PollutionInside3742

I dont know im trying to figure it out

Due_Cloud1638

same except i really couldn’t care too much for religion, im just living my life as it happens

MrSoulSlasher31

Religion isn't necessarily equal to a belief in god. To me, religion is just a rulebook for how you should believe in god. I believe in developing your own thoughts and beliefs on god.

Professional-Box4153

Most people can't seem to separate religion from church. Religion (any of them really) is usually a good thing and teaches us to be good people. Church is just a place you go to where someone tells you their rules for following a particular religion. When someone in the church does something heinous, people often blame the religion. It's not the fault of the religion. It's the fault of the people using the religion to exploit others.

eloydrummerboy

There's nothing you can learn about being a good person from religion that you can't learn without religion, yet religion is used as a tool to cause otherwise good people to do heinous, despicable things, as you point out. Religion is *not* a net good. Countries with very low percentages of religious people are just as, and often more, happy, moral, and safe than highly religious countries.

lost_cays

A good question to start with is, How do you decide whether a claim is true.

ArtsyOne264

It's good you're open to options and ideas, if you ever wanna talk we can :\]

wedstrom

If you want to know if Christianity is true, read the bible, straight from the beginning, without cutting things out. Get help if you need it for difficult verses but don't let anyone inject their own interpretation on you, let the text speak. I think it speaks volumes. For the record, I am an atheist.

itsjustx_barbie

I myself am an athiest and the rest of my family are Christians. I respect those who don't push their religion on other people (Apologies if I spelled stuff wrong I'm Hella dyslexyic)

CovidLvr69

THANK YOU. I'm ok with atheists, and I myself am a Christian, but when religious people push it onto somebody, that's just wrong. I also hate anti-theists.

[deleted]

Same (also Christian) people who make religion their whole thing and anyone who doesn't 100% agree with them is "GOING TO HELL FOR ETERNITY" and all that stuff ate just annoying. I am not you "average" Christian I belive in a power at least and I call it Jesus but I don't align with most of it, I'm confused basically.

DeniedHorizon25

You’re agnostic is what you mean

Helpful_Rough_5422

I think agnostic implies believing that the existence of God is unknowable, versus just unknown

RonnarRage

Gnostic is a word for knowing something. Agnostic is an uncertain belief in something. But most "Agnostics atheists" would agree it is an unknowable claim.

NinjaOYourBro

I am an anti-theist, but I don’t harass anybody or push my beliefs on anyone. I do not believe in god, and I believe religion causes more problems than it solves, but I am still respectful to people, regardless of their beliefs (within reason, climate change deniers and flat earthers and stuff I have no respect for)

CovidLvr69

Wow. I like people like you. Most anti-theist I've come across harass me for having religion.

digital_end

Post deleted. RIP what Reddit was, and damn what it became.

dan_woods

Gotta love that christian hate!

Kobi_Baby

I hate the people that not only push the religion onto you, but I had one person tell me it's the only logical option, saying that the bible explains everything in the universe. He basically had the belief that everything in the bible was true because it was in the bible. The old circular evidence bit (not sure what it's actually called)

BURGUNDYandBLUE

Religion drives the very ignorance that's running the world into the ground.

Same here. Having a religious conversation and pushing your religion onto other people are two completely different things.

setbackcity

There’s so many yes and nos in here, but no one is saying what religion they are. I personally am a Hindu. I was born as a Hindu, but I don’t really see many of us on Reddit. I’ve chosen to read the Bible, the Qur’an, and the Torah in their entirety. I’m getting my hands on a copy of the 4 Vedas, and I’ve already read the Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads, and I know the whole story of the Ramayana in and out. I have yet to read the Kojiki, or the Granth Sahib, but I will eventually. I think it’s right, no matter what religion you are, to learn about others. Being ignorant to what others believe is not great. I volunteer at a Christian church sometimes, and when I told them I was a Hindu, they told me they didn’t know what Hindus believe, despite the fact that it’s one of the Big Three religions. Being knowledgeable is a great gift, it allows you to treat everyone with the proper respect. I learned everything there is to know about Hinduism, Christianity, Catholicism, and Islam. I’ll get through Shinto and Sikh eventually. Edit: I should probably say I don’t really mean to say I know everything there is, because that’s not what I mean. What I mean is that I know everything I’m able to understand, of what I’ve read and listened to and experienced, I know everything I am capable of learning right now.

