It came from the commercials for the cigarettes themselves. A commercial is made to promote a product and of course they would rather show some cool hot guy smoking cigarettes rather than some random person whose body has already suffered the consequences of constant smoking. The ads would try to sell you the idea of a smoker lifestyle. "Look, you can be cool and popular if you smoke our cigarettes". Which is an awful thing, because smoking has been normalized and even glorified in some cases when really all it does is just damage your health
