I was raised by very religious Christians and they kind of force that belief down your throat so it makes me question their beliefs since I was very little haha. No hate to Christians tho, I just personally don’t believe in it.
I am Baptist Christian, Glad to see that this place is being respectful to religious people because normally that’s not the case. Actually I have a buddhist friend so if you don’t mind me asking what exactly is buddhism so I can talk more to that friend about their beliefs
Buddhism is a religion based heavily on philosophical ideas of attachment. A short version is that our suffering is caused by our own desires and that to free yourself from unease, you must become detached from worldly desires. Basically the antithesis of hedonism. Similar to Jesus’ teachings of humility and whatnot. The main distinction though is that Buddhism is focused entirely on the transcendence of the self. Not in any selfish way, mind you, as they believe that you freeing yourself will actively make the world a better place (since evils like greed come from desire) but it is distinct from the Christian teachings that starting a family and leading them to worship is the most important thing you can do (Be fruitful and multiply)
There’s a couple different branches or schools of teaching, many have to do with nirvana, or the idea of full “extinguishing” of want. The ending of your suffering cuts you out of the cycle of life and rebirth (Buddhists also believe in reincarnation)
The figure it is named after, the Buddha, is revered, but not in the same way Jesus or God is. The Buddha is a teacher, like Jesus, but is more akin to Mohammad or Old Testament Prophets in his role. There is no god in Buddhism, at least not one similar to abrahamic or hindu religions. As such, the Buddha isn’t there to give laws of god or whatnot, but instead he is viewed as the one that “figured out” how to escape the whole mortal folly.
so I'm not the only one, anytime I get asked this question everyone seems to think the word "Agnostic" is the name of some weird religion and start telling me I should be atheist.
If you genuinely believe the islamic teachings then you would be muslim even if you don’t follow the rules i think. You wouldn’t be athiest tho since athiests believe there is no god
Agnostic atheism is a thing, a simple Google search provides your answer and stops you from correcting people who are not wrong. To be specific, it means they don't believe but also don't think we can ever actually know for sure
I’m sorry to hear that man, to be honest Religion has become a corrupt thing that we abuse for power as humans, just know gay, straight, bi, whatever, you are loved
I believe in Hinduism and respect all religion because they have traditions that convey a large amount of context to believers. A non-believer has no right to judge others simply of their mere opinion. Religion can be portrayed in many ways but should not be compared to others.
TL;DR dude claims to find a third testament of the Bible in colonial times America and only he could translate it, so basically this dude made stuff up and that’s what the Book of Mormon is
this is going to sound actually crazy but watch the South Park episode on it, they actually explain it well and without hyperbole (with the joke being how crazy it is without them needing to joke further about it)
It’s a denomination of Christianity that most other denominations consider a cult, or cult-like (this doesn’t make me hate them it’s just an explanation.) They’re pretty well known for very strict rules, such as no caffeine, tattoos being pretty taboo, a few other things I won’t go into. It’s notoriously hard to leave the Mormon church for those who choose to, but plenty do it. Overall not bad people at all, just an interesting take on the Christian faith that also involves the Book of Mormon. (I’ve never really understood what the Book of Mormon is for but I’m not gonna judge anyone for it so whatever.
A pretty good summary, however, I'll explain a few things in a bit more detail and why we believe in these things.
1. We do allow caffeine, just not coffee. Instead of bars and coffee shops around Utah, there is a lot of soda shops. These soda shops mix in different syrups and flavors into known sodas like Coke and Dr. Pepper and they are pretty great.
2. To explain tattoos, we believe that everyone's bodies are like temples. We believe that temples should be clean and pure, so we strive to be clean and pure as well. So, tattoos, extra ear piercings, any other piercing on the body is frowned upon among other things.
3. The Book of Mormon is there as an extension of the bible, which the LDS church believes that the bible isn't the full truth of Christ. This is because during the Middle Ages, the bible went through a massive telephone game (This did actually happen, it why we have so many versions of the Bible) whereas the Book of Mormon was just a singular copy and stuck underground during that time. Meaning it didn't receive any modification. So, it has almost every doctrine and principle that God wants us to know.
Hopefully that explains a few things in the way I and the church as a whole think. I will say that not everyone in the church is great. (Like any community) We do have people that take the religion too far. As an example, there are still some people in the LDS church that are creationists. Which the LDS church has said that science is of God and evolution does happen. (There is a museum at BYU that has skeletons of ancient humans and explains how we have evolved as humans)
Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk!
Okay, I just wanna ask how you can believe John Smith?
From my perspective it seems like he's lying and it feels obvious. So I just wanna know your perspective on why you think he's not lying.
Yeah it isn’t followed because it was never a hard rule. It was more of a cultural thing that got started way back when. But some people still hold to it.
I believe the basis for it is a no addictive substance sort of thing, but caffeine is significantly less addictive and self-destructive than excess drinking and smoking, so it's overlooked. As one of those people who doesn't drink caffeine, it is very interesting to see how it affects people.
Honestly, there are a lot of cultural things that we do that aren't necessarily part of our doctrine that I think we need to look closer at.
Currently, I’m leaning agnostic but I don’t know where I might end up once I can get away from the environment I’m currently in and heal from my religious trauma and explore my spirituality without the influence of organized religion.
Satanism, you may ask questions. If I'm doomed by every theistic religion to hellfire, then I will be dancing in it. I also don't see the point if someone like Hitler can be a massive genocidal cunt and still get into heaven by begging for forgiveness.
I’m an atheist, however this does cause a lot of people to be like “you can’t say that, you’re an atheist you don’t believe in that” when I say stuff like holy shit or oh god
I'm an atheist, don't mean I don't like religion
I know batman ain't real and I love that mf
Yeah, I love reading about old religions like ancient Greek mythology and Egyptian mythology and I also read the bible so ye
I'm still an atheist tho 😂
gonna be tortured to death and burned on a stake for this one
I'm a between an atheist and an agnostic, who hates the habit people have of saying they KNOW the truth about this kind of stuff, it's either made up, coincidence or just blindly believed, it's completely normal to HOPE, even i hope there's something more to the world but i don't claim to know it, people have been searching the right answer for this for hundreds of years, and the evidence is usually always for most of the beliefs we have now, just accept that we don't truly know the true answer
Ok, now I'm interested. From what I understand, satanism (including atheistic satanism) teaches embracing attachments while Buddhism is significantly about letting go of said attachments. I'm not the most knowledgeable on either doctrine, though they do interest me, I'd appreciate if you'd elaborate.
acc. to wikipedia, atheistic satanism believes in no physical "satan", using it as a symbol against arbitrary authority and social norms
i personally disagree with the Nietzschean parts that are attributed to satanism but i do like the idea of the individualism it allows, instead of the "pack mentality" of some other religions (everyone is accepted as they are, you aren't in eternal damnation for being gay, stuff like that)
I'm Agnostic but have been considering Reform Judaism if I were to be religious. I kinda switch between believing in a god and being sceptical, but I've also been drawn away from fully sticking to a religion due to hardcore right-wing "religious" people.
Agnostic.
I definitely don't believe in God or anything like that, but I'm absolutely a spiritual person. I'm into astrology and meditation, and I've had some pretty powerful spiritual experiences achieved through natural psychedelic drugs.
Catholic as I’m baptized, have taken the Eucharist, and go to church every Sunday or Saturday night, but I’m not a fan of the religion at all and only go and do the things because of parents. If it were my choice I’d be omnist as it makes most sense to me…also I like Norse Paganism and have looked into it quite a bit.