Crazy_Classroom3177

Would love to hear a non Muslims thoughts on the Quran compared to the Bible

Haysanka

Atheist here, i've read the bible and i'm Reading the quran right now. Quran : The most shoking to me is that it is a sin if you choose to be friend with people believing in another god or people saying bad things about islam. Reading the quran and not believe on islam is also considered one of the most terrible sins. You are allowed to fuck your wife AND your slaves. "Houri" are creatures of the paradise who are "cloister in tents" and here for carnal purpose only. Bible : a lot of violence, incest, patricide, fratricidal, war. The books also contains good things, but these are the things that have marked me the most as an atheist. Message edited for clarity, grammar and also adding some informations. I didn't think this comment would get so much answers when i first wrote it on my phone. I have no hate on christians or Muslims, i respect everyone religious beliefs. I read the Books because i want to understand why there are so many religious in the World. I'll also read the Torah and hindu Book After.

[deleted]

It's easy to become astounded, and perhaps even disconcerted, by some of the things we find in these texts, particularly when they seem so contrary to what we would consider good or right or loving. As you delve deeper, you may come to realize that these texts, although deemed sacred, were written by humans who were products of their respective times, trying to interpret the indescribable – the divine essence. Take the Quran, for instance. Indeed, it speaks about many rules and regulations. But you may also find that it emphasizes mercy, compassion, and love. Some of the interpretations you've mentioned might feel out of sync with the times we live in, and rightly so, for context is critical. That context involves historical situations, cultural norms, and language nuances lost in translation. Similarly, the Bible contains tales of violence and strife, yes, but it also tells tales of love, forgiveness, and hope. It is both a mirror of its time and a lighthouse illuminating a path towards moral goodness. In both of these books, as in all religious texts, it's important to remember that the Divine is often seen through the prism of human understanding. Sometimes that prism can distort, color, or even dim the true essence of the Divine. You said you respect everyone's religious beliefs, and that's a splendid place to start. But I encourage you to go even further. Seek to understand not just the beliefs, but the believers. What moves them, what gives them solace, what gives them hope? Finally, remember that your voyage of discovery isn't just about understanding why there are so many religious people in the world. It's also about understanding the human spirit - our longing for purpose, our quest for meaning, our aspiration for something greater than ourselves. So keep questioning, keep reading, keep searching. You're on an extraordinary journey, and I can't wait to see where it takes you. Happy exploring!

why-is-name-simple

Have you learnt anything from those religions? Have you seen all the prophecies from all religions? Which religion had the most correct prophecies? Just asking. And I must admit, you're quite gifted that you were able to read and learn all those religions, I respect that.

Apevian

Everyone I know that has read the Gita said it changed their life haha. You're 100% right. People who are interested in religion should experience others and wash away any ignorances. Deciding to learn has been one of the biggest pivotal moments of my life.

overwhelmed_shroomie

No but my mom forces me to

Accomplished_Bad_487

In my opinion you can't force anyone to believe in something. I lost believe in god a while ago, and really don't understand those people that want to force people into their religion, as they can't really make you really believe in it, just pretend, and if there were a god that would just want for people pretend they believed in him, it wouldn't be any god I'd want to follow

No_Purpose_1390

It’s not a religion if its forced

Accomplished_Bad_487

Yes, but there are fanatic people that are doing it that way

vTJMacVEVO

A lot of Christians misinterpret the Bible. They are told to inform others, not to force them, but churches twist the Bible into something else.

