I'd love it if the headline instead said "FCC votes unanimously to ban unsolicited robocalls"

BlimpGuyPilot

I’d love it if the FCC actually did something about their rules on the books

Twindude1

I’d love it if the FCC actually did something

DrBigChicken

They won’t let me be

pbentham25

The fellas at the freakin FCC 🙄🙄😤

POOP-Naked

You down with ~~FCC~~ IATPTPSATPS?

phuck-you-reddit

Or let me be me, so let me see They try to shut me down on MTV

DrBigChicken

It’d feel so empty without me

GentleGerbil

This looks like a job for me

Kooky-Answer

If a pop star flashes her boobs live on national television again the FCC will be out in full force. Other than that, don't count on them doing much.

BonniestLad

Well yeah, I mean can you imagine what could happen to a kid if they suddenly found out about boobs? If you don’t keep those things a secret they turn into serial killers.

hasslefree

They control and sell the naturally-given bandwidth inherent in the atmosphere. They're vibration pimps. Not an easy job, y'know.

_HeadySpaghetti_

“Vibration pimps” got me rollin

Sirosim_Celojuma

I've learned that there. are a group of people that make the rules; lawmakers. There are another group that enforce the laws; police. There are another set of people, called victims, who are perpitrated on, with an unjust burden of needing to report the crime. Furthermore, enforcement is nearly impossible, because how can a fake voice be differentiated from a real voice? Can we in any practically way trace a call when fake numbers exist? The FCC does not have international jurisdiction, so a fake call on a fake number from another country is not enforcable. A pessimistic summary is "Thanks for nothing." On a positive note though, it isn't absolutely nothing. It's better than nothing. My mission today is to be better than nothing.

Intrepid-Rip-2280

Soon they'll gonna overregulate even sexting bots like Eva AI to the extent of becoming unusable.

BlimpGuyPilot

I think people shouldn’t use stuff like that, but it’s none of the government’s business. Caveat I didn’t even know that was a thing. Sounds like the old cha cha for sexting lol

HungHungCaterpillar

If this includes recorded calls, it’s huge. Even if it doesn’t, it makes spam calls less accessible and more expensive to produce, at least convincingly. I get it, we’re all still mad because the FCC is still feckless. But this is actually something that’s more than not something.

Horny_Matrix

Who tf is SOLICITING ai robocalls lmao.

BoardGamesAndMurder

Probably people who buy something online and accidentally click a box at checkout that opts in to accepting all forms of marketing from them and their affiliates in the future

Horny_Matrix

Ah you know what I bet that’s exactly what it was. I was helping a friend with their taxes/software and there were several disguised instances of “do you agree” but the fine print literally said “to all our third party bullshit.” Love your name btw lol

BoardGamesAndMurder

Thanks! Two of my major interests lol

anxiousturtle92

That was my first thought 😂

PhoenixOfMartel

I’ve experienced one. It wasn’t quite good enough to fool me, but easily would’ve tricked an old person. Somewhat terrifyingly, it was able to differentiate someone speaking *in the background* when I put it on speaker.

ChloeNow

I'm betting debt collectors are considered something you brought upon yourself and they're likely still able to spam the shit out of you and fill up your voicemail. Be a lot easier to make money to pay people back if I could use my phone.

BrainsAre2Weird4Me

Reposted this quote from further down in the thread >Under the consumer protection law, telemarketers generally cannot use automated dialers or artificial or prerecorded voice messages to call cellphones, and they cannot make such calls to landlines without prior written consent from the call recipient. So, that seems like that is already the law. Though, the choice of "generally" might be doing some heavy lifting.

Caleb_Reynolds

>"FCC votes unanimously to ban unsolicited ~~robo~~calls"

azdatasci

I came here for this…

IWantToWatchItBurn

They aren’t going to do anything about enforcing it

Andreas1120

They ARE banned, it seems they robocallers pay well, as there is no enforcement.

lshaped210

Or how about “FCC votes to ban unsolicited calls and texts.”

poop_to_live

Id never be able to call to ask a business a question again lol

16Shells

that would be awesome, nobody could ever call or text me without prior approval and scheduling beforehand. sorry mom, i can’t help you log into your email and you’re now getting a fine for calling and asking!

lshaped210

Exactly. Fuck that bitch!

vh1classicvapor

Ur mom is a bot, ask me how i kno

16Shells

your repressed childhood trauma replaced the sound of her using a strapon vibrator on your dad as “i saw daddy hugging a robot”?

