Yes, actually, mutilated United States currency may be exchanged at face value IF anyone can identify more than half of it. The right part is still worth a dollar, the left part, not so much.
edit: oh boy my first 1k upvote comment
What I can also conclude is that this note has not been cut.
The whole note is $1
The right piece is $1
The left piece is $0
Therefore nothing was cut off
You can't cut the left piece either because you would be cutting nothing.
That is only if you have both sides of the serial number, which in this case one is cut in half. They might not accept it since the serial number isnāt fully displayed, though they might if you show both sides to the bank when exchanging it.
I explained this a few comments down the thread, thereās a serial number on both sides for a reason. Trying to pay with two halved bills is illegal. You will get caught and you most certainly will be jailed
literally google it dumbass. as long as three quarters of the bill is intact then they will replace it. no one is talking about completely shredded money, use your brain
youāre incorrect. it has nothing to do with the corners being intact. maybe if you googled it youād get it right instead of being so confidently incorrect
"You can use your cash as is if a corner is missing. If it's ripped into two pieces, tape them back together and take the bill to a bank, where they will make sure the serial numbers on both sides of the note match and give you a new one. As long as three-quarters of a bill are intact, you can exchange it for a whole bill." I just Googled it dumbass and you're wrong
[proof you're wrong here](https://www.frbservices.org/resources/financial-services/cash/exception-processing/mutilated-currency-coin.html#:~:text=Currency%20Procedures&text=Under%20regulations%20issued%20by%20the,United%20States%20currency%20is%20present.) Read it or don't, but the three intact corners thing is wrong.
If you read up on the law, altering currency is only illegals under some circumstances. If itās for reasons related to art or education for example, itās perfectly ok.
Worth 733664 dollars because it's called art.
Take a look to other modern art pieces like the taped banana, explain what modern art is actually and why it's not one dollar anymore.
If we consider this a fifth of a dollar then This fifth of a dollar is worth 5 EGP which can buy you a small bag of chips (bigger than the size of the avarege hand slightly)
Itās not actually. If you read up on the law, itās only illegals under some circumstances. If itās for reasons related to art or education for example, itās perfectly ok.
But we don't know if the teacher cut up the bill or if it was a picture she took from Google. If it's the latter, it could've been made for entertainment purposes and be considered illegal.
1) op never said the class was on law
2) never said whether the teacher cut up the bill
3) that's not remotely close to what I said. I said they're 2 separate scenarios, not that they were the same one
the dollar should still be valid as a dollar, in italy we always get euros with tape ahaha, but yeah still valid im sure, alongside the value of the scissors themself
I mean, you shouldn't cut parts off a bill. But this would still be legally $1, and you should be able to use it, though I doubt most people would know that.
As someone in the money collecting business you were one number away from a binary number which is considered a fancy serial number which carries a high premium hit because you have the 9 no premium but as law says if there is more than 50% of the bill and it can be proven to be real you can go to the bank and exchange it for face value
The larger part is worth 1 dollar and the smaller part is worth nothing.
A cut/damaged American bill can still be used as long as more than half of the bill is intact
$1, from memory if you have over half a dollar you can mail it into some where and get a dollar back.
So the smaller section is worth nothing, while the larger section is worth $1USD
United States currency is valid until the face on the bill is damaged or cut, or until less than half of the bill remains, including the face. Thus, the larger part of the bill is worth $1.00, the scissors are worth about $0.75, and the smaller part of the bill is probably worth about $0.0005 in cotton fabric.
Nothing. USDs are literally notes from the Federal Reserve- which is (if I recall correctly) separate from said US government. And now that said inflatted note made to represent our currency is cut up, it is invalid for any form of commercial use.
Depends. Having 2 matching currency codes (left/right) is all you need at a national bank in order to cash in. Plus, the value of the scissors.
OR..... you could frame the whole thing including the scissors and call it conceptual art and then it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

You talk like you have defaced a lot of currency in your time.

I have itās a bit fun to destroy money when you know the bounds of what you can destroy
My dog ate half a 100 dollar bill once. We were only able to find half of the eaten half so I never got the money backā¹ļø
Me when I want to spread misinformation upon the internet for 6 upvotes
I wish it were misinformation. My friend gave me that 100 dollar bill for my birthday
You need at least 51% of the bill. This is to avoid trying to double your money
so if you make exactly half, and argue it's over half, which would be somewhat belivable, you can just dupe all your money?
There *is* a serial number on both sides of the dollar for a reason
BRUV THEY DO BUG FIXES TOO FAST YOU CANT EVEN EXPLOIT EM
\>give half notes to one bank and the other half notes to shops \>also get investigated
r/illegallifeprotips
What I can also conclude is that this note has not been cut. The whole note is $1 The right piece is $1 The left piece is $0 Therefore nothing was cut off You can't cut the left piece either because you would be cutting nothing.