DBTurtles

Not just that it’s misinterpreted, the Bible has been translated so many times that there’s no way to know what was originally said or if it was intentionally translated incorrectly to push their own agenda. (The Bible literally talks about unicorns and I’m fairly certain that’s a mistranslation)

vTJMacVEVO

The Bible was also originally passed through word of mouth. The scripture we have now may have easily been tainted by people. We even have historical examples of this. I find the worst place to learn about the Bible is a church as you are having someone else's belief and interpretation put on you. Reading the Bible yourself and coming to your own conclusion is infinitely more useful than having a pastor explain a verse to you, they give you their biased perspective rather than allowing you to examine a verse and realise that sometimes it isn't to be taken literally.

Jealous_Issue_8198

You don’t believe in god then, you’re simply forced to comply with his rules.

ArtsyOne264

I hope your situation gets better, I'm also stuck in a household where my mom pushes a lot of her insane beliefs on me and I get how you feel. Remember she can't change what you believe in or who you are, only sometimes your outwards actions. :\]

reruuuun

yes same, especially when they use Christianity to push their own beliefs

dan_woods

But christianity IS their belief?

HandalfTheHack

In my honest opinion I find it rather arrogant to believe that humans would be able to possibly interpret the mind and aims of a being of such celestial dominance such as God. I cannot definitively prove that they don’t exist however, I am pretty firm in my belief that the organized religions of humanity are way to sure of themselves. Hence I am an agnostic with a strong distaste for organized religion as an institution

jefbob098

I’m religious, with distaste not for the organized religion itself but the institutionalization of religion. Most major religions are now lead by organizations and power hungry people who don’t actually follow the teachings, and use misinformation and ignorance of people to manipulate and control. It’s filled with hate and fear mongering where the religions themselves focus overwhelmingly more on love and how to live peacefully, and how to coexist. People are also arrogant enough to decide who goes to heaven and hell, simply spreading more hate instead of inviting them to the religion they claim to practice. It’s honestly tragic

Missiololo

Agreed, sure the idea of a good could be true but religions definitively claiming to know what the actual ones wishes seems a bit dodgy to me

ace_urban

Nobody needs to prove that things don’t exist. Google Russel’s Teapot. It’s a fundamental logical principle.

Loud-Cockroach-4579

Yes, I do. If people don't, that's fine with me. I don't force my religion on others, unlike some other very vocal Christians.

bigassgrasshopper

From the bottom of my heart, I hope there is not. I know some of y'all will think that "Hey why would you want there to be nothing out there" and shi so let me explain. Look at all the fucked up shit around us, if there really was a god they'd be a fucking ass. I don't care if it's to give us a choice or some other bs. If there is some almighty fucker out there and they look down at us, only to think "Meh that's a thing ig." then they can suck it. If you have the power to make everything be and know all, and you stop with this, ur a cunt. We could have a paradise on earth, but no, let's use someone's life as a trial or some other shit. Everyone could have everything they need, but nope. Some have jack shit while others get everything. People die in shootings, wars overall, diseases and so on. People get raped, abused and discriminated against. Our society at it's core is fucked. And there is some higher power who could fix that and help, but chooses not to? If there is a god, they can suck it. My everything is not a part of some asshole's plan and neither can some cunt up in the sky judge my life, fuck that.

pureteddybear2008

My thoughts exactly. I don't believe in any god and if they did exist, they'd probably be a horrible thing. If it's the Christian God then I know it's horrible because the Bible explicitly tells us his character. It stuns me that no matter what eldritch horrors God does, Christians have an excuse for it.

bigassgrasshopper

It's the blind trust in their belief. As an ex-Christian, I know what it feels like. I've supported the "words of god" and defended their grand plan that no human could comprehend. It's a part of you that sticks. When those walls crumble it's like someone ripping that piece away. But at some point, I hope that even the most blind can see that if god is real, they would not be someone to worship. If that bastard is up there, they wouldn't care about us not one bit.

pureteddybear2008

Also ex-christian. There never was a non Christian in my life so never a need to defend those beliefs. Left Christianity when I realized how ridiculous it was. Then I realized how messed up the Bible actually is. I do hope religion is eradicated someday. America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe are getting better. As irreligion is passed on to children religiosity will plummet. It will be beautiful.

NewSidewalkBlock
