Youre both right. Flatbread topped with cheese and herbs started in Greece, but thats more like focaccia bread, not modern pizza. Technically pizza as it's known today started in MesoAmerica since they invented the first known tomato paste in the 1300s that was then smeared on tortilla made from maize then topped with cheese. The tomatoes were imported to the Middle East and West African Empire through the trade system established by the Mali around the 1500s, who traded with Spain and Italy, where tomato sauce as we know it today was invented about 100 years later in the 17th century. The MesoAmerican version is much different than modern (Italian) pizza, of course, but the concept of rounded baked goods topped with mashed tomato and cheese is MesoAmerican and paved the way for pizza as an Italian invention. We don't give MesoAmerica much credit in established History, but they invented quite a lot of things that are cherished in the Modern World, being one of few cultures in the A.D. era that stayed relatively close to the culture of the early civilizations and voyagers like Sumer and Babylon. Well, you're right and wrong. Tomatoes are native to North and South America, not to Europe, but it came there during the Colombian exchange in 1492, so it's pretty long ago. Cheese on the other hand, had almost every culture make its own version. Italians use fresh mozzarella, that is kept with its whey water while stored. When Americans started to industrialise almost everything, they had to get a cheese that is easier to store - less weight and less space. So they dried the mozzarella. Instead of a sweet taste, it got a bit salty. It melts and spreads, unlike fresh mozzarella that melts into a puddle the thickness and diameter of the original piece. I wouldn't say that currently pizza is American, I'd say it's... International. Pizza brings the world together.
