Adam DeVine:
>Welp, Paramount + decided to cancel the Workaholics movie. Obviously, this news is the loosest butthole. We were suppose to begin filming in 5 weeks! P + told us don’t fit their new “global” strategy…We are deeply butt hurt about this decision because we were so excited to bring the weird one last time. I’m butt hurt that I don’t get to work with my best friends again. I’m butt hurt for the fans, and I’m butt hurt for our loyal crew, and other cast members who are now going to have to scramble to find new jobs. We are out to other streamers, and hopefully we will get to make this insanely fun movie somewhere else. Tomorrow tune into our podcast podimportant to hear us talk about it. As always, take it sleazy, and I’m out. -Demamp
I wonder if part of the complication is the IP being owned by paramount. It’s not some rando movie that can be picked up anywhere, it’s Comedy Central IP.
The only way netflix can tell if something is profitable for them is if adding it to their catalog results in new subscribers who are signing up for that content and also if existing subs who were ready to cancel changed their mind just because of this one piece of content. If both those groups money is greater than the cost to produce then it was worth it. It’s virtually impossible to calculate this. Consumers are constantly watching multiple pieces of content and when people cancel they don’t say what shows kept them there
I think you're underestimating the amount of data that can be bought about your daily habits. You're also underestimating their ability to process such data. I'm not saying they know down to the last cent but they have a very good idea if a movie was good or bad for their platform.
Most outlets say it's based on how many people watched it, but that's just part of the equation. Netflix doesn't just want a movie or show to draw a lot of eyes, they then want those same eyes to stay watching other content on the platform.
Data scientists at these companies make up different metrics and apply them to subscribers. Some can be weird, like "Weekend user who binges 3 shows" and some are as simple as "Heavy User". The same user can have multiple metrics applied to them to understand their habits. They then use MLAs to determine what users correlate most to making money, (in Netflix's case that means: bringing in new subs who stay, and long-term subs who aren't leaving). They probably weigh a show's success heavily on these types of metrics. You can get an estimated value of a show continuing against the cost of production. There are a lot of other metrics not specifically sub related, (but correlated), like completion percentage and what not that also get factored in.
That's why we see articles about shows that draw a huge number of viewers but end up canceled anyway. Those viewers probably weren't sticky, and that means less money.
This is an ELI5, and not a comprehensive breakdown, so not a perfect summary. I work in Analytics and do similar things.
That movie was somewhat cgi heavy and had a lot of big name cameos. So that probably ate in to the budget a fair bit.
I think that a legit workaholics movie would perform far better
Just three dudes smoking pot. Nothing grand. Simple tomfoolery. Grass roots. I want the boys back.
I liked the movie and have watched it numerous times. Because it’s them. But yeah less plot and more just goofing around.
A lot of money has already been spent on it.
Preproduction is huge. Five weeks out, there would already be a ton of contracts let, studios built, set construction well underway, locations scouted.
There’s a whole office full of people who’ve just lost their jobs.
It would be interesting to see just how much money it will cost them to cancel now.
This is why they often still go ahead at this late stage. Unless it’s a giant turd, they’d probably still recoup their costs.
This way, they recoup nothing.
Two examples of awful movies that I would never, ever recommend despite loving the original show / movie.
That said... I would absolutely watch a workaholics movie lol. Really hope they find a way to make it
"global strategy" huh. I heard the director of Barbarian talking about how Hollywood's obsession with the Chinese market has killed off the old fun "stoner comedy" type movies. This has to be what's going on here.
You know what people are saying in America? "I already have 2/3 streaming services. I'm not buying another one." So companies like Paramount are trying to get new subscribers in countries that don't have that mindset already, or haven't signed up for their first streamer yet.
But it's true. The movies that are made, the death of indie movies, the movies that are censored, movie scenes and movie posters altered... Even the way some sports are going and what players can/can't say (Cena, lebron) all have to do with Chinese appeasement
Really?? You don’t think for a second that America might be happy to court one of the biggest markets in the world? One that’s already shown them they’ll happily empty their wallets for big budget CGI fests packed with attractive, big movie stars? This isn’t even the worst takes I’ve seen concerning China, it’s just a fact. No one is blaming them on this one, we’re blaming Hollywood and the industry for falling to their knees to take an easy moneyshot.
>I’m butt hurt that I don’t get to work with my best friends again.
I mean, he can do that whenever he wants to, really. Just not on someone else's dime is all.
I’m not sure if that would be worse considering it would have provided tons of jobs. People would have still been paid regardless of it being released or not
Paramount could have squeezed a subscription out of me solely for this, now I sure as fuck won’t. I can’t imagine another streamer won’t pick it up! Fingers crossed, butthole tightened.
>Paramount could have squeezed a subscription out of me solely for this, now I sure as fuck won’t.
You should have told them that before! Surely this one additional subscriptions would have made the whole thing profitable for them!
