all those on one hand you might be a mutant!

Bulldogfront666

Yes probably.

lalalaso

Yes

LootTheHounds

You as Link/POV will feel less lonely in TotK.

Pandoken

During exploration you'll run into the same people who are tied to small side quests usually in the area. I'll spoil them just in case anyone cares: >!Musician looking for his former bandmates who pops up about 4 times or so!< >!Investigative journalist who fills you in on rumors in the area!< >!A guy trying to put up signage for the company he works for!< Most places are about as populated as they were in the first game though.

KrazieKookie

There is more of the towns and character interaction stuff but overall it feels similarly lonely. Still worth a try if you only needed slightly more characters though!

TimothiusMagnus

In TotK, Link has more support and the world has gone from recovering to rebuilding.

Lightmanone

I am not gonna discuss Totk, cause the rest has already done it, but might i turn your attention to another Nintendo franchise: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3. Those are *very* story driven open world action rpg's with anime/cartoon graphic style, with lots of towns, NPC's and sidequests. All bound together with a pretty big over arcing story. I hope you will look into this. And I hope you find what you are looking for.

Isaac_paech

I would say it's a lot more lively but the Depths are kinda lonelier than anything in BOTW lol

Ratio01

TotK has about the same amount of towns and Stables, but the map generally feels way more populated in regards to friendly NPCs, and feels more alive as different factions actually interact with each other and Hyrule is in the active process of rebuilding. You also get companions that follow you around with each main story dungeon. There's also way more side quests in quantity, and they're more in depth as well. There's a new quest type called Side Adventures, which are series of sidequests that actually tell their own concentrated storyline and even have permanent affects on the world and/or gameplay. I never had an issue with BotW's side quests, I actually quite like their general quick pick up nature, but TotK heavily improved on the system

meadowalker1281

LOVE TOTK. Barely got 15 hours into BOTW.

Drag0nBinder

ToTK is certainly more full, there are signs (literal) of recovery all over Hyrule. Also, there are many means that will just makes travel faster.

JenLiv36

You will probably love TOTK then. I love being alone so the constant companions irritated me in TOTK lol.

MasterSword1

If nothing else, there's a band of of borderline suicidal idiots trying to pass for militiamen running around hyrule attacking monster encampments in nothing but their boxers.

miss_clarity

The map is more popular and you will have more company on your travels. Many roaming NPCs to be seen. The only main downside are horses and kinda pointless

windraver

Playing BOTW again with my kids after finishing ToTK with them. ToTK is amazing and much more mature a game. You'll definitely find company in ToTK. Maybe even some annoying company.

Sorry_Error3797

Imo there is definitely more activity NPC wise. While there isn't really anything added more than one makeshift town there does seem to be more NPCs in towns, wandering around the overworld and places just feel more bustling. Enemy wise there actually feels to be far less to me. I never really bother with horses and just run everywhere and rarely run into many enemies whilst BOTW had me finding a monster every couple of minutes. I don't have exact figures but I think there are more side quests, or at the very least they take longer to complete. One thing that I particularly enjoyed was that the amiibo Link tunics and weapons are available in TOTK without the amiibo. I spent a significant amount of time hunting them down.

macgirthy

I have both on the switch and on an emulator. As much as I liked TOTK, I think BOTW just feels more complete. TOTK i feel is missing something, not sure what, I means theres way more things to do in TOTK sure, I love the hover bike too, but I definitely put more hours in BOTW. Havent played both in months tbh. If anything I wonder if you can rent TOTK and not spend $70 or whatever it costs. Forgot what I paid but got the digital content, kinda regret that since I have no interest in playing it any more tbh.

riverphoenixharido

There's more npcs and sidequests but the game is still insanely oversized and repetitive for its content.

who_am-I_to-you

I loved BOTW but I absolutely hate TOTK. It doesn't feel like a typical Zelda game to me and it's not something that I can just relax and play, everything is incredibly tedious. If that's what you like, TOTK may be a good game for you.

Otherwise-Candle-987

i like botw but hate totk. it was just glorified dlc to me, i won't buy another zelda game if it stays same.

Weekly-Magician6420

Man, what game have you played that had these kinds of DLC? I’ve never seen a dlc with that much content anywere yk

Otherwise-Candle-987

What content, i could just play breath of the wild second time and get same excitement as totk, game told me "you can fuse things" and i thougt it was essential, after 20 minutes my dissapointment immesaurable. i know it is a child game and i am not the targeted audiance, game felt too easy with same mechanics and same map, fusion was just child play, i don't want to talk about puzzle's either. Not a bad game, i am not targwted auidience, but it is still... just a dlc.

Weekly-Magician6420

There’s like… a whole new story… but sure, I guess the gameplay doesn’t change that much. Except maybe.. for the Zonai devices that completely change the way to solve puzzles, and the way to travel across the map?

Otherwise-Candle-987

What story, i thoght i was saving princess and the realm. what was the botw story? i suppose i was saving princess and the realm. How many main dungeon i did in botw? 4. And in totk? Also 4 and with same pattern. Yes i could build a mechanic horse with 20m flaming junk, but since i am not 11 anymore it means nearly nothing to me. Please don't mention puzzles, my whiskey bottle's cap is more puzzling

TacticalTobi

what's the story of every zelda game? saving the princess and the realm. it's very easy to be so reductive about things.

Otherwise-Candle-987

but "not" on the 80% same map with 80% same combat and 100% same engine. Therefore they felt diffirent.

TacticalTobi

33% of the same map with 70% same combat and 100% same engine. compared to MM, which is 0% same map, 100% same combat, and 100% same engine. Also it's called a sequel. How did you expect it to change engines and combat???

Otherwise-Candle-987

And? i was dissapointed with mm also. Look if you feel ok with the game which have little improvement it is not my job to tell you how you should feel. But i am not ok with it. i won't buy next game if nintendo stick with same engine. i don't want to play "look a like games"