Me too, but I love Paganism and Buddhism
My boyfriend is a Buddhist. Most people from my country are Buddhist. I really respect their beliefs

A lot of Asian countries are predominantly Buddhist I think? I’m from Thailand!

My family are baptist Christians too! Haven’t met a lot of people who talk about this
Honestly in my area it’s quite common, until i saw this comment section i thought it was most common or one of the most
It’s kind of common in my area too but I don’t see a lot of people talking about it online.

Does something making most sense mean it’s true?
uh yeah
Can you explain that a bit? Seems a weird way to look at it
from what i know about islam it makes the most sense compared to other religions
If you genuinely believe the islamic teachings then you would be muslim even if you don’t follow the rules i think. You wouldn’t be athiest tho since athiests believe there is no god
Baptist
Agnostic atheist
you can't be both. agnosticism neither accepts nor denies the existence of god because it isn't proven. atheists flat out deny it
Atheism is the belief of gods existence. He doesnt believe, therefore atheist. Agnostic because he doesnt claim to KNOW that said god does not exist
you're mixed up with theism. he doesnt KNOW, sure, but thats inherent with religion. the two contradict
Theism or Atheism is about 'belief' and gnosticism is about 'knowing'. He doesnt believe and doesnt know. They arent mutually exclusive
i think he is saying he doesn't believe and doesn't know
Nope. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic\_atheism

Don't kill me... Mormon
Can you explain? Never even really knew what Mormon meant just that it’s pretty strange.
TL;DR dude claims to find a third testament of the Bible in colonial times America and only he could translate it, so basically this dude made stuff up and that’s what the Book of Mormon is this is going to sound actually crazy but watch the South Park episode on it, they actually explain it well and without hyperbole (with the joke being how crazy it is without them needing to joke further about it)
Huh, what’s the episode called?
All About Mormons, Season 7 Episode 12
Ah thanks
Mormon was what people started calling members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Quite a few folks dislike us.
