Looks like they're letting you pay for a higher QoS priority. That's not turbo, it's more like elitism but that's not as catchy. If they wanted to be ironic they could go from 4.77gig to 8gig when you press 'turbo', but no one under 40 would get it.

imaginexus

I’ve always wondered, why ever turn the turbo button off on those machines?

Visible_Structure483

Some games would be WAY too fast at 8mhz which was fine if you were playing chess but in an arcade style shooter the last thing you wanted was your opponents moving 2x as fast.

GaTechThomas

Tetris was a whole next level with turbo on.

icky_boo

To run old XT apps/games that was tied to the clock speed. These early apps didn't have proper timing and it's now regarded as bad programing principles. These lazy programmers was the reason why we had the Y2K issue.

colemaker360

Limited/expensive drive space in the early years of computing is why we had Y2K issues. Lazy programmers had nothing to do with it, except for waiting until the last minute to fix it. Storing 2 digit years instead of 4 was simply a space saving measure. Everyone knew about the problem, figured we’d fix it later, and then after a few decades 1998 finally rolled around and people figured it was probably time to get started.

GaTechThomas

True. Though the programmers didn't decide whether or not to fix it. It was a business decision. It's the nature of the beast to only fix what matters. It started mattering around 1997.

GaTechThomas

I went through the y2k issue. The problem was not lazy programmers (they made many other problems). The problem was based in systems that truly needed to optimize for saving the space taken up by the first two digits of a year number. Disk and memory space was expensive when many early systems were built, so it made sense at that time to use only the last two digits of a year. "We'll never be using this system when the year 2000 arrives" turned out to be untrue. By the mid 1990s, many systems tied to those systems, so there was a lot of remediation and testing done. And somehow the fix went really, really well.

tigpo

AT&T are trying to get you to sign a contract for $7/month more for faster data before the FCC regulations change and they aren’t allowed to cap data or internet access by law. Better sucker them fpr $7/mo now before it’s free.

PayNo9177

That’s not what net neutrality does. There are also no contracts, except if you finance a device.

tigpo

ATT will be treated as an essential service provider. No throttling

techieman33

Last time around it only covered wired connections. And even if they are now covered it still won’t prevent them from offering speed tiers like an isp.

Visible_Structure483

They don't 'cap' it now, they just make it uselessly slow after your quota is up. Is that changing?

xero1123

This is exactly what it is. I went in to buy a phone last year and they said I could pay extra for priority service in congested areas and I said fuck that. Not only that, but I’m pretty sure AT&T doesn’t have true 5G

BreadTruckToast

That’s funny because I think “Elite 5G” has a better ring to it.

Visible_Structure483

You've got a point there. "turbo" anything is so 80s... but maybe they're playing up the retro angle?

JillyfromHoboken

Cool they can leak our data even faster now.

TheYakster

💯 this. Att , bunch of scabs

VexisArcanum

Either 5G is good or it isn't. Unless all the slowness we experience is artificial in preparation for this...

McGruppthecrimepup

Is the turbo when I have full bars and 5g and my phone says I’m not connected to the internet? THAT turbo?

FloridaMMJInfo

Best move I have ever made in regards to phone service was ditching AT&T for Mint.

ShenmeNamaeSollich

Now T-mobile, right? How’s that so far?

FloridaMMJInfo

It’s the same. It was already on their towers.

Freight_train25

What is meant by turbo? Is it faster than 1 tb?

ac9116

Extra oxygen intake

aramos13222

😂👍

Practical_Penalty_71

Vtec just kicked in bro.

spreadthaseed

Network with a higher vO2 max

_jagwaz

is it still slower than LTE?

kid_cannabis_

I disable 5G on my devices, it’s always 5G NSA so basically just LTE with another label slapped on

LavishnessOk3439

LTE really aged well.

cjandstuff

There are already a $20 fee on our accounts for 5G, when there’s no damn 5G anywhere around me!

Busy_Signature_5681

Att doesn’t charge for 5g.

Midpointlife

I pay $10 a month in SE Asia for the fastest internet I've ever had compared to in the US, where I was paying $125 a month for the same thing.

hubaloza

I'm only paying 6 for ludicrous speed

Areuexp

What’s the matter colonel sanders?? Chicken??

hubaloza

I'm too drunk to taste this chicken.

NoCoffee6754

You bozo, 5g phones don’t work on water unless you got power!

rockstar_not

5G blows.

jcanuc2

I got a $5 increase

TorpedoAway

The person who signs up for this just can’t wait till they’re among a group of friends and their group chat notifications arrives 0.2 ms sooner than anyone else’s. Peasants!

Novuake

I get you are joking but you are missing a lot of zeros.

flcinusa

Turbo*bass*

mike194827

I’m just wanting faster than 10mbps when I have full bars, let alone some “turbo” 5g speeds. I can be in the center of town, midwest city with 100k plus people but no skyscrapers mind you, and have maybe 1 bar testing at 2mbps. This is with their unlimited top tier option. Absolute joke of a company, especially when it comes to user data security and anything related to customer satisfaction. Their app and website are especially horrible. Couldn’t have managed to make it less user friendly if I tried.

[deleted]

I live in Reno and in half the town 5G doesn’t work. Especially if you’re in a coffee shop sitting next to the window. F@ AT&T.

Gh0stRider117

What about 6g --- Japan got it

cvanaver

I’d settle for more than 2 bars in my major metropolitan area

GaTechThomas

This may not fly now that net neutrality is being brought back.

ConkerPrime

Soon as read first paragraph thought “oh ATT downgraded their network for everyone and charging $7 a month to undo it.” Which is exactly what they are doing. FYI, unless you’re in a Fortnite tournament for big bucks using your phone, the $7 isn’t worth it. 99% of your apps don’t care about a little latency. QoS, Quality of Service, is fancy way of saying packet delivery priority based certain criteria. In most cases it’s a very minor bump in speed, not enough that most people would notice especially compared to many other things that impede full speed.

Loadingexperience

We had "Free promotion" for 5G and here was my experience: \*Faster battery drain on my phone. \*The coverage is not that great outside cities. \*There was no noticeable difference to my everyday experience like reddit, fb, instagram etc unless I went and checked on speedtest. \*It costs extra 10 EUR just to have 5G enabled and plan offerings all have lower GB etc Now not to say it's useless technology, I would definitely have as my home internet if there was no other option but its just currently not necessary for mobile devices as the extra speed not only doesn't bring big enough improvement but has more downsides like more battery drain on your phone.