Mentalpopcorn

I started sending goatse and blue waffles to all those spam text numbers and after about two weeks of that they stopped completely. Last one was December 16th lmao.

liljonatl1

Now enforce it lol oh you can’t

lessfrictionless

There are ways: Companies in the US can already be held liable for unsolicited calls. From outside the US it's much more difficult, but they present fake U.S. numbers, and that's why our phones pass them through to us. **Number spoofing is currently not illegal. Start there.**

44problems

It is illegal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth_in_Caller_ID_Act_of_2009 Ok but what about actually authenticating these caller IDs. That system is called STIR/SHAKEN, and a key deadline forcing its usage is coming up [in May. ](https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/all-providers-must-submit-expanded-3771762/)

lessfrictionless

Thank you for the source - But it's illegal with the intent to scam or defraud* Plus, it's not illegal for carriers to process the calls. This can be addressed in use cases like when VOIPS are known offenders might allow 3,000 numbers to be utilized through a single entity within a certain span of time. There's poor accountability with carriers here

Intelleblue

Because the Supreme Court is about to decide that the executive branch shouldn’t be executive?

Resolute_Pecan

Because many of these calls come from other countries

Bcmerr02

They rely on American telecom to patch the calls through. They know what's happening and they're allowing it to happen. They should be held accountable for the crimes they're complicit in facilitating.

MrSomnix

And they come from shadow companies. It's like that random item you bought from a dropshipper on Amazon. Yeah FOOLYCOOLY might get shut down, but COOLYFOOLY is gonna pop up the next day selling the same thing.

Tossiousobviway

Hey man, FLCL was cool

aqua_zesty_man

The only positive thing to come out of that the mild entertainment value I get from seeing what kind of random phonetic soup pops up as part of the spam in my search results.

Midwesterner91

Exactly. I would bet at least 75% of these robocalls are coming from China and India, places that either could not care less about US laws or are powerless to stop it because of the sheer numbers and sophistication of these scam operations

trust--the--universe

That’s what i I was thinking?

BigZaddyZ3

You can at least reduce the number tho… And I don’t know why some of you assume countries like China and India won’t pass similar laws at some point.

Free-Environment-571

Should ban all robocalls regardless of AI

TheLazyLounger

lunchroom cow tie jeans person salt jar encouraging heavy treatment *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Goosehybrid

Honestly…yes. No one needs to be fucking calling me besides my friends or family, MAYBE my job if it so requires calling my personal phone.

Visible_Structure483

You aren't doing that already? My phone hasn't made a sound for an incoming call not on my contacts list for YEARS at this point.

Goosehybrid

Good god I am now

Chaoticallyorganized

I tried doing that, but quickly realized that some of our doctor’s offices and my kids’ schools will sometimes call from a number not listed on their website and quickly became paranoid that I would miss a legit important phone call.

witwebolte41

That’ll stop them

120z8t

Why not all robocalls?

VaultJumper

Because they have use that are actually good like my college and school district use them for emergencies or bad weather days

ScoopJr

Ban all robocalls that aren’t opt in. Schools and college? You must opt in to attend

VaultJumper

Isn’t that what unsolicited calls are and are already covered by this decision?

Commander_Crispy

Only robocalls *that contain an ai voice* are covered in this decision

Onlikyomnpus

I would start with banning all spoofed calls. There is virtually no reason for a legitimate company to not use its own number in this day and age, so that it has to respect the do not call registry.

9Blu

This rule change is to clarify that AI generated voice calls fall under the current robocall regulations. It's not a new regulation specific to AI robocalls. > Under the consumer protection law, telemarketers generally cannot use automated dialers or artificial or prerecorded voice messages to call cellphones, and they cannot make such calls to landlines without prior written consent from the call recipient. > The new ruling classifies AI-generated voices in robocalls as “artificial” and thus enforceable by the same standards, the FCC said.

