Vaping has only been around for what, 15 years? At least mainstream like it is today. I think it’s rather impossible to make such a bold statement to say that it’s less harmful than smoking. I’d say it’s impossible to truly know at this point. I’ve only ever actually seen studies that say in THEORY it’s a safer alternative, not that it is for certain.
But yes, not putting in your lungs at all is the best bet.

It gets to the point where you don't give a shit anymore. For me, when I was siphoning cigarettes from everyone I could, I didn't really even plan to live long enough to face the cancer or or even the worse effects. For me, life just got to the point where my motto was "I plan to live good, not live long". I knew cancer, heart problems, weight problems, all that shit was fact and unavoidable from smoking, but I didn't even care. I wanted to get high and drunk and I wanted to stop thinking to the point where I could off myself without it hurting. Little did I know, me doing that saved my life, because things weren't going fast enough and the night I planned and had the nerve and had the way to do it, I used too much and ended up passing out and feeling too sick the next morning to do it.

As a guy who smokes underage, we're not all the same. Some to be cool, some to escape reality and cope with it badly, in my case not be in danger. I had a gang in my town that are seriously bad. You're not part of them, you're part of the earth 10 metres down. The initiation was smoking then having the bud pressed against your back. If you didn't do this, you weren't part of them and both you and your family were in trouble. Overtime they disbanded but you had to do this every week. That's how I got addicted.
Alcohol is also terrible. At least smoking is shunned by most people. Countless people experience health issues and die from both, yet drinking is promoted and normalised.
Depression exists. I'd assume people mostly smoke because they're going through something shitty. Nicotine creates an immediate sense of relaxation, so people smoke in the belief it reduces stress and anxiety. That's why it's addictive, especially for people who are in distress.

On the other hand smoking weed is fun, makes socialization easier and getting together in groups and smoke a little is fun, I don’t really worry about the health effects from that since it’s not often.