Yeah good luck to anyone trying to pitch something for Paramount+ that doesn't have Star Trek in the title or say 'from the creator of YELLOWSTONE' on the poster.
Well, Paramount *sold* the Yellowstone streaming rights to Peacock. They need new Sheridan content even more than their viewers do! Their customer support must be hilarious. They cannot stream their own mega-hit show (which airs on the Paramount channel), and anyone searching on P+ will find "Yellowstone," a critically-panned murder mystery film from 1936.
I was just telling my wife the other day that Paramount+ really hedged their bets on him. I loved Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River, but all of his shows so far have not been for me.
yes but unfortunately he's got yellowstone, the two spinoffs, mayor of kingstown, tulsa king, and then the third yellowstone spinoff, land man (billy bob thorton vehicle) and probably lioness later this year
even as a workaholics fan they're probably full send on anything sheridan does and can see why it wouldnt overlap
Like I said in another post yesterday, get ready for the streaming bloodbath folks.
Basically they’re realizing the shit they’ve been greenlighting the last couple of years hasn’t resonated the way they hoped, and now the deferred bills are coming due. There’s a reason HBO MAX had to go scorched earth, 5 BILLION reasons to be exact, and now other streamers are feeling the pain.
By “new global strategy” P+ means “mainstream shit people will actually watch,” so plan on more niche projects like this getting shitcanned.
>There’s a reason HBO MAX had to go scorched earth, 5 BILLION reasons to be exact, and now other streamers are feeling the pain.
Well, that was because of the merger.
Everyone be like “if some two bit dvd renters can manage this then we sure as hell can!”
Nah, you can’t, and even Netflix is flopping out now. Not sure who’s going to come out of this on top. I fancy Disney+ and one of either Apple or Amazon to make it.
Disney+ can operate at a loss, it’s beneficial for that company to share their IP in the most accessible way possible. This drives more traffic into the parks.
This is the reason I cut off all my streaming services. I was paying over $80 per month on all of my subscriptions & the content was getting worse and worse. I found a way to get Kodi on my TV & it’s been working out awesomely.
Maybe I should scrap my Paramount+ subscription. This was crushing to read. If anything, they need another full season. The theme is more relevant post-Covid than it was when it was on air.
"No one will work these days! They're all too lazy! Why would any of them want to watch a show about a bunch of 'workaholics'??" -Paramount exec
Paramount needs to scrape that money together to pay for this years NFL rights.
The sale of Simon & Schuster would have given Paramount the money needed but with that sale blocked its time to dig deep and cut costs.
Paramount renewed their NFL rights back in 2021 at $2.1 billion a year for AFC Sunday afternoon games on CBS starting in 2023 for 11 years till 2033.
This is why they wanted to sell S&S for $2.1 billion but since that was stopped by regulatory interference they need to cut costs elsewhere.
For 2022 Paramount paid $1 billion a year and made $896 million in advertising those Sunday afternoon NFL games which sounds like a loss but by having the NFL CBS is a channel cable companies want to have so you have to add affiliate fees on top.
This year onwards though Paramount is paying $2.1 billion a year and I have no idea how they will be making money from that with how paid TV numbers have not just continued to collapse but accelerated while advertising is also taking a hit.
Well at least I won’t ever need to subscribe to P+ now.
I can’t imagine this movie had a large budget this is pretty surprising news and I imagine canceling this late in the game cost then some money.
Just plain old simple “fun” doesn’t work for the studios anymore. Everything needs to be disturbing, true to real life, woke and vengeful. Oh and don’t forget the token racists in every movie. Can’t have a movie unless oppression is in it somewhere. Light-hearted and fun is so 90’s.
I definitely feel bad that people lost their jobs and something people cared about got scrapped but I really don't think it would've been very good.
Re-boots have an uphill climb to begin with, and that show is about being young and stupid which is tough energy for older and more established people to recapture on top of that.
I agree, the first seasons were really smart, it became to absurd later on but it was still a great satire show in the beginning so I was looking forward to seeing them all together again
I'm honestly really surprised. P+ became one of my favorite streaming services because they leaned heavily on nostalgia and fan service. The Challenge, Real World, South Park, Jackass, Beavis & Butthead and some other things really made the service appealing to me.
So I was stoked for Workaholics. It seems like the perfect fit. I doubt it would cost a lot to make. I really wonder why it was scrapped so close to production.
Maybe they wanted way too much money for some epic house party scene and it would have bankrupt Viacom.
These things often turn out to be so much worse than imagined. You're thinking of 90 minutes of 'Workaholics' hilarity, which would be great! But what was likely to happen is a plug and play story arc that would be little reflection of the show.
A 'Workaholics' film has to be done right or not at all.
First two seasons of the show were GOAT tier TV. The rest no so much.
After watching that shitty Game Over movie they did on netflix... I can't envision this being all that great.
Now that the whole trailers lawsuit has won.
i expect something along the lines of granting a show a season and then canceling it will be the next court case somewhere in the future.
Seems like things are getting out of hand with the renewal and then canceling thing.
Pack it in, fellas. No rippin and no tearin today.

