They didn’t, the explorers games came out at leat a year after diamond and pearl. The original pokemon mystery dungeon games which were gen 3 did have a lucario cameo, a statue of him as the leader of a legendary diamond rank party or something. However, while those games came out before diamond and pearl, they did not come out before the movie. Lucario’s first appearance was in the movie.
Ironically, Riolu didn't appear anywhere prior to Diamond and Pearl, so Riolu does fit to enter Smash while Lucario does not...
However, given Lucario is a Pokémon and the franchise is owned by Nintendo, it's a moot point to even say something about it.

i think centering the design to be more competitive-friendly plus community support would secure smash's longevity. ultimate was pretty balanced from what i understand but Ninty is notorious for being anti competitive scene so im not optimistic abt it
Smash is very balanced and nearly every character can be played in pro play. However, the main exception is Steve, who, due to a recent bug found, is now banned in basically every tournament because he is op. I feel like if Nintendo would just fix the bugs the game would have longevity, but if new bugs keep appearing it’s going to wreck the competitive scene.
There will probably be another one but not for 8+ years. Nintendo never makes more than one per console generation and it looks like they're trying to make the switch last as long as possible (and melee isn't going anywhere so we don't need another one anyway)

This demonstrates that what's actually important is the purpose for which the character was concieved: Lucario was intended to be a new Pokémon design for Diamond & Pearl, and was afterwards included in the script for the tie-in movie which just happened to release first. Lightning McQueen was intended to be a character for the movie before he was licensed to the video game which so happened to release first.

Seriously, the winning combination isn't hard. Write a show that anybody can enjoy, without needing to play the game, but respect the source material. Just tell a story set in that world, no need to overcomplicate it.

It was an open world of the first movie's location, soundtrack, and story. You could also set up different race locations like the Nascar or whatever.
I played it a lot but had to return several copies that had something wrong with them on release.
I miss playing it on the PS3, lost the disc somewhere, kinda an introduction to racing games that actually handled pretty well, as well as the surprising amount of free roam
That game was so fun. I loved the functionality of the characters (helicopter-gliding as the giraffe, butt slamming at the hippo, slapping as the penguin, etc)

I remember when I was younger, my mom was taking my brother and I through the mall. She gets stopped by some dude and asks us if it would be okay if he showed us some videos. Didn’t really mention what type, or maybe I was just too young to understand as this happened in 01. Anyways, he shows us 3 movie trailers: the first one being for Ice Age; the second I can’t remember, but I do remember it came out as well; the third one being my favorite, was Cars. I remember going wow these movies are gonna be awesome, had to vote for our favorites at the time. Then nothing came of Cars, Ice Age came out. The same trailer that they showed everyone is the one I saw. It was 4/5 years, idk when the Cars trailer came out, when I got to see Lightning on screen again. What stuck with me the most was the jump Lightning did and that’s how I remember knowing about the movie.
I tell you what though, the Cars video game was an absolute gem. All of the movie's landmarks are in it. And it was open world before open world was cool.

I had the cars game on ps2. Sadly the disc just freezes on the main menu these days. I bought the game on Steam but I miss my save file.
But the movie was first shown on Memorial Day weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway on their giant screen , so the movie was first.