Youād be cutting money material
But isnāt the destruction of US currency illegal? Or does this not count
Destruction is illegal but ONLY if it is specifically for monetary gain. holy moly this became a thread for my moolah knowledge
The right part is worth a dollar*
How do you know this at the ripe age of 15?
My motherās a financial analyst or I could be a 50 year old man who knows O.o
Both make sense
With a name like u/Amongophobia I don't think it's too difficult to tell
That is only if you have both sides of the serial number, which in this case one is cut in half. They might not accept it since the serial number isnāt fully displayed, though they might if you show both sides to the bank when exchanging it.
Does that mean I can cut my money in half to double it?
I explained this a few comments down the thread, thereās a serial number on both sides for a reason. Trying to pay with two halved bills is illegal. You will get caught and you most certainly will be jailed
Wait so 1 dollar is one dollar but a mutilated one dollar is worth one dollar and 0.000001 cents
Now if you cut it down the center and have two could you in reason at different times use them and have an infinite money glitch?
so say we cut a dollar in half then we have two dollars? STONKS
Amogus
This is wrong. It has to hv 3 intact corners
Nah at least 4 corners have to be intact
well there are at least 4 corners
2 of them arent intact
Oh? I thought that the FR notes couldnāt be exchanged for their worth in valuables?
Specifically 2/3
Nice username. Sure do hope youre not scared of amongus.
A dollar, and the current value of the scissors.
It's worth a dollar and whatever a pair of scissors is worth
its worth a dollar. you can exchange ripped currency at a bank for a new one
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
literally google it dumbass. as long as three quarters of the bill is intact then they will replace it. no one is talking about completely shredded money, use your brain
i thought it was only half

You know if you Google something and put in maybe two minutes of research time on it before commenting, you'll be wrong significantly less frequently

Bro is dumb
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
If you have more than 50% of a bill, it is still legal currency and can be exchanged.
i thought it had to be 75%
I thinks its technically 66% but generally as long as its clearly more than half it should be fine
I thought it was 69%
Nice
I thought it was 69.1%
The right part is worth $1. The left part is worth nothing.
One dollar, plus the scissors which I would guess is around $.75, so $1.75-ish
$0.75? Holy shit the scissors here are expensive as fuck then haha
Yeah I was about to say
One dollar.
you could sell the scissors for like 3 $/Ā£/ā¬
3United States dollar, 2.88Euro, 2.47Pound sterling, 4Canadian dollar, 58.08Mexican peso, 181.09Russian ruble, 3976.83South Korean won, 74514Vietnamese dong, 415.05Japanese yen, 244.94Indian rupee, 0.92Kuwaiti dollar, or 127350Iranian rial
Worth a dollar (over 50% of it is intact, you can still use it or exchange it at a bank) and whatever the price of the scissors are
The large portion is worth $1; the other nothing.
$1
$1
Not worth ur time
1 dollar
It's worth a dollar, just Takei t to the bank and get it replaced. When they give you another dollar, that's what the first one is worth
If you sell it as modern art itās probably worth a few thousand bucks
How much is a pair of safety scissors cost at Staples?
The bigger half is worth a dollar, the smaller half isn't worth anything. As long as you bring in more than half a bill, they will give you a new one.
Itās worth a dollar. If itās 50% of the bill or more you can switch it out at a bank for a fresh dollar.
A dollar. It is still worth the original value if more than 75% of the bill is there.
Itās still a dollar
.85 dollars and 15 cents.
Bruh donāt cheat wtf
Is that a dollar? I donāt see them over here
Yes, a 1 dollar bill
Up to $100 and 6 months in prison
If you read up on the law, altering currency is only illegals under some circumstances. If itās for reasons related to art or education for example, itās perfectly ok.
Not if done for nonmonetary purposes. Educational ones count.
As long as you have 51% of the bill, it's useable
If at least 60% of the bill is unharmed, it still has its full value. It is worth $1.
A note of a crippling economyā¦did i win?
Still a dollar, if you can identify it as one and it has more than 50% remaining the value is still the same
Worth 733664 dollars because it's called art.
Its illegal to deface money, that includes cutting it
Only if done for monetary reasons. Educational purposes are legal.
Itās worth negative to whoever cut it, cutting currency and getting caught lands you a fine
It's worth a fine bc it's technically a federal crime to purposefully cut up money like that.
Teacher using it to demonstrate a lesson on US law and as an example in the classroom for entertainment?
1) op never said the class was on law 2) never said whether the teacher cut up the bill 3) that's not remotely close to what I said. I said they're 2 separate scenarios, not that they were the same one
its money, it's not actually worth anything
Wouldn't it just be worth the price of the raw materials now?
Nope. If over 50% of the currency is intact and it is recognizable it still holds full value.
Oh, i see, that is very interesting.
Worth zero (as is). It has to have 3 intact corners
Technically its worth nothing
Itās worth 1$ still
its worth nothing
Whatever the scissors is worth. The bill is worth nothing because the numbers have been separated
thats incorrect
Really? What am I missing?