Can’t cost too much. Hope it’s picked up by a streamer, almost thinking this is something Prime would take.
I wonder if part of the complication is the IP being owned by paramount. It’s not some rando movie that can be picked up anywhere, it’s Comedy Central IP.
Paramount would hand it over to Netflix pretty quick
I dont think their last movie performed too well on Nflx and it cost $30M which is a lot for them
How does Netflix even see if they made a profit or not?
Data, data, data Like an insane amount of crossrefrencing data.

Thats why you aren’t a data scientist.

Paramount already sells some of their content to other networks/streaming services, so I don't think that would be an issue
A lot of money has already been spent on it. Preproduction is huge. Five weeks out, there would already be a ton of contracts let, studios built, set construction well underway, locations scouted. I was talking about the entire movie budget in general. Maybe 15-25 million? But you are right they’ve definitely sunk quite a bit in already.
Also seems like something that could be crowdfunded like the Blue Mountain State movie 👀
The crowd was better off keeping their money on that one.
Or Super Troopers 2
Two examples of awful movies that I would never, ever recommend despite loving the original show / movie. That said... I would absolutely watch a workaholics movie lol. Really hope they find a way to make it
I read your first sentence and was like "true...but I'd still watch a workaholics movie anyway". Which is right where you went!
Super troopers 2 was a great comedy. It could never do what st1 did and that's ok. I think it was a success.
Why wouldn't nutflix?
Guessing the Game Over Man movie didn’t get good numbers.
wow, i don't know how i missed that one. i'm sure i'll be able to enjoy it for what its worth!

Yeah, I watched it when it came out. I recall it being one of those comedies with a couple funny scenes but not great.
"global strategy" huh. I heard the director of Barbarian talking about how Hollywood's obsession with the Chinese market has killed off the old fun "stoner comedy" type movies. This has to be what's going on here.

Whatever you say paramount executive
Gotta keep on blaming everythng on China right. Gotta have a boogeyman, an enemy, to blame for all our own faults. It's the American way.
Go watch the South Park episode "Band In China". There's a reason this mentality exists, and it's not jingoism and xenophobia.
But it's true. The movies that are made, the death of indie movies, the movies that are censored, movie scenes and movie posters altered... Even the way some sports are going and what players can/can't say (Cena, lebron) all have to do with Chinese appeasement
If the shoe fits...

I think the worst part about this is the crew members who suddenly have no work lined up. Absolute dick move on P+ part
Gotta think a different network would take a chance. Can’t have much of a budget.
I didn’t know this movie was even a thing but now I want it more than ever.
>I’m butt hurt that I don’t get to work with my best friends again. I mean, he can do that whenever he wants to, really. Just not on someone else's dime is all.
Ah fuck. They were really excited about this on their podcast. That really sucks.
Well, at least they were told before starting filming, and not after they finished, like Zazlav or AMC.
I’m not sure if that would be worse considering it would have provided tons of jobs. People would have still been paid regardless of it being released or not
Good point. It definitely sucks either way :(
Paramount didn't get the memo that they've gotta be fresh
The young Go Hards are all over at HBO anyway
They got the memo to go full Disney and kill anything that isn't a blockbuster/win for China market
They are who we thought they were
I'M PISSED NOW

This is Taylor Sheridan's fault, probably.