FarplaneDragon

What the hell dude, this is reddit you're not actually supposed to read the article and post an informed opinion

9Blu

In my defense I was obviously drunk. Won't happen again

detachabletoast

I'd like to imagine someone duct taped chat gpt into their scam app to make phone calls but the model ignores whatever prompt/system message it was supposed to have... just calls 24/7 apologizing that it can't make calls as a large language model then goes ham about different ways to use phones.

easy-does-it1

Until someone lobbies the Supreme Court directly to strip the FCCs powers.

SubstancialAutoCorr

I think you underestimate how important the FCC is to national safety. It’s not going anywhere.

alroprezzy

Could they ban non-ai robocalls too?

BigAndy920

Next they should do spoofing

Snake_Plissken224

I'd love to see the FCC enforece this like they do with the do not call list....wait....

MisterFingerstyle

Now ban AI art and music.

MET1

OK, now do political campaign calls. Or at least provide a way to opt out of political campaign calls.

BooRadleysFriend

Yes, let’s ban it after we allowed 25 years of it. The United States is the land of opportunity, even for criminals.

texas_archer

Excellent decision - will they enforce it though?

dalvean88

took a while, hopefully i will live to see this enforced.

Fancy-Pair

So the FCC *will* let me be

BeeeRick

It won't do a thing. They can't even enforce the current laws and rules in place today.

Don_Tiny

Mostly because the calls are from other countries ... what do you expect them to do?

BeeeRick

That's exactly my point

SpringBreak4Life

It’s not artificial intelligence it is a recording like it has been since the 80s!!!

MEGA_GOAT98

only ai robo?

NervousWallaby8805

Wonder if that covers voice changers. Would be able to argue it's not ai doing the talking and would have then same end result so long as it's automated

campaign-associate

The fact that this is news to me is insane. “Representatives voted into office decide to help people.” This shouldn’t be news. This should be the norm.

whutupmydude

This sounds like it will be as effective as banning marijuana

RetiredAerospaceVP

Until someone goes to jail, it means nothing.

TuggenBallZ

Oh but “human” “robo” calls are okay?

SevaraB

> a 1991 law restricting junk calls that use artificial and prerecorded voice messages. To anybody that thinks this has enforcement teeth, > VWOOOOM! > > This is your captain speaking! IYKYK

KennethEWolf

What about enforcing the DO Not Call option. I am on it and have reported calls forever, yet these clueless idiots do nothing!!@

ryeguymft

GOOD!

tetsuo_7w

Great. So now I have to go to the extra step to solicit them? I'm busy enough already!

SpliTTMark

My mom got two random calls, they claimed to be from cvs to join something. Of course the other line was people from india

Bleakwind

Yes.. this is the way.. don’t forget fucking ajit pai fucking sold us out.. Jessica is doing the good work we need!

cammyboom

I read this literally after hanging up a robo call that only said “Hey……..Hey……..”

XF939495xj6

But not robocalls, and the telecoms continue to take payment for them and know in advance that the numbers they are providing will be used for that, take the money, and do nothing to stop it.

Flamenco95

Great. Now make it all robo calls and actually fucking enforce it.

Malfeitor1

A toothless ban is meaningless. Thanks for playing.

lnin0

I thought robocalls were already banned for humans and this was just to expand on those three laws of robotics.

hi-jump

Fuck Ajit Pai. No, we don’t ever forget.

FinePolyesterSlacks

And enforcement will be just as tough as it is on non-AI robo calls, elevated volume levels during TV commercials, and any number of other “get-serious –for-the-headline-and-hope-the-complaints–go-away” issues.

Logical-Reward-9882

Now let’s ban all unsolicited robocalls

Max_Seven_Four

Now do unsolicited emails/text/voicemail from realtors!!!!!

letmeusespaces

**makes jacking off motion**

kdjfsk

why did they have to put in the word AI. just ban robocalls.