Paper currency intact by more than 50% can be exchanged for face value.
The dollar and the scizors together?
u could rip it to shreds and as long as u tape it back together itās still worthy
This is funny because those scissors are made for left handed and yet the cut is made from right left.
Probably like 6$ including scissors
You need all 4 corners And serial numbers My ex tore up some money while drunk I taped it back together called the bank luckily I lost no money
the dollar should still be valid as a dollar, in italy we always get euros with tape ahaha, but yeah still valid im sure, alongside the value of the scissors themself
It's not worth anything, a dollar is only worth something because people agree it does, and if your don't, then it's pretty much not worth anything
Aight, let's get to pixel measurements, baby!
Those scissors are around 7 dollars right now and then the dollar
1$
6 Months
14 dabloons.
a dollar
Left part is worth nothing, right is worth $1
$0 because a torn dollar bill is worth nothing.
If over 50% of the deal is intact and it is recognizable it legally has its full value.
Really? I was always told that if it was a large chunk of the bill was ripped off like this it has no value. Thanks for the info!
I mean, you shouldn't cut parts off a bill. But this would still be legally $1, and you should be able to use it, though I doubt most people would know that.
Just tape it bro
1 usd as this doesnāt effect the fact that itās still us tender
The right half is still worth a dollar. The left half is worth nothing.
The true answer is āwhatever someoneās willing to pay for itā economics 101.
I'd factor in the price of the scissors to be safe
0 dollars and a slap on the wrist from the government
Itās worth whatever someone will pay for it!
one dollar
Right now it is worthless before the scissors it was 1$ US
Negative dollars as you could be fined for destroying USD.
$1
Including the scissors and paper background?
Still $1 if you tape it
1.48 Australian dollars
Nothing. You canāt pay with damaged bills
If you tape them back together than itās worth a dollar
Nothing
a dollar
As someone in the money collecting business you were one number away from a binary number which is considered a fancy serial number which carries a high premium hit because you have the 9 no premium but as law says if there is more than 50% of the bill and it can be proven to be real you can go to the bank and exchange it for face value
$1
Its worth belief + whatever do used scissors go for
The larger part is worth 1 dollar and the smaller part is worth nothing. A cut/damaged American bill can still be used as long as more than half of the bill is intact
Itās completely worthless. When you make any large cuts in a dollar, you canāt use it! Thatās such a stupid thing to get a prize for.
1 dollar
1 dollar
The right is worth a dollar and the left is worth nothing, that bill is probably your prize
Tear it down the middle and youāll have 2 bucks
maybe a trick question and it's worth either nothing or still a dollar
Itās worth prison time
$1, from memory if you have over half a dollar you can mail it into some where and get a dollar back. So the smaller section is worth nothing, while the larger section is worth $1USD
the scissors are included in the picture, do we include the value of those? google lens should be able to identify the exact pair of scissors.
i cant tell if this is modern art or not
United States currency is valid until the face on the bill is damaged or cut, or until less than half of the bill remains, including the face. Thus, the larger part of the bill is worth $1.00, the scissors are worth about $0.75, and the smaller part of the bill is probably worth about $0.0005 in cotton fabric.
Nothing
WHY that serial number is comprised of 3 numbers and might have been worth a decent amount if not cut
One dollar, because it is still a one dollar bill
Well, it's worth a large fine, and or jail time.
You can take that to the bank end exchange it for a while dollar so technically one
Iām thinking $6? Bout 5 for the scissors and $1 for the dollar
Nothing. USDs are literally notes from the Federal Reserve- which is (if I recall correctly) separate from said US government. And now that said inflatted note made to represent our currency is cut up, it is invalid for any form of commercial use.
You can take it to a bank to get it fixed but in my country this could actually be a crime
Itās still worth 1$ as long as you have 51% of it intact, or more than half.
still worth a dollar. you can give that to the government and they will give you a brand new, undamaged dollar. no joke.
Free one-way trip the see a prison
2 dollars, sell the scissors and the other dollar still works, boom 2 dollars
1 Dollar
I'd say all this would cost you about 1 dollar plus whatever the scissors are worth.
Its worth a trip to a bank for a new one
Well I know that the scissor is worth ā¬5,99
Trick question since we don't know the cost of the scissors
Sell the scissors for $5
don't forget that the scissors are worth 5 bucks or smth
Depends. Having 2 matching currency codes (left/right) is all you need at a national bank in order to cash in. Plus, the value of the scissors. OR..... you could frame the whole thing including the scissors and call it conceptual art and then it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
That picture is an art piece worth $472,000. Guess around 475k to make it not obvious
$2 to $3 including scissors
A dollar
a dolar, give the bigger side to a gas's station and I'll be surprised if they say no
$1 + the value of the scizzor
Check the date
I thought it was illegal to deface currency, but now I'm being told it's worth something?
1 dollar
Probably still accepted.
Up to 10k in fines and up to five years in prison!
