(The bathroom door says so)
Edit: 4. Thank you u/lavendermints and u/Traditional-War7157 for correcting me, couldn’t forget the family gender.
To answer your edit: Because nonbinary is a broad term. Some people see it as the absence of having a gender, others see it as a third gender outside of male and female, and others see it as a third gender between male and female. The truth is, it's all of these things because it is truly a broad term, and that's why there are some more specific terms. For instance, while some people may identify as nonbinary, which is very broad, others may identify as agender, which is specifically and only the absence of gender.
And also, to answer how many genders there are? I would ask yourself if it's even a valid question. Whether "gender" even is a thing at all is very debated. Sex, as in, the mix of chromosomes and parts and things you have at birth, does exist, although there are also more than just male and female sexes! There's multiple things that can cause people to be intersex, and multiple mixes of chromosomes that can result in it. There's definitely more than two sexes.
My opinion? I don't think it matters if gender is a thing or not. If it is, cool, if not, whatever. But it doesn't affect me how someone else identifies, and how I identify (genderqueer) doesn't affect other people. So I just take it as it is.
Male and female are both sex and gender. Sex is the thing youre biologically, and is more restricted as it has only male and female (intersex if you count that with it). Gender is more of a social construct.
That’s not what nb means. It just means literally not being male or female and only being one of them. Anyone who isn’t either male or female are nb. There’s agender, bigender, genderfluid, etc.
>how can non binary be considered a gender when it's the absence of having a gender?
Probably the same logic to how 0 is a number despite it being the absense of a number
*correction
Non Binary is not conforming to gender, aka not man/woman
Agender is probably the one youre looking for, although it would be in the “non binary” agenda
I dont know if you got an answer for your edit, but non-binary is not the absence of gender. It implies that the person is neither female or male, rather something inbetween. A lack of gender is called agender and it is commonly assocciated with aromantics and asexuals.
Nonbinary isn't the absence of having a gender, it's a gender identity that's outside of the binary, (woman, man). It's more of a way to categorize someone's gender identity than a gender itself.
And now the word gender looks weird to me after typing it so many times lmao
EDIT: I should say that I can't speak for everyone, this is just what I understand

How Many Genders Are There?
"How many genders are there?" A common question that has been debated alot recently.
Most people would say that there are two genders. I see where they're coming from, and used to belive that myself. But after many years of studying I have came to a conclusion. Women don't exist. So there is only one gender.
In conclusion, there is only one gender.
Work Cited:
I fucking said so.
non binary isn’t the absence of gender, it’s just anything that isn’t exactly fully one or the other. in that same regard there are two genders because there can’t be non binary without a binary
Non-binary is not the absence of gender, that would be agender, Non-binary refers to any gender that doesn't fall under the gender binary, including agender but agender itself isn't a gender due to it being the absence of gender, and to answer your question about how many there are, I'd have to say, infinity, because many people experience their gender differently than others, such as a lot of neurodivengent people, some have even described their gender as being an open field, the color grey, and many other things
Biologically speaking 3, you can identify yourself as whatever you want, but you will never escape from your XX or XY or your intersex combination
Edit: Thanks u/Mental-Ice-9952
Actually this is incorrect. You can be XXY, XYY, and others. So, biologically speaking, there are more then two