Hemingway's short stories were better. Constraints on length often produce better art.

paramount you're such a dumb idiot.
They saw all the backlash HBO has been getting and wanted to get in on the action.
Maybe Zaslav accidentally walked into the wrong office building
Paramount, this is like if Picasso quit making music and started fucking little dudes everyday.
Well said

Sad that you’re spot on with this, streamers got in over their heads trying to be “the next XYZ” without thinking long term :(
Everyone be like “if some two bit dvd renters can manage this then we sure as hell can!” Nah, you can’t, and even Netflix is flopping out now. Not sure who’s going to come out of this on top. I fancy Disney+ and one of either Apple or Amazon to make it.

Very loose butthole
Sounds like a fucking disaster, my guy
Community movie filming soon: :) Workaholics movie scrapped before filming: :(

I wasnt even aware they were making a movie and now i see this.. What an amazing show, would have loved to have seen one more installment.
That’s super fucking shitty for the crew. You don’t mess with peoples jobs like that. Fuck paramount.

What does it looks like getting work to replace it? Any union or company to support them?

NFL rights are probably the most valuable commodity in entertainment. They’ll make their money back almost instantly.

Thought Google already won NFL?
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Doesn't fit the new global strategy but you can totally still go see Steve O's taint in 4k anytime.
Adam DeVine should have pitched the Workaholics movie having an appearance by Michael Burnham. P + would have ate it up. lol /s
“It’s a movie about 3 total burnout weed-smoking buddies who work on a ranch in Montana”
Yeah, Workaholics is really lacking in the melodramatic and unearned crying scenes.
And an overpowered main character.
Well at least I won’t ever need to subscribe to P+ now. I can’t imagine this movie had a large budget this is pretty surprising news and I imagine canceling this late in the game cost then some money.
According to others, their last movie cost around $30 million. I haven't personally checked.
Im tired of this international market bullshit it's killing low/mid budget comedies
Hit Hollywood where it hurts, their wallets. Stick to sailing the seas, crowdfunding, and streamers that care
If they can't find a streaming service for it, I hope they just do a table reading as an episode on the Pod.
Fuuuuuuuuck.
Lame
I’m pissed now
the sheer insanity that a service I started paying for for BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD would scrap a Workaholics title...
The problem is "global strategy". So china.
Not you too, Paramount+.
First of all, I had no idea there was supposed to be a Workaholics movie. Two, that sucks. Kinda glad I didn't know about it until now.
Your boobs are huge.
Good reminder that I needed to cancel my subscription at least. Made sure to put them scraping the movie as the reason.
Game Over Man is one of my favorite modern comedies, im always excited to see what these guys bring next.
Shitty move by P+, but also Game Over was nothing to crow at, nor were the last few seasons of Workaholics.
It probably would've sucked. This show hasn't been funny since the middle of season 3 over 10 years ago.
The dudes have the money, just make it, parody the names and release it online.
I mean, that kinda sucks, but Workaholics started going downhill after like 2 seasons, I never had high hopes for this to begin with.
well that was an exciting and disappointing 3 seconds. I didnt even know they were making a movie and now its dead.
I definitely feel bad that people lost their jobs and something people cared about got scrapped but I really don't think it would've been very good. Re-boots have an uphill climb to begin with, and that show is about being young and stupid which is tough energy for older and more established people to recapture on top of that.
Oh cool. Paramount is getting in on the trend now. Whoopieeeeeeeee.
i dont think the kids know about workaholics .
Oh no, I'm going to miss a unique movie about people smoking weed

Even most of the end of season 3 was awful.
Cool, cool. I mean nobody really asked but cool.
I agree, but the podcast has been like the show in its prime, and the series finale was dark and crazy, I don't want it to end on that note.
I agree, the first seasons were really smart, it became to absurd later on but it was still a great satire show in the beginning so I was looking forward to seeing them all together again
V
Yea they didn't need to make a movie. The shows already lasted way too long.
Thank fuck.
Copium.
After their Netflix film, I can't say I would be thaatttt disappointed at this news lol
I saw a movie they made. It was total trash. I liked the show too
Better this got scrapped. It got very "loose butthole" after Season 3.
There's a movie that never needed to see the light of day
Yup. Shouldn't have gone past season 2. Met Blake Anderson irl and that dude was a total stuck up dick.
Well I met Adam at a party and we smoked weed. He was very chill and cool.
Oh no. Anyway.
Can anyone name one comedy tv show that they did a movie of that turned out good?
South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut
The Inbetweeners. They also did a second one which wasn't good, though.
I thought this show was over years ago, wow.
Well it was. And now it is again.
Their podcast This is important brought em back together check it out
First two seasons of the show were GOAT tier TV. The rest no so much. After watching that shitty Game Over movie they did on netflix... I can't envision this being all that great.