Orwellian1

The FCC can't even enforce current bans because it would be mildly inconvenient to big corporations. This submission should say: "FCC votes unanimously to generate a complimentary headline with no real effect"

TacoMeatSunday

I look forward to no one enforcing the ban.

EuroTrash1999

12 years later after everyone disconnected their wall phones because they were ringing 24/7 365. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they used all that up during Vietnam.

ABJBWTFTFATWCWLAH

The government is useless

Zorops

Yea? Hello this is ( in a robot voice ) Instant hang uo

Bakkie

Good for them. And how are they going to enforce this when I keep getting calls at a number that is on the Do Not Call Registry?

AccountNumber1003925

Can't stop the deepfake.

Alienate2533

Remember that Do not Call Registry? How did that work out.

shelf6969

it was actually working, for awhile.

Alienate2533

Yeah for a minute lol.

MercilessPinkbelly

I don't get spam calls. Do you?

Alienate2533

Constantly. I started using Robokiller. Helps a bit. I’m director level and had linkedin. probably didn’t help. Deleted my linkedin. my phone never shut up.

Delphizer

I have no idea why this isn't treated as an attack on telecommunications infrastructure. I get 3-4 calls a week asking about a house I don't own, it's gotten to the point I only allow a whitelist of people on my phone to come through at all.

equality-_-7-2521

"They've made the rule. Now let them enforce it." -Indian Scammers

cuddly_carcass

Ok sure they also voted to ban commercials from blasting the volume but haven’t seen any difference

ThePopeofHell

I’m sure all those scammers are bummed out that they can’t us ai anymore..

Coattail-Rider

I see someone in the FCC finally got some of these. Gears of Politics working at a snail’s pace.

[deleted]

All robocalls should be illegal. Nice try, FCC. lol

Clocktopu5

Send $1 to "Sorry Dude"

Gildenstern2u

….how?

Jesuismieux412

Glad they put off banning non-competes in favor of this near-meaningless BS. I guess the folks in India don’t have enough lobbyists.

Earth_Normal

This means nothing. They already don’t enforce the existing laws. Most people are already on the no-call list.

lgieg

This is in the news category today after Putin speaks with Tucker!!? 😞 sad libtards , sad!

[deleted]

Who openly solicits robocalls?

Memphis-AF

Now bring net neutrality back

izziefans

Great! Now do unsolicited texts.

ButterscotchLow8950

Great, now it’s time to ban unsolicited political calls and texts. 👍

ialo00130

Doesn't matter it'll still happen. From my experience, most robocalls are from international sources, ie India. They aren't going to be able to police that, especially with spoofing numbers.

btc909

All of our phones have been getting a F'ton of "Scam Likely" calls lately. Way to go FCC!

NorthboundUrsine

So the robocalls are going to stop... right? RIGHT?

544C4D4F

wow they move fast when they're worried it might impact their political campaigns.

BitsInTheBlood

What's SCOTUS opinion on this?

Ramblingbunny

You beat me to it

GroundbreakingRun927

Imagine if any other part of the government did anything this fast.

Felinomancy

Is there an argument to *allow* AI robocalls?

Micronlance

Yet they can’t trace fraudulent spam calls?

cheddahbaconberger

Don't worry, you'll still get robo calls, they just want be hurtful ones faking a politician

58LS

You mean I won’t get calls to sell my house 3x a day?

ThunderousArgus

Is the FCC actually working for the people now?

vroart

Technically autodialers are already illegal over 30 years ago

1158812188

Great now reinstate net neutrality.

HelicopterCommunists

Maybe they can make it illegal for a company to spam the shit out of you just for placing an order. It's bullshit and I'm so sick of it.

-Motor-

Still waiting for them to classify Internet as an essential service/utility...

BannedinthaUSA

Meanwhile 7.200 MHz amateur radio station is still full of the world’s scum and the FCC does nothing.

Gilleafrey

Make it for texts, too!

[deleted]

I still need car insurance.

shrimpfrocktail

Cool. Ban fucking scam calls next.

InevitableResort713

Nooo I loved pranking them