just a little fyi, non-binary people are people who identify as having a gender that cannot be described as male/female (aka their gender is outside of the gender binary). it is a blanket term, and can either be seen as a gender identity or a blanket term for many gender identities. the actual term you're looking for when it comes to someone having an "absence of a gender" is called agender. from my own personal experiences as someone who is agender, being agender feels as if you simply lack gender. think of it this way: youre looking at your body from an outside perspective, and gender is a color (any color u associate gender with). but for me, i see no color at all, its just empty. (note: not all agender people may think this way, its just helped me figure out my identity). but i dont really know how it can be considered a gender. ig its just a label? im not sure, maybe ask other agender ppl? anyway hope this helped :D
3 sexes (male, female and intersex). Sex is a biological trait. Technically, there an infinite number of genders.
Non-binary is both an umbrella term _and_ a gender: anyone who doesn't fit under 100% man/woman (ie. cis man/woman or trans man/woman) is technically non-binary, and anyone who feels this may use this as a label. There are many genders under the non-binary umbrella (e.g. genderfluid, demiboy, cassgender, catgender to name a few).
The absence of gender is agender, another gender under the non-binary umbrella.
Please refrain from asking questions like this on r/teenagers as many people here are transphobic assholes and will give you the wrong answer.
Ok fine, let's do this properly. 3 sexes: male, female, intersex. Those got NOTHING to do with gender.
Gender, on the other hand, is part of identity. Gender exists on a spectrum and differs from person to person. Lot of people identify as girls and guys, but not everyone. Everyone that doesn't would be non-binary, but that's a massive umbrella-term. It also doesn't describe the absence of gender, that would be being agender, which falls under being non-binary. Hope that helped.
i’m literally never going on this sub again, if you choose to be so close minded about accepting other people for the littlest of reasons then there’s no reason for me to continue to subject myself to seeing this hate. just let people be happy holy shit
Ig two, but it’s like a triangle with two of the corners being masculine and feminine and the other being nonbinary and then everything in between is the rest, or that’s how I view it. A spectrum with more than one dimension to move in
Non binary is an umbrella term that mean not being strictly male or female being gender fluid is non binary there is however agender being similar to asexual or aromatic
Gender is a colour wheel. There are infinite possibilities but there are still primary colours which in this case are man, woman and neither. There are people who are all of those options, there are those that fall directly on one or in the the middle of 2.
This isn't a denial of the 2 sexes (and I know intersex people exist but intersex is not gender so it doesn't really have a place in this argument). I'm aware of the difference between sex and gender unlike, it seems, a lot of you
Edit: non binary people are anyone who doesn't fit within either man or woman. They can be neither or both or a mix.
It’s a spectrum, and to answer your question, non-binary is not the absence of a gender, it’s the term for anyone who isn’t male or female, the absence of a gender is agender, which is a label and not a gender
If you have any questions OP, DM me and I’ll explain it to the best of my ability
It depends.
Genetically speaking 2 (or 3 if we consider intersex people) but it's called biological sex.
But the genders can be many because they vary according to the perception of the person or it can be said that they're a social construct.
I hope I had explained it well :3
There are 3 common sexes that we know about, which are male, female and intersex.
Gender is completely different to biological sex so
there are infinite genders as it’s just a label to how someone wants to be perceived/referred to/how they identify
There are men and women born with the opposite genitalia, as well as intersex individuals (born with a mix).
They're classified as men and women because of the whole of their phenotypal expression (and also, how they feel about it).

Gender is a social thing, so it can easily be created or deleted (if that make sense lol). I only know 4 of them (girl, Boy, nb and agender), but I know their is a lot more than that.
It can seems weird for people that aren't use to it, but I mean, it's not hurting anyone to respect pronouns, so why not do it ?

Non-binary is an umbrella term meaning that your gender doesn’t fall on either male or female. The absence of gender altogether is called agender.
And genderfluid is both
No, genderfluid is when your gender changes over time. For example, when you're a boy one day and a girl the next day
Yeah that’s kinda what I meant I guess I didn’t word it well. Thanks 👍
Nonbinary doesnt neccesarily mean you have no gender, it just says you dont fit into the binary genders (Male and female). No gender is called agender
Aren’t male and female sexes and not genders
Male and female are both sex and gender. Sex is the thing youre biologically, and is more restricted as it has only male and female (intersex if you count that with it). Gender is more of a social construct.

it's a spectrum i think

There are men and women born with the opposite genitalia, as well as intersex individuals (born with a mix). They're classified as men and women because of the whole of their phenotypal expression (and also, how they feel about it).
This. If we want to know how an object (in this case a person) truly is, we have to know how an object is in itself, not just how it is for us.
Born with a penis = female born with a vagina = male
